This is the third in a fourpart series profiling programs at the Alcorn Career and Technology Center.

Preparing students for bright futures, the Alcorn County Career and Technical Center is constantly adding new programs and technologies.

This week’s highlighted programs are: Automotive Service Technology, Polymer Science, Health Sciences Core and Healthcare and Clinical Services.

Automotive Service Technology Added in 1972, the Automo-

tive Service Technology course is geared toward students who have a common knowledge of auto mechanics and have a desire to work in the automotive service field.

A two-year instructional program, students are prepared for entry-level positions in the automotive repair service area, or for entry into a secondary automotive technology program.

Areas of study include: Safety, Tools and Equipment Usage, Basic Measurements and Math, Basic Automotive Repairs, Brake Systems, Electrical Systems, Engine Performance and Steering and Suspension Systems.

Mississippi Silicon facility hiring process beginning

BURNSVILLE — The hiring process has began at Tishomingo County’s newest manufacturing facility.

Mississippi Silicon, LLC has partnered with the WIN Job Center to hire 200 employees by the end of 2015, according to Director of Human Resources Mark Ivey.

“We hope to assemble the right work force through the help of the WIN Job Center,”

said Ivey. “We’ll hire around 150 by mid summer and the remaining 50 will be hired before the end of this year.”

Ivey said construction on the facility located at the Northeast Mississippi Waterway Industrial Park just south of U.S. Highway 72 in Burnsville should wrap up in the next few months.

Mosley headlines black history month event

BOONEVILLE — Blues legend Sam Mosley was a hit at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

The Beaver Dam community native hit all the right notes whether behind the microphone or on the gridiron while in Booneville.

Mosley is set to return to NEMCC on Tuesday, Feb. 24 to headline the college’s annual Black History Program – “A Night of Music & Memories with Sam Mosley.”

“Sam has a long blues history,” said Michael H. Miller, co-chairman of the Cultural Arts Committee, who is sponsoring the event along with the Development Foundation.

Corinth is set to evaluate sanitation services as it requests proposals from contractors.

The city will also consider the purchase of new residential trash containers. The Board of Aldermen this week approved advertising a request for proposals for sanitation services and an invitation for bids for poly-carts.

“State law requires that periodically we request proposals for everything we do in solid waste,” Street Commissioner Philip Verdung explained to the Board of Aldermen this week. “It’s time to do that.”

Contractors may submit proposals for all sanitation

services currently provided by the city as well as proposals for any other services they may offer. This could include extras such as curbside recycling.

Upkeep of the aging fleet of poly-carts is a concern for the department. The model in use is no longer manufactured, and substantial time is spent on repairs.

Verdung is also interested in inventory management technology that would use radio-frequency identification chips.

“There are so many good career opportunities available in the automotive field, with good paying jobs,” he said. “I encourage any student who has an interest in automotive work to check out the career opportunities.”

Polymer Science Added in the 2005– 2006 school year, Polymer Science is a versatile course which teaches students hands-on, career and college-oriented skills.

“We make and manipulate many synthetic polymer materials. Students take them home to show family, friends and other classmates what they have made. Created items include: latex rubber balls, oobleck, slime, vacuum form molds, crystals, shrink plastics, cast polymer items, coin purses, key chains, nylon 6-10, polyester, fiberglass, other composites and more,” said sevenyear instructor Stephanie Parsons. “These allow us to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the substances and materials we are working

with, Students gain practical experiences with hands-on formation of materials; we then apply those experiences to the science, chemistry and processes behind them.”

First-year students are currently developing a working knowledge of basic chemistry and are practicing the naming of hydrocarbons while second year students are making daily observations of surface coatings they have coated test panels with.

“They are learning chemistry skills to better understand what happens in polymer synthesis, demonstrating and practicing various synthesis reactions and school-towork skills daily,”Parsons explained.

A lab-based chemistry and material science course, students earn four credits, two electives, one chemistry and one labbased science upon completion of the program.

“Students get a wellrounded experience from taking Polymer Science,” said Parsons. “We learn and practice professionalism and safety in the workplace, we learn to design 3D models and use computer applications effectively. We also learn how to work in a lab and

“Since polymers are everywhere and in everything, the versatility of the resources for teaching this course is infinite. No year of teaching this course is ever the same. Polymer Science is customizable within the provided curriculum framework,” she said. “This allows room for creativity and ability to connect to individual

Health Sciences Core and Health-care and Clinical Services What began as Allied Health in the late 80’s has morphed into two courses, Health Sciences Core for first-year students and Health-care and Clinical Services for second-year.

First year is based on the basics such as organization of the body, A&P of the body systems, diseases processes and treatment of each body system, medical terminology, safety, and communication and teamwork.

Once the student has mastered these processes they move on to year two and apply their knowledge to different career clusters, such as medical, nursing, emergency, rehabilitative, pharmacological and diagnostic services.

They learn specific skill sets geared toward each of the aforementioned career clusters and visit and shadow several of the occupations during the 100 plus state-mandated clinical hours they accrue.

We will be visiting the MRHC OP Rehab on Harper, the dietary department at MRHC, as well as Medical Plaza on Harper Road and having mental health speakers from Crossroads to speak with us soon.”

“The community plays an important role in the success of this class and I could not do it without their help,” she added.

Johnson credited her students as being the driving force behind her love of teaching.

“They are the reason I show up every morning.

I love that I play a small part in molding their future and I hope and pray it’s in a positive way,” she said. “Our classes are not just about the curriculum.

They are about life skills. I think we all, as instructors can be positive role models for these students.”

According to Johnson, those wishing enter the health-care field should take additional sciences when possible and make good grades in order to pursue a career in the medical field.

“I would love to see my program grow and the ACTC be able to provide these classes separately and all day with two instructors as there are 250 plus health-care related fields and Northeast Mississippi employs approximately 5,500 health-care related careers and projected to be 6,300 by the year 2020,” she said.

“Whether my students choose health-care for their future or not, my hopes are this program has assisted them to make an informed decision about their future.

The most important thing is for them to be happy in their career choice so they can make a positive difference in the future.”

“If you can see it in your mind, it will stick with you,” said Foster who has served as pastor of WSCC since the retirement of Bro. Ted Avant.

“My job is to set the stage while conveying God’s truth and then let the congregation retain and apply whatever the Lord convicts them of.”

Stepping up to the pulpit on Jan. 4, 2014, the Corinth resident said he is excited to see what God has in store for the church.

“It has been a challenging yet rewarding experience thus far,” he said.

“A transition of this nature requires a great deal of time, but is definitely worthwhile. I have grown a lot spiritually since my arrival here and have developed a great deal of love and respect for this community and its people.”

While he revealed he

didn’t always feel called to be a minister, Pastor Drew’s friends say he talked about it quite often before returning home from the 82nd Airborne where he served for four and a half years as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army.

“It was then that I really got serious about my faith,” he said. “So, I enrolled at Johnson University in Knoxville, Tenn. where I chose Preaching and Church Leadership as my major.”

Leading WSCC for a little over a year now, the 34-year-old has faced some fairly large challenges since accepting his position as pastor.

“Attempting to navigate those challenges through the grace of God has been a challenge for me, but one I find to be quite fruitful,” said Foster.

He deemed the most rewarding aspect of his role as having the opportunity to build relationships

within the church and with other ministers in the community.

“While conversing with fellow pastors, I recently learned that the churches here in Corinth used to be a lot more connected than they are now,” he said.

“There was no separation between people of differing races and they had all these wonderful activities like feet washing on the courthouse steps. It was a beautiful thing and I would really like to see us as a community get back to that.”

A devoted family man, Foster has been married to his now 30-year-old wife Rachel for the past five years. They are the proud parents of 20-month-old Abram and are expecting their second child, Annabelle on April 17.

In his spare time, the pastor enjoys hunting and fishing, but most of all, spending time with his growing family.

Heart valve disease is serious issue

Heart valve disease can develop before birth (congenital) or can be acquired during a person’s lifetime. Acquired valve disease is caused by changes to the valve from disease or infection.

Infections such as rheumatic fever or endocarditis can attack the heart valves. Other diseases that affect the heart valves include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and inflammation.

Some types of drugs and radiation may cause valve problems.

Symptoms of valvular heart disease include shortness of breath, weakness or dizziness,

Heart valve disease, or valvular heart disease, is any abnormality of one of the four heart valves (aortic, mitral, pulmonic, tricuspid).

The four valves of the heart make sure that blood flows one way (forward) through the heart and that there is no backward leakage.

This allows oxygen-poor blood to enter the heart, get pumped to the lungs where it picks up oxygen, and then get pumped out of the heart to supply the entire body with oxygenrich blood.

The process is then repeated over and over with each heartbeat.

COUNCE, Tenn. — The Pickwick Landing Rotary Club is all fired up.

The organization is bringing out the boas and beads on Fat Tuesday to help a local volunteer fire department.

Proceeds from the annual Mardi Gras Bash are set to be passed on to the District 3 Fire Department.

“I think it’s a great idea to have an organization come in and help us,” said District 3 Fire Chief Richard Childers.

“Anything we raise goes right back into the building.”

According to Childers, money from the event will be used to add a dormitory/living quarters to the existing building.

“This will allow them to always have a firefighter on the premises and at the ready when they are called,” said Pam Goese with the Rotary Club. “By making the improvement, the department can lower its fire insurance rating which will lower our taxes.”

“I am just guessing, but we are looking at a $15,000-$20,000 cost,” said Childers.

Freddy T’s will host the annual Mardi Gras Bash. Festivities get started at 6 p.m. with cocktails. A karaoke challenge – “put your money where your mouth is” – is expected to draw a lot of interest.

“If you don’t want to sing, you should bring your checkbook,” said Goese.

Tickets for the party are $40 in advance or $50 at the door.

A cajun dinner will be served.

“Dinner is cajun all

That means plenty of gumbo, rice and beans along with shrimp and grits.

The band “Magi” will perform at 7:30 p.m. and a live auction is slated for the evening.

“We want people to grab a date, mask, boa, some cash and head over to Freddy T’s for a generous helping of fun,” said Goese.

“Everybody wins in the event,” said Goese.

“Firefighters sleep comfortably on the premises and we all sleep better knowing they are there.”

Special election to fill vacant congressional seat Associated Press

JACKSON — Gov. Phil Bryant will set a special election later this year to fill a congressional seat in north Mississippi.

Republican U.S. Rep. Alan Nunnelee was

first elected to the seat in 2010 and died Friday. He was sworn in last month to begin his third, two-year term.

State law says that within 60 days of the seat becoming vacant, the governor must issue

an order to set a special election.

The date the governor chooses must be at least 60 days after he issues the order. This creates a broad range for when an election could occur, starting as soon as April.

Valves can be repaired or replaced by traditional heart valve surgery or minimally invasive heart valve surgery, which is appropriate for some people.

Once heart valve disease is diagnosed, it is important to keep followup appointments with healthcare providers, understand the type of heart valve disease and which valve is affected, and take prescribed medications.

The goals of treatment include protecting the heart from further damage, managing symptoms, and repairing or replacing heart valves when necessary.

TUPELO — The funeral for U.S. Rep. Alan Nunnelee of Mississippi is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Monday at Calvary Baptist Church in Tupelo.

Nunnelee, 56, died Friday at his home in Tupelo from inoperable brain cancer and complications from a subsequent stroke.

Officials at W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors and Mississippi State University confirmed the funeral arrangements.

Visitation is 2 p.m.5 p.m. today at the church.

Survivors include his wife, Tori; two sons, Reed and Nathan; a daughter, Emily Nunnelee Thompson; and two grandchildren.

Valve disease is diagnosed by physical examination and other tests.

During a physical exam, a healthcare provider may hear a murmur. A murmur is a swishing sound made when blood flows through a stenotic or leaky valve. The most common diagnostic test is an echocardiogram, which is an ultrasound of the heart.

Treatment for heart valve disease depends on the type and severity of the valve problem. Medications may be prescribed to control blood pressure and cholesterol. The only way to correct a heart valve problem is with surgery.

Consider unit system It’s embarrassing when the Mississippi State Auditor comes to your county and identifies it as a place where there is a “culture of corruption.”

That’s what Stacey Pickering said recently when he arrived in Alcorn County to announce the indictment of District 2 Supervisor Dal Nelms for embezzlement.

Nelms, the county purchase clerk and several vendors are charged with being involved in a conspiracy designed to embezzle and/or convert money, equipment and property from Alcorn County, announced the state auditor.

Not only does Nelms face serious criminal charges, but he also has been issued a civil demand to repay just over $300,000 to Alcorn County.

In the future, how do we keep a supervisor from paying rent on a bulldozer with no engine in it?

We want to begin a public discussion of the need to change our form of county government.

Alcorn County currently has what is called the beat system, whereby supervisors have nearly unabridged administrative powers over their geographically defined sub-county districts or “beats.” In this system, the individual supervisor decides how and when road work is completed within their district. There is a belief this helps a supervisor better connect with the needs of the district.

“Beat” supervisors may hire, discipline and fire their county employees and there is no requirement of written personnel policies.

Let’s consider going to the unit system in Alcorn County.

Here’s why.

There are no road districts in the unit system. Construction and maintenance of the roads and bridges are managed based on the needs of the county as a whole.

The county has one central road repair and maintenance facility, but more can be added as necessary.

In the unit system, there are no separate supervisor offices in each district. There is just one central facility. We already have this here with the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors building in the renovated county jail on Fulton Drive. It is a great facility with room to add more office space.

Supervisors appoint a county administrator in the unit system. This person can’t be a supervisor and must have work experience in budget planning, work projection, personnel management, accounting, purchasing and cost control. This professional administers all county affairs falling under control of supervisors and carries out policies. The county administrator can be assigned other duties.

Unit systems must also have a road manager appointed by supervisors to run the countywide road department.

The road manager oversees all construction and maintenance of public roads and bridges, carries out general policies and employs people as necessary.

The position is in charge of equipment, personnel and employee assignments. The road manager also is responsible for all equipment, supplies and materials for the road department.

Once a unit system is established in a county, a personnel system must be adopted and is carried out by the county administrator.

Both unit and beat systems in the state are required to establish and operate a central purchasing system.

But here’s the kicker. In the unit system, supervisors can’t make any purchases under any circumstances.

Getting the picture?

This unit system came about in Mississippi after an FBI investigation from 1984-1987 called “Operation Pretense” led to the conviction of 57 of the state’s 410 supervisors, one county road foreman, two state highway commissioners and 13 vendors on bribery, extortion and other felony charges.

Almost all were convicted, had to pay back money and spent time in prison.

Learn more about this sting in a book by James R. Crockett called “Operation Pretense: The FBI’s Sting on County Corruption in Mississippi.” Another good read is the 2004 study by three college professors called “No pretense to honesty: County government corruption in Mississippi.”

After all the corruption backlash, Mississippi residents went to the polls to chose between the two county governance systems. At that time, 47 counties voted for the unit system and 35 selected the beat system.

Twenty-two counties petitioned for a re-vote in 1992 and three unit counties went back to the beat system.

Naysayers of the unit system will point out the extra cost of two county employees, plus some cost with a move to a more centralized system. Others will say the unit takes away the authority of supervisors.

But we want to point out the bigger picture.

How in the world can we attract business and industry to Alcorn County when we make headlines across the state as a place for corruption?

Going to the unit system would be a good first step.

But as much as Barbour relied on Nunnelee for much of his legislative agenda, Nunnelee in 2006 and 2007 bucked Barbour over the governor’s opposition to efforts to cut Mississippi’s sales tax on food when he said: “For the poorest state in the nation to have the highest sales tax on groceries is cruel.”

Squaring off with Barbour on the grocery tax issue, Nunnelee said it bothers him that Mississippi had the third lowest tax on cigarettes and the highest state-imposed tax on food.

“I don’t think that is something Mississippi should be proud of,” Nunnelee said. “If I can be helpful in correcting that problem, I am interested in being part of that solution.”

Nunnelee became a leader, a player at the highest levels, in crafting public policy in Mississippi. As it was in MSU students politics, Alan won some and he lost some, but he never quit and he always gave it his best regardless the odds against him.

Finally, Nunnelee’s successful 2010 race to unseat incumbent Democrat Travis Childers of Booneville was typical. Nunnelee unseated Childers

by defeating Childers and seven independent or minor party candidates.

In 2012, Nunnelee dispatched Democrat Brad Morris and two minor party nominees with over 60 percent of the vote. In 2014, Nunnelee cruised to re-election.

From his days at State to his days in the Mississippi State Capitol to his congressional service, Alan Nunnelee made a difference. His courage and his deep desire to serve were always evident. Perhaps more important is the fact in the midst of the political grind, Alan Nunnelee has never lost his good humor and his humanity.

Alan was a good husband, a good father and grandfather, and a reliable and trustworthy friend. He served the public trust honorably in Jackson and in Washington for 20 years.

Entering hospice was a choice to put Alan’s future where I’m certain he would have told you he believes it has always been — in God’s hands.

He remained in hospice until his death on Feb. 6 and the next leg of his remarkable journey began.

two men — neither of whom grew up in a ghetto — have been quick to play the role of defenders of the ghetto, even when that meant defending the kinds of hoodlums who can make life a living hell for decent people in black ghettos.

Far from benefitting ghetto blacks, the vision presented by the Obama administration, and the policies growing out of that vision, have a track record of counterproductive results on both sides of the Atlantic — that is, among low-income whites in England as well as low-income blacks in the United States.

The Jan. 31 issue of the distinguished British magazine “The Economist” reports that the children of African refugees from Somalia do far better in school than lowincome British children in general. “Somali immigrants,” it reports, “insist that their children turn up for extra lessons at weekends.” These are “well-ordered children” and their parents understand that education “is their ticket out of poverty.”

not reduce their disciplining of black males for misbehavior. Despite whatever political benefit or personal satisfaction that may give Barack Obama and Eric Holder, reducing the sanctions against misbehavior in school virtually guarantees that classroom disorder will make the teaching of other black students far less effective, if not impossible.

For black children whose best ticket out of poverty is education, that is a lifelong tragedy, even if it is a political bonanza to politicians who claim to be their friends and defenders.

The biggest advantage that the children of low-income immigrants have over the children of native-born, lowincome families is that low-income immigrants have not been saturated for generations with the rhetoric of victimhood and hopelessness, spread by people like Obama, Holder and their counterparts overseas.

Saudi Arabia, 9/11 questions raised WASHINGTON — For years, some current and former American officials have been urging President Barack Obama to release secret files they say document links between the government of Saudi Arabia and the Sept. 11 attacks.

Others have said the classified documents do not prove that the Saudi government knew about or financed the 2001 terrorist attacks, and that making the material public would serve no purpose.

Now, unsubstantiated court testimony by Zacharias Moussaoui, a former al-Qaida member serving life in federal prison, has renewed the push by those who want a closer look into whether there was official Saudi involvement with al-Qaida and the Sept. 11 hijackers.

Fewer drivers drink, more using drugs WASHINGTON — The number of drivers on the road with alcohol in their systems has declined by nearly onethird since 2007, but there has been a large increase in drivers using marijuana and other illegal drugs, a government report released Friday found.

The report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the share of drivers who test positive for alcohol has declined by more than three-quarters since the agency first began conducting roadside surveys in 1973.

But the latest survey, conducted in 2013 and 2014, also found that 22 percent of drivers tested positive for at least one drug that could affect safety. That includes illegal drugs as well as prescription and over-the-counter medications.

The anonymous surveys have been conducted five times over the last 40 years. They gather data in dozens of locations across the country from drivers who agree to participate.

Mediha Medy Salkicevic, a 34-year-old mother of four from the Chicago suburb of Schiller Park, was arrested by the FBI on Friday.

Like the other defendants, she’s charged with conspiring to provide material support to terrorists and providing material support to groups designated by the U.S. as foreign terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State group and an alQaida-affiliated group known as the Nusra Front. If convicted, she could face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 on each charge.

Salkicevic, wearing an orange jail uniform, spoke only to confirm that she understood the charges.

The case will be tried in Missouri, where several other defendants were arrested. A Monday bond hearing will determine whether Salkicevic travels there on her own or in custody.

West gets break before next storm SAN FRANCISCO — Northern California got a break Saturday from a wet and windy storm that downed trees and power lines, ripped through freeway and street signs and led to dozens of flight cancellations at San Francisco’s airport.

But that break was expected to be shortlived, as another storm system barreled toward the region with more rain and wind.

The sun peeked through the clouds on Saturday in San Francisco, where scattered showers were expected throughout the day.

The next storm system was forecast to hit on Sunday morning, bringing wind gusts as high as 45 mph and up to 3 inches of additional rain on coastal hills in the San Francisco Bay Area and another 1.5 inches on Bay Area cities.

“The winds will be up again, especially along the coast,” said Austin Cross, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.

The storm system was expected to affect much of the West Coast, with a flood warning in effect for parts of Oregon and the threat of landslides in western Washington.

The rains will persist into the weekend, and weather officials warn of flooding in several rivers in western Washington.

In the Bay Area, more than 60,000 people lost power, as winds from Friday’s storm brought down trees that took out power lines.

IS hostage’s family remaining hopeful PRESCOTT, Arizona — The parents of a 26-year-old American who Islamic State extremists say was killed in an airstrike in Syria said in a statement addressed to group leaders that the claim of their daughter’s death concerned them but they were still hopeful she was alive.

The Islamic State group said on Friday that Kayla Jean Mueller of Prescott, Arizona, died in a Jordanian airstrike, but the government of Jordan dismissed the statement as propaganda, and the U.S. said it had not seen any evidence to corroborate the report.

Mueller is the only known remaining U.S. hostage held by the Islamic State group.

If the death is confirmed, she would be the fourth American to die while being held by Islamic State militants.

Three others — journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and aid worker Peter Kassig — were beheaded by the group.

Probe continues in burning death COURTLAND — Authorities say they are still investigating the burning death of a woman in north Mississippi.

Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby tells The Clarion-Ledger that local, state and federal investigators are still working on the case.

It’s been two months after 19-year-old Jessica Chambers was killed.

Darby would not reveal what authorities have found.

District Attorney John Champion says investigators have checked 400 or 500 leads.

Chambers was found Dec. 6 near her burning car on a rural road outside Courtland. She was declared dead early Dec. 7 after being airlifted to a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

D’Iberville officers wear body cameras D’IBERVILLE — The D’Iberville Police Department is giving its officers a more durable, lightweight option for body cameras.

Police officers have had body cameras for over a year but the cameras weren’t reliable.

The police department recently upgraded to cameras with 15 hours of battery life and almost endless recording capacity.

Officers can watch how they responded on their cellphones. Chief Wayne Payne can look at the video on the computer.

Officers will wear cameras while on duty, and at the end of their shifts place the cameras in docking stations that will simultaneously recharge them and upload data.

Most D’Iberville patrol cars are equipped with cameras too, so nearly everything a police officer does can be filmed with just a few clicks.

Senators support e-filing of reports JACKSON — Mississippi Republican Sens.

Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker are supporting legislation to require Senate candidates to electronically file campaign finance reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Senate candidates now first file paper copies of reports with the secretary of the senate.

Senate campaign committees are the only federal political committees not filing reports and statements electronically with the FEC directly.

Cochran says in a news release that electronic filing will improve efficiency, cut spending and allow the public to see the information faster.

Wicker says the electronic filing of campaign reports is a simpler, streamlined approach that is long overdue.

Bill would transfer coliseum to county BILOXI — Legislation pending in the Mississippi House would transfer the Gulf Coast Coliseum and its $7 million trust fund to the control of Harrison County.

WLOX-TV in Biloxi reports it’s a multi-million dollar compromise that could end 38 years of the Coast Coliseum being run as a state agency.

Currently, Mississippi governors choose half of the members of the Coliseum Commission.

Under House Bill 848, all appointments will be local: five from Harrison County and one each from the cities of Gulfport and Biloxi.

The commission now receives the interest earned from a $7 million trust fund, which is running about $180,000 a year.

“We need access to the $7 million to make sure we can use that fund, leverage that fund, and make sure we can get a hotel in here. So not only to increase the activity in the convention center, but the economic impact on the coast area,” said Commissioner C.T. Switzer.

Safety complex gets state’s green light MOSS POINT — Moss Point officials say they have assurances that the state of Mississippi will help pay for construction of a new safety complex.

The complex will include a new jail.

City board attorney Amy St. Pe’ says the Mississippi Development Authority will also help expedite the construction contract reviews.

The Mississippi Press reports the total cost for the complex is about $3.4 million. The funding comes from the city, the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

St. Pe’ says the next step is to find out how quickly the architect can get the bids ready for advertisement and draw up a timeline for the entire project.

The two-story facility will be located near the main fire station. It will have administrative offices, courtrooms, meeting space and an evidence room.

Obama: U.S. must resist urge to ‘overreach’ abroad

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama, outlining a new national security blueprint for his last two years in office, warned against American “overreach” abroad Friday, even as he cast the U.S. as an indispensable force in combating global challenges including terrorism, climate change and cyber threats.

The 29-page document released by the White House hews closely to Obama’s long-held views and forecasts no major shifts in the military campaign against Islamic State militants or in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Obama said threat of terrorism against

the homeland “has diminished, but still persists” and vowed to degrade extremist groups like the Islamic State using counterterrorism operations and global coalitions, not large-scale, American-led ground wars.

“The United States will always defend our interests and uphold our commitments to allies and partners ... ,” he wrote in an introduction to the White House strategy paper.

The president is required by law to send Congress a national security strategy annually. However, most presidents, including Obama, have done so only sporadically. Obama’s only previous memo to lawmakers came in

2010 and formalized his desire to broaden U.S. national security posture beyond antiterror campaigns.

Obama’s critics have accused the president of putting his desire to keep the U.S. out of overseas conflicts ahead of the need for more robust action against the world’s bad actors.

Some members of Congress have called for Obama to send more American ground troops to the Middle East to combat the Islamic State group, while also pushing for the White House to authorize shipments of defensive weapons to Ukraine to help its beleaguered military in the fight against Russian-backed separatists.

The duo performed for over 30 years together before Johnson passed in 1998.

“Their big break came in 1968,” said Miller. “While performing at a Memphis nightclub, the duo were asked for some demos and were soon on their way to recording with Hi Recording Studio in Memphis.”

While with Hi Records, the pair released a pair of 45 records with the songs “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “Is It Over?” which Mosley performed under the pseudonym, David Duke.

In 1971, Mosley and Johnson released their first album together, Mississippi Mud, under their own record label – Sabo Music – as Sam and Bob and the Soulmen.

Soon after the release of Mississippi Mud, Mosley and Johnson found themselves at Malaco Records in Jackson and produced three albums for the central Mississippi label.

In addition to their own record release, Johnson and Mosley also recorded for Polydor records in the 1970s as Mojoba before finally finding their identity as The Mosley and Johnson Band.

“Neither one of them had formal music training,” said Miller. “They steadily learned the music world and became one of the go-to duos for not only performing on stage, but also in a studio and writing songs for other artists.”

Throughout their careers, Mosley and Johnson had the

opportunity to work with the vaunted Muscle Shoals studio band in Alabama.

Mosley and Johnson’s career continues to reach new heights throughout the 1980s with the release for the self-titled album “Mosley & Johnson” in 1985 and “Mosley & Johnson Premium” in 1987. Johnson and Mosley’s song, “Rock Me,” came off the 1985 album and the duo’s “Slide On,” helped the pair earn their first gold record for songwriting and producing.

However, in 1989, Mosley and Johnson reached the international market when the pair set out on a European tour and played in such European cities as London, Paris and Switzerland. The pinnacle of the European tour for Mosley and Johnson was the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland where the duo got to perform on stage with blues musician B.B. King.

Sadly, Johnson passed away while performing onstage during a Verona performance in 1998 but Mosley has kept the name alive and continued to perform with Johnson’s brothers Willie and Miles as part of the Mosley Johnson Band.

In 2008, The Mosley Johnson Band was honored with a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail in New Albany at the corner of Washington and Cleveland streets.

Mosley, a Northeast alum and U.S. Army Veteran, was part of the NE football squad in the late 1960s. Following a stint in the United States Army from 1965-67 which included a tour of Vietnam in 1966-67, Mosley and fellow NEMCC alum Robert “Bob” Johnson were recruited to play football at Northeast by Tiger head coach William B. “Bill” Ward.

In the first game back from an 11-year hiatus, Mosley hauled in the first touchdown pass of the college’s modern football era and helped Northeast beat Southwest Mississippi 33-20 on September 7, 1968.

Mosley and Johnson continued their music partnership after Mosley returned from his tour in the Army. when they formed the ensemble “Mosley and Johnson.”

The pair also performed under the group names of “Bobby Johnson and the Messengers,” “Sam and Bob and The Soul Men,” and even “Mojoba,” before finally settling in on “The Mosley and Johnson Band.”

“Their music was in high demand in the Mississippi Hill Country and across the Magnolia State,” said Miller.

“The two have their own Mississippi Blues Trail marker in New Albany in recognition of their contribution to the blues in Mississippi.”

SELMER, Tenn. — Funeral services for Nellie Sue Sappington,72, is today at 3 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors with burial at Falcon Cemetery in Selmer, Tenn. Mike Hollaway will officiate.

Mrs. Sappington died February 6, 2015 in Sappington Savannah, Tenn.

She was born on February 3, 1943 in Belmont to the late Hollis and Charlene Stanfill Higginbottom. She was a Baptist and a former 20 year employee of Levi Strauss in Ramer, Tenn.

Sue loved sewing, quilting and had a host of friends and family on Facebook that she loved very much.

Survivors included a daughter, Nelda Sappington of Jackson, Tenn.; two sons, Billy

Brenda Carolyn Locke Derryberry SELMER, Tenn. — Funeral services for Brenda Carolyn Locke Derryberry, 70, are set for Monday at 11 a.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors with burial at Indian Creek Cemetery in Ramer, Tenn.

Visitation is today from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. to service time.

Mrs. Derryberry died February 6, 2015. Born April 4, 1944 to the late Estell T. and Vadell Hicks Locke, she was a store owner in Ramer, Tenn. and was employee of General Electric in Selmer, Tenn. and Levi Strauss in Ramer, Tenn.

Survivors include her husband Terry Derryberry of Ramer, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Amelia Gabrielle Young of Ramer, Tenn.; four sisters, Martha Bess Locke Ashe (Charles) of Selmer, Tenn., Rubye Locke Mathis (Owen) of Selmer, Tenn., Jimmie Locke Crowe (Richard) of Selmer, Tenn. and Kaye Locke Massengill of Ramer, Tenn.; a brother, Dwight E. Locke Freida) of Selmer, Tenn.; and a host of extended family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Melinda Carol (Derryberry) Young; two sisters, Betty Sue Locke Horton and Peggy Jo Locke Kyle.

BLUE MOUNTAIN — Billie Margaret Floyd, 78, died Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Tippah County Hospital.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 7 at the Heritage Chapel of Ripley Funeral Home with burial at Little Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Floyd was born March 11, 1936 to the late James Robert and Frances Almedia Ketchum Presley. She was member of Flat Rock Baptist Church and was an employee of Munsingwear.

Survivors included her husband of 61 years, Wallace Floyd of Blue Mountain; one daughter, Pat Daniel (James) of Corinth; four sons, Billy Joe Floyd (Kathy), Dean Floyd (Sonya) and Boyd Floyd, all of Blue Mountain, and Virgil Floyd (Barbara) of Myrtle; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Guyton Presley (June) of Memphis, Tate Presley (Martha) and Tom Presley (Bobbie); one sister, Janice Richardson (Billy) all of Ripley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Harold Presley; a sister, Elsie Bell Wood; and one sister-in-law, Judy Presley. Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Bro. Terry Floyd officiated the service.

Republican Meeting

The annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway is set for Friday, Feb. 13, in front of the Alcorn County Courthouse from 8:30 a.m. until all the trees are distributed. Some pines and mixed hardwoods will be available.

It is a project of the MSU Extension Service in Alcorn County, the Mississippi Forestry Commission and the Alcorn County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The Alcorn County Republican Party will be meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12 in the Corinth Library. The special guest speaker will be Trent Kelly, District Attorney. There will be a meet and greet at 5:45 p.m.

The Fort Worth, Texas company said Thursday that it has filed a motion to proceed with closing the rest of its 4,000 U.S. stores. It is also having discussions to sell all of its remaining assets.

RadioShack Corp. introduced one of the first mass-market personal computers and used to be the go-to stop for consumers’ home electronics needs. But it struggled as shoppers increasingly shifted to making purchases online and growth in its wireless business slowed. It has suffered years of losses.

The New York Stock Exchange suspended trading of its shares on Monday and sought to delist it. The NYSE requires companies meet certain market capitalization thresholds to remain on the exchange.

RadioShack had warned of a possible bankruptcy in September, but received rescue financing that kept it afloat. Still, its CEO recently cautioned the chain might not be able to find a long-term plan to stay in business.

RadioShack worked hard on its turnaround efforts, hiring Walgreen Co. executive Joseph Magnacca as its CEO and former Treasury Department adviser Harry J. Wilson as chief revitalization officer. It also developed relationships with popular brands like Beats Audio and redesigned almost half of its U.S. locations — some 2,000 stores — in an effort to entice younger shoppers.

The company, which has not turned a profit since 2011, still operates nearly 5,500 stores and employs about 27,500 people worldwide, according to its last annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Market up; jobless still frustrated

WASHINGTON — The job market remains a frustrating place for America’s 9 million unemployed — perhaps more so as hiring has accelerated along with job postings.

The pace of job growth over the past three months was the fastest in 17 years.

The gains spanned nearly every industry, and some employers have finally had to dangle higher pay to attract or retain top talent.

And yet millions of job seekers still can’t find work. Some businesses remain slow to fill their openings, awaiting the ideal candidate. Many job seekers lack the skills employers require.

The plight of the unemployed also reflects an economic reality: Even in the best times, the number of job seekers is typically twice the number of job openings.

The January jobs report that the government issued Friday pointed to another factor, too: As hiring strengthens, more people typically start looking for jobs. As the number of job seekers grows, so does competition for work.

The number of openings has reached nearly 5 million, the most since 2001. Yet that’s barely more than half the number of people the government counts as unemployed. “There’s always going to be a set of job vacancies, and there are always going to be a set of people transitioning from unemployment to work,� said Tara Sinclair, an economics professor at George Washington University.

New employee disheartened by her boss’ early critique DEAR ABBY: I am 26 and recently started a new job that I consider a leap forward in my career.

It’s been only two weeks, and my boss has already told me she thinks I am “trying too hard” and Abigail “compensatVan Buren ing for my age.” Honestly, I was Dear Abby just excited to come in to work and do my best. This is my work ethic.

I have swallowed her criticism and am now lying low, but my confidence is shot and I’m now questioning if I made the right decision joining this company.

I can try to be quiet for a few weeks, but internally it is torture.

I thought I was hired for my leadership skills and experience, but apparently I am “intimidating.”

I have tried to brush the criticism off and put it in perspective, but I’m really hurt that traits I have been praised for before are being picked over now.

How do I put these feelings aside and continue to work, and what should my approach be?

How much should I modify who I am? -- SECOND GUESSING

DEAR SECOND GUESSING: Sometimes when starting a new job, it is wise to remain quiet until one gets the “lay of the land” and understands how the company functions before jumping in.

My advice is to continue to lie low. If things don’t improve, schedule another conference with your boss.

Tell her you thought you had been hired for your leadership skills and experience, but if you are coming across to others as abrasive, you need to know so you can change it.

Let her guide you. If it doesn’t work out after that, recognize that not all job placements are a good fit and start looking for something that is.

DEAR ABBY: We entertain frequently because, in our large group of longtime friends, we are the only ones who do. In this way we assure to some degree that the friendships survive.

Folks sometimes volunteer to bring something, but often they don’t.

Even when they do, they put it together while I’m in the middle of my own preparations.

They interrupt me by asking for a serving dish and sometimes want to use the oven while I am using it. This is not my idea of “helping.”

Otherwise, they are very dear people, but with the passage of

time I am losing my affection for them. If we don’t entertain, no one will and the friendships won’t survive. Abby, do you have any suggestions or is it too late?

Even if these “friends” are unwilling or unable to entertain on the scale that you do, they long ago should have made some attempt to reciprocate your hospitality, and they appear to have made little or no effort.

You might feel less taken advantage of if you widen your circle of acquaintances to include some couples with a stronger grasp of the social graces.

Holmes joins English in lead at Torrey Pines Associated Press

SAN DIEGO — J.B. Holmes birdied all but one of the par 5s at Torrey Pines and escaped with bogey on his one big miss Saturday, giving him a 4-under 68 to join Harris English at the top of a crowded leaderboard in the Farmers Insurance Open.

Given this is the South Course at Torrey Pines, Sunday might be more about survival than shootout.

“This is a U.S. Open golf course,” English said. “And you’ve got to treat it like that.”

English led by as many as three shots early in the third round until his streak of 39 holes at par or better ended with a double bogey on No. 4.

He lost the lead again late in his round with a poor chip on the 16th and had to settle for a 1-over 73.

They were at 9-under 207 with a host of contenders behind them. Of the 12 players separated by only two shots going into the final round, all but three have won on the PGA Tour and two them — Jimmy Walker and Bill Haas — have won in the last month.

In the previous four events this year, two in Hawaii and two in the desert, a score like 73 would be enough to send someone out of contention. The South Course at Torrey Pines, host of the 2008 U.S. Open, is different with its length and its thick rough. Jhonattan Vegas, two shots behind, hit one tee shot on the 14th hole that missed the fairway by a few feet and he had to stoop over just to see his golf ball.

Shuckers to start 2015 home slate away from Biloxi Associated Press

BILOXI — The Biloxi Shuckers, formerly the Huntsville Stars, will play at least 15 home games at Joe W. Davis Stadium this summer.

The Southern League is sending a revised 2015 schedule, noting the reshuffling of games to Huntsville, Alabama. The Stars, owned by Ken Young and other partners, have a lease with the City of Huntsville for the use of the stadium through the end of this season.

The Shuckers, the Class AA affiliate of the Brewers, will be playing in a new stadium in Biloxi but the park remains under construction.

General Manager Buck Rogers said the first home series on April 20-24 against the Jacksonville Suns in Jacksonville, Florida.

The next three home series will be played in Huntsville. The Shuckers will also move a May 6 home stand to Pearl, Mississippi, where they will play the Mississippi Braves.

“In fairness to the rest of our teams, the league, the umpires, our parent club the Brewers, we had to make a backup plan,” said Rogers.

MGM Park is currently under construction on U.S. Highway 90 across the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi.

Rogers said if MGM Park is ready after the completion of the team’s first four originally planned home series, the Shuckers could be play their first series in Biloxi starting on June 6 against the Mobile BayBears.

Rogers said once he receives official word when MGM Park will be able to open, he will notify the league and within seven days, all Shuckers home games will be played in Biloxi.

MSU falters against Razorbacks

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Bobby Portis scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Arkansas used a stifling firsthalf defensive effort to defeat Mississippi State 61-41 on Saturday.

The Razorbacks (18-5, 7-3 Southeastern Conference) held the Bulldogs to just 2 of 21 (9.5 percent) from the field in the first half on their way to a 30-9 halftime lead. That included a 13:22 scoreless stretch by Mississippi State (11-12, 4-6), which missed its final 16 shots of the half.

Portis, Arkansas’ preseason first-team All-SEC selection, finished in double figures for the 18th straight game. Anthlon Bell added 12 points for the Razorbacks, who have won five of their last six games.

Gavin Ware led the Bulldogs, who had their two-

game win streak snapped, with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Arkansas took its newfound defensive presence to an entirely new level against Mississippi State.

Mississippi State recovered from its cold-shooting first half to hit 12 of 24 shots (50 percent) in the second — finishing 14 of 45 (31.1 percent) for the game.

The damage, however, had already been done by an Arkansas team that challenged the school’s 90-yearold record for fewest points allowed in a half. The Razorbacks allowed six points to the Fort Smith (Ark.) National Guard in 1925.

Arkansas had six steals in the first half, forcing 14 turnovers overall while building a 30-9 halftime lead.

The defensive effort continued a turnaround for a Razorbacks team that was

272nd in the country a few weeks ago while allowing opponents to shoot 44.5 percent from the field. Arkansas entered the game having held its last four opponents to a combined 41.2 percent shooting (93 of 226), rising to 201st nationally, and Saturday continued that defensive surge.

While the Razorbacks frustrated Mississippi State on defense, Portis continued to shine on both ends of the court. The sophomore was 8 of 14 from the field and finished in double figures in both points and rebounds for the eighth time in his last nine games.

Arkansas finished with 22 points off 24 turnovers by the Bulldogs.

Arkansas extends Bielema’s contract

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas has seen enough of Bret Bielema in two seasons to make it want the former Wisconsin coach to stick around a while longer.

Following its first winning season in three years, the school announced the signing of its football coach to a two-year contract extension on Saturday, keeping Bielema with the Razorbacks through 2020.

Bielema, who led to the Razorbacks to a 7-6 season and their first bowl game in three seasons last year, will also receive a raise from his previous $3.2 million salary — making

an average of $4.25 million annually over the six-year deal. He’ll make $4 million this year with annual raises of $100,000 after that, culminating with a base salary of $4.5 million in 2020.

“Every day since we arrived in Fayetteville, we have worked with our coaches and student-athletes on building something special here at the University of Arkansas,” Bielema said in a statement.

“We have assembled another great staff and recruiting class to help us continue to move forward in the SEC West.”

The new contract also raises his buyout, if he were to leave Arkansas, from $2 million to $4 million in 2015. The

buyout decreases by $1 million annually through 2018 and is $500,000 in 2019 and $250,000 in 2020.

If the school fires Bielema over the next three years, it would owe him $15.4 million.

That staggering amount of security drops to $11.7 million in 2018, $7.9 million in 2019 and finally $4 million in 2020.

The former Wisconsin coach was 3-9 in his first year in Arkansas in 2013, inheriting the fallout from the Bobby Petrino scandal and one season under interim coach John L. Smith. The Razorbacks dramatically improved in 2014, led by a defense that rose from 76th nationally in

2013 to 10th — helping the school end a 17-game Southeastern Conference losing streak.

Arkansas ended its season with three wins in its final four games, including backto-back shutouts over LSU and Mississippi as well as a dominating 31-7 win over Texas in the Texas Bowl.

“What Coach Bielema and his coaching staff have done for our young men, on and off the field, is something that has dramatically changed the course of our program and most importantly positively impacted the lives of our football student-athletes,” Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said.

Frazier’s late scoring lifts Georgia past Vols

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia’s J.J. Frazier found his shooting touch with time to make an impact with three 3-pointers.

Tennessee’s Josh Richardson couldn’t end his scoring drought until the final minute — too late to save the Vols.

Frazier scored 10 points, all in the final 11 minutes, and Georgia overcame turnover problems to edge Tennessee 56-53 on Saturday.

“I was missing bad early and I had to try to find my rhythm again,” Frazier said.

Georgia (15-7, 6-4 Southeastern Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak despite matching its season high with 20 turnovers.

Tennessee’s aggressive zone defense forced Georgia to push the ball inside — which accelerated the Bulldogs’ turnover rate. The Vols’ defense was especially effective in negating the impact of Fra-

zier, who was scoreless until sinking his first 3-pointer with 10:28 remaining.

Frazier added two more 3s in the next two minutes. His third 3 gave Georgia a 51-42 lead.

Frazier, who scored a career-high 37 points at Mississippi State on Jan. 24, ranks second in the league with his 48.8 percent shooting on 3s in conference games.

Tennessee (13-9, 5-5) has lost two straight and four of five.

After a free throw by Tennessee’s Kevin Punter with seven seconds remaining cut the Georgia lead to three points, the Vols rebounded his missed second free throw.

Richardson missed a potential tying 3-pointer.

There was a scramble for the rebound near the Tennessee bench as time expired, and Georgia’s Charles Mann slowly left the court holding his head.

Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall was hoping for a 3-pointer — or a chance for three free throws — on Richardson’s shot.

“I kind of wish Josh had leaned into the contact and not away from it,” Tyndall said. “But the kids played hard. It literally came down to the last possession.”

Richardson, who leads the Vols with 16.2 points per game, had only two points.

He was 0 for 11 from the field before finally scoring with 30 seconds remaining. It was only the third time this season the senior has not scored in double figures.

Mann and Nemanja Djurisic had 10 points apiece for Georgia. Mann had six turnovers.

Armani Moore led the Vols with 16 points. Robert Hubbs III had 15 and Punter had 10.

A tip-in by Hubbs with 1:46 remaining brought Tennessee to within three points at 5330. Following a miss near the

basket by Marcus Thornton, Tennessee called timeout with 1:14 remaining. While moving with the ball, Moore slipped and was called for traveling.

Georgia stretched the lead to five points on a jam by Djurisic, who was left open as the Vols’ defense swarmed the ball on the perimeter.

Vanderbilt rallies to beat South Carolina

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Riley LaChance scored 19 points to lead a Vanderbilt comeback as the Commodores rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to beat South Carolina 65-50 at Memorial Gym on Saturday.

The Commodores (13-10,

3-7 Southeastern Conference) trailed 41-27 with 13:46 left before rallying.

An 18-0 run triggered the comeback for Vanderbilt, which has won two straight since ending a seven-game losing streak in Tuesday’s win over Florida.

Philly University’s Magee earns 1,000th career win Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia University coach Herb Magee has become the second NCAA men’s basketball coach to win 1,000 games.

Magee hit the milestone with the Rams’ 80-60 win over Post on Saturday. He has won all 1,000 games over 48 seasons at the 3,600-student private Division II university in Philadelphia.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is the only other NCAA men’s coach to win 1,000 games. Krzyzewski won his 1,000th game on Jan. 25 against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden. He is the fourth men’s coach in all divisions to reach the milestone.

Magee needed two tries after the Rams (15-6, 9-3 Central Athletic Collegiate Conference) lost this week to Wilmington.

“Relief. I don’t make that up,” Magee said. “That’s the way I felt. Ask my wife, she’ll tell you. It’s been a tough situation because the hype is there and everyone is pulling for us as a team but they’re really pulling for me to get 1,000 wins because they know how important it is. It means a lot.”

Magee didn’t really celebrate, going right over to shake hands with the Post coach and players. He was then swarmed by TV cameras and did a live interview with ESPN. Magee took the microphone on the court and thanked the students.

“One of the reasons we won that game is because of fan enthusiasm,” he said.

Magee has earned all of his victories at Philly U and has become a local hoops icon and a Naismith Hall of Fame

coach.

He set the school’s scoring record (then known as Philadelphia Textile), bypassed a shot with the Boston Celtics to take a job at the school as an assistant, then became head coach in 1967.

He led the program to a national championship in 1970.

Magee earned win No. 1 in his first game as coach with a 62-50 victory over Trenton State (now The College of New Jersey) on Dec. 1, 1967.

Magee has had only one losing season and built his career with regular 20-win seasons and NCAA tournament appearances.

“It’s a battle out there,” English said. “I had a tough stretch on 4 ... I had a tough go on 16. But you’ve got to grind.”

The 68 by Holmes, Carlos Ortiz and defending champion Scott Stallings, who was three shots behind, was the low score in the third round.

“Guys are getting bunched,” Walker said.

“You’ve got par 5s that are tough, and a lot of them are unreachable.”

Walker did his part.

Standing in the 18th fairway, 261 yards from the hole and a slight breeze in his face, he decided at the last minute to go up one club with a 3-wood, choked up slightly and hit a cut. It wound up about 12 feet by the hole, and his eagle putt to share the lead touched the right side of the cup. He tapped in for a 70.

Holmes is on the A-list of power players, and while his length helped, his short game led to birdies.

He got up-and-down from a bunker on No. 6, reached the greenside bunker in two shots on the 603-yard 13th hole and had to lay up on the 18th after driving into the rough. He holed a 12-footer for birdie.

He was tied for the lead until pulling his tee shot into a hazard left of the 17th fairway, and then putting the next shot into a bunker. But he got upand-down to escape with bogey and had a share of the lead when English made his late bogey.

“This golf course is a big, ball-striking course,” Holmes said. “So you’ve got to hit it in the fairway, you’ve got to hit some good shots and give yourself a chance for some birdies. ... The rough, it probably plays worse than it did at the U.S. Open when they had it

here in 2008.”

Lucas Glover, emerging from a tough stretch of poor putting, had a 70 and will be in the final group with Holmes and English, a close friend.

No shot was more memorable for Chad Campbell than his hole-in-one on the picturesque third hole with a pitching wedge.

He played well the other 17 holes for a 70 and is in the hunt for his first victory in more than seven years.

Others at 8-under 208 were Spencer Levin (70) and Nick Watney, who made all pars on the back

nine for a 72.

Day, at No. 8 in the world the only player from the top 10 to make cut, holed out on the 17th for eagle to salvage a mediocre day and shot 71.

He was only two shots behind.

English, a two-time winner on tour, figured anything under par on Sunday might be good enough to win.

Or maybe not. He later said anyone within five shots of the lead could not be counted out in the final round at Torrey Pines. If that’s the case, 31 players are still in the picture.

‘Magician’s Lie’ weaves mesmerizing tale

So you might be a little gullible.

You know when some-

one’s fibbing – more or less.

But the one thing you’ll know for sure when you read this book is that you’ve got a winner in your hands.

Set around the turn of the last century, “The Magician’s Lie” proves, like any good stage show, that our brains can easily deceive us: never mind the characters, we readers don’t truly know if Arden is spinning a fable or giving an alibi.

I’m still reeling from the possibilities myself, because author Greer Macallister’s conjured up the kind of novel that pulls readers in, shakes us up, and leaves us feeling sawed in two.

That, and the lingering sense of having just been happily duped, makes this one very satisfying novel and you know you want it. Go now, find “The Magician’s Lie,” and watch your time disappear.

Amid ‘Mockingbird’ sequel buzz, worries about Lee’s wishes

MONROEVILLE, Ala. — Hometown friends and fans of “To Kill A Mockingbird” author Harper Lee are struggling to reconcile a publisher’s sensational announcement — that her decades-old manuscript for a sequel had been rediscovered and will be released — with the image of the elderly writer at her sister’s recent funeral.

Grieving, ill and seated in a wheelchair, Lee talked loudly to herself at awkward times during the service for her beloved older sister and attorney, Alice, according to two family friends who attended the November service.

Lee mumbled in a manner that shocked some in attendance, said one of the friends.

Both spoke on condition that they not be identified — one for fear of upsetting those handling the author’s affairs, the other not wanting to upset the family.

That scene seemed at odds with Tuesday’s announcement by an arm of HarperCollins Publishers that included an eloquent

statement attributed to Lee, 88, who spends her days in an assisted living center not far from where she grew up in this south Alabama town, the inspiration for “Mockingbird.”

The publisher said Tonja Carter, an attorney who practiced with Alice Lee, found an unpublished manuscript titled “Go Set a Watchman,” and that it will be released in July as a sequel to the beloved novel.

“I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years,” Lee was quoted as saying.

Townspeople say it is common knowledge that Lee is deaf, blind and in poor health — she had a stroke some years ago.

But publisher Jonathan Burnham said in a telephone interview Tuesday that he was “completely confident” she was fully involved in the decision to release the book.

He acknowledged, though, that he had had no direct contact with Lee regarding the new book and had last seen her years ago, for a celebration of her 80th birthday.

“There will inevitably be speculation regarding Harper Lee as she has lived a very private life,” he said. “She was genuinely surprised at the discovery of the manuscript but delighted by the suggestion to publish what she considers to be the ‘parent’ to ‘Mockingbird.’ I met with her last autumn and again over two days in January; she was in great spirits and increasingly excited at the prospect of this novel finally seeing the light of day.”

lishing consultant and longtime member of the publishing industry who was formerly a literary agent, described Nurnberg as “a very well respected agent internationally.” Silverberg said he was “honest, candid, sharp” and a “trusted colleague.”

Questions about Lee’s involvement did not stop the public from preordering the book. As of Wednesday evening, “Watchman was No. 1 on Amazon.com, more than five months before its official release. “To Kill a Mockingbird” ranked No. 2.

Mary McDonagh Murphy, author of the 2010 book, “Scout, Atticus & Boo: A Celebration of 50 Years of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’” said she did not doubt that Lee was capa-

ble of making the decision to publish the new book.

“I haven’t spoken to Miss Lee directly about this. And not many people have, except for her agent and lawyer,” Murphy said. “But I did meet her two and a half years ago at a writer’s conference, and she was in great humor.

And sharp and very much in the spirit of the event.

So I don’t question her ability make a judgment about this.”

In Monroeville, where locals have long welcomed “Mockingbird” tourists while helping Harper Lee maintain her privacy, the news struck many as contradictory to Lee’s oft-cited wishes to be left alone and to leave “Mockingbird” as her lone literary achievement.

Carter, who practiced law with Alice Lee for years in an office near the courthouse that became

a model for the movie based on “Mockingbird,” was not available to answer questions about the new book and Harper Lee’s health.

Carter’s legal assistant said Wednesday she is declining all interview requests, and Carter did not reply to an email message.

Therrell said he quit taking soup to the sisters a couple of years ago after receiving a note from Carter asking him to stay away because of the poor condition of the author, who he knows by her first name of Nelle.

“The gist of it was that due to her condition, they were restricting visits to her very closest friends,” said Therrell.

Thomas Lane Butts, a retired United Methodist pastor who was close to the Lee sisters for years, had doubts after seeing her at the funeral that Harper Lee was capable of assisting with the dispersal of Alice Lee’s estate of books, clothes and personal items.

“I imagine it will fall to (other members of) the family to take care of the items,” he said in an interview last month.

Wild hogs damage trees, levees, farm crops throughout state

VICKSBURG — Perhaps the biggest threat to Mississippi tromps around on four legs and wallows in the mud.

It is a powerful, intelligent and seemingly indestructible beast that left unbridled could ruin the Magnolia State’s agricultural and hunting economy.

Wild hogs are rooting up crops, chomping down trees, destroying levees, and spreading disease as they reproduce at an alarming rate, Cliff Covington, Mississippi State University Extension Service Wildlife Specialist, told the Warren County Forestry Association during its recent annual meeting.

“If it’s a longleaf pine seedling in the pasture, that’s what they’re going to eat. If it’s a baby fawn or calf, that’s what they’ll eat. They’re like a goat on steroids. They will literally eat anything,” said Covington.

From the Gulf Coast to the Tennessee state line, wild hogs cause millions of dollars in damage each year, and nationally they are blamed for $1.5 billion in damages annually, he said.

The state is doing everything it can to eradicate the nuisance animals — even resorting to shooting them with highpowered automatic rifles mounted on helicopters.

Yet, little seems to be working to slow the damage from the swine that are swallowing up the South.

Trapping, Covington said, is the most efficient way of disposing of nuisance hogs, but even it isn’t 100 percent reliable.

Jimmy Gouras has trapped 173 hogs on his property in Claiborne County in the past three years, yet the damage is still constant.

“I have planted about 15 acres of corn for the deer and turkeys and expected that a hog would eat a little bit of it. When that corn started making ears, those hogs knocked down every stalk of corn in that field,” Gouras said.

It’s been more than three months since Gouras has trapped a hog, and it looks like the older hogs on his property have gotten wise to his plan.

“I don’t ever see them. I rarely ever see one in the daylight,” he said.

While the boars and sows love to pick through the corn patch, they tend to prefer acorns, he said.

Three years ago, Gouras planted 8,000 hardwood trees, and hogs have eaten nearly every one.

“If I thought I could sell this place and go somewhere else where there’re not hogs, I might consider it. But hogs are everywhere,” he said.

At Tara Wildlife in northern Warren County,

Because of the high consumption rate, AndersonTully officials have asked Covington to investigate the impact feral pigs have on hardwood regeneration. There are 60 to 80 acorns per pound for most oak species, meaning hogs can gobble up as many as 800 potential trees each per day. about a dozen pigs have been trapped since October.

“It’s very limited but we’re probably one of the rare ones around,” said Mark Bowen, sales and marketing director for Tara. “We’re out in the woods so much, they’re not out there for an extended time without us finding out about it.”

If deer begin to die off because of hog overpopulation it could be devastating for the state’s hunting tourism, Murphy said.

A 2006 study by the U.S. Department of the Interior found that hunting, angling and wildlife watching was a $1.2 billion industry for Mississippi.

“They don’t come here to hog hunt. They come here to deer hunt,” Murphy said. “It’s a terrible state problem.”

Deer hunters in Mississippi killed 52,000 pigs in 2011.

Getting rid of wild hogs can seem virtually im-

possible because of how quickly they breed, Covington said.

Pigs produce a large litter two or three times a year and reach reproductive maturity by 6 months old.

Typically four piglets survive into adulthood.

“When they are very little is the only time they have any predators. Once they get up to any size, the only predator that exists is man,” Covington said.

And man can’t keep up.

Tom Lee who runs Hintson Farms on Mississippi Highway 3 between International Paper and the Yazoo County line says he’s killed more than 100 hogs since October.

“We have traps, we hunt them, we thermal image hunt them at night.

We basically hunt them year round trying to control them,” Lee said.

The hogs are after his agricultural products — corn, soybeans and milo.

“They destroy more

than they eat. They knock more plants down than they eat up,” he said.

Killing a pig or two does virtually nothing to control the population.

Even killing half a sounder of pigs makes very little difference, Covington said. At least 70 percent of the population must be killed every year in order to maintain current levels.

“If you have a piece of property that has 100 pigs on it and go in and kill 70 pigs every year for 10 years, you’re still going to have 100 pigs when you get through with it,” Covington said.

Pigs can also survive in almost any climate — swamps, plains, forest — and are prevalent in 46 states and have reached southern Canada where in the winter they burrow into snowdrifts.

With thousands of hogs wallowing around across the state damage to farm and timberland is astounding.

In 2011, pigs also caused hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to the state’s levee system during the historic Mississippi River Flood.

“People don’t understand the economic impact they’re causing because of their rooting around and the erosion in the hills,” Lee said.

A wild pig will eat about 10 pounds of food — meat and vegetation

— each day, Covington said. That’s about a third to twice as much as white tail deer, according to the North American White Tail Association.

Ten pounds might not seem like much, Covington said, but it can be a field of freshly sewn corn or more pine seedlings than a forester can plant in a day.

“They can eat up to 1,000 longleaf pine seedlings per day,” he said.

Because of the high consumption rate, AndersonTully officials have asked Covington to investigate the impact feral pigs have on hardwood regeneration.

Some farmers in the South Delta have resorted to surrounding their crops with electric fences in an attempt to keeps pigs out.

It doesn’t always work.

For Gouras, a perfect poison seems to be the only solution.

“I don’t think you’ll ever control them with a rifle. I don’t think we’ll ever control them period until they come up with something specific to hogs to eradicate them.

There aren’t enough guns out there to get rid of these hogs or to make a dent in the population,” Gouras said.
