City opposes elected school board idea BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth Board of Aldermen is formally stating its opposition to the possibility of all school boards in Mississippi being elected. The Senate Education Committee passed Senate Bill 2141, which calls for all school board members to be elected, in a

split voice vote on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported. The Corinth School District Board of Trustees is a five-member board appointed by the Board of Aldermen to five-year terms. In a special meeting Thursday afternoon, aldermen adopted a resolution opposing the proposed mandate. The resolution will be

sent to the local legislative delegation and other government leaders. “I think we’ve got a system in place that has worked well for 50 years,” said Ward 1 Alderman Andrew Labas. “There is no need to penalize a municipality for something that is obviously working well for us.” The resolution notes the dis-

trict’s record of achievement and argues that a one-size-fitsall approach to school boards is not in the best interest of the state. It also says that electing school board members in the Corinth School District could dilute minority representation because of the requirement to establish districts within the city.

Demand for handgun training is rising for a nearby firearms training center. “We were probably averaging 20 people a month, but now we’re averaging between 75 and 80,” said Mark Woodruff, president of the Tri State Gun and Archery Club. “We went from giving it once a month to twice a month.” Located in Counce, Tenn., the club provides the firearm training that is required to get a concealed carry permit in Tennessee and to obtain an “enhanced” concealed carry permit in Mississippi. The classes are conducted by an all-volunteer group of National Rifile Association certified instructors who follow NRA guidelines. “We offer, basically, a shooting safety course,” explained Woodruff. “We teach you about gun safety in the classroom and take you to the pistol range where you’ll shoot 50 rounds under the supervision of our range officers.” Woodruff estimates that his club has provided training for 3,000 people over the last five years. Tennessee residents must complete the safety course before getting their concealed carry permits through their local driver’s license centers. In Mississippi, the training is only required for people seeking “enhanced” carry permits. After completing the additional training to earn the enhanced sticker on their permit, Mississippians will be allowed to carry concealed firearms in certain locations previously prohibited by law. These places include courthouses, polling places, government meetings, any school, college or professional athletic event, bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, any elementary or secondary school facility, any junior

The postal service is considering a reduction in hours at the Glen Post Office. The Postal Service has sent surveys to residents of the area seeking input and will hold a community meeting at the Glen Town Hall at 6 p.m. on March 11. The possible changes are part of the Postal Service Post Plan affecting the nation’s smallest post offices. The Postal Service is looking at reducing Glen’s window service hours to four hours each weekday. Saturday hours would not change. “The Glen Post Office is currently open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and reopens 1:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.,” said Enola Rice, a regional USPS spokeswoman. “If the decision is made to offer four hours of window service each weekday, it would modify the current hours.” Unless the survey finds that at least 60 percent of residents are interested in a discontinuance study for the Glen Post Office and possibly opening a contractor-operated retail unit, the Postal Service intends to go to the fourhour schedule. The public meeting will provide a forum for questions and additional information about the Post Plan. USPS management will share results of the survey, answer questions and solicit input on the time of day the Glen Post Office will be open. USPS will make a final decision after the public meeting based on all of the community input, according to the information distributed to residents. Replies to the survey are needed by Feb. 25. SB 2141 calls for all school board members to run for four-year terms in the general election beginning with the 2016 presidential election. The races would be nonpartisan. While county school boards are elected, many municipal school boards are not. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Tony Smith (R-Picayune).
