With book in hand, Park Ranger Rachel Winters is ready for the upcoming Civil War book chat.
Park rangers begin history book chat
A Corinth man didn't bite. A caller claiming to be a DIRECTV representative advised Corinth's Ray King his programming was about to be canceled. All King had to do was give the caller his account number and credit card number to keep the programming from expiring. “It sounded real,” said King. A longtime subscriber with DIRECTV, King decided to check further. “I told them I would check on that and hung up the
BY BOBBY J. SMITH What could be a better way to learn about Corinth’s Civil War history than studying the battle with the park rangers who work every day to understand, explain and preserve that history? The rangers at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center are opening the weekly staff book discussion to the public. The staff at the Interpretive Center meets every Thursday in the visitor center for an informal book discussion. The public is invited to join

the Interpretive Center staff as they kick off the reading and discussion of Dr. Timothy B. Smith’s book “Corinth 1862: Siege, Battle, Occupation” — the newest and most indepth study of Corinth’s place in the War Between the States. “In the past the park staff has met in the library in an ongoing project to further our knowledge of the Civil War in Corinth,” explained Park Ranger Tom Parson. “As we are about to begin the chat about Dr. Smith’s book we thought it would be great if our friends in town wanted to come in and
participate.” Plenty of quality, hardbound copies of “Corinth 1862” are available in the Interpretive Center’s bookstore for $39.95. The book is essential for the serious student of Corinth history, Parson said. The Civil War book chat will also give participants a chance to chat with the author. “At some future date in our discussions we will be joined for a moment with the author, who will give us his insights on his work and his upcoming Please see CHAT | 2

phone,” he said. The local man called DIRECTV after hanging up and found that everything was in order with the company. “The woman told me everything was fine and that I didn't owe anything,” he said. The scam is the latest to try and swindle people in the area. “I found they have been doing this all over the county, pretending to be from both DIRECTV and DISH,” said King. “I just want other people to be aware of this.”
The public is getting the opportunity to live on the wild side. When it comes to food. The 28th annual Alcorn County Wildlife Tasting Supper promises the community a night of family fun and all kinds of tasty treats from the wild on Feb. 19 at the Crossroads Arena. “This is a good way to promote wildlife in our area, recognize our hunters and showcase the great cooks,” said Sandy Mitchell with the Alcorn County Soil and Water Conservation District.
The district along with the Mississippi Forestry Commission, Mississippi State Extension Service, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and USDA — Natural Resources Conservation Service combine to coordinate the event. Doors open at 4:45 p.m. with the door fee being one wildlife dish per person. “We want big dishes,” added Mitchell. If no dish is brought, cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12. Kids under 5 will be admitted free. Please see SUPPER | 2
Black artists showcase talents BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Several black artists are bringing positive themes to multiple venues hosting art during Black History Month. The Corinth Library, Alcorn Welcome Center and Corinth Artist Guild Gallery will all host black-themed art during the month. At the library auditorium, the featured artist is Billy Clifton. An opening reception with the Tupelo painter is set for Feb. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m., and the exhibit will continue through March 16.
The exhibit is up for viewing now. Painting in acrylic, Clifton brings a highly stylized realism to scenes that explore history and culture. During a prior showing in Corinth, Clifton told the Daily Corinthian that people should aim to take inspiration from the accomplishments of black men and women throughout the year, not just this particular month. “If we would dig enough … it would motivate us now to want to do some positive things in our
