A law that would extend early voting for Mississippians is getting some attention in the Capitol this week. House Bill 228 would allow noexcuses in-person early voting, starting 14 days before an election. Current law only lets people vote

early if they will be out of town on Election Day. “Anything that helps people vote easier is best,” said Rep. Nick Bain (D-Alcorn). “I think early voting could certainly make it easier for people to vote.” The bill passed the House Elections Committee on Monday and will move to the full House for a vote.

Other voter bills discussed this week include House Bill 373 which would authorize online, first-time voter registration for people with a valid driver’s license. Another bill, House Bill 1054, would create a group to study restoration of voting rights for people

A Broadway performer will join the Corinth Symphony Orchestra to close out the season. People of the Crossroads James Bryant, Corinth “I’ve come up through the ranks,” said Corinth Fire Department Deputy Chief James Bryant. “I was laid off from World Color and was looking for a new job - I had no idea I’d find a job I loved so much.” More than 20 years ago he was just a rookie firefighter and now he’s overseeing day-to-day operaprations from his office at Station 1. “I’m one of those people who love getting up in the morning and coming to work,” said Bryant, who also works as a EMT for Magnolia EMS. Married to Jamie, the couple has four children, Brandy, Heather, Tyler and 12-year-old Lane, who has Cerebral Palsy. “Jamie does a great job taking care of Lane,” added Bryant. “We are blessed ... he’s our miracle.”
