Sheriff awaits results on human remains BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Valuable clues from the state crime lab are not expected to come quickly in the investigation of human remains found in the Kossuth area. While investigators with the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department are doing what they can, there isn’t much to go on until more information is in hand. “We’re reviewing any missing per-

sons that we can,” said Sheriff Ben Caldwell. “But until we can get information on the age, race and sex of the remains, there’s not a whole lot we can do right now.” He does not know when the crime lab will have results of its analysis of the partial human remains, but he does not expect the report to come quickly. Caldwell said an extensive search of the area on County Road 510

turned up nothing. The search included wooded areas and fields in the vicinity of the residence where a dog brought human remains last Wednesday afternoon. A team with cadaver dogs assisted the sheriff’s department. While the remains were identified as human, it could not be determined if the person died naturally or under other circumstances without lab analysis.

“I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.” – excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream Speech” Honoring the life and legacy of Baptist minister and Civil Rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church will host their annual Dr. MLK Commu- King Jr. nity Program at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15. The timely event will take place on the visionary’s birthday. Had he lived, Dr. King would be celebrating his 88th year on earth. Organizers have chosen “Dream Bigger, Dream Better” as this year’s theme. “Each year we strive to make sure the program presents a positive message in the community, that the program is entertaining and that the youth and adults in the surrounding communities are involved,” said Rebecca Spence, who is directing the program. “The positive message this year is the recognition of our teachers and other professionals in education for inspiring our children not only to dream, but to dream bigger and better.” In keeping with the inspirational theme, The

Living Free Ministries are counting their blessings for a wonderful 2016. Director Tommy Wilson said the year was a busy one at Corinth’s nonresidential faith-based addiction recovery program. “With the help of so many in the community, we were able to serve over 12,000 meals this year – 1,000 on Christmas Day alone,” said Wilson. “We also met with over 250 people a week and helped over 75 men and women go to residential programs.” Wilson said he also saw many give
