Jury scam targets residents BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Basket fund tops $18,200 The spirit of giving the holiday season is alive and well in the Alcorn County area. Donations are still needed this year for the 19th Annual Corinth Rotary Club/Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund. A $25,000 fund raising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets could be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 6. Baskets were given away based upon faith the goal will be reached. So far, $18,204 has been raised, meaning $6,796 still needs to be raised to make the goal. The deadline to give has been extended to Friday, Jan. 16 Recent donations include $40 anonymous gift in memory of Rivers Stroup and Laura Strickland; and $50 from Billy and Patricia Newcomb in memory of Jeff Newcomb. Contributions to the Christmas Basket Fund can be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a special person or persons. The tribute will be published in the Daily Corinthian. Donations can be brought by the newspaper office 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or mailed to: Daily Corinthian, Attn.: Christmas Basket Fund, P.O. Box 1800, Corinth, MS 38835.
Residents across the state are being warned of a new phone scam by the Better Business Bureau. According to reports, the number shows up on caller ID’s as a local number, even though the caller is probably in another country. The caller tells the resident that they
missed jury duty and the judge has issued a warrant for their arrest for failure to appear. Residents are told they owe $400 in fines and if they don’t pay, deputies would be sent to arrest them. The caller offers a way to take care of the fine by purchasing a Green Dot MoneyPak Card. The resident is told to put $400 on the card,
then call back the phone number provided within an hour to pay the fines. Callers have normally identified themselves as a representatives of a local sheriff’s office or police department. “Alcorn County residents will never get a phone call for jury duty, for any reason,” said Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell. “We mail post cards informing
people of jury duty — phone calls are never made.” Mississippi BBB CEO John O’Hara said this is the type of scam that moves from one area to another quickly. “It has been reported mostly in the Madison County and Ridgeland areas,” he said. “If a person receives a similar Please see SCAM | 2
