High tide Tennessee River rages, overflows its banks

PICKWICK, Tenn. — It was an oceanic scene as visitors and residents alike turned out for an afternoon of selfies and sightseeing on New Year’s Day as the Tennessee River overflowed its banks below Pickwick Landing Dam. Bundled up with cameras and smart phones in tow, groups and individuals could be seen snapping photos, jogging, fishing and walking their canine companions despite the chill.

The backdrop was historic, raging tides and the highest water level the river has seen in 11 years.

Describing the view as more Atlantic than Tennessean, Joey and Susie Holt of Iuka braved the frigid weather and cold winds to witness the flooding first-hand. Like the other nine TVA dams on the Tennessee River, all of Pickwick’s gates were open.

“I spend a lot of time fishing in and around the Pickwick area and this is the highest I’ve ever seen it,” said Joey. “I didn’t see any snakes when the temperatures were so warm this past week, but I’ve seen a bunch of wasps and bees.”

Watching as the waves pounded the rocks, a shivering Susie compared the sight before her eyes as reminiscent of a day of salt and sand.

“It’ll about make you seasick,” she said.

Passing through the area on their way to celebrate a belated Christmas with their son in Chattanooga, Tenn., Pam and Mike Fawcett of Bolivar, Tenn., decided to pay a special visit to the area and see the flooded river first-hand.

“I’ve been seeing all these pictures and videos on Facebook and television, but it’s hard to judge without seeing it yourself,” said Pam as she stood in awe of the tumultuous Tennessee River below the dam. “With such big waves, you really have to see it in order to believe it.

Botel Lane was divided by flood waters and the Historic Botel itself surrounded by tides as levels reached almost to the swimming pool.

RVs and temporary dwellings were pushed back as residents and campers sought higher ground and dry land.

A floating mail box, surrounded gazebo and flooded garage were just some of the oddities to witness.

Counting herself and her business lucky despite the week’s events, the Historic Botel’s CoOwner Lindsay Boyd said she is thankful that flood waters never got inside the Botel.

“The waters began rising on Christmas Day and we started moving campers from the river bottom at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night. By Sunday morning, we were preparing for the worst,” she said. “Once Tuesday rolled around, we began the process of rescuing cats, dogs and even chickens that had been stranded in and around the waters. We won’t know the true extent of the damage until the waters recede, but we are very thankful that there were no fatalities or injuries due to the weather.”

“We are also very grateful to our community which rallied together to help out in any way they could. Everyone who had a boat was willing to pitch in and help rescue the animals which were trapped.

One man’s dog ran off as he was trying to relocate his shelter and was later discovered surrounded by water on a deck this past Wednesday,” she added.

“We are just amazed by all of this and are taking it day by day.”

In addition to covered lawn furniture and other outdoor decor, locals made the unfortunate discoveries of rodents and dead ducks and fish.

“I never saw a snake, but know that people have,” said Boyd. “Hopefully, this water will subside soon and we can maybe have a clean-up party.”

While the inside of the Botel remains dry, mother nature put a damper of their festivities.

“Due to our flooded campgrounds, RV park and parking areas, we were forced to cancel our New Year’s Eve celebration and I was so looking forward to dancing the night away,” said Boyd’s disappointed mother and co-owner of the Historic Botel, Linda Quick. “It’s funny how things work out. We had the limo out for designated driving and all our rooms were rented, but Mother Nature had other ideas.

When you live on the river, you have to live by the

river and we just have to roll with it.”

Looking forward to the Botel’s upcoming Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day events, Quick has turned her attention to other things knowing the cancellation was for the best.

“We are very appreciative for Johnny Bellis whose father Bill Bellis’ vision brought the barge to land,” she said. “He provided us with a heads up by sending me a text to let us know that if the water reached 390 feet, it would be in the bottom of the Botel house.”

The waters almost reached that level as TVA reported that the 383-foot-crest was just five feet shy of the level which marks a major flood stage. This 383 feet level is the highest the Tennessee River has reached in Savannah since December of 2004.

Preparing for the worst case scenario, Quick used her knowledge of hurricanes to safeguard her business.

“I went out and purchased a ton of overnight absorbent baby diapers to put against the doors since they hold more water than towels or other items,” she said. “So, if you go to town in search of them and can’t find any, you will know it’s because I got them all!

Also, I have been telling everyone that should they happen to see one of the Botel’s wooden picnic tables floating by, we would appreciate it if they would would scoop it up and bring it back!”

Echoing her daughters sentiments, Linda also wished to thank her neighbors.

“We couldn’t have done it without our friends and have no doubt that we will soon see them rolling up their sleeves and putting on rubber boots once everything dries up a bit,” she said. “I decided to retire here because of the people. It is a wonderful place to live.”

Making the most of a bad situation, the Pickwick resident is choosing to glimpse the silver-lining of the experience.

“The waves come rushing in and it looks like the ocean,” she said. “Rather than complain about it, you just deal with it. Have a cup of coffee and savor the view. Like sitting on the beach near the sea, it just gives you a gentleness and a sense of calm like nothing else.”

The Tennessee River watershed has received nearly twice the amount of rain the area would normally get in December. The river crested Wednesday or Thursday and by Friday flood levels were dropping.

Many of the homes along the river below the dam were surrounded by water.

While 2015 ended with a splash, Pickwick residents are hopeful that the New Year will bring calmer tides.

Prentiss to swear in officials Monday BOONEVILLE — Prentiss County residents can celebrate the start of a new term of office for county officials during a ceremony and reception set for next Monday.

Officials elected in the 2015 county elections will be sworn in on Monday, Jan. 4 in a ceremony set for 9 a.m. in the main courtroom at the Prentiss County Courthouse. The new terms will run from 2016-2020.

No new county officials were elected in 2015 except for Tax Assessor Bob Maddox who succeeded former assessor Steve Eaton who

did not seek reelection.

Maddox took office early in October when Eaton stepped down prior to the end of his term.

Officials to be sworn in during Monday’s ceremony include: Chancery Clerk David “Bubba” Pounds, Circuit Clerk Mike Kelley, Coroner Greg Sparks, County Attorney Allison A. Worley, Sheriff Randy M. On Jan. 1, no one under the age of 18 will be allowed to buy cough syrup containing dextromethorphan. There has been research that show one out of 10 teenagers have used the ingredient to get high.

There will be no more of Tennessee’s inheritance tax beginning Jan. 1. The tax was anywhere from 5.5 to 9.5 percent of the estate left behind.

The Beacon Center of Tennessee fought the inheritance tax for years as an unfair double tax.

Tennessee will now have an animal abusers state registry that will be started that would be similar to the sex offender registry. Offenders will go off the animal abusers registry if they go two years after their conviction without another crime.

New year brings new Tupelo band director laws for Tennessee resigns after arrest SELMER, Tenn. — The new year will mean a group of new laws will become official on Jan. 1.

Tennessee drivers will have to renew their licenses only eight years instead of the formally required five years.

A seat belt law will now see fines be raised from $10 to $25 for anyone caught not wearing their seat belts. A repeat offender will see the fine increase from $20 to $50.

Tennessee drivers that choose to drive with liability insurance may be fined before they get in a wreck. County Clerks will now confirm a driver’s insurance before they are allowed to purchase their tag. Ten-

TUPELO (AP) – A high school band director in Tupelo has resigned following his arrest on a drug charge.

Tim Matlock had been arrested on Dec. 21 for possession of crystal methamphetamine.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that Matlock, who has not publicly commented on the arrest, resigned Wednesday.

He was arrested during a traffic stop in Union County and, according to online records, bonded out of the Union County Jail on Dec. 22.

The school district will start advertising for a new band director for Tupelo High School within

the next week through media outlets and the Mississippi Department of Education.

Teen attacked kids, killed 1, police say MEMPHIS — Police say a 14-year-old boy attacked three children, one of whom died, and has been charged with attempted murder and child abuse.

Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said Wednesday that the teenager assaulted two girls, ages 6 and 9, and a 7-year-old boy in a home Dec. 23.

Rudolph said the teenager had been caring for the children while their foster mother was working. It’s not clear why he attacked them.

The children were taken to a hospital. Police said the 6-year-old girl died Sunday, and the other two were released to the care of the Department of Children’s Services. Police said the girl who died had a swollen and bruised face, but the cause of death has not been determined.

The teenager is being charged as a juvenile.

Weather hampering police building work TUPELO (AP) – Bad weather has been hampering work on the Tupe-

lo Police Department’s new headquarters.

The same storms that brought weeks of rain to the area have also created delays in completing the $10 million, 34,000-square-foot building.

West Brothers Construction project supervisor Jim Shackelford tells The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that rain has delayed work on masonry, roofing and bricking. He said inside work is progressing.

Openings have been temporarily covered with plastic to reduce the effect of weather on the interior.

The city broke ground on the project in April.

Inside the building, workers are installing the metal stud walls as well as ducting for the mechanical systems.

Additional crews are working on the electrical and plumbing systems.

As many as 60 workers from different crews could be working on the site each day as the pace of construction picks up.

The first 10 weeks of the project were dedicated to giving the two-story building a stable foundation. In mid-June, the concrete pillars began to rise from the ground, and anyone driving past the site could see rapid changes. By July, crews started pouring the concrete floors, starting during the early morning hours to avoid the heat of the Mississippi summer. By the end of October, the second floor and concrete roof had been poured, along with the small third floor in the center of the building that will house the heating and cooling system and other mechanical systems.

A Medal of Honor recipient who lost an eye while taking a grenade blast to save a fellow Marine now faces a hitand-run charge in South Carolina, police say.

Retired Cpl. Kyle Carpenter, 26, turned himself in and appeared in court Thursday with an attorney on misdemeanor charges of hit-and-run and making an improper left turn, police said in a news release. Carpenter was released on bond, the release said.

Police say a pedestrian who was struck shortly after 8:30 p.m. Dec. 8 was treated at the scene for scrapes and leg injury. The pedestrian, Michael Haddad, declined to be taken to a hospital and is expected to make a

Surveillance tapes showed that a pedestrian was struck in a crosswalk as he walked to the fitness center at the University of South Carolina, police said. After the pedestrian was struck, the driver pulled over and turned on his hazard lights, but didn’t leave his vehicle to exchange information or offer help, police said.

The driver left the scene after the pedestrian stood up and walked to the side of the road.

The pedestrian then went

inside the fitness center and police were called.

Carpenter, who’s now studying at USC, and Haddad have cooperated and there’s no evidence that either was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time, police said.

Attorney Butch Bowers, who represents Carpenter, said in an email that Carpenter believed the pedestrian hadn’t been injured based on his “reaction and his ability to continue walking across the street, apparently without difficulty.”

Once he learned the pedestrian was injured, Carpenter has cooperated with police and taken responsibility for the accident, Bowers said.

“Kyle is grateful that no one was seriously injured, and he applauds the police for their professionalism.”

Bowers said. “Kyle looks forward to continuing his education at USC and working with young people to make sure they stand up for what is right and take responsibility for their actions, just as he has done in this instance.”

Carpenter received the Medal of Honor in June 2014 for his actions as a Marine in Afghanistan in 2010, when he lost an eye. He required almost 40 surgeries and multiple skin grafts, leaving him with a prosthetic eye and a new jaw and teeth,

President Barack Obama said at the Medal of Honor ceremony.

Carpenter lived during his younger years in Alcorn County and still has family in the area. He grew up in Hardin County and officials there had a huge ceremony to hon or him last year.

He had placed himself between a grenade and Lance Cpl. Nicholas Eufrazio, who received a head injury from shrapnel. Carpenter was severely wounded from head to toe, sustaining a depressed skull and a collapsed right lung, among a long list of other injuries.

He was evacuated and required brain surgery to remove shrapnel. His heart flat-lined three times during treatment, Obama said, and doctors managed to revive him each time.

PSC will make headlines in ’16 OXFORD — Setting aside the few years Mississippi turned its membership card, a pretty significant birthday is upcoming.

On Dec. 10, 1817, President James Monroe signed the papers admitting us as the 20th state. That means we’ll turn 199 in 2016.

By the way, conservatism is nothing new in these parts.

When 48 gents met in Washington (the one just north of Charlie Natchez, not the one on the Mitchell Potomac) in July 1817 to write a constitution (required for Columnist membership in the United States), the document said only white men could vote and only if they owned property or were members of the state militia.

But times changed. We moved on. What else is ahead in 2016?

The Legislature convenes at noon on Jan. 5 for an extended session. “Normal” sessions are 90 days, but 30 days are added when a governor starts a new term. The extension predates the change to governors being able to serve two terms, so even though Gov. Phil Bryant is not new in office, lawmakers may meet for 120 days, if they want to.

A difference at the federal level, of course, is that the president is a Democrat, while Bryant is a Republican’s Republican. In some states that have become dominated by the Grand Old Party there have been drastic changes. We’ll soon know if such a blueprint exists for Mississippi.

As for the hot-button issue of the state flag, it’s not as hot button as it was. House Speaker Philip Gunn and Gov. Bryant took opposite positions on the banner earlier this year.

Also, most state universities, many towns and counties decline to display it — but as was true in 2001 when a non-binding state referendum was held, most workaday folks are indifferent.

The more pressing issue for the Legislature — as is true every year — will be how to slice the revenue pie. Campaign commercials notwithstanding, Mississippi’s economy lags the rest of the nation and the revenue estimate for this year has already been reduced.

Look for Bryant and Company to devote a lot of time and attention to job creation and job retention. It’s not headline stuff, as a rule, but it is crucial.

There will be headlines from the Public Service Commission.

Long an isolated populist Democrat on the three-member regulatory panel, Brandon Presley will be joined by former state Rep. Cecil Brown, also a Democrat. Presley will likely chair the agency that holds sway over most private utilities selling electricity, water, sewer, phone and other services. The PSC isn’t as powerful as it once was, but Presley, Brown and newly elected Republican Sam Britton could rankle a lot utility managers, especially as regards the much-litigated $6.4 billion Mississippi Power Company generating plant in Kemper County.

A big change is that Presley is an ardent believer in open government — meaning a lot of companies, large and small, are going to be required to operate in more sunshine than they may prefer.

The new year is also a presidential election year, of course. Mississippi, again, is not “in play.” It is a foregone conclusion that the Republican nominee, regardless of who emerges, will win the state’s electoral votes. That’s bad news for media companies in Mississippi, given that campaigns will be spending billions on ads – just not in Mississippi. It’s good news for state TV viewers who won’t get the same deluge as viewers in Iowa, Florida or any other swing state.

In the larger world, it’s safe to predict that sanity will continue to struggle with insanity.

The chaos emanating from Isis will include more atrocities, more suffering.

A lot of politicians will continue to focus on blaming each other for the rise of this evil ideology. A wise course for us all would be to ignore the finger-pointers and listen to those who propose specific, realistic plans to end the terror.

No year has been all roses; none have been all thorns. Let’s hope for the best in 2016, and work to avoid the worst.

Is the conflict with Islam irreconcilable?

“I worry greatly that the rhetoric coming from the Republicans, particularly Donald Trump, is sending a message to Muslims here .. and ... around the world, that there is a ‘clash of civilizations.’”

So said Pat Hillary ClinBuchanan ton in Saturday night’s Columnist New Hampshire debate.

Yet, that phrase was not popularized by Donald Trump, but by Harvard’s famed Samuel Huntington.

His “The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order” has been described by Zbigniew Brzezinski as providing “quintessential insights necessary for a broad understanding of world affairs in our time.”

Another attack on Trump, more veiled, came Monday in an “open letter” in The Washington Post where four dozen religious leaders, led by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, charge “some politicians, candidates and commentators” with failing to follow Thomas Jefferson’s dictum: “I never will, by any word or act ... admit a right of inquiry into the religious opinions of others.”

Intending no disrespect

to Jefferson, if you do not inquire “into the religious opinions of others” in this world, it can get you killed.

Did the worst attack on the United States since Pearl Harbor, 9/11, have nothing to do with the Islamic faith?

Did Fort Hood and the San Bernardino massacres, the London subway bombings and the killings at Charlie Hebdo, as well as the slaughter at the Bataclan in Paris, have nothing to do with Islam?

Does the lengthening list of atrocities by terrorist cells of ISIS, Boko Haram, al-Qaida, al-Shabaab and the Nusra Front have nothing to do with Islam? Is it really illiberal to inquire “into the religious opinions” of those who perpetrate these atrocities? Or is it suicidal not to?

There has arisen a legitimate question as to whether Islamism can coexist peacefully with, or within, a postChristian secular West.

As of 1960, the Great Wave of immigration into the United States from Southern and Eastern Europe had been halted for 35 years.

And the children of these millions had been largely assimilated and Americanized.

Yet, 50 years after the Turkish gastarbeiters were brought in the millions into Germany, and Algerians

and other North Africans were brought into France, no such wholesale assimilation had taken place.

Set aside faith-based terrorism and Islamist terrorism, and consider the nations and regimes of the Middle and Near East.

Iran holds presidential elections every four years, but is a Shiite theocracy where the Ayatollah is a virtual dictator. Saudi Arabia is a Sunni kingdom and home to Wahhabism, a Sunni form of puritanism.

Those ruling regimes are rooted in Islam.

And while secular America embraces expressions of religious pluralism and sexual freedom, homosexuality and apostasy are often viewed as capital crimes in Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Where Islam is the ruling faith, the Quran is secular law.

Catholic historian Hilaire Belloc saw our future on its way, even before World War II: “[I]n the contrast between our religious chaos and the religious certitude still strong throughout the Mohammedan world ... lies our peril.”

Historically, Christianity came to dominate the Roman Empire through preaching, teaching, example and martyrdom.

Islam used the sword to

conquer the Middle and Near East, North Africa and Spain in a single century, until stopped at Poitiers by Charles Martel.

And this is today’s crucial distinction: Islam is not simply a religion of 1.6 billion people, it is also a political ideology for ruling nations and, one day, the world.

To the True Believer, Islam is ultimately to be imposed on all of mankind, which is to be ruled by the prescriptions of the Quran.

And where Muslims achieve a majority, Christianity is, at best, tolerated.

Nor is this position illogical. For, if there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet, all other religions are false and none can lead to salvation. Why should false, heretical and ruinous faiths not be suppressed?

Behind the reluctance of Trump and other Americans to send another U.S. army into a region that has seen wars in Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan leave us with ashes in our mouths, lies a wisdom born of painful experience.

their posterity, seem to be disappearing.

Many Americans are angry that politicians of both parties seem to have placed their careers ahead of their responsibility to take care of the nation. As Ronald Reagan said, we are just one generation away from losing it all. That’s because democracy and equal rights are not the norm in the world. They must be fought for and maintained if we wish to pass them on to our descendants.

Yes, we want immigrants to come to America, but we want them to come respecting our laws (otherwise what are laws for?), to learn English, our history and values and to become — as earlier immigrants did — fully American without hyphens.

Many who are native-born want today’s immigrants to leave behind ideologies and agendas that do not promote the general welfare.

Earlier immigrants and the native-born have invested in America through taxes, blood and sacrificed lives.

New immigrants will benefit from those investments and sacrifices and should

respect them enough to make investments of their own to preserve what they admire and what has drawn them here.

Two forces are at work, undermining our foundations. One is apathy and the other is a determined assault on the beliefs, traditions, practices and faith that once characterized America. Either one causes harm enough, but when both are in play, we become like a boxer who is pummeled unconscious by a relentless opponent.

Fear can be a factor that motivates to action, or it can cause one to retreat.

It seems the people who embrace and practice our historic beliefs and traditions are in retreat, fearful of being called names by the forces of political correctness. “Racist,” “bigot” and “intolerant” are three words that cause many to cower, in part because of their inability to disprove a negative.

The most effective response to people operating this cultural and political wrecking ball is to turn the tables. Whose values and beliefs have worked in the

past to improve the lot of the people, and whose have failed? Traditionalists don’t have to play defense. They have only to remind Americans of the mess the secular progressives have made.

Having been handed by the “greatest generation” a nation with numerous opportunities and a bright future, the baby boomers and their progeny set about destroying it on the altar of selfindulgence.

There is barely enough time to begin repairing the damage. The 2016 election is only part of the process.

“We the people” remains the most powerful force among us. If our citizens don’t pay attention to what is happening, future generations will rightly condemn us.

Fear of losing what we have should motivate traditionalists to begin fighting back against an anti-American tide that is undermining truths once considered self-evident. But they must first win the argument before winning the next election.

Deaths Berlean Crum Mathis

A memorial service for Berlean Crum Mathis, 90, will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at Memorial Funeral Home with The Rev. Larry McDonald officiating.

Burial will be in the Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Mathis passed away on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, at Magnolia Regional Health Center. She was born on Jan. 7, 1925, to the late Mark and Mary Phillips Crum. She was of the Pentecostal faith; she was a factory worker and housewife. At the time of her death Mrs. Mathis was the oldest living charter member of Calvary Apostolic Church.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Mathis; brothers, Clebert, Troy, and Leon Crum; and a sister, Veneice Crum Studdards.

Mrs. Mathis is survived by her two special nephews, Kenny Marlar (Margie), Roger Marlar (Jimmie); a special niece, Marilyn Sue Roberts; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will begin this afternoon starting at 4 p.m. until service time.

Scotty Duane Bumpas

Funeral services for Scotty Duane Bumpas, 57, of Memphis are set for 1 p.m. today at Magnolia Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with burial in Forrest Memorial park Cemetery.

Mr. Bumpas died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, at Methodist Hospital Germantown.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Donnie R. Williams of Iuka; two daughters, Vickie Wimberly (Keith) and Kim Borden (Galelus), all of Iuka; one brother, Max White of Oxford; two sisters, Tillie House of Oxford, and Sarah Hollingsworth of White Plains, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Megan Bullard, Kyle Hunter Wimberly (Joscelyn), Zack Bullard, Keifer Wimberly (Chelsea), Madison Borden, Molly Borden, and Isaiah Wimberly; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Tina Bullard.

Mental health deal breaks down on enforcement

JACKSON — Talks over a deal to improve mental health care for children broke down largely because the state didn’t want a federal judge to oversee its implementation.

That’s according to a transcript of what lawyers for Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood and the U.S. Justice Department told U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate.

The 2010 lawsuit by the Southern Poverty Law Center claims Mississippi illegally sends mentally

ill children to institutions instead of caring for them at home, violating the Medicaid Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Federal officials got involved, issuing a report four years ago accusing the state of widespread violations.

However, the federal government has never joined the suit or filed its own.

The transcript, obtained by The Associated Press, shows lawyers told Wingate on Dec. 17 that an agreement had largely been reached, but that talks foundered on court oversight. The state wants

a private settlement, which means the plaintiffs could have to sue again if they’re unhappy with Mississippi’s remedies.

“Children in the state have been waiting for far too long for services in the community and are currently in institutions unnecessarily as a result,” said Justice Department lawyer Deena Fox, explaining to Wingate why the department doesn’t think further settlement negotiations are fruitful.

Harold Pizzetta, the lawyer handling the case for the state, blamed the

breakdown on the Justice Department. He said Hood sent a settlement offer to Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, and Gupta rejected it, declaring an impasse.

“They walked away from the table, not us,” Pizzetta said.

Hood has said repeatedly that he wants to settle the lawsuit, and spokeswoman Rachel Ring said Hood still believes that’s likely.

“Negotiations often start and stop many times during the course of liti-

gation,” Ring wrote in an email. “We are confident that negotiations in this matter will resume before any trial occurs.”

Ring did not respond when asked whether the state would implement the changes Hood proposed.

Following an AP request, Hood’s office declined to release the state’s final offer to Gupta. Ring cited a protective order issued by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Parker keeping all documents in settlement talks private.

Parker wrote in his order that the newspaper could ask to have the protective order dissolved when settlement talks ended.

And in another line that typified the show’s ethos, Trapper answers a question with “How should I know? I dropped out of school to become a doctor.”

In recent years he was a regular panelist on the Fox News stock investment show “Cashin’ In.” Rogers is survived by his wife Amy, two children, Bill and Laura, and four grandchildren.

McIntyre was on “M.A.S.H.” from 1972 to 1975, becoming one of many original cast members to leave the wildly popular show that went on until 1983. He was initially considered for Alda’s character, but he preferred Trapper’s sunnier disposition to Hawkeye’s darkly acerbic personality.

The characters were essentially equals when the show began, but it increasingly focused on Alda, which was a factor in Rogers’ departure.

Two other actors played Trapper in other incarnations. Elliot Gould was same character in the “M.A.S.H.” feature film that preceded the TV show, and Pernell Roberts played the title character in the 1980s spinoff drama “Trapper John, M.D.” An Alabama native and Princeton University graduate, Rogers had parts on many short-

LOS ANGELES — Wayne Rogers, whose Trapper John McIntyre alongside Alan Alda’s Hawkeye Pierce brought mischief, martinis and meatball surgery to the masses in the 1970s every week on “M.A.S.H.,” has died.

The actor was surrounded by family when he died Thursday in Los Angeles of complications from pneumonia at age 82, his publicist and longtime friend Rona Menashe told The Associated Press.

Rogers’ army surgeon Trapper John was one of the most beloved characters — and half of one of the most beloved duos — in TV history, despite the actor’s appearing in only the first three of the show’s 11 seasons on CBS. “I loved Wayne. He was smart and funny and curious and dedicated,” Alda said Friday. “On the day we met we promised each other to give MASH everything we had, and that promise bonded us.

Residents pick up pieces after floods ST. LOUIS — The worst of the dangerous, deadly winter flood is over in the St. Louis area, leaving residents of several water-logged communities to spend the first day of 2016 assessing damage, cleaning up and figuring out how to bounce back — or in some cases, where to live.

Farther south, things were getting worse: Record and near-record crest predictions of the Mississippi River and levee breaks threatened homes in rural southern Missouri and Illinois.

Two more levees succumbed Friday, bringing to at least 11 the number of levee failures.

The flood, fueled by more than 10 inches of rain over a three-day period that began last weekend, is blamed for 22 deaths. Searchers were still looking for five missing people — two teenagers in Illinois, two men in Missouri and a country music singer in Oklahoma.

On Friday, water from the Mississippi, Meremec and Missouri rivers was largely receding in the St. Louis area. Two major highways — Interstate 44 and Interstate 55 — reopened south of St. Louis, meaning commuters who return to work next week won’t have hourslong detours.

Some evacuees were allowed to return home.

But in the far southwestern tip of Illinois, the 500 or so people living behind the Len Small levee, which protects the hamlets of Olive Branch, Hodges Park, Unity and rural homes, were urged to move to higher ground after the Mississippi began pouring over the levee.

Alexander County Board Chairman Chalen Tatum said sandbagging efforts were cut off because it was simply too dangerous for the volunteers. Far more water is to come before the Sunday crest. “It’s going to get ugly,� he said.

In St. Mary, Missouri, a town of about 360 residents 50 miles south of St. Louis, neighbors and volunteers placed sandbags around homes after a

small agricultural levee broke. Â

She was 65.

Cole died Thursday evening at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles due to complications from ongoing health issues, her family said in a statement. “Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived ... with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever,� read the statement from her son Robert Yancy and sisters Timolin and Casey Cole. “I had to hold back the tears. I know how hard she fought,� said Aretha Franklin in a statement. “She fought for so long. She was one of the greatest singers of our time.�

Other celebrities honored Cole on social media. In a tweet, actress Marlee Matlin called Cole a lovely songbird and a great actress, writing “she is now singing in heaven.� Patti LaBelle tweeted, “She will be truly missed but her light will shine forever!�

Natalie Cole had battled drug problems and hepatitis that forced her to undergo a kidney transplant in May 2009. Cole’s older sister, Carol “Cookie�

Security concerns don’t deter parade PASADENA, Calif. — The flower-drenched Rose Parade rolled with few hitches Friday under cloudless blue skies to the delight of hundreds of thousands of fans, some of whom camped out all night on sidewalks determined not to let security fears get in the way of their fun.

The temperature at the start of the annual New Year’s Day pageant in Pasadena barely topped 40 degrees but spectators shed layers as the sun lit up dozens of bright floats featuring characters and settings woven with roses, carnations and other flowers.

The theme of this year’s parade, “Find Your Adventure,� was inspired by the centennial of the National Park Service in 2016.

The grand marshal was documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, who produced the Emmy-award winning series, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.�

Burns waved to the crowd with his family from an antique convertible. Earlier, he said he has been a fan of the parade since he was a child, though he had never before attended in person. “I don’t think I’ve ever missed one on television since the early ‘60s,� he told parade organizers.

The 44 floats included an entry paying homage to the City of Hope medical center that was built by and featured athlete cancer survivors.

A losing record didn’t stop the Los Angeles Lakers from entering a float titled “Every Second is an Adventure,� ridden by team legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Paula Abdul, a former member of the Laker Girls dance squad.

The massive Disney entry featured a Star Wars theme complete with stormtroopers on one end and characters from the animated hit “Frozen� on the other.

High water heads toward Tennessee The high water causing problems in Illinois and Missouri is heading south toward Memphis, Tennessee.

The Mississippi River is expected to crest in Memphis at 42 feet Jan. 9. Although no major flooding was expected in the city, officials are moving to protect roads and a local airport.

Meanwhile, other parts of Tennessee and western Kentucky face flood threats as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Tennessee Valley Authority work to control water levels.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for the Cumberland River at Dover, Tennessee, through Monday evening. Â

Arrest made in theft from Salvation Army HATTIESBURG — A man arrested for being in a stolen vehicle in early December now faces charges in connection with the thefts of several Salvation Army kettles in Hattiesburg.

The suspect was arrested in connection with the stolen vehicle on Dec. 13.

Police Lt. Jon Traxler told WDAM-TV that Jones earlier this week was connected to the Dec. 11 break-in at the Salvation Army in Hattiesburg.

Several collection kettles were taken but the amount of money lost has not been disclosed.

The suspect, being held on bond of more than $37,000, was a volunteer at the agency.

He faces charges including commercial burglary and receiving stolen property. Â

Thursday.

The coroner’s office said Robertson was wearing his seatbelt.

The jaws of life were used to pull Robertson out of his vehicle. He died at the scene. Â

Ex-dean will plead guilty in meth case GULFPORT — A former college administrator has notified federal court officials of his intent to plead guilty in a meth distribution case in which his co-defendant faces trial.

The Sun Herald reports Morris Etheredge, former academic dean at Virginia College in Biloxi, will change his plea Jan. 5 in U.S. District Court.

Judge Sul Ozerden set the plea date for Etheredge on Tuesday. He also announced the trial of James Corey Broussard, 35, will start Jan. 19 and is expected to last three days.

The men, both from Gulfport, are accused of buying two pounds of meth in Oakland, California, and trying to bring it with them to Harrison County.

Half the meth allegedly was concealed in a cereal box inside a duffel bag and the other half was in a clear container under the duffel bag when a state trooper stopped their vehicle late Aug. 5.

Their eastbound vehicle was pulled over on Interstate 10 in Hancock County. Â

Man to enter plea in drug conspiracy GULFPORT — A 38-year-old Biloxi man accused in a conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine in Harrison County is set to enter a plea

Monday in U.S. District Court.

The Sun Herald reports the plea hearing for Willie Eugene Russell is scheduled before U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola Jr. Authorities arrested Russell in April shortly after narcotics agents were headed to his home with a search warrant.

Agents seized more than 6 ounces of crack cocaine and $6,000 in suspected drug money.

He was arrested then on state charges of possession with intent to distribute crack and sale of cocaine.

A federal grand jury later indicted him on charges of conspiracy to distribute crack and possession with intent to distribute crack.

Online jail records do not list an attorney for him. Â

Workshop: Creative writing to help teach HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Hattiesburg Arts Council is planning a workshop to help Mississippi teachers use creative writing to augment their core curriculum.

The workshop, set for Monday, is called “Writing the Way.� It will be taught by author Richelle Putnam.

The council’s executive director, Rebekah Stark Johnson, tells the Hattiesburg American that the council has been involved in helping teachers learn how to use the arts with their students for years.

The Arts Council held a workshop popular with teachers last year. It helped instructors learn how to use the Mississippi Blues Trail to teach language arts and math.

Crash on New Year’s Eve kills Saucier man GULFPORT — The Harrison County Coroner’s Office has released new details on a New Year’s Eve accident that killed a 45-year-old Saucier man.

Authorities tell WLOX TV Donald Robertson Jr. died when his car veered off the road, went into a ditch and flipped several times before coming to rest against a utility pole.

The accident happened on Landon Road west of Gulfport just after 6 p.m.

I have done everything from changing preschoolers’ diapers, to tutoring, travel training and teaching life skills to older children.

In the process, I have encountered my share of cooperation, defiance, failure and success.

When speaking with family, friends or strangers about their parenting, I sometimes share my experiences.

This is usually accepted and even encouraged, but occasionally I am put in my place by a parent who feels I must be told that what I’ve done “isn’t the same as being a parent.”

Some even go so far as to imply that I should remain silent, as I have nothing of a parenting nature to offer.

I would think that making everyone feel included would

be more important than official parent status, especially when discussing similar experiences.

So what’s the best way to handle this?

I have no kids of my own; my students are all I have to share stories about.

Should I just dummy up?

McNairy Central sophomore defender Abby Gray has been named to the Jackson Sun’s All-West Tennessee Girls’ Soccer First Team.

The Lady Bobcats had four players named to the honorable mention team.

Gray was selected to the squad as a defender.

The Lady Bobcats selected to the honorable mention team are keeper Holley Moore, Danielle Forsythe, Gabby Forsythe, and Madi Rose Hammock.

NEW ORLEANS — Chad Kelly threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns — three to Laquon Treadwell — and No. 16 Mississippi beat No. 13 Oklahoma State 48-20 in the Sugar Bowl on Friday night.

Ole Miss (10-3) jumped out to a 34-6 lead by halftime, cruising up and down the field against an overwhelmed Oklahoma State defense. The onslaught was punctuated late in the second quarter when left tackle Laremy Tunsil had a 2-yard touchdown run on a trick play after a lateral from Kelly.

Oklahoma State (10-3) lost its final three games after 10

straight wins. The Cowboys fell into a 41-6 hole midway through the third quarter and never mounted a legitimate challenge.

Mason Rudolph was 18 of 31 for 179 yards for Oklahoma State. Ole Miss outgained Oklahoma State 554-366 in total yards.

Ole Miss was embarrassed a year ago in a 42-3 loss to TCU in the Peach Bowl and players vowed throughout the past month that the outcome would be much different.

They were right.

Ole Miss started off a little shaky after a couple early penalties helped Oklahoma State advance down the field. The Cowboys eventually kicked a

short field goal for a 3-0 lead.

That was the end of the good news for the Cowboys, who were playing in the Sugar Bowl for the first time since 1946.

The Rebels’ offense got on track later in the first quarter when Kelly hit a wide open Cody Core for a 31-yard touchdown that made it 10-3 and started the onslaught.

Treadwell added two touchdown catches in the first half and also completed a 45-yard pass after a lateral on a trick play. His second touchdown catch gave Ole Miss a 24-3 lead.

The Ole Miss fans — who were cheering for the Rebels at the Sugar Bowl for the

first time since 1970 — were already in a frenzy when one more trick play by Freeze brought down the house.

With 5 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Kelly ran right and then fired back across his body to the 305-pound Tunsil, who caught the lateral and jogged into the end zone for a 2-yard rushing touchdown.

Ole Miss fans roared and the “S-E-C! S-E-C!” chant started in the Superdome: The Rebels had scored on their final six possessions of the first half and this one was essentially over.

TAMPA, Fla. — The architect of Tennessee’s resurgence won’t be happy until the Volunteers are perennial championship contenders again.

Butch Jones, nevertheless, is proud of the progress the Vols have made in his three seasons as coach and confident the program is on solid footing as it moves into 2016.

Friday’s 45-6 victory over No. 12 Northwestern in the Outback Bowl not only capped Tennessee’s best sea-

son in eight years, but showcased some of the young talent that gives the Vols a chance to keep climbing.

“The road to success is always under construction, and we need to continue to recruit and develop, and continue to grow and elevate our football program,” Jones said. “But where we’ve come in three short years is amazing.”

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida hoped its Citrus Bowl matchup with Michigan would underscore a changing culture under first-year coach Jim McElwain.

The No. 19 Gators left the field acknowledging there is clearly much more work to it.

Michigan’s quarterback Jake Rudock overwhelmed Florida’s defense, throwing for 278 yards and three

touchdowns in the No. 17 Wolverines’ 41-7 victory over Florida on Friday in the Citrus Bowl.

In a game billed a battle of two of the top defenses in the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference, the Wolverines’ offense shined from the outset in their first bowl victory since 2012. Florida suffered its second-worst bowl loss ever and ends the season with three straight losses follow-

ing a regular-season finale setback to Florida State and SEC title game loss to Alabama.

“It was a case of getting your rump kicked in. That’s’ what it was,” Florida coach Jim McElwain said. “They really took it to us on both sides of the ball.”

Michigan (10-3) had three touchdown drives of at least 70 yards and finished with 503 yards of offense against a

Florida defense that entered the game ranked sixth nationally.

Leading by 10 at the half, Michigan scored on each of its first two possessions in the third quarter to take a 31-7 lead.

Clemson, Alabama last teams standing in CFP Associated Press

We’re down to two.

And, boy, they both look impressive.

Top-ranked Clemson and No. 2 Alabama will face off in the desert for the national championship after dominating wins in the College Football Playoff semifinals Thursday. The Tigers romped in the second half for a 37-17 win over No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, followed by an even more dominating performance in which the Crim-

son Tide thumped Michigan State 38-0 in the Cotton Bowl.

The Jan. 11 title game in Glendale, Arizona, matches a high-scoring Clemson offense led by quarterback Deshaun Watson against Nick Saban’s latest dominating defense at Alabama, which limited the Spartans to 239 yards.

There’s another story line to the title game. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is an Alabama alumnus who played on the Tide’s 1992 national championship team.

Now, he’s going against the greatest coach of this generation. Saban has won three national titles in the last six years at Alabama, to go along with a BCS title at LSU. Clemson and Alabama will be playing for the first time since 2008, when Alabama won 34-10 in a game that signaled the Tide’s return to national prominence under Saban.

That was also a pivotal year for the Tigers. Embattled coach Tommy Bowden re-

signed after six games, and Swinney — who was in charge of receivers — took over as head coach. Serving at first on an interim basis, he got the job permanently after leading Clemson to bowl eligibility.

Now, he’s got the Tigers within one win of their first national title since 1981.

“I knew that we would be here,” Swinney said. “It was just a matter of when.”

Dobbs completed 14 of 25 passes. The dualthreat quarterback ran 12 times for 48 yards, including a highlight-reel burst around right end in which he dove for his second TD after picking up a bobbled snap and tight-roping his way up the sideline to make it 31-6 early in the fourth quarter.

Hurd scored on 3-yard run in the third quarter and, despite playing with a sore hamstring, became the first Tennessee player to top 100 yards rushing in two bowl games.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound sophomore ran for 122 yards in the Vols’ victory over Iowa in last year’s Taxslayer Bowl.

The 100-yard performance was the ninth of Hurd’s career, sixth this season.

“I battled a little hamstring pull at the beginning of the week, but I did treatment all week and I put it in my mind that I was going to play either way,” Hurd said.

“There was nothing really that was going to stop me from playing.”

Both teams ended the regular season on fivegame winning streaks, Tennessee finishing strong after a 3-4 start that included losses to Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida and Arkansas by a combined 17 points and

Football Florida quarterback Treon Harris had his moments early. But he also had a costly interception in the end zone late in the first half that stifled the Gators’ attempt to stay in the game.

Michigan took a 17-7 lead into halftime thanks largely to the efficiency of the Wolverines passing attack.

Michigan’s receivers did a great job creating lanes for Rudock to throw to, and ran crisp routes to open up deepplay opportunities.

The best example was on Rudock’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Jehu Chesson early in the second quarter that put Michigan up 14-7. Chesson used a double move, initially faking an inside slant, to strand and separate from cornerback Vernon Hargreaves.

Hogs carry momentum into Liberty Bowl MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kansas State coach Bill Snyder would rather not match up against a former colleague. Arkansas’ Bret Bielema doesn’t mind it nearly as much.

The friends meet as opposing head coaches for the first time today when Arkansas (7-5) squares off against Kansas State (6-6) in the Liberty Bowl.

Bielema worked as an assistant on Snyder’s Kansas State staff from 2002-03.

“It’s not my favorite thing to do, to play against or compete against coach-

es that have been through our program,” Snyder said. “It’s not for the reason that maybe they know something you don’t want them to know. It’s the human element of it more than anything else.”

Bielema has more trouble competing against a former colleague on the recruiting trail than the playing field.

“You lose a lot more friends recruiting than you do on game day,” Bielema said.

Kansas State and Arkansas got to this point by rallying late after nearly

playing their way out of postseason contention.

Arkansas, ranked 18th at the start of the season, lost three of its first four contests and was 2-4 halfway through the year.

The Razorbacks (7-5) now have a chance to end their season with seven wins in their last eight games.

“After how we started, it would be a great finish to our season,” Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen said. “Coach (offensive coordinator Dan Enos) is always saying we’re not a 7-5 team. We should be an eight-win team right now,

if not more. All we can do is try to be an eight-win team. That’s our goal.”

Kansas State dropped six straight games midway through the season and seemed destined for a seventh straight defeat when it trailed Iowa State 35-14 in the third quarter.

The Wildcats rallied to beat the Cyclones 3835 to start a three-game winning streak that made them bowl eligible.

“They were committed to improving,” Snyder said. “They were committed to turning things around.”

The defense did the rest, shutting down Baker Mayfield and a Sooners offense that was averaging 52 points over its previous seven games.

Clemson (14-0) showed the sort of balance it will need to cope with Alabama’s stifling defense, rushing for 312 yards and passing for 218. Watson, who was named the game’s offensive MVP, passed for one touchdown and ran for another. Reader wants contact with her son’s wife Annie’s Mailbox Dear Annie: I realize that this is a common issue, but I could still use some advice. When my son first married, his wife was loving and involved with the family. When the babies were born, we continued a warm relationship. Now that their children are older, however, our daughter-inlaw is cold and distant, and she is not interested in interacting with our extended family.

She grew up in a troubled family and seemed very happy to join ours.

But not anymore. We live nearby and other than chance meetings, occasional help with the children and family holidays, we seldom see my son.

We were told early on that we were not to visit unannounced, and we never have. If we didn’t attend the grandchildren’s school functions, we would never see them.

It seems that our daughter-in-law just doesn’t like us and wants minimal contact. Are we asking too much? Are we living in the past? Is there anything that can be done to improve the situation? You’ve advised parents in our situation to find other interests.

I think that if the young couples would imagine our situation in their own future, they might realize the extent of their hurtful behavior. — Crying

Mother Dear Mother: You are right that this is, unfortunately, a problem that many parents have. We don’t know why your daughter-in-law is behaving differently.

She may have her own emotional issues that prevent her from having a healthy relationship with you.

She may have been putting on a show for the past several years and doesn’t want to do it anymore. You may be behaving in a way that seems fine to you, but is annoying to her. You are not asking too much, but you might consider readjusting your expectations.

Do not criticize or assign blame. That will only make the situation worse. You can ask your son whether there is something you can do to help smooth over the relationship, and then do it. You can see whether your son will bring the kids over without his wife so she can get a break and you can spend time with

them. Or you can accept that this is how it is, being grateful that you get to see the family on holidays and at school events, and involving yourself in things that will bring you peace.

Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Fed Up,” who objected to people with buckets asking for money to help send their kids’ ecology class to Honduras.

As a teacher, I sponsored many clubs and teams. We did do outside fundraisers for charities where my students held buckets at the intersections in town and raised thousands of dollars. Although we didn’t bucketbeg for our own activities, I understand why they are so common now.

With recent tax cuts, schools have less money for optional activities, such as band trips, choral productions and academic competitions.

When you do a fundraiser through the school, like selling candy, the price of the item has to be inflated to allow a profit margin. With a bucket campaign, the group gets 100 percent of all donations.

Your advice was good.

If you don’t support the activity, keep your windows up and drive on by.
