UA Little Rock College Of Business to honor Guinn, Holbert as 2018 Distinguished Alumni by AN G E LITA FALLE R
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will honor Marcus Guinn, educational vice president and loan manager at Arvest Bank, as the College of Business Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, as well as Drew Holbert, principal and vice president of brokerage at Colliers International, as the Dean’s Award for Excellence winner at the 2018 College of Business Distinguished Alumni Luncheon on Oct. 17. The special award luncheon, presented by Arvest Bank, will be held at the Little Rock Marriott, 3 Statehouse Plaza. Registration opens at 10:45 a.m. with lunch served at 11:30 a.m. The highest honor granted by the UA Little Rock College of Business, the Distinguished Alumni award is given to a graduate who has made a significant impact in business or a nonprofit organization and who has served the community and UA Little Rock. In his current position, Guinn manages about 40 commercial loan officers and is responsible for the overall growth and probability of Arvest’s commercial loan port-
folio in central Arkansas, worth more than $1 billion. Guinn and his wife of 17 years, Valencia, live in Little Rock. He is the father of two sons, one daughter, and one grandson. Guinn is an active alumnus of UA Little Rock dedicated to the future success of College of Business students. He is a member of the College of Business Advisory Board. Through his work
at Arvest, which often partners with the UA Little Rock College of Business, Guinn attends many College of Business events and fundraisers, advising business students, giving valuable advice as a guest speaker, and mentoring those who intern at Arvest. “The College of Business is pleased to honor Marcus Guinn as the Distinguished Alumnus for 2018,” said Dr. Jane Wayland, Stephen Harrow Smith Dean of Business. “Marcus has been a very active member of the College of Business Advisory Board and has taken time to talk to our students and tell his story. ou may not be aware of it, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. Of course, you probably recognize, at least in a general sense, the importance of life insurance, but do you know the various ways in which it can help you? Life insurance can play a sizable role in your ability to achieve some important financial goals, such as these: Helping your family maintain its lifestyle – If you are married and have young children at home, you and your spouse may need to work. If you were no longer around and your earnings were gone, could your family still afford to live as they do now? Adequate life insurance can help them preserve their lifestyle. Helping your children continue their education – Even if you weren’t planning to foot the entire bill for your children’s college education, you still might be doing what you can, such as contributing to a 529 education savings plan. If your income was lost, could your family still afford to continue these contributions? With enough life insurance, you can improve the chances that your children will at least get some financial help for college or vocational training. Helping your survivors pay off debts – Are all your debts paid off? If not, you could be leaving your family on the hook for some of them, such as credit cards and car loans – not to mention your mortgage. Also, as uncomfortable as it may be to consider it, funeral and burial costs can easily run into the thousands. The proceeds of your life insurance policy can help pay down debts, handle your final expenses – and relieve your family of costly burdens. Helping your spouse build resources for retirement – It’s almost impossible for most of us to save too much for retirement. Your spouse may already have some retirement accounts, such as a 401(k) and an IRA, but will these be enough to sustain a long retirement? Through life insurance, you can potentially add significant amounts to your spouse’s retirement assets. As we’ve seen, you can accomplish a lot with life insurance. But how much do you need? If you want the appropriate amount of coverage, you should consider a variety of factors. How much do you earn? How much does your spouse earn? How many children do you have? How old are they? How much do you owe on your home? By answering these and other, similar questions, you can arrive at a coverage level that’s suitable for your needs. Also, keep in mind that those needs will change – for example, if your children are grown and you’ve downsized your living arrangements, you may require less insurance than at earlier times in your life. Life Insurance Awareness Month is a good time to remind yourself of the importance of insurance and of the need to own the correct amount. So, review your coverage soon – after all, you can’t predict the future, but you can still prepare for it. Writer, Editor, Teacher, and Sensei Paula Martin (“Tales from the South”, “Potluck and Poison Ivy”) announces the launch of her newest program, Wonder Girlz: Martial Arts Empowering Girls Inside and Out. She was the creator and producer of the long-running “Tales from the South” radio show, and is also an awardwinning writer and teacher who has been teaching creative writing and arts classes to kids and adults for over 25 years. Sensei Sophia Morell started Cuong Nhu at the age of 5 and earned her black belt this year at 14 years old, making her one of the youngest senseis in the whole international style. There’s promising news as researchers attempt to find the cause and the cure for Alzheimer’s disease. In the United States, the rate of Alzheimer’s diagnoses is not climbing as fast as in the past. There is speculation among researchers and physicians that, as Americans control their blood pressure and cholesterol to benefit their heart and circulatory system, they may also be ALUMNI

benefitting their brains. There is already ample evidence that physical activity of almost any kind enhances blood supply in the memory centers which keeps the brain healthy. A number of trials are under way to test whether lifestyle changes such as exercise and diet that are good for the heart can also prevent or postpone Alzheimer’s. Other promising research involves brain stimulation. Several different brainstimulation mechanisms are being tested, not only to treat and prevent Alzheimer’s, but also to improve cognition in people without dementia. Some of these devices are implanted into the brain, and some are worn externally like a headband. On another front, researchers found that an experimental treatment completely reversed Alzheimer’s disease in mice by reducing the levels of a single enzyme in the animals’ brains. The results further bolster the theory that amyloid plaques are at the
root of this mysterious brain disease, and that addressing these plaques could lead to an eventual cure for Alzheimer’s. This study, published Feb. 14, 2018, in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, found that slowly reducing levels of the enzyme BACE1 in mice as they aged either prevented or reversed the formation of amyloid plaques in the brain, a hallmark sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic at New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medicine noted that the results were promising and added further evidence that BACE1 inhibitor could be an effective Alzheimer’s treatment. But he warned that mice are too different from humans to validate assumptions about how these results will impact amyloid plaques in the human brain.
