The Art of Retirement Meet Pam Cook

When Pam Cook packed up her life in Morris County, New Jersey, in 2017, she wasn't just looking for a change of scenery; she was looking for a community. A retired chemical engineer with a twenty-three-year career at ExxonMobil and a second act as a high school math teacher, Pam is a woman who appreciates precision, but her heart truly belongs to the soft, vibrant world of pastel art. The move to Leland was a strategic, well thought out one. Pam and her partner, Donna, wanted to be within three hours of Pam’s daughter and two grown grandchildren. The criteria were specific: a small city feel, a nearby Unitarian church, easy beach access, and—importantly—no gated communities with "plantation" in the name. While Pam originally dreamed of a historic home, Donna (a veteran of historic home maintenance) encouraged her toward a new build. Today, they share their Leland home with a twelve-year-old rescue cat named Kramer, who earns his Seinfeld namesake by being just a little bit "nuts."
One of Pam’s biggest concerns about leaving New Jersey was losing her tight-knit artist community. However, she soon discovered that the local art scene was just waiting for a spark. Through a series of digital and personal connections, Pam began networking with local artists. What started as a Facebook message turned into a brunch for thirty people, eventually leading to the founding of the Coastal Carolina Pastel Painters.
Pam’s own work has traveled far beyond Brunswick County, appearing in shows from Landfall to New Mexico and California. For Pam, pastels beat traditional paint every time. She loves the lack of waste, the absence of messy mixing, and the forgiving nature of the medium.
But Pam’s life isn’t just about art; it’s also about impact. Whether she’s working with the Siembra organization on social justice issues or traveling the globe, she stays engaged. A transformative trip to Peru opened her eyes to the struggles of local schoolchildren who often walk four hours a day on empty stomachs. True to her "can-do" nature, Pam spearheaded fundraisers in her neighborhood, initially raising $2,000, and eventually stepped into the role of US Vice President for Path of the Heart.
Whether she’s perfecting a sunset in pastel or organizing a charity event, Pam Cook has proven that retirement isn't about slowing down, but about finally having the time to color outside the lines and give back.

A Good Night's Sleep Might Start at the Dentist

Brunswick Forest was built around the idea of living well. Morning walks, golf, time with family, and the kind of deep, uninterrupted sleep that retirement is supposed to bring. For a lot of residents, though, that last part is easier said than done. Snoring has a way of turning a quiet bedroom into a nightly source of frustration, for the person doing it and especially for the person lying next to them.
What most people do not know is that their dentist may be able to help.
BlueWave Dentistry, Brunswick Forest's only dental practice, recently added a Solea laser to its lineup of in-office technology. While most people associate the dentist with drills, X-rays, and the occasional uncomfortable impression tray, Solea opens the door to treatments that you may have not thought were possible. One of them might just change how well you sleep tonight.
"Snoring is something a lot of our patients mention almost in passing," says Dr. Andy Gould. "They bring it up to their spouse, their doctor, maybe their friends. But it never occurs to them to mention it at the dentist. That is exactly what we want to change."
The Solea laser can be used to perform a quick, comfortable procedure called Solea Sleep. Over time, the soft tissue at the top of the back of your mouth can relax, and when air passes over it during sleep, it vibrates. That vibration can create the sound of snoring.
The Solea Sleep treatment acts by tightening that tissue in (2) 30-minute painless sessions. It works by directing gentle energy at the soft palate and shrinking the collagen present in the palate and thus making the opening larger.. There are no incisions, no stitches, and no recovery time. Most patients say they do not feel anything during the procedure. Results typically last twelve to fifteen months, and the treatment can simply be repeated once a year to maintain them.

UNCW Theater Department Student Performance dazzle with professionalism

One of the absolute joys of living in a university town is the electric burst of creative energy it injects into our daily lives! While most of us are accustomed to planning our big nights out around downtown staples like Thalian Hall or the Wilson Center, there is a whole world of theatrical magic waiting just around the corner. If you loved branching out to explore the cozy charm of the Brunswick County theater scene with me last month (https://issuu.com/daigleinc/ docs/may_2026_brunswick_forest_ living?fr=xKAE9_zMzMw), you will be absolutely thrilled by what is cooking at the UNCW Department of Theatre!
Forget any outdated ideas about modest "student drama." These dazzling university productions are directed, designed, and brought to life by the department’s brilliant professional faculty. The results are high-caliber, high-energy shows that easily rival professional regional theaters. As the passionate department chair, Dr. Katherine Montwieler, puts it: “We offer audiences the opportunity to see professionally directed and designed productions at an unmatched price in the Wilmington area.”
My husband and I can personally vouch for that magic! We recently caught two phenomenal productions on the UNCW Mainstage—and here is a quick insider tip for your GPS: this intimate venue is tucked inside the Cultural Arts Building, not to be confused with Kenan Auditorium across campus.
First, we watched Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley and were utterly blown away. The acting standards were razorsharp, and the technical artistry—from the intricate set design to the evocative lighting—was pure genius. Having directed this exact Pulitzer Prize-winning play myself last year, I am the first to admit that UNCW raised the bar with a spectacular presentation! They followed up that triumph with The Play That Goes Wrong, a hilarious, high-octane riot of situational comedy directed by retiring Professor Ed Wagenseller. The wider community was just as enchanted; the department recently swept up an incredible 11 nominations at the 13th Annual Wilmington Theater Awards, celebrating outstanding artistic achievement across the board!
The theatre department presents four major Mainstage shows each year, running eight vibrant performances per show over two-week brackets. Crucially for those who prefer to skip driving after dark, every single run features a sunny 2:00 PM Sunday matinee.

Balancing Cardiac Care, Custom Designs, and the Perfect Toss

If you’re looking for the heart of the Heron Pointe social scene, you might want to follow the sound of laughter, the smell of a neighborhood fire pit, or the rhythmic thud of beanbags hitting wooden boards. Since landing in North Carolina in June 2024, Stacie and Mike Panek haven’t just moved into a new house; they’ve woven themselves into the fabric of the community with the kind of energy that makes you wonder if they ever actually sit down.
While they have certainly made a name for themselves on the local cornhole circuit, the game is just one chapter of a much larger story—one that began in a Pittsburgh nightclub and eventually led them to the shores of Brunswick Forest.
The Panek origin story is anything
but cliché. Back in 2005, Stacie found herself at a nightclub in Pittsburgh, though she wasn't exactly in peak dancing condition. She was recovering from knee surgery and navigating the crowd on crutches.
Spotting Mike across the room, she turned to her friend and mentioned she thought he was cute. Rather than waiting for fate to intervene, Stacie took matters into her own hands—or rather, her own crutches. She "hopped" right over to him and struck up a conversation. That bold move sparked a three-year courtship, leading to their wedding in 2008.
Marriage for Stacie didn’t just mean a new last name; it meant an instant family. Mike had two young daughters, then aged five and six, and Stacie dove headfirst into the role of a parent. The
couple celebrated their union with a honeymoon in Jamaica—a destination that held such a special place in their hearts that they returned two decades later with their entire family to share the magic of the island.
The transition from Pennsylvania "Steelers" to North Carolina "Salty Toes" was a gradual one, fueled by a stroke of luck from Mike’s professional life. Mike, who works remotely for a civil engineering and land surveying firm in Washington, Pa., was invited by his boss to stay at his home in Surf City. That taste of coastal living was the catalyst.
"We originally looked at Surf City because of those visits," the couple recalls. However, the decision of where to plant their permanent roots actually came down to their

youngest son, Ryan. After touring schools, Ryan felt a strong connection to Town Creek Elementary. With the school decided, the family worked backward to find the perfect neighborhood within that district. They landed in Heron Pointe, a choice they haven't regretted for a single second.
The Panek household is a whirlwind of high achievers, creative minds, and budding entrepreneurs:
Bri (27): Currently holding down the fort in Pennsylvania, Bri is a Master’s graduate in HR Health Care Management. When she isn't heading up HR for a major medical practice, she’s the ultimate "cat mom" and a dedicated volunteer at a local rescue.
Caitlin (26): Set to graduate from WVU in Pharmacy this May, Caitlin already has a career lined up at WVU Children’s Hospital. She, her husband, and their two Bernedoodles, Moose and Maple, are a vital part of the family’s frequent reunions.
Braden (16): A junior at North Brunswick High School (NBHS), Braden is the family’s resident athlete. He’s been hitting the links for seven years and is a key player on the NBHS golf team.
Ryan (13): Now an 8th grader at Town Creek Middle School, Ryan is a true Renaissance man. He plays trumpet in the school’s jazz band and runs a successful neighborhood trash can cleaning business. When he isn't working, he’s likely fishing or scouting the beach for shark teeth.
Hazel: The three-year-old Mini Goldendoodle and self-proclaimed "people person" who ensures no guest leaves the Panek home without offering a few cuddles.

While Stacie spends her days saving hearts as a Cardiology Nurse Practitioner with Wilmington Health, her evenings and weekends are often spent in her creative studio. In 2020, she launched Paynek Designs, a side business that allows her to channel her artistic energy.
If you attended the local regatta, you’ve already seen her work—she provided the custom T-shirts for the event. While she keeps her marketing lowkey to balance her full-time medical career, her reputation for quality has grown through word-of-mouth. Beyond apparel, Stacie creates intricate shadowboxes. Some serve as beautiful wedding mementos, while others offer a touching tribute as memorials for beloved pets who have passed. She even has a personal collection of shadowboxes used to showcase the impressive array of shark teeth the family has found on their beach excursions.
Of course, it’s hard to talk about the Paneks without mentioning the "Great Cornhole Migration." What started as a casual way to meet neighbors in their second season at Heron Pointe quickly turned into a neighborhood dynasty.

Stacie and Mike took home the trophy in Season Two and successfully defended their title in Season Three as backto-back champions of the L-Town Cornhole League. Braden soon joined the fray, partnering with their neighbor Ian in Season Four to bring another trophy into the house. Recently, Mike and Braden have begun testing their mettle in the "big leagues," participating in a Wilmington-based league to keep their skills sharp.
Though they are now locals, the Paneks still have the hearts of explorers. While many residents head north to Wilmington’s beaches, the Paneks prefer the southern coastline, frequently spending their weekends at Holden Beach, Oak Island, and Ocean Isle.
For this active couple, the move to North Carolina wasn't just about a change in latitude; it was about a change in lifestyle. Whether it’s a "driveway party," a boat launch celebration, or a quiet night by the fire pit with neighbors who have become like family, the Paneks have found their rhythm.
"I feel like we live in the best neighborhood of Brunswick Forest," Stacie says. "Everyone is so friendly, kind, and welcoming. We are very blessed to have such wonderful neighbors who look out for one another."
So, if you see a group cheering around a cornhole board, or a teenager with a trumpet and a trash can cleaning kit, stop by and say hello to the Paneks. Just a word of advice: if they offer to play you in a quick game of cornhole for bragging rights, you might want to keep your day job. The odds are definitely in their favor.
Short and Sweet Swing Fixes: Chip that Run across the Green

While it’s a relatively small little shot near the green, chip shots can wreak havoc and drive scores higher than necessary for novices and mid to higher handicap golfers. Instead of a nice low hop into the air and then a smooth roll towards the hole, the ball rockets across the green over the other side… not quite the plan! Chip ends with the letter P so the ball has just a little air but mostly roll, like a putt. It’s a smaller word than a pitch, so it’s a smaller shot in general. It’s
amazing how it can take a golfer one shot for the ball to travel 100 or even 200 yards and then take two or more shots from within 10 feet of the green. If you want to drop shots off your score, the short game is an ideal place to begin. It doesn’t take any power or massive distance… it’s a small shot that we strive to keep as simple as possible.
POSSIBLE CAUSES:
1. The club is catching the ball on the ascent or way up. The goal is to allow the clubhead to catch the ball at the end of the descent or just through the ball, but not on the way up.
2. The golfer is trying to get ‘under’ the ball. Truth be told, there usually isn’t

an ‘under’ hen the ball is lying on the ground unless it’s a fluffy rough lie or in the sand. The golf ball is touching the ground and when two hard surfaces touch, there isn’t an under. Just like trying to take a quarter and ask someone to get another quarter laying on a table up by going under it, all one would do is shove the quarter on the table off the end. One can’t get ‘under’ a quarter laying on the table, those are two hard surfaces touching, there isn’t any space. The goals is to catch the ball as the club descends or goes through the bottom of the ball.
3. The ball position is too far forward, catching the ball in the ascent of the swing… a No No!
4.The upper body is leaning or moving backwards creating a swing that moves up through the ball. The goal is to be center to slightly forward with the center (sternum) so the club can pass through or down through the ball, not up. This doesn’t mean popping the lead hip in front, which can still cause the upper body to lean backwards.
5. The golfer thinks he or she ‘hit it too hard’ when in actuality it just wasn’t struck solidly. The ball loves the middle of the clubface and so do we!

If you've ever gathered estimates for a painting project, you've probably noticed one quote is often significantly higher than the others. The natural question is: Why?
The answer is simple—not all paint jobs are created equal.
At first glance, painting may seem straightforward. But the difference between a finish that looks great for a few months and one that still looks beautiful years later comes down to preparation, materials, craftsmanship, and professionalism.
PREPARATION MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
The most important part of any quality paint job happens before the paint is applied. Proper preparation includes sanding, caulking, repairing damaged surfaces, and priming where needed. When prep work is rushed or skipped, paint is more likely to peel, crack, or fail prematurely.
QUALITY MATERIALS MATTER
Premium paints cost more, but they provide better coverage, longerlasting color, and improved resistance to moisture and mildew—especially important here in coastal North Carolina. The paint itself is only part of the investment; its long-term performance is what delivers value.

One of the things I enjoy most about what I do is getting a first look at new businesses coming to our community. This morning, I had the opportunity to meet with Siara Denicola, Office Manager, and Morgan Bates, Aesthetician, at the new Beach Aesthetics location in Leland.

Charcuterie Board with the perfect wine pairing

Ah charcuterie: the key to no-stress entertaining. As far as hosting parties goes, charcuterie is a real win-win for everyone involved. It’s easy to throw together – even last minute. – So, what’s Charcuterie? Charcuterie is a French word that literally means “cooked meats”. When serving charcuterie for a party it’s usually presented alongside cheese, bread, condiments, and other accoutrements.
WHAT YOU NEED
Serving board, platters, or butcher paper
Napkins, toothpicks, forks & knives
Small plates (this is optional, charcuterie can be served without plates)

Light Charcuterie
If you love delicious, cured meat that’s high on flavor but lower on spice, there are a plethora of lovely meats for you to pair and enjoy. We recommend trying salty, mild meats like prosciutto, soppressata, or mortadella, all ideal for a beginner’s charcuterie.
For wines, try pairing these savory meats with your choice of lighter-bodied white wines (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio) or light to medium-bodied red wines (Pinot Noir, Merlot) If you’re feeling adventurous, sparkling wines (such as Prosecco and Rosé) (especially French and Italian varietals) can quickly enhance the taste of this type of charcuterie.
PRO TIP: allow 3-5 oz of each cheese and charcuterie per person when served as a main course.
MEDIUM CHARCUTERIE
In addition to adding some extra kick to your board, moderately spiced charcuterie opens your options to a new world of tantalizing wine pairings. We recommend exploring charcuterie that spices up your board without overwhelming your palate. For your first step into this world of bolder flavor, try pancetta, peppered salami, or chorizo picante to gauge your ideal balance of salt and spice.
For wine pairings with this type of bolder charcuterie, light-bodied whites (Chenin Blanc, Verdejo) and fruity reds (Malbec, Gamay) are perfect companions for more robust spices and savory notes of meat.
Pro Tip: allow 3-5 oz of each cheese and charcuterie per person when served as a main course.
BOLD CHARCUTERIE
If you’re a person who lives life to the fullest and enjoys some exceptionally flavorful meat, bold and spicy charcuterie is the choice for you.
We recommend dipping your toe into the water of the boldest charcuterie by sampling favorites like Bresaola, Black Truffle Salami, and Spanish Dry Chorizo, but be prepared for a serious increase in flavor, spice, and complexity.

To balance out the aggressive profile of bolder charcuterie, you need an equally bold and well-structured wine that can hold its own with your meat selection.
We recommend fuller-bodied reds (such as Syrah) or medium to full-bodied whites (like Chardonnay) that won’t be overpowered by their charcuterie companions.
CHEESE & WINE PAIRING
While there are many delicious and creative wine and cheese pairings to be found, we will focus our guide specifically on a few main varieties of EASY-TO-PAIR CHEESES:
Gruyere, Havarti, or a young Gouda = Pair with dry white like Chardonnay or rustic red like Bordeaux Aged Cheddar, Parmesan or Manchego = Pair with well-aged, bold red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah
PRO TIP: set your cheeses out before serving so they can come up to room temperature by serving time – usually about an hour ahead. Super cold cheese served straight from the refrigerator is less aromatic and therefore, less tasty.
FRUIT, CRUNCHY AND BREAD
Whether it’s fresh or dried, fruit adds so much to a charcuterie and cheese platter, they help cleanse the palette while adding a sweet touch to the savory and salty components. Adding something crunchy helps bring a charcuterie board to life! Try adding gourmet potato chips, as well as nuts like marcona almonds, walnuts or pistachios.
