The Art of Active Living: Nancy's Inspiring Path Through Retirement

BY DOREEN SARGENTE Nancy Holly has lived more places within ten miles of Leland than most people manage in a lifetime. She first landed in Brunswick Forest in 2008, hopped over to Waterford, then then back to Brunswick Forest, then off to Compass Pointe, and finally—seven years ago—made her triumphant return to Brunswick Forest, which she now calls her “forever home.” Given her energy level, it’s a wonder the home can keep up.

Nancy is the kind of woman who makes you wonder why the rest of us ever claim to be “busy.” She gardens with gusto, plays a mean game of pickleball and tennis, rides her bike like the wind, and hikes with the enthusiasm of someone half her age. She golfs, travels, and is an avid birder—because evidently checking just some of the boxes wasn’t enough. Step into her house and you’ll find a gallery’s worth of her photography on the walls, plus recent stained-glass projects catching the light like they’re auditioning for a museum.

She has two sons—one in Maryland, one in Pennsylvania—and five grandkids who, no doubt, assume Grandma has more stamps in her passport than they do. They’re probably right.

Nancy met her boyfriend while living in Waterford, when a sudden rainstorm forced her to take refuge while walking her pup. There she was, dripping wet under a tree, and along came Bob Dobbins, biking and equally wet. Nothing sparks romance like shared shelter and questionable weather. Her 2026 calendar looks like it belongs to a National Geographic correspondent: Mexico to witness the monarch butterfly migration, a biking and hiking trip through Greece, and an autumn trek in Moab with three friends. Retirement, clearly, has not slowed her down; if anything, it’s turned her loose.

In her former life, Nancy was a high school math teacher—an amusing contrast to the creative whirlwind she is today. She jokes that she’s finally giving her right brain its moment in the sun.

Considering everything she’s packed into her socalled “slower years,” one has to assume her right brain is having the time of its life.

"CEREC's claim to fame is 'crowns in a day,'" explains Dr. Biggerstaff, who started using the technology back in 2008. Since moving to the current Brunswick Forest building in 2010, he's watched the technology evolve significantly. "It's like computers—it needs updates fairly often, and eventually needs replacing or a major overhaul. It's a big investment."

So how does it actually work?

Instead of the traditional messy impressions and temporary crowns, the dentist takes a digital scan of your tooth. Then, in about two to three hours, you walk out with your permanent crown.

Dr. Andy Gould, who has two and a half years of experience with CEREC, emphasizes the precision advantage. "A digital image has little to no variation," he notes. "A lab isn't as precise, and that means 8

our crowns fit better. When they fit better, they last longer."

Remember that broken tooth scenario? "If a patient has an emergency—like breaking a tooth when you're only in town visiting— this is for you," says Dr. Biggerstaff.

With the traditional method, you'd need traditional impressions, a temporary crown, and then wait four to six weeks for the permanent tooth to come back from the lab.

These Spicy Cocktail Meatballs strike a delicious balance of heat and sweetness, thanks to a glossy glaze made with pepper jelly and smoky chipotles in adobo. Tender, savory, and full of bold flavor, they come together easily and are guaranteed to be the star of your appetizer table.

Serve them warm with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro for a vibrant finish your guests will love.

INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon hot pepper jelly

Meatballs

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 pound 80% lean ground beef 1/2 pound ground pork

2 teaspoons finely chopped chipotle chiles in adobo

1/3 cup panko

Glaze

1 large egg, beaten

1/4 cup hot pepper jelly

2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro, plus more for garnish

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

2 garlic cloves, grated (about 1 teaspoon) 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon paprika

2 tablespoons adobo sauce (from canned chipotles) 1/4 cup chicken stock 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander

PREPARE THE MEATBALLS Preheat oven to broilwith the rack about 7 inches from the heat. In a large bowl, mix together the beef, pork, panko, egg, cilantro, garlic, salt, paprika, pepper, coriander, pepper jelly, Worcestershire sauce, and chopped chipotle until combined.

SHAPE AND BROIL Divide the mixture into 20 portions (about 2 tablespoons each) and roll into 1 1/2-inch balls. Place on a foil-lined baking sheet, spacing about 1 inch apart.

Broil until the tops are golden brown, 5–6 minutes.

MAKE THE GLAZE In a large skillet, combine the chicken stock, apple cider vinegar, pepper jelly, Worcestershire sauce, and adobo sauce. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, whisking often, until slightly thickened, 2–3 minutes.

COAT THE MEATBALLS Add the broiled meatballs to the skillet. Cook, tossing often, until fully coated and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center reaches 160°F, about 3 minutes.

SERVE Transfer to a serving bowl with extra sauce. Garnish with cilantro and serve hot.

W

hen Stephanie Kent met her husband Jeff at UNC-Greensboro decades ago, neither of them could have imagined that 40 years later they’d still be a dynamic duo — just with more fur, fewer term papers, and a lot more basket weaving. Stephanie was an undergrad, Jeff was earning his master’s, and as fate (and maybe a little Southern charm) would have it, the two hit it off.

Fast-forward four decades and the Kents are still very much a team — in marriage, in life, and in service to others. They now call Meadow Park in Brunswick Forest home, where they’ve been part of the community for eight years. Their neighborhood, with just about 50 14

homes, is close-knit in every sense. “We’re small enough to really know everyone,” Stephanie says. “Our neighbors are supportive and quick to lend a hand. We’ve even traveled to Europe with a few of them — and somehow we’re all still friends!”

Jeff serves as the HOA President and Stephanie chairs the Social Committee — a classic power couple move.

But their real passion project involves four paws and a leash. Stephanie volunteers with Canines for Service (CFS), a Wilmington-based nonprofit that trains service dogs for military veterans. And though it started as “Steph’s thing,” Jeff soon found himself swept up in the mission too.

© Best Version Media “It began when we first moved to the area,” Stephanie explains. After retiring from a long career in special education and early intervention — including time at George Washington University and the Child Development Services Agency — she went to a volunteer fair at the Wilson Center. That’s where she first encountered Canines for Service.

“I just signed up to walk dogs,” she says modestly. “Next thing you know, we were fostering puppies and adult dogs in training. Now I’m doing everything from grant research to helping plan the annual Gala.”

FROM THE HEART, FOR THE HEROES

For Stephanie, the mission hits home. Her father served in the Navy, her brother in the Army’s Old Guard — he was even at the Pentagon on 9/11. Jeff’s family also carries a strong military legacy. So when Stephanie learned that CFS provides fully trained service dogs to veterans at no cost, she knew it was where she belonged.

Growing up near Washington, D.C., during the Vietnam War, Stephanie remembers seeing veterans return home to a country that didn’t always welcome them back with the respect they deserved. “That memory stuck with me,” she says. “So being part of something that supports veterans now — in such a meaningful, tangible way — it just feels right.”

These days, her volunteering schedule is as full as a dog’s calendar before grooming day. She walks dogs weekly, pitches in on administrative tasks, and serves on the organization’s Fundraising and Development Committee. “The most rewarding part is watching these dogs grow,” she says. “You see them start as wiggly little puppies and eventually transform into calm, confident partners who change a veteran’s life.”

© Best Version Media nights. “The toughest part is funding,” she says. “Training a service dog takes about two years — and that’s a big investment. There are always more veterans who need help, and we want to reach them all.”

A SHARED PURPOSE (AND PLENTY OF FUR)

While Stephanie may be the driving force behind their involvement, Jeff is far from a passive bystander.

When he’s not golfing or working on stained glass commissions — a hobby he picked up soon after moving to Leland — he’s right there beside her, helping foster dogs. “It really became a family thing,” Stephanie laughs. “Jeff was so supportive, and now he loves it as much as I do. Having the dogs in the house again has been such a comfort.”

Their beloved family dog, Riley, passed away after 15½ wonderful years — a loss that left a noticeable quiet in their home. “Fostering for CFS has filled that void,” Stephanie says softly. “Each dog that comes through our door brings a little bit of joy back. And knowing they’ll go on to serve a veteran makes it even more special.”

For both of them, the most unforgettable moments come during placement ceremonies — when a veteran officially takes “the leash” of their new service dog. “It’s emotional every single time,” Stephanie admits. “You think about all the hours of training, all the love poured into these dogs, and then you see them meet their person — their partner. It’s life-changing for both of them. I always leave with tears in my eyes, in the best way.”

CFS, she says, stands out not just for what it does but how it does it. “They’re internationally accredited, but they still hold themselves to an even higher standard,” she explains. “They’re constantly improving, refining their methods, and expanding their reach. I’ve been with them for seven years now and have seen such positive growth.”

The organization’s staff, she adds, are nothing short of inspiring. “They work so hard and care so deeply. They treat volunteers like part of the team, and they train us thoroughly so we’re confident and capable. I’ve learned so much from them.”

Stephanie encourages anyone with a love of dogs or a heart for veterans to get involved. “You don’t need to be a dog expert,” she says. “There are so many ways to help — walking, fostering, office work, events. Every little bit matters.”

A LIFE WELL-LIVED — AND WELL-LOVED

When they’re not volunteering or attending community events, the Kents enjoy traveling — especially to Scotland and Ireland, where the landscapes seem tailor-made for golf swings and pub songs. Their daughter Kayleigh and her husband Justin live nearby in Grayson Park, so family gatherings are frequent and full of laughter (and probably fur, given their three

As for Meadow Park life, Stephanie says it’s everything they hoped it would be. “We came to North Carolina because it felt like home — we went to school here, vacationed here. We always knew we’d come back someday,” she says. “And now we’re surrounded by great neighbors, wonderful memories, and plenty of reasons to keep smiling.”

Kayleigh teaches at Town Creek Elementary, and Justin is pursuing an AI certificate — proving that the Kent family isn’t just about compassion, but curiosity too. Kayleigh also rides horses, continuing the family’s streak of athleticism (Jeff golfs, Kayleigh plays softball, Stephanie cheers).

Asked what she hopes for the future of Canines for Service, Stephanie doesn’t hesitate. “Growth,” she says. “I want to see them continue to help more veterans, to train more dogs, and to spread awareness. If I had my wish, every veteran who needs a service dog would have one.”

Until then, she and Jeff will keep walking, fostering, and fundraising — proving that sometimes love really does come on four legs and a wagging tail.

Where Teapots Tell Stories: A Visit to The Timeless Table

Understanding Wedges for the New Golfer

BY NICOLE WELLER For a new golfer, having 14 different clubs can be confusing with all the options. Most sports have 1 piece of equipment at a time like tennis, soccer, cricket and lacrosse, to name a few. Imagining a tennis player needing to get a different racquet for each different type of shot like a serve, lob shot, soft cut shot over the next, hard forehand from the baseline and so on. Keeping it simple for new golfers is good!

but essentially we’re really hitting a former 8 iron… tricky marketing! Whatever the label is, find the right lofts that help your yardage. Most new golfers do better with just 5 clubs and then add from there as they learn how to use the clubs better and see more need for extra clubs and distances.

I actually call my S wedge not my Sand Wedge but my Stop Wedge, since I use it mostly out of the grass and other lies and not strictly out of the sand. I want that high lofted club to launch high and then stop on the green from all kinds of surfaces. The ‘sand’ wedge is not just for the sand.

Way back there wasn’t a limit on the number of clubs a golfer could have… in fact some caddies were lugging 26 clubs (or more!) in their players’ bags like Lawson Little, who won back-to-back U.S. and British Amateur Championships in 1934-1935. In modern days, sets usually have a putter, several wedges, 9 iron, 8 iron, 7 iron (clubs were actually made of forged iron!), several hybrids, several fairway woods or fairway metals and a driver.

• Gap Wedge (or Approach, Dual, Utility with other companies) would be roughly your 11 Iron

Wedges tend to be the higher lofted clubs in the set.

Here are some ideas to help new golfers understand the Wedge World, as it can be confusing with how they’re labeled… we chip with a pitching wedge and pitch with a sand wedge, how does THAT make sense?!?

LPGA / PGA INSTRUCTOR PRIVATE LESSONS CLINICS & SCHOOLS

The lofts on a club dictate how high the club can launch the ball into the air. Traditionally the ‘Lob’ Wedge has 60-64 degrees of loft, a ‘Sand’ Wedge 55-59 degrees of loft, a ‘Gap’ Wedge 50-54 degrees of loft and a ‘Pitching’ Wedge 45-49 degrees of loft, roughly. Companies have labeled the wedges but it’s nice to see that manufacturers are putting the degrees on the clubs now instead of the labels like P, W, S, L, A, D , U… degrees are changing to lower lofts so instead of a pitching wedge being 46 degrees, some are now 39 degrees.

The higher the number, the higher the shot in golf. I also have students think of it this way, if the image helps… S Wedge lands and flies Super Short while a P Wedge lands and flies Pretty Short, it runs more than an S Wedge.

I hope that helps some with fun imagery and words. If starting out with just one wedge, I’d recommend a Pitching Wedge (some have a P or W or PW on it… and that doesn’t stand for Putter, which often newbies mistake that letter for). If wanting two wedges, I’d recommend a Pitching Wedge and a Stop/Sand Wedge. Those will give you different lofts.
