HOC ROSE SANCTUARY RESCUE Stacy, MN hocrosesanctuaryrescue.org HOC Rose Sanctuary Rescue was founded by Kari Belevender, Signe Reistad, Julie Hausner Bauch and Teresa Domagalski on Oct 31, 2016 in Stacy MN. They all realized there was a need for a blind horse rescue in the area. There are now five horses in the rescue: Cami, Sunny, Sabrina, Sasha and Oliver. As well as providing a safe sanctuary for blind horses, the rescue educates those who want to keep their blind horses but don’t know how to care for them. Someday the rescue would like to form a therapy program where blind horses and humans in need can help each other.
MINNESOTA HOOVED ANIMAL RESCUE FOUNDATION Zimmerman, MN mnhoovedanimalrescue.org The Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation has been rescuing equines and other animals in need since 1994. That means in 2019 we are celebrating 25 years of this important work! We work in conjunction with law enforcement departments around the entire state, along with MN Federated Humane Societies and the Animal Humane Society of MN, to take in horses and other hooved animals that have been seized in humane cases. Since 1994, MHARF has taken in over 2,500 horses, ponies, mules, donkeys, and other hooved (and even non-hooved) animals in need. Though the majority of our animals come through humane cases in which they have been seized by law enforcement, when space permits we also accept surrendered and donated horses from individuals who can no longer keep them for various reasons. All animals in our care receive all necessary veterinary and farrier care. We have a number of trainers we hire to do training assessments and also to continue with training for horses that require a “refresher” course. Horses that have not been started under saddle are generally placed in our yearly Trainers' Challenge (which takes place in September) before they are made available for adoption. We also provide resources and advice to people struggling with issues related to owning and caring for equines, assist law enforcement in making recommendations to help people improve care for their animals, and work to educate the public on equine welfare, including responsible ownership and care, responsible breeding practices, and making humane end-of-life decisions for their animals. We absolutely could not do this work without the help of our amazing supporters, donors, volunteers, foster homes and adoptive homes! MHARF is thrilled to be included as one of the nonprofit partners of the 2019 Horse Crazy Holiday Market. We have been involved in this event since 2014 and it has always given us the perfect opportunity to meet new people, catch up with old friends, and share information about our program. rivervalleyriders.org The mission of River Valley Riders (RVR) is to enrich the lives of children and adults with special needs by providing equine assisted activities and therapies. Lessons are conducted in accordance with the safety, training and instructional guidelines of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International. RVR is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1999 and donations are tax deductible. River Valley Riders provides a unique and motivating experience, contributing positively to the physical, social and communication skills of people with disabilities. Physical Benefits: The gentle three-dimensional movement of the horse, which simulates human walking, serves to strengthen core body muscles, improve posture and coordination, and increase overall balance and joint mobility. Social Skills: As the rider/driver learns to control the horse there is a feeling of true accomplishment. This personal achievement translates into improved self-confidence and self-esteem. A trusting and affectionate relationship often develops between the horse, rider/driver, and volunteers, which can carry over with the person’s ability to relate better with other people. Communication Abilities: The riding/driving experience stimulates language and learning. The rider/driver develops the ability to listen to instructions and communicate directions to the horse. Concentration and memory are potentially improved as the rider/driver attends each session and carries over techniques from week to week.

Founded in 2012, This Old Horse is a private, volunteer-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide sanctuary to retired, rescued, and recovering horses while they continue to serve as ambassadors to the positive effect of "horse power" in the lives of people. Their mission is to create a sanctuary for aged and unwanted horses who have served us well. They are a retirement refuge for horses who, alongside their human professionals, have worked hard for a living. As these horses age, time and effort take their toll, and they are no longer capable of full-time work. Often their owners or handlers must move them out to make room for more able-bodied replacements. They give these veterans a safe harbor for life where they may age in place, loved, honored and respected to the end. They are a Certified Rescue and help abused, neglected and abandoned horses recover. They also support horses whose owners have experienced hardship and are unable to care for them as well as horses who need rehabilitation services to recover from injury. In 2016, they were honored to be one of only about 30 equine sanctuaries in the United States to be accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS).
