I thought it was a really good performance – we played some really good football, and the way the game panned out, being 2-0 down, the players showed great character getting back into the game. I’m pleased to have taken a point against a very good side and now we look forward to tonight. On the character within the squad…

This team has huge character, huge belief and huge quality as well. Of course, we don’t want to find ourselves in a position where we’re 2-0 down in a game as we have a couple of times this season, but I think it really speaks to the attitude this team possesses to never give in and keep working to get the result. It’s just about us now ironing out a few mistakes in both boxes and winning games of football. On tonight’s opposition…

It’s going to be a tough game – it’s never an easy fixture when you’re playing Maidenhead. They get the ball forward quickly; they get it wide, load the box and have good wide men who look to find a cross as early as possible. Alan

On moving up the table…

It’s a big incentive for us to go and chase teams down now. That’s our aim for the rest of the season, to climb the table as quickly as possible. Our performance levels have been really high over the last five or so games, and if we can keep playing as consistently as we have been, I’m really confident we will find ourselves in a better position in a few weeks’ time. On the fans’ support…

We do really miss having the fans at our games. One of the most difficult aspects of this season is the fact that the fans aren’t able to attend, so we’re looking forward to getting through as quickly as possible so we can start to welcome everyone back to Victoria Road. Magpies held on to beat off the challenge of Ebbsfleet to win the title on the final day of the season, securing the Vanarama National League South Manager of the season award for Alan.

ALAN DEVONSHIRE (Manager) Born: 13/04/56 Alan returned to York Road in May 2015 for his second spell as United manager, leading to great success, winning the Vanarama National League South and Berks and Bucks Senior Cup in 2017. He led the Magpies to a top half finish in their inaugural Vanarama National League season in 2018, winning the April Manager of the month award. This echoed his earlier time in charge of the Magpies, his first senior managerial post, over seven seasons from 19962003, which saw an historic promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, and the end of a twenty-sevenyear silverware drought with wins in the Isthmian League Full Members Cup and four Berks & Bucks Senior Cup triumphs. Since leaving United in 2003, Alan’s managerial career has gone from strength to strength. Firstly, taking Hampton & Richmond Borough from the Isthmian League to the brink of the National League, then defying the odds to not only consolidate Braintree Town’s place in the National League but also to mount a push towards the play offs. On his return to United his team brought Port Vale back to York Road for an FA Cup 1st Round replay in November 2015 after an unforgettable draw at Vale Park. A final league position of 7th in 2016 served notice of a tilt at promotion and after topping the table in August the 06 THE DAGGER

As a player Alan was a much-loved midfielder at West Ham United where he made over 400 appearances including the famous 1980 FA Cup Final win. Initially rejected as a youngster by Crystal Palace, Alan was then plucked from non-league Southall by the Hammers and went on to win eight England caps. Injury hampered his career from the mid 80s and he finished his playing days at Watford in 1992. After success as a manager in junior football with Osterley, Alan was appointed joint manager of Maidenhead United in the summer of 1996 alongside Martyn Busby, taking sole charge in March 1997. 1. TAYE ASHBY-HAMMOND (Goal) Born: 21/03/99 Fulham Under 23 keeper who was initially signed on loan in the summer of 2019 having impressed for the Magpies in preseason. Having had two temporary spells at York Road last season, Taye returns on a season long loan for this campaign – Taye also has senior experience with Chipstead. He has gradually made his way through the ranks at Craven Cottage. His younger brother Luca is also on Fulham’s books. Capped for England at Under 16 and Under 17 level. 25. SAM BARRATT (Attack) Born: 25/08/95 Prodigious talent who returned to York Road in the summer after two years at Southend United. Sam originally signed for the Magpies from Bracknell Town in the summer of 2014. He is a left sided striker who was initially used as an impact sub. Has an eye for goal, particularly at set pieces. An England C Cap, his time at Roots Hall was marred by a serious injury in training at the start of his first season

with the Shrimpers, having made his Football League debut on the opening day. After a long recovery, Sam successfully returned to the first team in January 2020. 9. NATHAN BLISSETT (Attack) Born: 29/1/90. Powerful centre forward signed in the summer from Solihull. Nathan started his career in the midlands at Staffordshire University going on to play for Kidsgrove Athletic and Romulus before signing for Kidderminster. Loan spells followed with Cambridge United and Hednesford Town before joining promotion-bound Bristol Rovers in 2015. Whilst at the Memorial Stadium, Blissett was borrowed by Tranmere Rovers and Lincoln City. A move to Devon came in January 2016 and following a year with Torquay United Blissett moved to the Gulls neighbours Plymouth Argyle. The experienced 30year-old has since appeared for Macclesfield Town and Solihull Moors in the National League. 6. REMY CLERIMA (Defence) Born: 20/09/90 Cultured French defender signed in November 2016. Used principally as a right back but is

equally at home in the centre of defence or midfield. Last season Remy often played further up the pitch, scoring five times. Combines his football with a successful career as a male model. Has National League experience with Braintree and has also played for Histon, Brackley and Lorient. 2017/18 Manager’s Player of the Year. 7. JOSH COLEY (Midfield) Born: 24/7/98. Right winger signed in the summer from Stotfold. Josh was on York City’s books as a youngster then established himself in non-league football with Hitchin Town. Following a successful spell on loan at Baldock Town he signed for Norwich City going onto play senior football whilst on loan with Dunfermline. 8. JAMES COMLEY (Midfield) Born: 24/01/91 Highly regarded playmaker who initially signed from St. Albans on loan in February 2016. He went onto play a key role in the Magpies push for the play offs and was signed up at the end of the season. One of the leading lights in the Magpies title winning team due to the way his inspirational runs drive the team forward, often finishing with a defence splitting pass. James started his career at Crystal Palace and went onto play a leading role in the Saints resurgence as part of their Southern League Premier Division promotion winning team of

2014. Current Montserrat international. Made his 150th full appearance for the Magpies last season. 12. BRADLEY KEETCH (Midfield) Born: 19/09/00 Exciting teenage prospect who signed a senior contract in October 2018 and went onto score on his full debut at Holmer Green in the County Cup. A leading light of the youth team that made a record breaking run to the FA Cup 3rd round in 2019. Part of the club’s fledgling academy programme, and the first to graduate to the first team. Spent time on loan at Farnborough last season. 22. JOSH KELLY (Attack) Born: 19/12/98 Promising young striker who signed a contract on his 18th birthday having already made his first team debut, scoring the winner in a County Cup tie at Marlow. Farmed out on a season long loan at Walton Casuals last term achieving great success in their promotion season. Josh scored forty goals for the Casuals as well as a penalty in the shootout which won them the play offs. Moved up to the first team in style garnering attention early on in the 2018/19 with some eye-catching goals against the likes of Eastleigh and Halifax, making his full Northern Ireland Under 21 debut in March 2019. 10. DANILO ORSI (Attack) Born: 19/4/96. Summer signing from Hampton, Danilo is a composed striker

with an excellent track scoring record in the National League South. Anglo-Italian Orsi’s formative years were spent in the USA playing for Eastern Florida. On his return to Britain he played for Oldham, East Thurrock and Hungerford. 5. MANNY PARRY (Defence) Born: 20/1/94 Commanding centre back signed in the summer from Woking, Manny returns to York Road having spent a loan spell with the Magpies in 2013 whilst with Stoke City. He joined the Potters from Millwall and also spent time on loan at Weston-super-mare and Nuneaton. Has gone onto become a highly regarded defender at the top echelons of the Non-league pyramid playing for Worcester City, Grays Athletic, Maidstone United, Margate, Braintree, Dover and Boreham Wood. Selected for the 2018 Non-League Paper team of the season. 16. RYHEEM SHECKLEFORD (Defence) Born: 20/05/97 Right back signed in August 2018, Ryheem started his career at Fulham. He worked his way up through the ranks at Craven Cottage, appearing in the 2014 FA Youth Cup final and captaining the Under 18s the following season. Gained senior experience with a loan spell at Wealdstone. Spent time on loan at Walton Casuals during the 2018/19 season and went onto secure a regular berth in the Magpies starting 11 last season on the right side of the pitch.

Inspirational defender and captain who joined manager Alan Devonshire in moving from Braintree Town to York Road in May 2015. Alan is a commanding centre back who was at Cressing Road for almost three seasons, making over 100 appearances. He has also played for Wealdstone and Wycombe Wanderers. Club captain, Alan gained national fame when he gave the Magpies the lead live on BT Sport in the FA Cup 1st Round replay against Port Vale at York Road. Ever present in the title winning season, leading the parsimonious defence by example, he reached the hundred appearance mark for United early on last season. 2017/18 Supporters’ Player of the Year Runner-Up. Passed the 200-appearance mark last season.

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 17. REECE SMITH (MIdfield) Youth team graduate who impressed with his attacking play in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup last season and was named on the bench in the National League.

11. DAN SPARKES (Midfield) Born: 20/09/91 Left winger signed in the summer from Barnet to reunite with manager Alan Devonshire for whom he played at Braintree. Dan started his career at Histon and has also played for Torquay United and Dagenham. 15. SETH TWUMASI (Defence) Born: 15/05/90 Versatile defender signed in November 2018 from Maidstone United. Seth started his career at Chelsea working his way through the ranks to earn a professional contract with the Blues whilst representing England at Under 16, 17, 18 and 20 level. Born in Ghana, Seth can play anywhere along the defensive line and in midfield. He made his senior debut on loan at Dagenham & Redbridge before leaving Stamford Bridge for Peterborough United. He continued in the Football League with Northampton Town and Newport Country, joining the Stones in September 2016, just after their return to the top tier of non-league football. Since signing for the Magpies, he has mostly filled the right back role but also played in front of the defence in midfield last season.

19. RYAN UPWARD (Midfield) Born: 19/05/92 All action local central midfielder who joined the Magpies from Burnham in the summer of 2014. Also has experience with Flackwell Heath and Beaconsfield SYCOB. Now the longest serving player at the club he enjoyed his best season for the Magpies in 2017/18 passing the hundred full appearance mark and capping the campaign by scoring the winner at Leyton Orient. Always makes his presence felt on the pitch, chipping in with the occasional goal. Made his 150th full appearance for the Magpies last season. 3. GEORGE WELLS (Defence) Born: 09/01/96 Left back signed in the

summer, making the short trip over the county line from Slough. George was a member of the Rebels team that made it to the National League South play offs last season, having been supporters’ player of the year in 2018. Also has experience with Kingstonian. 2. JERRY WILTSHIRE (Defence) Born: 02/04/96Summer signing having impressed in pre-season friendlies. Jerry is a central defender who has spent most of his playing career in the USA having crossed the pond to study in Tennessee. Born in North London, Jerry was on the books of QPR as a teenager. He has gone on to play for Bethel Wildcats, Memphis City, Chattanooga, Peachtree City, West Florida Argonauts and Des Moines Menace. An international cap, scoring on his debut for the British Virgin Islands against Turks and Caicos in the CONCACAF Nations League in March 2019.

Off the back of the two sloppy goals we conceded against Boreham Wood we really need to cut those errors out, not just against Maidenhead tonight, but for the rest of the season, because there's been too many for our liking. Too often we have found ourselves behind in games we are on top in due to individual errors or lapses in concentration. Teams then have something to defend, and it gives us a mountain to climb, especially when other teams don’t gift us the same kind of goals. It shows the character of the boys to come back from two goals down again, however. A point was the least our performance deserved, but it can only be seen as a good point if we back it up with a result against Maidenhead. 10 THE DAGGER

Unfortunately Angelo Balanta and Paul McCallum haven't been able to play together too often this season due to injuries, but you can see they’re starting to form an understanding. They’re both terrific players in their own right but they also are very different which we have seen compliments both their games nicely. With a run of games together I think you will only see them get better. Maidenhead have drawn 3 of their last five games and lost narrowly to Boreham Wood, so it shows they’re hard to beat. When you play Maidenhead, first and foremost you need to compete against them physically and earn the right. They’re always tough games and we are prepared for another tough game tonight.

ACTIONSTATIONS V BOREHAMWOOD

With just Nathan Ashmore to beat, Balanta’s effort was blocked by the legs of the Boreham ‘keeper, before he smothered the ball at the second attempt. With ten minutes left in the first half, the visitors had a great chance to take the lead against the run of play, as Kabongo Tshimanga fed Jamal Fyfield into plenty of space inside the box, but the defender could only fire into the side netting, much to the relief of the Daggers’ defence.

Approaching the break, Balanta was once again finding himself with a chance to shoot, after a Daggers’ corner was nodded down by McCallum at the near post. With the goal at his mercy, the attacker saw his effort expertly stopped by the Nathan Ashmore.

Angelo Balanta’s second half double claims a deserved point against Boreham Wood.

Despite being on the back foot for large spells of the first half, Boreham Wood entered the break ahead, with former Dagenham forward Corey Whitely prodding home from a yard out. The Wood doubled their lead just after the restart, as Shaq Coulthirst prodded home after Whitely saw his shot parried into the striker’s path. Balanta clawed a goal back for the hosts with 15 minutes left to play, with his glancing header leaving the visiting ‘keeper with no chance.

And the former Boreham Wood attacker completed the comeback with two minutes left in the game, hammering his volley into the top corner of the net.

After an even start to the game, the Daggers thought they had grabbed the lead in the fourth minute. Following Matt Robinson’s header which crashed against the crossbar, McCallum was on hand to pounce on the rebound, hammering the ball home, only for the referee to judge the striker had fouled his marker. The hosts’ fast start looked set to continue in the ninth minute, as a ball into the box was partially cleared by the Boreham Wood defence, before Balanta powered his effort from outside the box narrowly over the crossbar.

The visitors were struggling to deal with the Daggers’ intensity, as the defence was almost beaten after 14 minutes, this time through Dean Rance, who was unfortunate to get underneath his shot, sending it inches off target.

Twenty minutes on the clock and if anyone was going to open the scoring, it was going to be the hosts, as McCallum intercepted a wayward defensive pass before trying his luck on goal from range, with the ‘keeper off his line. Unfortunately, the ball just wouldn’t dip, as it sailed over.

However, Luke Garrard’s men were still proving to be dangerous, as they worked their way into the Daggers’ penalty area in the 26th minute. With Krystian Pearce shaping to shoot, McCallum put in a brilliant challenge to deflect the ball behind for a corner.

Just past the half hour mark, Balanta was presented with a golden chance to hand Dagenham a well-deserved lead, latching on to a long ball as he broke clean through on goal.

Having dominated large spells of the first half, the hosts found themselves a goal down just before the break, with Gus Mafuta wriggling into the box, before sending the ball across the face of goal. Catching the home defence unaware, Whitely snuck in at the far post to prod home from all of a yard out.

Straight after the restart, Whitely was once again at the heart of the Boreham Wood attack, creating their second goal of the game. Bursting into the box, his attempt was parried into the path of Coulthirst, who had the goal gaping as he passed the ball into the back of the net.

That goal seemed to knock the wind out of the sails of Daryl McMahon’s men, with the Wood looking the more likely to add to their tally as the game entered the final 30 minutes. However, in the 73rd minute, having struggled to create any real chance in the second half, the Daggers had a goal back through the dangerous Balanta, whose glancing header drifted into the far corner of the net, leaving Ashmore rooted to the spot. Time was running out for McMahon’s men, as Boreham Wood looked to slow the game down. However, in the 88th minute, Balanta drew the Daggers level with a goal that his play deserved. After the ball was played into the box, Kenny Clark nodded the ball on to the Colombian, who hammered the ball into the top corner on the volley.

Having surrendered a two-goal lead, the Wood were then throwing wave after wave of attack at the Dagenham defence, almost breaching it in added time. With the visitors inside the penalty area, Tyrone Marsh teed the ball to Kane Smith, but the defender could only curl his shot agonisingly wide of the lefthand post, as the referee blew for full time moments later.

On the last two performances

I think for the last four or five games, we have been putting in solid performances. I think the two losses that we had, we deserved something out of the game, but we took the positives from it, which were the performances. The last couple of games have been the same. Getting the win at Solihull, and the clean sheet, was great.

On Saturday, there were a couple of sloppy goals but the performance was there again and we managed to come back and still get something.

On making a fast start/starting well

Its massive. I think all the boys have said it. I think the first goal in games is huge, especially in this league. If you get the first goal, usually you should be able to see the game out. I think has been our problem a little bit this season, not getting the first goal and teams doing that against us, even if we have had a few chances. Then we are struggling to get back into games or we are having to draw games where we really should be winning. I think another fast start tonight, where we take a few of our chances, should hopefully make it a comfortable game for us. On Maidenhead United

“The last four or five games is the sort of level we want to be at so if we can just keep doing that, then we should end up much higher up in the league table.” Sometimes the result you get at the end of a game does not accurately reflect what took place on the field of play. For some clubs, having the greater share of possession and creating the most chances might still end with defeat.

Since beating Bromley on February 16, the Daggers have put in a number of fine performances but have only managed to come away with a single win against Solihull Moors, a single draw against Boreham Wood, and two heart-breaking losses to Yeovil Town and Sutton United.

However, last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Boreham, which saw Daryl McMahon’s men fight from two goals behind in the final 15 minutes, showed that once again, the Daggers had been performing above their position in the league.

Last Saturday was not the first time this season that the Daggers have had to come from behind to claim something from a game, with performances against King’s Lynn Town, Chesterfield, Wrexham and Boreham Wood all proving that point.

But despite finding themselves behind far too often for their liking this season, the Daggers have often started games incredibly strongly, in particular the last five fixtures which could have easily produced more wins for the club. “I think the first goal in games is huge, especially in this league,” he explained. “I think that’s been our problem a little bit this season, not getting the first goal and teams doing that against us, even if we have had a few chances. Being part of a side that has pushed for promotion is nothing new to Elliott, who featured in Barnet’s play-off campaign last season, helping the Bees to the semifinals before losing to Notts County 2-0.

After such a strong campaign last season, the former Barnet defender admitted he did initially find things tough after signing with the Daggers at the beginning of the season. “I think I struggled at the start,” Johnson admitted.

COVIDTESTING THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME OF DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE

A recent development in our Covid-19 precautions has been the addition of regular twice weekly Covid-19 testing for playing staff, team management and key support staff at the club.

Players are required to attend the ground the day before each game for the short process, which is overseen by Club Covid Officer Tony Payne and the Physio, John Gowens. Although we have been testing for two weeks already, funding for the testing has now been arranged by the National League, in association with the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), which will enable the programme to run through to the end of the season. Our ground is now registered as an elite sports test site and all results are logged through the NHS track and trace portal. Throughout the season there have been a number of positive test results within the club, resulting in players and staff missing games, but for the last few weeks Covid-19 hasn't affected the squad. Tony Payne said: ”Although the infection rates are seeing a downturn, 30 THE DAGGER

Covid-19 is still active in the community. This process will help us to ensure that we don't contribute to further spreading of the virus. Daryl McMahon also said: "We obviously think that it's really important that everybody is getting tested regularly. At this level there's aspects of being part of the team that require a certain amount of proximity to each other, whether it's travel, training, or playing. “Regardless of the amount of social distancing precautions you put in place in these situations, there's still a

risk there. So the testing reduces that risk massively. "The players are allocated a time in the morning to come in, so they come in themselves, do their test, go back and wait in their cars for the results to come through, and so far it hasn't really effected training or anything so it's working pretty seamlessly. "It's such an important thing that we have to do now, because it's what will help to stamp out this virus, and we have to make sure we're doing everything we can to get it out of football and keep the ball rolling."

5 Unit Dogs were undertaking training exercises at the Chigwell Construction Stadium last week, giving their dogs some practice of sniffing out explosive devices in a stadium setting. The training, which took place over two days, saw a number of dogs and Unit staff members honing their skills in order to keep spectators safe at stadiums, and other large-scale events. PC Norbury said: "The stadium training days are really important for the dogs, because as you can imagine, we're not finding explosives daily! So it's really good for the dogs to be able to sniff out the types of items that we have them look for in real situations, and it gives us the opportunity to positively reinforce that behaviour with rewards when they do succeed in the training."
