The Daggers are again supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, this year with a limited-edition Daggers Poppy Scarf. In previous years the Club has supported the appeal with poppy crest badges and this year have moved to support the Legion further with the scarfs which are priced at £12.50 each and for every poppy scarf sold £2.50 will be donated to the RBL Poppy Appeal. We will be looking to bounce back from a poor result for us in Tuesday night. We as a group felt we had the game under control against Barnet, even with the ten men we had a fantastic chance to make it two nil and see the game through.

As we did on Saturday, we shot ourselves in the foot with individual errors that we have to eradicate as quickly as possible. In every season you go through a spell when every error gets punished and that’s been the case for us in first two games.

Our performances have warranted more than zero points! But we know internally we need to stick together, keep working hard and believe in our processes to get the results we know we can achieve. Tonight, will again be a difficult test against a very athletic Wealdstone team. Dean has done a

fantastic job in getting them promoted and I’m sure they will surprise a few teams this season with there never say die attitude and their undoubted quality. Harry Phipps will miss the season which is a huge blow to us. He has been excellent in preseason. We will help him recover both physically and mentally.

George Saunders has made huge strides in the last few weeks we hope to have him training this week. George is a player that will excite and create opportunities for us.

THESTONES I PROFILES Concord Rangers was ‘scouted’ by Dean Brennan when playing for Heybridge Swifts at Step 5 level. Jack later went on to captain Maldon & Tiptree. Kundai Benyu A product of Ipswich Town’s youth and academy set up, Kundai enjoyed a successful loan spell with Aldershot town of the National League in 2016/17 season. In 2017 he signed a 4-year contract with Celtic in Scotland but made just 1 appearance whilst being loaned out to Oldham and Helsingborg FC in Sweden, joining The Stones in the summer. Jack Cawley The powerful and stylish 27-year-old central defender recently joined from

Ashley Charles The talented midfielder is a product of Watford FC’s Academy. Initially loaned out to Barnet for the latter part of the 2018/19 season, Ashley was finally released by Watford and signed for the Stones in October of last year, starting 14 matches before the season ended. Alex Dyer Released by his first club Northampton Town in 2010, Alex joined The Stones and remained with the club until 2013, in the process making 117 appearances and scoring 32 goals from midfield. He moved on

to Welling United, before transferring to Swedish side Ostersunds. The player transferred to fellow Swedish top-level club Effsborg, before moving on loan to Lillistrom in Norway and finally Ad Talhamon in Kuwait. Michee Efete A product of Norwich City’s youth set up, Michee was released by the Championship club in 2018. Dean Brennan quickly stepped in to sign Michee in 2019 and the 23-year-old right back’s performances, both in defence and attack, became a crucial element of the team’s success. He scored eight goals – a magnificent return for a full back. Moses Emmanuel Moses burst on to the football scene as an 18 year old playing for Croydon Athletic where he scored 19 goals in

36 appearances. This alerted Brentford who signed him as a professional. His time with the Bees was short and his career really took root at Woking where he scored 29 goals in 110 appearances. Moses had a highly successful 2018/19 season at Billericay. The striker’s 4 goals in 8 games towards the end of last season helped the team lift the title.

Ross Lafayette

Adel Gafaiti The French born central defender has played in France, Algeria and Ukraine, but most recently in the West Country for Yeovil Town and Truro City. Danny Green Greenie was a big signing for Wealdstone at the start of the 2016/17 season having previously turned out for Dagenham & Redbridge, Maidenhead and Margate. With 170 starts for the team only skipper Jerome Okimo of the current squad has made more appearances for the Stones. Charlee Hughes The 24-year-old schoolteacher signed for Wealdstone during the close season having previously starred for Burnham Ramblers in the Essex Senior League, Brentwood and, most famously, Maldon & Tiptree. Charlee

contributed 29 goals for the Essex based side that held a 14 point lead at the top of the Isthmian League North Division before the season’s cancellation, and which defeated Leyton Orient in the FA Cup 1st Round Proper before losing narrowly to Newport County in the 2nd Round. Harry Isted Goalkeeper Harry started his career in Southampton’s youth set up before moving to Stoke City. Harry moved to Luton Town which remains his parent

club. Following short loan spells at Chesham United and Oxford City, he enjoyed a successful 10 match loan with The Stones last season standing in for the injured Aston Oxborough. Harry has been taken on loan, initially until January 2021. Ross Lafayette Ross was undoubtedly Wealdstone’s stellar signing for the 2019/20 campaign. Long established as a feared striker in top non-league football including spells at Welling, Aldershot and Sutton among others. After a brief loan spell at Maidstone United, Ross joined Billericay before joining Wealdstone. It turned into an Indian summer for the likeable player who scored at the rate of a goal every other game over the season. Dennon Lewis Local lad Dennon joined the Watford youth set up as an 11-year-old in 2008. Working his way through the Hornets academy, he signed a 3-year professional contract in 2015. During that three-year spell he joined Crawley Town in the EFL. At the end of the 3year contract Watford released Dennon who then signed for Falkirk in the Scottish Championship. On his return south of the border, and following a brief spell at Bromley,

THEMANAGER DEAN BRENNAN A native of Dublin, Dean has spent the vast majority of his footballing life in England, initially at Sheffield Wednesday before dropping into nonleague with a plethora of clubs over the following 10-year period. His most successful spells were with Hitchin Town, Grays Athletic with whom he won the FA Trophy in 2005 and Halesowen Town. While playing for Hemel Hempstead in 2010, chairman Dave Boggins invited the 29-year-old Brennan to take temporary charge of the team. The following season he moved to Dunstable Town as player/coach before Dave Boggins tempted him back to be

permanent manager at Hemel. Dean and his coach Stuart Maynard enjoyed great success at Hemel, achieving promotion to the Conference South through winning the Southern League Premier Division title by 10 points, and then flirting with promotion to the National League top division via the play-offs. They then took the reins at Billericay Town but were sacked less than four months later! A very short tenure at Kingstonian followed before Dean resigned to help in the recovery of his son who had been injured in a car collision. Following a break from the game Dean and Stuart were appointed at

Wealdstone. What they managed to bring together was a squad of hugely talented, mostly young, players and encouraged them to play expansive and attractive football that simply took the league by storm. DAGGERS.CO.UK

Dennon joined The Stones, where he enjoyed a fantastic resurgence in form. Making 33 league and cup appearances he scored 12 goals. Jacob Mendy 23-year-old Jacob spent much of his formative years in Spain where he was involved with the Atletico Madrid youth set up. On arrival back in England, Jacob initially linked up with Redhill but then moved to Carshalton Athletic where he enjoyed a successful season as part of The Robins’ side that gained promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division. Equally comfortable at left back or left wing, manager Brennan initially employed him in an attacking role before he was then moved to left back to cover for injuries where he settled down to make the position his own. Jerome Okimo Jerome spent the first seven years of his footballing life at Chalfont St Peter in the Spartan South Midlands and then Southern Leagues making 308 appearances - until being snapped up at the start of the 2013/14 season by Wealdstone when he played a starring role in Stones’ Ryman championshipwinning side. His performances earned him a move into full time football with Stevenage and then a drop back down into non-league with Braintree Town. Quiet, solid and talented, Jerome leads by example and with not far short of 200 appearances under his belt, is on the cusp of becoming a Wealdstone legend.

Danny Parish The 21-year-old forward spent his formative years at Brentford. Following his release from the Bees he had a short spell at Concord Rangers before a move to Thamesmead Town and Ashford United where he started banging in goals for fun. His move to Maldon & Tiptree last season brought him national recognition as part of the team that enjoyed a long and exciting run in the FA Cup and where the pacey 08 THE DAGGER

and direct forward scored 30 goals in 36 appearances. Michael Phillips South London lad Michael spent his formative footballing years at Crystal Palace. Released by Palace in 2018, Michael signed for National League club Maidstone. Despite the team suffering relegation he was unexpectedly released, and The Stones moved quickly to secure him on contract before the start of last season. It proved to be an inspired signing. Michael is a versatile footballer who can play in a variety of midfield or defensive positions, although his favoured one is in central midfield. Jorome Slew A former Sheffield United youth team player, the young Slew was loaned out to Mikleover and Matlock Town before his release from Bramall Lane, following which he enjoyed short stints at Goole, Chester and North Ferriby. On moving South he joined Wealdstone early in the 2018/19 season but rarely featured, and finally found his goalscoring touch at Maldon & Tiptree. On re-signing for The Stones, Jerome completed the link up with his fellow Maldon sharpshooters Dan Parish and Charlee Hughes. Connor Smith Young Irishman Connor, along with fellow Watford Academy player Britt Assombalonga, joined Stones on loan in September 2011 and the pair played major roles in helping the team reach the FA Challenge Trophy semi-finals that season. Following that five-month stint, Connor returned to Watford where he signed his first professional contract but was unable to establish himself as a regular in the first team. He dropped into non-league at the start of the 2018/19 season with Boreham Wood but Dean Brennan brought him to Wealdstone as one of his first signings last year.

Connor Stevens Connor spent 10 years in Watford’s youth and academy before his release from the Vicarage Road club in the summer of 2018, Wealdstone quickly snaffling his signature, and there is no doubt he quickly matured into one of the finest centre backs in the National League South. His rock-solid central defensive partnership with skipper Jerome Okimo helped see him selected for the England C team squad at the end of the 2018-19 season. Charlie Wakefield The 22-year-old left winger began his footballing career with Brighton & Hove Albion before moving on to be a part of Chelsea’s successful academy set up for 8 years. Joining Coventry City in January 2018, Charlie’s progress was halted by both injury and illness. Released by the Sky Blues Charlie is hoping to rebuild his career with The Stones. Jay Williams Signed during the close season, Jay spent six years progressing through the academy at Northampton Town before his release in the summer after making 17 first team appearances for the Cobblers over two seasons. Last season Jay spent time on loan at National League North side Kettering and is comfortable playing either as a central defender or performing the defensive holding role in midfield. Dan Wishart Dan progressed through the ranks of his local club Hayes & Yeading, initially playing over 100 first team matches for them before his transfer to Alfreton Town in 2013. He then signed a two-year contract with Sutton United, moving up the ladder to Forest Green Rovers where he played in the EFL before returning to Sutton and then Maidstone United, from whom Dean Brennan signed him. Equally at home at wing back and left back, Dan is a former England C international and a powerful and experienced player.

I think that there was a definite improvement on Tuesday evening from Saturday’s defeat against FC Halifax Town. We looked more solid as a unit and doing well until the sending off, which completely changed the match in my opinion.

The match was all about moments, if Cal’s (Callum Reynolds) effort that hit the bar goes in at 1-0, then it’s a different game. We’ve been back out there working hard on the training ground on Thursday & Friday, and as a squad, we are determined to get our first win on the board this evening. We know that if we cut out those individual errors that have plagued us during the opening two games, then we have every chance of walking away with all three points. 10 THE DAGGER

Wealdstone will arrive here full of confidence off the back of a promotion, I know that having experienced promotion into the National League as a player.

We’ve looked at their previous league match and footage from preseason so we know what sort of team we’re up against, and we know we will have to be focused and ready to battle for every ball. DAGGERS ANNOUNCE STREAMING SERVICE FOR THE 2020/21 SEASON

Whilst you’re watching the match, a live scoreboard will be on display to give you that high-quality broadcast feel and our sponsors and partners will be visible onscreen or will pop-up during the match.

The club will be live streaming all of our Vanarama National League matches at The Chigwell Construction Stadium for the 2020/21 season. Following on from the announcement that all football at our level will be required to be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future, the club has been working very hard over the past few weeks to install a bespoke streaming service for our supporters. Daggers fans will be able to enjoy all of the action from the comfort of their own home all over the world as the Vanarama National League begins behind closed doors. The live streaming site is: live.daggers.co.uk We will be offering a virtual season ticket to all supporters at the price of £9.99 per match, with arrangements for season ticket holders having been advised, which you can read on our website. For any away matches, supporters will need to purchase their streaming passes directly from the home side. We have installed a state-of-the-art camera that features artificial intelligence ball-tracking technology.

This camera (pictured) is situated on the half-way line for the best seat in the house and uses four lenses to make sure every inch of the pitch is covered. The stream will be available in HD 1080p resolution for a crisp picture and can be viewed on your computer, smartphone, or tablet. You will also have the ability to use Google Chrome Cast to view the live stream on your TV. There are also a number of adapters that fans can purchase to be able to get the picture from their tablet or PC onto a TV screen. The live stream will include live commentary from our long-standing commentator, James Glass (Glassy), who will be adding his voice to the action as it unfolds.

It is hoped that the majority of National League clubs will be able to offer a streaming service throughout the season, but not all clubs are not at the same stage with their service as we are. We have teamed up with two very experienced providers to bring you this fantastic service. Following the success of Sportradar’s streaming platform through which fans could watch the 2019/20 National League Play-Offs, they were the obvious choice to enable fans to subscribe and watch matches for this coming season whilst restrictions remain in place on attending matches in person. All video production for the streaming platform will be provided by Pixellot, using their automatic cameras. THE DAGGERS PLAYED HOST TO THE BEES IN OUR FIRST HOME MATCH OF THE 2020/21 VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE SEASON WITH BARNET COMING FROM BEHIND TO WIN THE MATCH. It was Barnet who had the first chance of the match, following a corner the ball fell kindly at the back post but the Barnet player couldn’t find a way past Elliot Justham who produced a brilliant save early on.

Skipper Kenny Clark had to be on hand to produce a block after Eliott Richards looked to be bearing down on goal, the away side on top in the early stages. The Daggers created two decent openings in quick succession, first Sam Deering nearly managed to run clear at the back post before a Barnet defender was able to get a toe on the ball. Then Mitch Brundle worked his way into the box before his shot was blocked and into the hands of Scott Loach.

Daryl McMahon’s side did find the opener shortly after, a dangerous corner from Myles Weston was flicked home by Angelo Balanta for our first goal of the new campaign, coming on the half-hour mark. Barnet had a great chance to equalise through Wesley Fonguck, the Barnet forward was one-on-one with Justham but could only fire straight at the goalkeeper.

A big chance for Brundle followed, after a flick-on from Paul McCallum the

midfielder ran from deep into the box but slipped at the vital moment before managing to get a shot away. .

Deering had the first chance of the second period, the ball dropping to the midfielder on the edge of the box, but his shot was high and wide. Just before the hour mark, after heading the ball out of play and being judged to have wasted time by the referee, leaving the home side down to ten-men for the remaining half an hour.

There were big shouts from the Daggers players for a penalty after the ball appeared to hit a Barnet player’s arm in the box, but the referee was unmoved.

Callum Reynolds came close to a second for the home side after Loach had made a great save the ball dropped to the centreback who smacked his effort against the bar. With five minutes to go Barnet were awarded a penalty after Elliot Johnson handled in the area. JJ Hooper despatched to bring the game level.

The Bees managed to take advantage of their extra man and found another goal soon after, Richards the goal scorer with a great strike from outside the area.

This week, we chat with Daggers No.1 Elliot Justham, who gives his thoughts on the start to the season and this evening’s match. The shot-stopper started off by giving his assessment on the opening two fixtures of the new campaign

“I don’t think we deserve to have zero points, however, I certainly don’t think we’ve been at the levels that we set in pre-season and the levels that the staff and ourselves as players have set and expect in the first two games. It’s not time to press the panic button and start over analysing, of course we have to look at what’s been going wrong but we know what we’ve got in the building and along with the staff we can fix it and that starts with Wealdstone tonight. “I think Tuesday was a shock, we felt like we were in control and so to lose the game was very disheartening for the boys. We haven’t got time to dwell on it, so we have to dissect the game and go over what’s happened.

“It’s been individual errors that have cost us, and that’s not a personal attack on those who have made them, it’s the facts! People are not deliberately making mistakes, its part and parcel of football, but the less mistakes we make the easier we will make it for ourselves because we are shooting ourselves in the foot. “ Justham has faced two penalties so far this term and came very close to keeping the spot kick against Barnet out of his own net.

“We have a great analyst team with Jack (Wilson) and then you have Glen (Johnson) and Gritty (Steve Gritt) who do their homework on penalties as well. Ultimately, I feel I should have saved that on Tuesday night, it’s a penalty and people think he should score but I set my own standards and the next penalty I believe I’ll save, and I have to believe that. When you set yourself standards you expect to save, and you may call it arrogance, but I see it as confidence. “ Pre-season was a strange one for the Daggers, as they adapted to ‘the new normal.’

“Pre-season was very different to what we’re used to. We all discussed it as a group and even the players said

it’s just nice to be back out there. People were talking about whether it would ever come back and you hear things but the main thing it, speaking to the gaffer and the management, they’re always positive.

“When you go without football for 6 months its part of what we do, we’re very fortunate, we enjoy our jobs and we’re lucky to be in our jobs but when you’re not playing football it doesn’t feel like you’re working.” The goalkeeping unit at the Daggers remains the same for the 2020/21 season. Josh Strizovic signed on for another season and Glen Johnson continues as Goalkeeping Coach.

“I have a great relationship with Josh and Glen, we’re a good little unit! I know I’m the one playing, but Glen and Josh are always pushing me and it’s a big part of the process, we’re all in it together for each other. We’re always looking to update and change what we do and hopefully we can continue to work hard and get results,” he said.

The 30-year-old looks ahead to this evening’s challenge, as we welcome National League new boys, Wealdstone.

“I know a few of their players and their manager as well, they will be a good side. It’s also a good game for us as well and we will need to do our homework on them as I’m sure they will do on us, but at the moment we have to focus on ourselves. Of course, we can look at Wealdstone and try to look at where we can get at them and counter act their strengths, but we’ve got to really focus on ourselves at the moment because that’s what’s killing us at the moment. “If we get things right we haven’t got to worry who we’re playing, if we’re playing well we believe we can beat anyone in this league whether that’s Wealdstone, Notts County, Barnet or whoever it may be on the day, if we’re right we believe we can win,” he added.

Notts County have terminated the contract of midfielder Casper Sloth by mutual consent. The 28-year-old Danish international joined County from Motherwell in August but suffered an injury in pre-season and did not play in Saturday's defeat at Dover.

Barnet have signed former QPR winger Michael Petrasso on a seasonlong loan deal from Canadian Premier League side York9 FC. The 25-yearold Canada international made 13 appearances for the R's and had loan spells at Oldham, Coventry, Leyton Orient and Notts County before moving to Montreal Impact in January 2018. Millwall centre-back Harry Ransom will stay on loan at Dover Athletic until 29 December. The 21-year-old made his debut for Dover on Saturday when he scored in the last minute to secure a 1-0 win over Notts County on the opening day of the season. Torquay United have added three young players from EFL clubs on onemonth loan deals. AFC Bournemouth's 20-year-old defender Sam Sherring, Plymouth Argyle midfielder Adam Randell, 20 and Bristol City's 19-year-old forward Louis Britton have all joined Gary Johnson's squad.

HERE WE go again. This week, Boris Johnson urged people to go back to the cinemas following the sad decision of Cineworld to temporarily close its 127 theatres across the UK, affecting 45,000 jobs. It comes at the end of a damning week for the film industry with the launch of the forthcoming James Bond film No Time To Die being put back to 2021.

Sadly, it’s an all-too familiar story in these strange Covid times, bearing a striking comparison to the football industry, which too has been left to pick up the pieces from the effects of the global pandemic.

So, the question remains then Boris, if you are pleading with people to go back to watching films in the cinema - a small, enclosed arena with very little room for manoeuvre or ventilation – then why can’t fans return to football in a much larger, outdoor, socially-distanced environment?

Last Saturday, 15 Vue Cinemas – Cineworld’s main market rival – showed live Premier League matches, well attended by fans. How can you watch football in a cinema but not an open-air stadium? That’s madness. Quite frankly, I’m amazed – and mightily relieved - that more proud, well-established football clubs haven’t fallen foul to these testing Covid times and credit for that lies with the people who work tirelessly – usually without financial reward – to keep our clubs alive.

But, with a second Coronavirus wave threatening to kick in and tougher restrictions gradually being put in place, there comes a point when something has to give, as Cineworld have shown. Last week’s £10m Government bailout to the National League at least papers over the cracks for a few months but, at the time of writing this, clubs are still waiting for news of their reimbursements almost a week on and with their season already underway.

Indeed, poor communication throughout has been a huge issue during this uncertain summer and that’s something that needs to be addressed in any future Covid post mortem. Personally, I’m still dismayed by a lack of assistance, and greed sometimes, of the mega-rich Premier League and its member clubs during this crisis. No fewer than six players in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this week’s friendly with Wales and Nations League games against Belgium and Denmark boast a Non-League background. Doesn’t that show that football at this level is impacting higher up the Pyramid? In the week when Macclesfield Town were wound up by the High Court for debts totalling £500,000, Chelsea were spending £22 million for a replacement goalkeeper.

A couple of weeks later, Arsenal then opted to severely damage their once proud community ties by dumping its much-loved mascot Gunnersaurus - for the sake of £120-a-week - before then spending £45 million on Thomas Partey. Obviously, I’m not suggesting bailouts of those proportions but what a gesture it would be from the 20 Premier League clubs if they put aside, say, £1 million each, to strengthen their community ties when it is needed most and keep their local clubs alive? Cineworld’s demise is a worrying turn of events for the entertainment industry, of which sport plays a significant part. Agreed, Boris, let us support our cinemas, theatres and music venues – socially distanced, of course – but how about including football stadiums in that too?

Dagenham & Redbridge Women and Girls FC Over the last three years the Daggers Trust, funded by the National League Trust, the Football Association, the Football Foundation and others, has developed a female section with teams playing in the Essex County Women's and Girls' Leagues. The leagues kicked off in late September and a variety of opportunities exist for young women and girls to participate in football through the Trust, either as a member of a team or just for fun. The Daggers girls' teams are currently training every Wednesday evening at Goals Dagenham and this week was no exception, as the pictures show. The season kicked off on Sunday 20th September with wins for both the under 13s and under 15s in their first games of the 20-21 season. The U13s were at home against Braintree winning 4-0 and the U15s beat Tigers away 3-2. Following on from the success of the two other Daggers Girls' teams in their

opening matches, the Under 12 team began their season with a 7-2 home win against Springfield Girls at May and Bakers on Sunday 27th, but unfortunately the other two teams couldn't repeat their achievements of the previous weekend, both losing narrowly at home. The Under 13s went down 2-1 to Great Danes and the Under 15's lost 4-2 to Aveley Girls. Last weekend, on a very wet and windy afternoon, the Under 12 team made it two wins from two, as they beat Lakeside Girls 1-0 away from home. Tomorrow they are due to play at Home against Tigers Girls U12 Black, kicking off at 2pm. In the table, Leigh Ramblers are on top with six points. They too have won both their games but

have a superior goal difference. Tigers are in third place, also on six points but they have played three games, winning two and losing one. The Under 13 team played away to Grays Athletic U13 Black and went down 3-0. The girls are hoping to bounce back against Baddow Spartak Pumas at home tomorrow, kicking off at 2pm. The Under 15 team's game against St Clere's Girls was scheduled to be played at May & Bakers, but the game was called off on Sunday morning because of the condition of the pitch after all the heavy rain. The U15s are not scheduled to play this weekend. Female football fostering friendship, fun and fitness. DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE FC AWARDEDFUNDINGTOHELPTHEMRETURNTOACTION Great news for football in Dagenham today, as Dagenham & Redbridge FC are celebrating receiving funding from the Premier League to help them prepare for the restart of football. The Matchday Support Fund grant will help Dagenham & Redbridge put in place measures that will enable the start of the 2020/21 season given the challenges caused by COVID-19. The Daggers will be using this money for such things as setting up their streaming service and measures to make the ground Covid secure for players and staff. The Matchday Support Fund is managed by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF), which is financed by the

Premier League and supports non-league and Women’s Football Pyramid clubs with the cost of improvements to their grounds. The Matchday Support Fund follows the recent Pitch and Club Preparation Funds, which saw £8.7m in grants awarded by the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation to prepare the country’s playing surfaces and facilities for the return of football. Daggers Managing Director, Stephen Thompson, said: "The matchday support grant is a great help to not only us but all the clubs eligible for this grant throughout the non-league pyramid and we are extremely grateful for the support.”
