F RO M THE MANAGER
DARYL McMAHON
Good evening everyone from the Chigwell Construction Stadium. I hope you are all keeping safe and well. I would like to wish a warm welcome to Ian Culverhouse, his staff and his squad ahead of today’s game. On Stockport County defeat:
Our performance was good for the majority of the game. I think we had a 15-minute spell after half time when we shot ourselves in the foot, but in terms of the overall performance, I thought it was a big improvement on last Saturday. The first half we were a lot better with the ball and we moved it around really well. I think the performance on Tuesday definitely gives us something to build on going into the next game. On squad fitness:
I thought Robbo played well coming into the squad. He tired near the end but for the first 70 minutes, I thought that he was very good. He did some excellent stuff with the ball and was a big part of that first half when we had some good moments.
Not only Robbo as Sam (Deering) has come back in after a long time out, Mitch Brundle played his first game back since Torquay and Joey Jones came into the team after not playing since November.
Sadly, Joey’s hamstring was tight again, so he had to come off at half time against Stockport. It’s frustrating, for Joey in particular, who has had a long time out with what seems to be a
nothing injury really. It’s not anything serious but it is taking a long time to heal from so it is something that is really frustrating.
You could see on Tuesday, he is a high-end player at this level, and he was superb but if he is out again then it gives someone else an opportunity to step up and perform. On this afternoon’s opponents
King’s Lynn have had a good start to the season after being promoted into the division. Their manager Ian Culverhouse is someone who I know well as he was the manager when I first joined Leyton Orient. Some of the players they have were at Cambridge United when I was playing there many moons ago, so I am looking forward to seeing them.
We are a team that has been trying to develop across the season. Since we got together, for various different reasons, we have not been able to get to where we want to be yet, but it is not for the want of trying.
We want to hit the level we can hit, the only challenge we are in is the challenge to be the best version of what we can be at Dagenham.
Enjoy the game,
Daryl

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME FROM THE CHIGWELL CONSTRUCTION STADIUM
Firstly, I want to look back on Tuesday’s defeat. It wasn’t a bad performance; I think we restricted them to very little.
was an improvement on Saturday’s defeat to Sutton in the Trophy.
Their opening goal came from a rebound and the second came from a great touch and finish from outside the area. Other than that, I don’t think Elliot (Justham) had another save to make in the game.
Today is a massive game and a chance to put the two defeats behind us. Coming into the match, both teams are level on points, so it’s an important fixture to get a reaction. Our league form hasn’t been too bad, but we do need to bounce back after a defeat.
We’re disappointed that we weren’t able to cause them more problems going forward. I think the final score line doesn’t truly reflect how the game went but equally we didn’t do enough to win the game. After conceding the first goal, we had to open up and try and get back into the game, which led to their second which they scored on the counterattack. It would have been nice to have got a better result against a strong side who I’m sure will be in and amongst it at the end of the season, but overall, I think the performance 10 THE DAGGER

King’s Lynn have brought in some decent players and you will always be on a high after back-to-back promotions. They like to pass the ball around and try to play through you, so we need to make sure we’re ready for that today. We’re taking each game as it comes, and we know that the league table is very tight at the moment. We want to get back to winning ways today, so hopefully we can do that out on the pitch. a spectacular save from the Daggers number one. Five minutes later, Daryl McMahon’s men had an excellent opportunity of their own, when a Jones’ teasing cross from the righthand side almost finds Liam Gordon at the far post, with the defender unable to convert.
Just before the break, Stockport almost broke through the stubborn Daggers defence when excellent link up play freed Minihan inside the penalty area, but a defender was able to hack the ball clear, enabling Balanta to break free on goal, only for Ben Hinchcliffe to smother the ball on the edge of his area.

Second half strikes from Richie Bennett and Alex Reid inflicted defeat on the Daggers as they were beaten 0-2 by Stockport County.
After an evenly contested first half, County struck early in the second, with Richie Bennett firing home from close range. Not long after, Reid scored a well-taken second, leaving the Daggers with a mountain to climb to get back into the game.
Angelo Balanta had two late efforts which almost gave Dagenham hope of getting something out of the game, but promotion chasing Stockport managed to hold on to inflict the Daggers first league defeat in three games.
The visitors began brightly and after only three minutes, they had the ball in the back of the net, following a deeply swung corner, only for the referee to blow for foul in the build-up. But the Daggers responded well, with Angelo Balanta’s left-footed volley drifting over the crossbar after 12 minutes of play.

The hosts were growing into the game and in the 19th minute, Joey Jones surged down the right-hand side, before picking Paul McCallum out at the far post with a deep cross. From a difficult angle, the forward could only head the ball inches over the bar. However, Justham needed to remain vigilant at the other end, with the Daggers defending multiple corners. The third of which, taken by top scorer John Rooney in the 22nd minute, looked destined for the back of the net, but for

Whatever Jim Gannon had said to his players at the break must have worked as the visitors were comfortably controlling play in the middle of the pitch. And after five minutes, the visitors made the breakthrough when a powerful effort from Rooney was parried by Justham, before Bennett fired home from close range.
The Daggers were struggling to get a foot hold in the second period and in the 62nd minute, Stockport forward Reid closed Justham down to block a goal kick, only to see the ball dribble agonisingly wide. In an effort to get back into the game, McMahon brought Scott Wilson and Darren McQueen on, in place of Gordon and Mitch Brundle. However, they soon found themselves two goals behind, courtesy of a well taken shot from Reid, who beat Justham from just outside the area in the 67th minute.
With less than 20 minutes to play, substitute McQueen started to show his quality, beating his man down the right-hand side, but his low cross was cut out by Liam Hogan before being cleared to safety.
Balanta was the next Dagger to try his luck at Hinchcliffe’s goal in the 82nd minute, but after working his way into space on the edge of the area, his ferocious effort was skewed wide of the upright. Two minutes later, Balanta was once again in the thick of the action, as Stockport looked to slow the game down and secure the three points, with his low curled shot drifting into the arms of the Stockport shot stopper.
Dagenham almost nicked a goal right at the death, as Matt Robinson’s excellent cross found a teammate at the far post, but Hinchliffe was alert to make a fine save.
But the Hatters were able to see the game out and secure all three points.

ELLIOT JUSTHAM
Elliot Justham made his 150th appearance for the Club in our match v Stockport County on Tuesday evening.
The 30-year-old has been an important part of the squad ever since signing back in May 2016, showing on numerous occasions that he is one of the best goalkeepers outside of the Football League. The Daggers number one made 43 appearances in his first season for the Club back in the 16/17 campaign, keeping 16 clean sheets as the Daggers finished in the play-offs. Unfortunately, in his second season injury prevented him from playing, missing the season before making a comeback just in time for the next campaign. The 18/19 season saw Justham miss only one game in the National League, making 48 appearances in all competitions with a further 11 clean sheets to his name. Last season saw a further 39 games played along with 9 more clean sheets in a campaign where he had played every game up until the season was cut short. So far this season Justham has made 20 appearances, with a further seven clean sheets. We spoke to Elliot about reaching the 150apperance mark: “I’m absolutely delighted to hit 150 appearances for the club. When I signed here under John Still in 2016, I came with the aim of helping to get this club into the Football League. “We came close in the first season, where we lost to Forest Green, I was injured for the second season and it’s been a rebuild at the football club ever since. It’s been a rollercoaster, but it’s one I’ve enjoyed immensely and I’m grateful to the club and hoping it can continue for a long time. “I’m fully focused on helping to get the club where I think it belongs, which is in the Football League and hopefully sooner rather than later. I enjoy my football at this club and I’ve always felt wanted here, especially the last couple of years and it’s a privilege to play my football here.” Best Daggers Moment? “On a personal level, I’d have to say the match against AFC Fylde on the 17th November 2018. I’d come straight from the hospital after my wife had given birth
to my daughter at 1pm and we won 2-1 and I had a decent game! “As a Club, I think the way we battled to stay up during the 18/19 season is probably the best. After pretty much being bottom going into October, I thought we might not be able to do it, but Peter Taylor hammered home that our only aim was to stay up, and thankfully we did that. “Another highlight is the comeback up at Hartlepool that year. It’s a horrible place to play and we managed to turn it around right at the end. We all went out on our Christmas Do after that and we were buzzing!” Best Player You’ve Played With Here? “There are two players that I’ll name, but they’re both for different reasons. Luke Guttridge is the first player. He helped me learn the ropes of being a pro. He was an older head and showed me the way, how to act and how to be in certain situations. He was also fantastic on the ball, even as he was getting older. “Angelo Balanta is another one, his ability is frightening.” Looking Back At Tuesday’s Defeat: “We were at it in the first half against Stockport and were able to nullify them and they created very little. “Second half, we didn’t come out as strong and we conceded a soft goal. I could have done better and should have parried it into a better area. The goal deflated us a little bit and then they got the second at a good time and they saw the game out well. Respect to them, they’re a good team but we need to learn from it and go again today. “ This Afternoon: “King’s Lynn have done well since the came up. I know Ian Culverhouse well; he’s been here at Dagenham when I was, and he helped me out a lot. There isn’t an easy game in this league as I always say, but we’re confident and want to come out fighting and get the win. “ Here’s hoping for many more clean sheets in the future!

50-UP
Luke Croll made his 50th appearance for the Club in our match v Stockport County on Tuesday evening. The 26-year-old joined in July 2019 on an initial one-year contract after leaving Exeter City.
Last season Luke made 31 appearances in all competitions showing his versatility playing at both centre back and leftback helping the side to nine clean sheets.
doesn’t matter now how we played in our last game or how Kings Lynn played, we just need to make sure that we outperform them on the day and come out victorious.
This season, Croll has made a further 19 appearances to date, missing only one match through suspension, with six clean sheets so far this campaign.
‘I don’t feel that in all the games we have lost, that we have played bad but there have been a few games that we have won where we had to dig in to get the result. I believe that as long as we get the win on the board, I feel like points are the most important thing right now. Everybody wants to play well in every game, but points are all that matters in the league. ‘
We spoke to Luke about reaching the 50-apperance mark for the Club and his time with the Daggers to date: “It would have been nicer if the landmark was hit on the back of the win! I have enjoyed my time at the club so far; I would have liked to have been able to get to number 50 a little earlier, but it is nice to know that I have hit that milestone and hopefully I am able to get many more. “At the minute we are not where we hoped to be when I signed, and I am part of a team that needs to turn it around. I think that we use the word “disappointing” too often when it comes to interviews and hopefully, we can turn our season around and better things are ahead for the Club. “In terms of hitting the 50-appearance mark, I gave myself a goal last season to play 40 games, which didn’t happen due to the season being cut short, but I always knew that if I was given a run of games that I would be fine. “I believe that being in and out of a team in the early stages of my career did not help me as I would struggle to maintain a level of fitness. Since joining, I have been able to play consistently which has helped and I feel confident that I am able to play for a full season now and I understand my body a lot more than when I was with Exeter. To reach 50 games is a nice achievement but I do want to hit higher numbers.” Looking ahead to today’s match against Kings Lynn Town and getting back to winning ways: “We can always talk about the last match or any previous matches, but the next game is always the most important. “I was watching a game during the week where they were talking about Norwich playing lovely football last season when they came into the Premier League, but they ended up getting relegated. We do not want to be a team that plays well but doesn’t get the points to go with the football, once we start getting the points we can worry about the football. “There is a long way still to go but we are in January, we need to make sure that we stick together, and remember that it is about us, making sure we do our jobs, making sure we outperform the other teams.” Favourite Daggers Memory: “I would say game wise, Torquay United away from this season because of the manner in which we performed that day, most of the game with ten-men. I did really enjoy that game and that is the sort of character that we are going to need to play with in every game to ensure we are at the top end of the table. Best player played with at the Club: “I think that consistently it has to be Elliot Justham, in terms of in my overall time here he has been the most consistent. As an outfield player I would say Angelo Balanta, as he is technically very, very good. You can see in training day in, day out that he is a great player. So, it would have to be between them two for the best player.” DAGGERS.CO.UK
