F RO M THE MANAGER

DARYL McMAHON

Good afternoon everyone from the Chigwell Construction Stadium, I hope you are all keeping safe and well. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to Ben Strevens and his backroom staff ahead of this evening’s game. On Angelo Balanta winning Player of the Month…

Ang has been terrific – particularly since Christmas. We’ve managed to get him on the pitch consistently now, whereas before we had a lot of breaks with the COVID situation, and he’s had a couple injuries. This is the most consistent run Ang has had and he’s really shown his qualities. He’s one of our more experienced players and he’s really come to the fore over the last few weeks, taking on responsibility with younger players around him, and he’s been excellent for us. On Bromley defeat…

I thought large parts of our play against Bromley were outstanding. It’ll be another game where we look at the stats, and the number of chances we created, and it’ll be into the 20s again, but we’ve not been able to score. I’d say that game sums up our season in the fact we’re not where we want to be, but the performance again was very good. On the experienced players in the squad…

You always call on your more experienced players over the course of the season. We’re creating more than enough to win games of

football, it’s just about scoring goals for us and anybody who watches us, I’m sure can see that. No doubt about it, we will get where we want to be. We can’t get too despondent – we need to keep working on the path we’re on, keep working hard and keep battling. On Eastleigh…

We were poor earlier in the season when we faced Eastleigh – we conceded from a corner and two penalties. That was probably a game in which following the result, we made a lot of changes to give us more energy and more legs in the team. We know Eastleigh are a good side, they’re having a good season.

They’ve brought in Adam Marriott who I know is a great player. He was in the youth team at Cambridge United when I was a player there, so I know him really well and I know he’s got a fantastic record in non-league football. Technically, he’s a good player, the same as Ben House who’s had a very good season, so we’ll have to control their front-line, but I want us to be affecting their backline.

As always, thank you for your continued support and I hope you enjoy the game!

THE OPPOSITION

EASTLEIGH THESPITFIRESI MEET THE TEAM

Name – Ben Strevens Position – Manager After a brief five games as interim manager, Strevens was named permanent Eastleigh boss in November 2018. Strevens played over 100 times for the Spitfires as a player and his talent on the field has continued off it, as he was successful in taking Eastleigh to the National League play-off semi-final in his first season. The manager’s playing days were spent with 11 different clubs across 19 years, and he is now entering his second full season in charge at the Silverlake. Name – Joe McDonnell Squad number - 1 McDonnell is a new arrival for the 2020/21 season from fellow National League side Notts County. The 26-year-old also holds Football League experience with AFC Wimbledon, where he played for five and a half years before his move to the Magpies. Joe began his footballing career at Basingstoke Town under Jason Bristow, who is now Assistant Manager at Eastleigh, and the pair have reunited at the Spitfires this season. 06 THE DAGGER

I 13.04.21 V EASTLEIGH

Name – Joe Partington Squad number - 2 Partington re-signed for Eastleigh in 2019 following his release from Bristol Rovers. In a two-year stay, he made 63 appearances with the League One club. He began his career with Portsmouth before spending four years with Bournemouth. After brief loan spells with Eastbourne and Aldershot Town, Partington joined Eastleigh on a free transfer from the Cherries. The experienced defender went on to win the Spitfires’ Player of the Year in the 2015/2016 season and scored the opener in Eastleigh’s 3-2 loss against Bolton in the 2016 FA Cup third round. He has been capped at youth level by Wales, making 21 appearances from the U17 to U21 age groups. Name – Michael Green Squad number - 3 Club legend and fan favourite Michael Green holds the most Spitfires appearances in the current squad, and has the fifth-highest appearances in the club’s history. Green was signed from Port Vale in 2011 and has since played more than

370 games for the club. He was part of the side that won promotion to the National League during the 2013/14 season. After briefly departing the club in February 2017, he returned just a matter of weeks later and has been at the Silverlake Stadium since. Green remains ever important to Eastleigh’s backline, accumulating 38 appearances on route to the National League play-off semi-final in 2018/19. Name – Cavaghn Miley Squad number - 4 Miley joined Eastleigh in 2017 from Jersey side St Pauls and has since appeared over 100 times for the club. Before moving to the Silverlake, he captained the Jersey Official Football Team whilst living on the island and caught the eye of the Spitfires. The central midfielder played in all bar four National League games in the 2018/19 run to the playoffs. He was also selected for England C side against the Football Association of Ireland Amateur International XI in 2018. Name – Pierce Bird Squad number - 5 Bird is another new addition for the

2020/21 season, the second summer signing from Notts County. The 21-year-old started his career at Dunkirk before moving to the Magpies, where he made 26 appearances at League Two and National League level. The centreback is also capped at international level, with four appearances for Northern Ireland’s U21s. Name – Andrew Boyce Squad number – 6 Signed from Grimsby Town in 2017, Boyce is a well-rounded and reliable defender. During the 2014/15 season whilst at Scunthorpe United, he gained promotion to League One. As well as plenty of National League experience, Boyce is no stranger to playing in higher divisions with over 50 appearances in League One and League Two combined. The centre-back joined the 100-club for Eastleigh as well last season and has scored four goals in his four seasons with the Spitfires. Name – Abdulai Baggie Squad number – 7 Baggie is another summer signing ahead of the 2020/21 season, having joined from National League South promotion winners, Weymouth. The 28-year-old winger has plenty of experience in both the football league and non-league, featuring for the likes of Tranmere Rovers, Stockport County, and Weymouth before joining the Spitfires. Baggie has represented England four times

at youth level, before making five appearances for the Sierra Leone national side. Name – Jack Payne Squad number – 8 Jack Payne became a permanent signing in 2019 from Ebbsfleet United, after spending a brief spell on loan at Eastleigh the season before. Payne is a very experienced midfielder, playing in the Championship, League One and League Two throughout his career thus far, with over 100 appearances for both Gillingham FC and Peterborough United. Payne’s excellent vision and delivery make him a threat when on set pieces, which he has demonstrated in his time at the club. Name – Dan Smith Squad number – 9 Dan Smith is an exciting new addition to the Spitfires in 2020/21. The young striker was signed from Isthmian League Premier Division side Bognor Regis after a prolific season scoring 16 goals in 19 games. With competition from teams higher up the football pyramid, Smith is an excellent capture for the club. The 21-year-old started his footballing journey in youth tournaments with Eastleigh, before joining Portsmouth in 2007 and rising through their academy, making his Pompey debut in the EFL Trophy in 2019. Name – Tyrone Barnett Squad number - 10 Barnett left Cheltenham Town in July 2019 to make the switch to Eastleigh.

The established Football League goal scorer joined the Spitfires with plenty of experience in his career, from the Championship with Peterborough United and Ipswich Town as well as spells in League One and League Two. The Posh paid Crawley Town over £1 million for his signature in 2012 and alongside current team-mate Jack Payne, the pair won the Football League Trophy together during the 2013/14 season. He continued his goalscoring records in his first season at the Spitfires, finishing as top scorer with 12 goals in last year’s National League campaign. Name – Callum Baughan Squad number – 12 Baughan signed his professional contract with Eastleigh in the summer of 2018, after graduating from the academy. The versatile young defender is highly thought of on and off the pitch at the club and has been unlucky with two successive ACL injuries that kept him side-lined for much of the past two campaigns. The young defender made his debut in a 3-1 win over Maidstone in 2018/19 and notched an assist on his first start in a 3-3 draw with Boreham Wood in the final game of that season. Name – Ross Flitney Squad number - 13 Experienced goalkeeper Ross Flitney has made over 200 appearances for the Spitfires in two spells at the club. He first featured between 2012 and 2016, then rejoined Eastleigh in 2017 from Bromley.

KEYMAN SAM SMART Squad number - 11 Talented young winger Sam Smart joined the Spitfires from Evo-Stick South side Basingstoke Town FC in July 2019 and has quickly become a fan favourite at the club. His electric pace and strong delivery make him a threat from the flanks, and his acrobatic goal celebrations are much loved by the Spitfires supporters. Smart made 38 appearances last season in all competitions for the club, scoring three goals.

EASTLEIGH SAM SMART

Despite being born in England, he has represented Scotland at U20 and U21 level. House has settled in well at the Silverlake as the club’s top scorer during the pre-season campaign and continued that form in the league. House’s five league goals in the first five games earned him the National League Player of the Month in October. Name – Danny Hollands Squad number - 19 Experienced centre-midfielder and club captain Danny Hollands has made over 100 appearances in his three years with the Spitfires. Hollands began his career with Chelsea and spent three years at Stamford Bridge from 2003.

Beginning his youth football career at Arsenal and then with Fulham, Flitney was understudy to Edwin Van der Sar in the Premier League from 2003 to 2005. In the latter stages of his career, Flitney is now combining his position with being the goalkeeper coach for the first team and academy goalkeepers. Name – Tom Bearwish Squad number – 14 Bearwish has been at the club since 2017, progressing his way through the youth system to the first team as a real example for Eastleigh Academy prospects. The forward has now made over 30 appearances for the first team, with last season proving to be a breakout campaign for ‘The Bear’. Bearwish bagged his first goal for the club with a last-minute winner against Torquay in September 2019 and increased his tally to four goals in all competitions during 2019/20. Name – Ben Scorey Squad number - 16 Another Eastleigh academy graduate, Ben Scorey was promoted from the youth setup in 2018/19 and made his Spitfires debut

in a 3-3 draw against Boreham Wood in April 2019. Scorey has featured four times in all competitions for the club, proving to be a versatile option in defence. Name – Joe Tomlinson Squad number - 17 Joe Tomlinson became the first Spitfires signing for the 2020/21 season after joining from Hungerford Town in June 2020. The 20-year-old defender is an exciting prospect, proving to be a talent both offensively and defensively at fullback. Tomlinson was Hungerford Town’s captain at just 19-years-old in the National League South last season and was voted the league’s Young Player of the Season. He already has over 70 non-league appearances, with seven goals and 15 assists, so far in his career. Name – Ben House Squad number - 18 Ben House is another summer signing ahead of the 2020/21 season. The 21-yearold striker joined the Spitfires following his release from Championship side, Reading. He spent 2019/20 on loan at fellow National League side Dagenham & Redbridge, scoring twice in 11 games.

He is well-known on the South Coast having played for Bournemouth and Portsmouth, whilst also featuring for the likes of Charlton Athletic, Gillingham FC, and Crewe Alexandra during his career. Hollands scored a wonder goal against Wrexham in the 2018/19 playoffs semifinals, before finding his form in front of goal last season, bagging 10 goals in the most prolific season of his career. Name – Ryan Hill Squad number - 20 Ryan Hill is another new addition to the Spitfires, signing during the start of the season on a permanent deal from Hampton & Richmond Borough. Hill started his career at Beaconsfield, before being scouted by Stoke City and joining their youth academy in 2017. After a season with the Potters, he moved to Hampton & Richmond to gain regular first-team football and impressed with his pace and trickery on the ball. Ryan’s 2019/20 season saw him score eight goals and get 14 assists in 33 games Name – Adam Marriott Squad Number – 22 The 29-year-old striker joined the Spitfires on a permanent transfer for the remainder of the season. Marriott boasts an impressive goal tally for King’s Lynn, scoring 65 times in 99 games – six of those coming this season in The National League. Beginning his youth career at Norwich, Marriott has had a successful time at the likes of Cambridge United, Cambridge City, and Lincoln City before joining the Linnets.

DEAN RAN CE

THE CAPTAIN

IT WAS A VERY DISAPPOINTING RESULT ON SATURDAY AFTER SUCH A GOOD PERFORMANCE AGAIN.

There really isn’t a lot more we could have done in terms of the performance other than putting one, or more, of our chances away. We just need to keep believing in what we are doing, and if we maintain the level of performances we have for the majority of the last couple of months then results will change.

The satisfying thing is that we are managing to create several very good chances in games, so the patterns of play to get into these dangerous areas is good, and it’s just then about picking the right final ball and relaxing in and around the box. We know we have players capable of scoring throughout the team, and we all need to chip in with goals to ease the pressure of just relying on the strikers, whether that be from midfield or a defender from set plays. As we have said all season, the games are coming thick and fast so we don’t have time to dwell on previous results for too long. We’ve got another opportunity to 10 THE DAGGER

I

start another little run tonight, so if we perform to the levels of Saturday I’m sure we will get the result it deserves. We are all keen to finish the season strongly. We played Eastleigh earlier on in the season and found it tough down there. We didn’t perform too well on the day so we want to give a much better account of ourselves. They’ve got good pace going forward, so we will have to defend as well as we have been, but like every game we will concentrate on ourselves and implement what we do on the game so that we get the 3 points. I'd just like to finish by saying thank you to the fans for sticking behind us, and please know that we're working as hard as possible to convert our performances into results. Come on you Daggers.

Michael Cheek’s first-half strike handed Dagenham & Redbridge a narrow 1-0 defeat at Hayes Lane. National League top scorer Michael Cheek gave the Ravens the lead after 34 minutes, blasting his shot from the centre of the box into the bottom corner. Angelo Balanta almost had the Daggers level just before the break, only for former Dagger Mark Cousins to deny him with a smart save. Dagenham applied plenty of pressure in the second period, as Paul McCallum and Mauro Vilhete saw multiple chances blocked by the Bromley defence. But despite the hosts going down to 10 men, after Luke Coulson was shown a straight red card, the Ravens were able to hold on to a win that condemned the Daggers to a third successive defeat. After only three minutes of the game, the Daggers were awarded a free-kick just outside the area, but with the dangerous Will Wright stepping up to take it, he could only curl the ball into the 14 THE DAGGER

welcoming arms of Cousins in the Bromley goal. Continuing on from their bright start, Daryl McMahon’s men were looking to strike early while the iron was hot and in the 7th minute, Angelo Balanta picked out George Saunders with a fine ball, but the winger’s delivery was deflected behind for a corner. Bromley were not out of the woods and from the resulting set-piece, Paul McCallum almost edged Dagenham in front, but his header drifted agonisingly wide of the top corner. As the game entered the 15th minute of the game, Bromley were beginning to warm into proceedings and pose a threat to the visiting defence, but the Daggers were able to deal with everything as they looked to secure the league double over the Ravens. However, the Daggers were still looking dangerous and creating the better of the chances, as Saunders saw his ferocious drive just before the half-hour mark was blocked by the head of Jack Holland, with the ball going behind for yet another corner kick. Despite being under pressure for large spells of the half, Bromley were able to edge themselves in front in the 34th minute through National League top scorer Michael Cheek, after the striker arrowed his shot into the bottom corner from the centre of the penalty area. The Daggers responded well to going behind and only minutes before the half time break, McCallum came within a whisker of levelling the score when he looked to get on the end of Wright’s delivery. However, the striker could only stab the ball over from close range. Just before the break, the visitors were pressing hard for an equaliser, but McMahon was left ruing the form of Bromley ‘keeper Mark Cousins as the former Daggers shot-stopper pulled off a brilliant save at his near post in the 44th minute, denying Balanta what would have been a certain goal.

13.04.21 V EASTLEIGH

Dagenham carried on where they had left off in the first half, but it was Bromley who almost found the back of the net. In the 55th minute, Jude Arthurs, who had just come on in place of Jack Holland, sent a dangerous ball into the box, but Cheek was unable to get a head to it, much to the relief of the Daggers. In the 65th minute, the ever-dangerous Balanta, who was once again at the heart of the Daggers’ attack, looked to exploit space outside the area by firing on goal, only for Cousins to once again frustrate the Colombian. McMahon’s men were starting to sense that a goal was not far away and in the 69th minute, McCallum came close once again, towering above his marker to get a head to Wright’s cross, but the ball was once again off target. As the second half went along, the only side that looked like scoring was the Daggers, and not long after McCallum’s miss, Mauro Vilhete, on for Liam Gordon, saw his effort cleared off the line at the far post, with the ‘keeper rooted to the spot. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, only Cousins was standing in the way of a Dagenham goal, denying McCallum with an impressive low save that left the striker with his head in his hands. Time was running out for McMahon’s side but with his side pressing hard for a goal at one end of the pitch, Bromley were able to break up the other end. In the 85th minute, only a tremendous reaction save from Elliot Justham denied James Alabi from doubling the Ravens lead. In the dying moments, having been denied what they thought was a foul, Bromley were reduced to 10 men after Coulson appeared to have said something to the referee in the centre of the pitch. But with such little time left in the game, the Daggers were unable to find that allimportant equaliser.

I N CO NVER SATION

GEORGE SAUNDERS “WE WENT TO THEIR PLACE LAST TIME AND THEY BEAT US 3-0, SO WE NEED TO CHANGE THAT AND GET REVENGE ON THEM REALLY.”

MIDFIELDER GEORGE SAUNDERS SPEAKS ABOUT HIS DEVELOPMENT AS A PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER AND TONIGHT’S GAME AGAINST EASTLEIGH.

It is often mentioned how much talent there is in the English non-league football system. Even established names like Yannick Bolasie, Jarrod Bowen, Che Adams, and Solly March have all begun their journeys into the professional game with Hillingdon Borough, Hereford United, Ilkeston Town, and Lewes, respectively.

Dagenham’s exciting midfielder George Saunders will be hoping to add his name to such an illustrious list, following his move to the Chigwell Construction Stadium from Isthmian League Hornchurch during the summer. So far, having played on occasion, during what has been an interrupted campaign, the 22-year-old has shown the flashes of brilliance which persuaded Daryl McMahon to bring him to the club. “So far it has been good for me and it has been a good experience,” admitted the exciting youngster. It has been a bit up and down as well because of a few injuries and the Covid-19 situation, but everyone is the same. So far it has been a very good experience for me. “I feel like I had a run of games but was then out with an injury for a few weeks, before coming back only to stop again because of Covid. I was in and out all the time, but I think that with everything settling down, me getting used to the full-time training and the higher demands, I feel my body is getting used to it.

“I feel like I have done well. Maybe I could do a bit better in areas, but I feel like that is the learning process I have got to take on. “Hopefully, over the last couple of games this season and going on into next year, I can build on that and kick on again.” What has been most impressive about his start to life with the Daggers is that he is equally adept to playing anywhere across the midfield, as well as up front on occasion. Eager to make his mark in the professional game and cement his place in the starting eleven, Saunders revealed how he was happy to play anywhere, just as long as he was in the team.

“Throughout my career, I have been mainly used as a wide player, especially when I was at Hornchurch last year, where I was played on the right wing, but I do not really mind,” he admitted. “On the wing, I can get the ball, deliver, and go around people, but when I am in the middle, I can receive the ball and drive at people, so it doesn't really matter where I play. “Being versatile is good because it helps you to learn quickly and if I have to do a job in a different position then I will do it as best I can. It is good to learn different positions, especially going full-time and stepping up a couple of levels as well.” Stepping up to a new level of football, one including teams packed full of players who would fit seamlessly into the Football League, raw talent alone will not be enough to make a side successful. An experienced head or two can often be the difference between success and failure. “It is massive,” admitted Saunders when asked about the importance of learning off some of his more experienced teammates. “Everyone in the squad and all the experienced players have all helped me during games when there are times where I could do things better or maybe there are times in training where I need to improve. “They have always helped me and they are always there for me so I really appreciate it.” Despite a poor run of results, Saunders believes that in the next game against Eastleigh, the boys will be fired up to get back to winning ways, especially against a side that inflicted a painful defeat on the Daggers a few months ago. “We went to their place last time and they beat us 3-0, so we need to change that and get revenge on them really.”

McMahon’s men were throwing everything they had at the Aldershot goal, as Dean Rance saw his effort blocked before Angelo Balanta was off target with a shot from the edge of the area.

opportunity to make the breakthrough, when the referee pointed to the spot after a handball. Stepping up to take it, Bettamer fired into the back of the net, sending the Daggers ‘keeper the wrong way.

But Danny Searle’s Aldershot side were comfortable in seeing out the rest of the game as the Daggers suffered their second loss on the bounce.

Daryl McMahon soon saw his side concede a second almost immediately after the restart when Joel Nouble caught the hosts cold and fired into the back of the net from close range.

Wanting to put Good Friday’s defeat behind them, the Daggers were pressing forward from the opening whistle. In the 3rd minute, Angelo Balanta attempted to pick a teammate out inside the penalty area with a beautifully struck cross, but Shots’ ‘keeper Mitch Walker rose highest to pluck the ball out of the air. In the seventh minute of the game, the Colombian’s glancing header from an Andrew Eleftheriou corner forced the visiting defence into a desperate clearance. Missing the likes of Elliot Johnson and Myles Weston, Daryl McMahon’s side were still looking dangerous going forward, and in the 16th minute Dean Rance connected with a swinging corner, but his effort drifted agonisingly wide of the right-hand post. Chance after chance was now falling the way of the hosts and only two minutes later, striker Paul McCallum thought he had gone one better, but after towering above his marker at the far post, he could only nod the ball inches off target.

Goals from Mohamed Bettamer and Joel Nouble either side of the half time break handed Dagenham a 2-0 defeat at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. Despite a strong start, Dagenham entered the half time break one goal down after Mohamed Bettamer converted from the spot in the 43rd minute. Shots’ striker Joel Nouble doubled the visitors lead immediately after the restart, firing home from close range as the Daggers were left with a mountain to climb. 26 THE DAGGER

Despite being under pressure for the majority of the first half, Aldershot had a glorious opportunity in the 25th minute to take the lead. After the ball was flicked back into the Daggers penalty area, Kodi LyonsFoster looked to have the goal at his mercy on the edge of the six-yard box. Thankfully for the hosts, the defender somehow put his close-range effort wide of Justham’s goal. Having defended another Dagenham attack in the 35th minute, the Shots looked to counter and after winning a free-kick midway into the hosts half, Mo Bettamer came within a whisker of opening the scoring, but his header was misdirected and Justham was able to watch the ball bobble wide. With less than five minutes before the break, Aldershot were handed another golden

Five minutes into the second period, the hosts had warmed back into the game, as Kenny Clark saw his header blocked before Will Wright’s ambitious volley from the edge of the area was charged down by an Aldershot defender. But the Shots, with a two-goal lead to hand, were smelling blood and in the 56th minute, they should have put the game to bed, but Toby Edser headed Harry Panayiotou’s cross wide from just a few yards out. Replacing Eleftheriou, substitute Mauro Vilhete was looking dangerous as he tried to get his side back into the game. In the 64th minute, the attacker dribbled his way to the edge of the box before an attempted cross was fortunately deflected into the arms of Walker. As the game passed the 70-minute mark, the Daggers were throwing everything they had at the visiting penalty area, as Rance and Balanta both had efforts which on another day, would have seen the Shots’ ‘keeper picking the ball out of the back of the net. However, Aldershot were not settling for what they had and in the 77th minute, Nouble bullied his way down the right-hand side before dribbling his way past two defenders. The powerful attacker went down in the penalty area, as the Shots looked for their second spot kick of the day, but the referee was not interested and waved his claims away. With six minutes left to play, the hosts were still searching for a way back into the game, as McCallum’s spectacular overhead kick from the middle of the penalty area drifted wide of the visitor’s goal. But Aldershot were able to see out the rest of the game without too much trouble as the Daggers fell to defeat.
