DARYL McMAHON Goodafternooneveryone,Ihopeyouareallsafeandwellandlookingforwardtotoday’sgame. A warm welcome to the staff and players from today’s opponents Hartley Wintney. There are a few of today’s opponents that I am very familiar with from my days managing Ebbsfleet United. Today’s opponents had an excellent win over our neighbours Barking in the last round. And we look forward to our encounter today.

Over the last couple of years, the club hasn’t made it to the 1st round proper of the FA Cup and we hope to be the team to achieve that today. The FA Cup is a fantastic competition and it gives all non-league clubs the opportunity to test ourselves against clubs from different divisions, play at different stadiums and it’s always a challenge whether you are competing against clubs from above us in the pyramid or below us in the pyramid. There is also the added incentive of the prize money on offer and because of the

circumstances we all find ourselves in that extra revenue would be welcome by every club.

On the injury front we are still without a host of players. We are very conscious that we want the players to come back and stay back. We don’t want players to keep coming back in and going out again.

We could have pushed one or two for today, but it could’ve been a bit too early. The injured players are working hard with John to get themselves right. And we must fight on with the players available for selection. Enjoy the game. Best,

THE OPPOSITION

HARTLEY WINTNEY Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897. The club's nickname of 'The Row' comes from Hartley Row, a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. In the late 1940s and into the 50s, playing in the Basingstoke League. Amongst the villagers who ran the club was its outstanding secretary, Fred Cook. Fredâ€™s minutes of meetings covering seasons 1948 to 1964 include the change of the club colours from blue squares to tangerine in July 1956.

In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six-year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup.

After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League (formerly Surrey Senior League). After the first couple of seasons in the

An influx of senior players brought Hartley success. During the 80s these included several notable ex-pros: Mick Travers (1980/81 to 86/87; his clubs included Reading, Portsmouth and Aldershot); Richard Walden (85/86 & 86/87; formerly with Aldershot, Sheffield Wed and Newport County); and Steve Finnieston (85/86 to 87/88; previously with Chelsea, Cardiff and Sheffield Utd). Within Ianâ€™s three years in management, the team gained the League Title (1982-83) and Runners Up (81-82), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners (80-81), and George Allen Cup Winners (81-82). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup (8283) and Aldershot Senior Cup (81-82).

In 2007-08 under manager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion to the Combined Counties League Premier Division, but 2008-09 ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under the new management team of Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in 2009-10. Coach Louis King then took the reigns as manager, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in 2010-11. Neville Roach took charge for 201112, assisted by Mick Wollen and Scott Tarr, and the club secured third in Div 1 to clinch a return to the CCL Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run to the Third Qualifying Round. But the euphoria of promotion was dampened when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left for Thatcham Town.

THE OPPOSITION

Ex-Millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad for 2012-13. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months. 24-year-old ex-Basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, was given his first managerial position. The introduction of a talented group of players restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club’s ‘Great Escape’ after a remarkable second half of the season.

2013-14 season highlight was another good FA Cup run to the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time, losing at home to Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The club finished 7th in the CCL Premier. The new club crest was commissioned. 2014-15 saw the club finish a comfortable 9th in the CCL Premier, after which Dillon stepped down and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers, It was a very eventful 2015-16.

After a memorable FA Cup win away at Merthyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2 down to 2-2 at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep in injury time. In the FA Vase, The Row broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to claim the 2015-16 CCL Premier Division title. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading. The 2016-17 season under comanagers Dan Brownlie and Anthony

Propelled by the goals of strike duo Sam Argent and Ross Cook, the Row topped the CCL Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to take their place in the Southern League at Step 4 for the first time.

since 2015 and has since guided the club to two Combined Counties league titles and successive promotions in 2017 and 2018. His other achievements in that time include winning the Aldershot Senior Cup, reaching the semi final of the Hampshire Senior Cup and guiding the club to an 8th placed finish in its first season at Step 3.

A Play-off place was secured, the Row winning the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Nic Ciardini on the end of Jack Ball's towering header to gain promotion to the Southern Premier South at Step 3.

Luke Williams, Goalkeeper: Joined the club in the summer of 2019 and played 38 times in all competitions last season, more than any other player. Winner of the Supporters’ Player and Players’ Player of the Season awards.

Now in Southern League South, East Division, 2017-18 saw the Row embark on their first FA Trophy campaign with wins against Gosport Borough and Farnborough before going out in the First Round Proper to eventual finalists, Bromley FC.

With Dan Turkington now co-manager alongside Anthony Millerick, 2018-19 started well at Step 3, after a difficult start a late run saw Hartley finish 8th. To remain at the level also required another substantial round of ground improvements but that was achieved by the required deadline. The Covid-19 affected 2019-20 Southern Premier South campaign only clicked into gear for the Row shortly before the season was abandoned. With Anthony Millerick now as Manager, and Steve Noakes coming in alongside as his assistant, they helped pull the team away from the ‘worry zone’ but what followed was a battle off the pitch for the club’s survival in the face of the lost revenue due to extreme wet weather and then the pandemic. Steve Noakes, Assistant Manager: ‘Noaksey’ became Hartley assistant manager in 2019 after a five-year spell as a player at the club. A central defender and former club captain, he was part of the squad that won backto-back Combined Counties league titles, followed by promotion to Step 3 via the play-offs in 2018.

Chris Harris, Goalkeeper: Highly rated young goalkeeper, understudy to Luke Williams, who won man of the match in a 3-0 win vs Walton Casuals last season. Has featured several times in crucial games for the first team. Nathan Smart, Defender: Hartley’s club captain in each of our three seasons as a Step 3 club. An experienced player and leader who was awarded Players’ Player of the Season in his first year at the club. Joe Gater, Defender: Featured regularly for the club after joining midway through last season and scored twice in Hartley’s Aldershot Senior Cup quarter final win back in February.

Tom Bird, Defender: Experienced player who established himself as Hartley’s first choice left back after joining at the beginning of last season. One of the club’s most consistent performers last term and turned down

offers from other clubs to remain a Hartley player this season.

Shane Hollamby, Defender: Made a successful return to Hartley last season as one of the standout performers. Won back-to-back Combined Counties league titles in a previous spell with the club.

Matt Drage, Defender: Arrived midway through Hartley’s first season at Step 3 and helped steer the club to a top half finish. Briefly left Hartley last season but has featured regularly since his return in February. Dean Stow, Defender: Set piece specialist who re-joined Hartley for a second spell in the summer. Captained the side that won promotion to Step 3 via the play-offs in 2018.

Lukas Burt, Midfielder: Second spell at Hartley after returning from 4 years out playing College Football in the USA. Scored goals at a good standard in the US and impressed during preseason.

Tyron Smith, Midfielder: The club’s vice-captain and regular penalty taker now in his fourth season with the Row. Awarded Manager’s Player of the Season in the summer after some excellent performances.

Josh Webb, Midfielder: Now in his fourth season at the club and remains a fans’ favourite. Helped the club to win promotion in his debut season before winning Manager’s Player of the Season a year later as Hartley achieved a top half finish at Step 3.

Dominic Morgan-Griffiths, Midfielder: Young and exciting new signing who is one to watch for Hartley this season. Featured regularly in preseason. Anis Nuur, Midfielder: New signing who has shown good potential since joining the club from Westfield in the summer.

Sam Argent, Striker: Former club captain who re-joined earlier in 2020. Scored 50 goals in successive seasons

during his first spell as Hartley won back-to-back league titles.

Kingsley Eshun, Striker: Scored against the Row for Hendon last season before joining in February, is strong and full of energy.

Mitchell Parker, Striker: Now in his second spell with the club after rejoining in January 2020. Has a good goalscoring record and netted four times away at Harrow Borough last season, which sparked an upturn in the club’s form. Ben Wright, Striker: New signing whose former clubs include Basingstoke Town, Peterborough United and Braintree Town. Scored in three of Hartley’s pre-season friendlies.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME FROM THE CHIGWELL CONSTRUCTION STADIUM This afternoon we begin our FA Cup campaign, a competition that every player looks forward to. Looking back on last Saturday’s match against Yeovil Town, we were disappointed that we couldn’t take advantage of the sending off in the second half. In the first 30 minutes, I thought that we dominated and really should have gone in front. They then bounced back and we rode our luck a little bit as we got into half-time. After the sending off, we just couldn’t create any real opportunities. I remember Sam (Deering) being slid through and being denied in the area, which was a big chance. But credit to Yeovil, they’re an experienced team and they were able to shut us out in the final moments and grab a point. On a positive note, it was nice to grab a clean sheet and I hope we can take that momentum into today’s match.

The FA Cup is a special competition and I’ve had some great memories throughout my career at a number of clubs. I was at Chelmsford when we beat Colchester to reach the second round in 2012. We were in the Conference South at the time and they were in League One, so it was a massive upset, and that’s what the FA Cup is good at producing. We need to guard against complacency today to make sure that we’re not on the end of an upset. Hartley Wintney have won four matches to get to this stage of the competition and will be fired up for today’s game! We need to be professional in our approach and make sure that we get the job done today and advance to the next round. I hope that you will be cheering us on from home! Up the Daggers Kenny

THE DAGGERS WERE HELD TO A GOALLESS DRAW BY YEOVIL TOWN AT THE CHIGWELL CONSTRUCTION STADIUM LAST WEEKEND.

The Daggers made just one change from the 2-0 defeat away to Woking on Tuesday night, with Darren McQueen replacing Paul McCallum who came off injured after just four minutes in the Woking fixture. For Yeovil, Joe Quigley, who left Dagenham and Redbridge this week, was a named starter.

The Daggers started brightly, Sam Deering whipping an inviting corner into the box within the opening two minutes; with the ball eventually clearing to Mitch Brundle who struck a right footed effort just a couple of yards wide of Adam Smith’s far post.

Yeovil refused to let the pressure count, forcing their own opportunity down the left flank just five minutes later as Albi Skendi controlled and hit a goal-bound effort which was smartly saved by Elliot Justham. A quarter of an hour gone, and the match was turning into an intense battle for possession, both sides strong with their tackles which promised for a fiery affair. Gabriel Rogers operating down the left-hand side became the visitors’ biggest threat, creating chances in abundance in the first period; setting up Matt Warburton in doing so who saw an effort flash wide.

Both defences continued to hold firm until a long ball over the top saw Yeovil’s Rhys Murphy all on his own bearing down on goal, rifling the ball early with his left foot only to be denied by a fully stretched Elliot Justham who tipped the effort onto the inside of the post.

The Glovers began to show real authority and dominance towards the half time whistle, playing flowing football through the channels which caused problems for the Daggers’ resilient defence. However, nobody could stop a Luke Wilkinson free kick from twenty-five yards which cannoned back off the crossbar, leaving Elliot Justham stranded. The Daggers fortunate

not to be behind at the break. Into the second half and the away side appeared unphased by the break in play, continuing where they left off from the first half with pacey transitional play from defence to attack. Charlie Lee with the half’s first chance, creating space only to see his audacious effort fly over the bar.

Despite the away side’s mounting pressure, the Daggers were handed a huge confidence boost. Darren McQueen received the ball from deep and made a surging run past Luke Wilkinson whose mistimed tackle bought the forward to the ground, resulting in a straight red card for a last man challenge. The resulting free-kick was smartly laid off to Charlee Adams to strike first time, his effort marginally wide. Although now a man down, Yeovil refused to sit back. The strike force of Murphy and Quigley proved a constant threat in an offensive driven performance.

With twenty minutes to go, the Daggers started to look sharper, moving through the gears with pace. Elliot Johnson’s through ball from the halfway line eventually ending up at the feet of Sam Deering who cut inside and would have scored had it not been for a last gasp block. Substitute Will Wright found some joy down the right flank, delivering an array of inviting crosses into a crowded Yeovil penalty area.

The hosts further pressed the ten men visitors as Angelo Balanta’s trickery resulted in him being brought down just outside the penalty area. Will Wright’s resulting free-kick could only make it as far as the wall.

Into the dying embers and despite ninety minutes of football, the intensity of the game remained the same. Both teams desperately trying to force half a chance to win it. These efforts were to no avail as the referee blew for full-time soon after.

GEORGE SAUNDERS This week, we spoke with George Saunders as he previews our FA Cup match this weekend, as well as giving us an insight into how he has settled in here at the Daggers.

“I made my debut on Saturday, which felt very good! With the injury in pre-season putting me behind the rest of the boys, it was so good to be out there and come off the bench. I noticed the physicality straight away; the play was a lot sharper than I’ve been used to, but I will get to grips with that as I play more minutes.

“I thought we had a lot of chances after the sending off, but when teams go down to 10 men, sometimes it makes it more difficult because they get more players behind the ball and play more cautiously.

“It’s great that the manager had faith in me on Saturday to bring me on to try and change the game, I’m sure as I get more minutes into the legs that I’ll continue to improve.”

Saunders had his pre-season disrupted by a foot injury that he picked up away at Maidstone, but the winger is feeling good after a spell on the sidelines.

“I feel really good at the moment, I’ve been in with John (Gowens) nearly every day since the injury working on different things and he’s really helped to get me fit. It was hard because I did a couple of games in pre-season before I got injured and then I was a step behind the lads, but I’ve worked hard to get back fit.

“Pre-season was a bit frustrating for me, the first couple of weeks in pre-season I was getting used to the fulltime training after making the step up and then I got injured. Then it was all about getting fit again and getting ready as quickly as I could. “I’ve got to get my body to training every day because before I was only training twice a week, so recovery for me is really important,” he said. The FA Cup is always an exciting competition for players to be involved in, and Saunders is looking forward to today’s game.

MOST FAMOUS PERSON MET Joe Cole is probably the most famous. He trained with us during pre-season and he has still got it. He’s been to World Cups and represented his country over so many years, so it would have to be him.

“It’s always good to play in the FA Cup, it’s a huge competition and it’s another chance for me to get more minutes under my belt and get my match fitness up.

“I’ve played in the FA Cup with Hornchurch and the games are always great to be involved in. In my two seasons with the Urchins, we reached the 2nd and 3rd qualifying rounds, so it’s exciting to have the opportunity to only be one win away from the first round proper.

“It’s a big game today, we all want to be in the hat for the 1st round and have the opportunity to play one of the big-league teams and advance as far as we can. That’s the magic of the FA Cup, drawing a big team away and playing in a huge stadium would be amazing, but we have to do the job today,” he added.

The Daggers have had a number of fixtures in the early part of the season due to the truncated nature of the 2020/21 campaign, and Saunders has welcomed not having a midweek match in the lead-up to this FA Cup fixture.

“The Cup offers us a little bit of a rest from the rush of league football, we’ve had our first full week of training without a midweek game, which was really good. It allows more time for those that are injured to get themselves closer and allows for everyone that’s played a lot of matches already a chance to rest a little bit more.

“Hartley Wintney will be up for it this afternoon, winning those four games to get to play us will mean that they’re full of confidence and will be buzzing once they cross that white line. We have to make sure that we’re focused on today and ready for a strong test.

“I know having played at the lower levels, teams come into these games against bigger opposition with nothing to lose, they see it as a level playing field and they will give everything on the field,” he added.

When I first started, it was unusual for people my age to be working in a care home, it was an eye opener and very rewarding. Next up was an away tie against Hanwell Town which resulted in an eight-goal thriller, 5-3 the final score, before a home match against Daggers’ local rivals Barking ending in a 3-1 home win for The Row in the Third Qualifying Round. Elsewhere in the previous round, North West Counties League Premier Division side Skelmersdale United progressed to the Emirates FA Cup fourth round qualifying for the first time since 1972/73, after edging past Longridge Town 1-0. The Blueboys, along with their thirdround qualifying opponents, were one of five clubs left in the draw from step five of the non-league pyramid. Emini Adegbenro’s second-half penalty ultimately proved decisive at the Mike Riding Ground.

Christchurch were dealt a cruel blow in front of the BBC cameras, as the Wessex League Premier Division outfit held Dulwich Hamlet, who play three tiers higher in the National League South, after 90 mins before going down in a penalty shootout. Quade Taylor was sent off for Hamlet late on, but Deon Moore looked to have stolen the win two minutes from time, only for Christchurch to force spot kicks with an equaliser at the death. But the Priory couldn’t carry their momentum into the shootout, and

Sanchez Ming scored the decisive penalty to mark the end of Christchurch’s commendable run in the competition. Sheppey United tasted defeat at the hands of National League South Eastbourne Borough, despite Billy Bennett giving the Ites hope with a tenth-minute opener. Greg Luer came off the bench to score goals either side of a Chris Whelpdale strike to turn the tie around and keep Eastbourne in the hat ahead of the next round. Dulwich Hemlet, fellow National League South sides Chippenham Town, Hampton & Richmond Borough and

St Albans City all needed penalties to progress, beating Ebbsfleet United, Hornchurch and Mickleover Sports respectively. There were also shootout victories for Cray Wanderers, Hayes & Yeading United, Leiston, Banbury United, South Shields and Wimborne Town. Weston-super-Mare’s 6-0 win over Larkhall Athletic was among the highest scoring results of the round, while Oxford City and Darlington both hit six against Tamworth and Tadcaster Albion respectively.
