H

alal integrity of halal products especially food is one of the concerned issues to many Muslims around the world. It has become a profound attention among Muslim consumers, especially as seeking for halal is a religious obligation. The issues of false halal logo, porcine contaminated ingredients, improper Islamic slaughtering have raised concerns among Muslims consumers on the authenticity of the halal products. Not only that, they also question the halal integrity along the ‘farm-to-fork’ supply chain of the products. This issue has definitely played a major role in determining the marketability of the halal products in any countries with a large number of Muslim consumers. There are three unique approaches that industry players can adopt in maintaining halal integrity of products or services, namely Halal Executive, Internal audit and Halal Assurance Management System (HAS). In Malaysia, a Halal Executive position is a mandatory position for selected halal certificate holders (companies or businesses involved in halal industry) in accordance to the Malaysia Halal Certification requirements. One of the main responsibilities of a Halal Executive is to monitor halal integrity of the products/ services along the production process within the company, besides having to ensure that all related processes in the company are implemented in accordance with the set conditions.

Halal Assurance Management System (HAS), on the other hand, is a formalised system that documents the Halal Critical Point(s) (HCP), related processes and management responsibilities in ensuring the halal integrity of product(s)/ service(s) is maintained throughout the internal supply chain. JAKIM has introduced the HAS Guidelines in 2012 which emphasises on the identification and elimination of the nonhalal contaminants from entering the halal processing from the very beginning of the processes. An effective HAS implementation will enhance consumer confidence in products produced and services offered The third approach is internal audit. Internal audit functions as a tool to evaluate the implementation and compliance of HAS requirements, record both compliances and non-compliance as well as ensure correction and corrective action are taken immediately and effectively. The objective of internal audit also include identifying areas or processes for improvements in ensuring the halal integrity is maintained throughout the company. An effective halal integrity monitoring approaches is needed to be adopted by the halal industry players to remain trustworthy and relevant in the halal industry. It is vital as the Muslim consumers nowadays are more knowledgeable and concern about the halal food they consume.
