LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends, Last May, a very good friend of Dominican Academy, Don Gross, (loving husband of the late Marie Genovese Gross,’48), gave me a copy of a book by M.J. Ryan entitled Attitudes of Gratitude: How to Give and Receive Joy Every Day of Your Life. I used this little gem of a book during the summer, reading one chapter every few days and reflecting on the wisdom contained within. One practice that was suggested was to start every morning and end every day with a brief reflection on what might happen or what did happen during the day that you would be grateful for. Recognizing all the good things that happen or even the difficult things that can be life lessons gives me more energy to deal with the challenges that arise every day.

As I look over this Annual Giving Report, it feels like another chapter in Attitudes of Gratitude! Even though I personally sign each letter of thanks, I am overwhelmed to see how many of you support our girls and the work that we do here at D.A. Let me give you some highlights. This year 720 gifts were donated totaling $255,000 for our Fund for Excellence, the best we have ever done. In addition, my special thanks goes to Izabella Stasicki,’04, Ann Marie Flynn,’69 and Wendy Fernandez,P’14,’16, the chairpersons of the Spring Auction & Benefit committee and to all the committee members who organized an amazing event. It was wildly successful! Our online auction allowed us to purchase 44 new desks. You all made a huge impact in our ability to offer the quality and unique educational experience that we provide. I am so very grateful for our teachers who give so much of their creativity and energy to engage our girls each day, for our parents who volunteer to help at our admissions and fundraising events and who painted several of our rooms this summer, for our Alumnae who serve in a variety of ways to strengthen our network of alums and to share

their talents with our girls. I give thanks to my staff… to Sr. Pat who has worked tirelessly to engage our faculty in discussions designed to improve teaching, to Sheila and Liz who have greatly improved our communications and the success of our Fund for Excellence, for Diane and Sr. Mary who have improved our end of the year audit procedures so that we can get this report out to you sooner, to Jo Ann who has talked every day with potential new students, to Jane who handles all the minutia associated with opening week and to Carmen who keeps track of each of the girls. Meister Eckhart, a Dominican mystic, is quoted as saying, “If the only prayer you say in your whole life is ‘thank you’, that would suffice.” So thank you, thank you, thank you! Please continue your generosity. You make such a big impact on our wonderful girls. May God’s peace be with you,

Sister Barbara Kane, O.P. Principal

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES’ CHAIR Dear Alumnae and Friends, I realize that even though I loved attending Dominican Academy for high school, I never fully appreciated it. Possibly, I never fully appreciated a lot of things in my life. I grew up in a wonderful home with two very loving, creative parents who encouraged their children to dream and to be themselves, but also to ask the most of themselves. I had two terrific brothers (alums of Xavier) and an amazing sister (also an alum of Dominican). I had friends who would literally do anything for me, as I would do for them. Because of this truly virtuous upbringing, I probably walked through the halls of the townhouse on 68th thinking it was “nice”, but not understanding what it was doing for the formation of my identity and my character. Being an architect has convinced me that space does matter. The adage, “Walls dissolve in celebration”, is also true. Exemplary education occurs at Dominican Academy, in concert with its surroundings, without being overt. In many ways, the walls dissolve. The coffered ceiling of the library, the skylight of the mezzanine level, the pillowed limestone of the front facade...all engaged me in some way, but at

the same time, I didn’t realize it. I see this with my own daughters. I see how they aren’t even aware that where they are affects how they act, what they do. When my oldest daughter, Jacquelyn, is in a swimming pool, she has the broadest smile allowed on an eight year old. The sunlight hitting the blue water, the multicolored swimsuits jumping in and out are infectious; they bring joy. My youngest daughter, Genevieve, knows when her brother and sister have left our apartment to go to school. Our home transforms into a quiet, almost somber space, until those two come back. Instantly, Genevieve’s smile re-appears and the acoustics of our home are challenged with giggles, singing and the occasional yelling! These are all examples of how different spaces request different behaviors, and you don’t even know it. As I come to the end of my term as Chair having served six years on the Board, I realize how the townhouse on 68th requests a specific behavior. To a board member it means serious responsibility and strength of conviction. It also requests gratitude for having been given the opportunity to continue the admirable mission of Dominican Academy. As a student, and now, as a board member, walking through the halls of Dominican Academy, climbing the red stairs, and meeting in the library, I am reminded to be alert, to take nothing for granted and to work hard. It is my sincere hope that my two daughters have the opportunity to attend Dominican Academy. It won’t be easy. It is academically rigorous, it

is selective and most of all, it needs a lot of care. Thank you to all of you for your contributions through the years. Dominican Academy continues to strive to achieve more so that you are ensured that your generosity directly advances the school’s academic goals for our students. My daughters will be the classes of 2022 and 2028. Will they be attending Dominican Academy? How does it remain the school we are all so proud of? With your continued generous support, it will, of course! I am confident that the current Board of Trustees believes in the growth and mission of Dominican Academy. I am also confident that the parents, current students, alumnae, faculty, staff and administration also believe in the incredible role Dominican Academy plays in the education of young women in New York, the United States, and the world. For that, along with my daughters, I am grateful. My very best wishes to Joan Rue,’65, as she begins her term as Chairperson, and to the whole Board of Trustees for the fabulous years to come! And to all of you, Dominican Academy appreciates your kind donations every year. Let’s make this the best year yet! Respectfully yours,

Suzanne Marie Musho-Downey, ‘86

Scholarship Giving Dominican Academy is blessed by the generosity of its scholarship donors, the Board of Trustees and the Dominican Sisters of Peace, who support the mission to educate and challenge young women. Without this support, many scholars would not be able to attend Dominican Academy. ADRIAN RADMORE FOSTER SCHOLARSHIP FUND Adrian Radmore Foster ’51 has pledged to fully fund this four-year scholarship for a deserving Dominican Academy student. We thank Adrian for her generous donation and for recognizing the value of a Dominican Academy education. THE BILL AND JOAN MORROW RUE, ’65 SCHOLARSHIP FUND This generous scholarship not only provides tuition for the recipient’s four years of study at Dominican Academy, but also fully supports the school by covering all the costs associated with that education. The gap between the tuition charged per student and the expenses the school incurs was approximately $4,000 in 2012. We are grateful to Joan and Bill for their continued commitment to D.A.

Alumnae Giving THE DOMINICAN ACADEMY ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION Alumnae Serving Alumnae The Alumnae Association’s mission is to foster close relationships among alumnae and to encourage the participation of alumnae in ways that develop the growth and advancement of Dominican Academy. Alumnae work together to support the mission of the school. Every year, these alumnae help coordinate events such as the Rooftop Reconnection Reception in September, All Class Reunion in October, Young Alumnae Welcome Back in December, and Career Day in May. Alumnae are invited to attend various events throughout the year and are encouraged to give back to Dominican Academy so that this new generation of students can benefit from a Dominican Academy education.

CLASS REPRESENTATIVE PROGRAM The Class Representative encourages her classmates to keep in touch with each other and with the school in a variety of ways. Each representative helps locate alumnae, shares class notes to be published semi-annually in Veritas, and helps coordinate her class reunion. This includes coordinating a class gift to support the school’s greatest needs. Class Representatives also inform alumnae of meetings and circulate the recorded minutes, which are posted on the web site under the Alumnae Tab. The Alumnae Association meets quarterly and the dates will be posted on the web site calendar. If you want to become a Class Representative, please let us know by emailing alumassoc@dominicanacademy.org. The more reps a class has, the more connected you will be!

Parent Giving D.A. parents donate their gifts of time and talent to schoolsponsored events, such as Open House, Meet the Teachers Night, the annual Christmas Party and the Spring Auction & Benefit. In addition to their invested interest in these events, the Parents’ Association raised $37,000 for Dominican Academy through events and the collection of dues. Dominican Academy is grateful for the continued support of the Parents’ Association. We encourage all parents to participate. Please see the calendar on the web site for monthly meetings held on Wednesday evening and Thursday mornings.

Student Giving

Mothers gather at the Mother-Daughter Luncheon aboard the Spirit of New York.

Students give back to Dominican Academy even before they graduate! We feel strongly that our girls should in some way play a role in fundraising for their school, so each student is responsible for selling a minimum of $300 worth of raffle tickets for the Spring Auction & Benefit. The student body raised $64,285!

Current parents at The Penn Club for the Spring Auction & Benefit.

Campus Ministry members traveled to San Diego over Easter break to volunteer.

2012 Spring Auction & Benefit Giving On March 23, 2012, Dominican Academy moved to a new venue to host the annual Spring Auction & Benefit. The D.A. community celebrated and supported academic excellence at The Penn Club in midtown Manhattan. The proceeds from the event help bridge the gap between the tuition charged and the actual expense associated with providing a D.A. education. Your support enables intellectually

gifted girls to attend New York City’s most academically rigorous and spiritually enriching Catholic girls’ college preparatory high school. Anthony E. Mirti, former Board of Trustee, and Florence Jachara Mirti, ’58 were honored for their gifts of time, talent and treasure. The event raised $104,000 in revenue, returning over $76,000 to the school. We are grateful to all who supported this event.
