Thank You Perth This year’s Perth Disability Connection Expo was the largest Australian event in the Disability and NDIS space on record. More than 8500 people attended over the two days and we were heartened to see so many connections made in such a diverse community. Several key advocacy groups including People with Disabilities WA and Secca attended to share their work and give attendees direct access to learn more about the information services, programs and support available. With more than 230 exhibitors, a locally-sourced market place; a Community Centre sponsored by DAC for grass-roots and emerging services and initiatives; five entertainment zones, and a large performance area showcasing the talents of people living with disability, it was a massive community celebration. At the free “Ask a NDIS Expert - Support Hub” visitors were able to meet with and talk to subject matter professionals to learn more about how to navigate the NDIS, and understand important issues like what mainstream health services cover and what is related to the NDIS. Uncle Theo opened the expo with a Welcome to Country performing with his son on the Main Stage, followed by comments by the Hon Mr Kylie McGinn, MLC, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Disability Services who, along with our major sponsor’s St Jude’s pulled the ribbon to allow streams of guests in for the first wave of visitors over two fantastic days!

All that Goes into delivering Australia’s biggest disability and NDIS-related events The Perth event is now the most expensive event to deliver in the country. With a starting budget landing over $500,000, the venue and basic build costs alone are now more than $350,000. Labour shortages mean staffing costs are also astronomical. The event is not possible without the support of our sponsors and partners. The Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre is the only precinct in WA that can supply the level of access, transport options and space to be able to deliver an event of this size. It was great to be able to take Mr McGinn on a tour of the space and the specific build that caters to people with disabilities, before the crowds peaked. We are also very grateful for an invitation to discuss how the WA Government can support such a massive undertaking – one that is grassroots led by people with disability, and continues to be shaped by advocacy groups and invested community members.

“We pride ourselves on this event being free for anyone to attend” It is vital to the ongoing growth of the expo that Developing Australian Communities secures ongoing funding through state, federal and private streams to ensure we never need to change this or require advocacy or community groups to be charged a fee to attend, in order to connect with any of the 4.4 million Australians living with Disability. The physical build of the expo is executed in just 24 hours and dismantled in around 6 hours. It is a phenomenal feat, punctuated by the practical limitations of how many days’ venue hire as a organisation we can afford, with finite sponsor resourcing and no Government contribution to date. It is a testament to the hard work of our event and delivery team and the expo builders that it is even possible. Venues have commercial imperatives, and understandably have limited capacity to provide support through extra time or discounted hire for additional build time. In the three years since DAC’s inception, we have developed strong working relationships with each of the state-based venues and we look forward to continuing to partner with them to grow the event year on year. Unlike mainstream trade shows in lucrative sectors like boating or finance, we know the investment that the majority of service providers can make for community outreach at expos is capped. We recognise this, and so the funding model of needs to be structured to allow options for new and emerging organisations to participate. Government investment will allow us to continue to deliver free spaces for advocacy and community groups and contribute to the vital capacity building programs that are the backbone of the sector and enable people to seek and receive support.

More than “Just an Expo” Announcing the Community Development and Education Hub! Our Disability Connection Expos are built on one huge free community event in four major states, with capacity building opportunities and community development programs branching out. With the effects of the pandemic on gathering limits now over, DAC is now able to also roll out key community development and education options at every event in 2024. We are delighted to announce the exciting new Community Development and Education Hub attached to each Disability Connection Expo and are calling for expressions of interest for involvement. The Hub will include a series of workshops, presentations, and sessions for people with disability, carers, families, organisations, and professionals and will run alongside the expo at the venue. This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for community strengthening and content development with ongoing regional and virtual delivery.

Transport, Parking and Access is Key It has always been our desire for transport agencies to come aboard to support and increase capacity at the expo. Feedback from visitors and advocacy groups confirms our view that greater assistance is needed at Elizabeth Quay and local stations to support the influx of people using wheel chairs and requiring mobility support on our event days in the city. It is our aim to work with local advocacy groups and Transperth to provide an increased staffing at stations. Both visitors and exhibitors have indicated that, parking was an issue at PCEC. Unlike other major venues, PCEC does not have its own event venue car park. Although there are 23 ACROD bays, the influx of people with mobility support needs requires a strategic approach. In the coming months, the team will be working with the companies within the CBD and City of Perth to find a solution for these parking challenges. Venues increasingly demonstrate a commitment to training their staff in accessibility which is positive to see. In addition, DAC staff are trained in dealing with various situations and persons with disabilities. There is also dedicated first aid on hand to provide support where required. Access is not just about bricks and mortar modifications. Invisible disability and diverse support needs require access considerations such as vision, hearing, sensory and cognitive areas. We are looking at ways to support a quiet room designated away from noise, additional mobility partners, QR codes systems that provide audio summaries for those with visual impairments and additional interpreters. There always needs to be balance when the community comes together to celebrate and connect, performing and showcasing when some people attending have difficulty with noise. We encourage people to bring resources they use to support attendance in loud spaces.

Exhibitor Communications and Planning This year the events team connected with our 230 exhibitors either by text message or phone call. Our 1300 number also gave exhibitors direct contact to one of the events team to provide support. We are continually looking at the best ways to communicate and help organisations leading up to the event. Emails are sent prior to the event with all relevant information however, we understand that emails can get overlooked so there is a comprehensive FAQ page on our website. Connection is Important Now More Than Ever This is a huge time for both people living with disability and service providers. The Royal Commission into abuse and neglect in Australia, the 10-year NDIS anniversary and the NDIS review all occurring. However, for many people this is also a time of uncertainty as they still struggle to navigate the NDIS although we are now 10 years into delivery. There is significant work now being done between state and federal governments to explore the collaboration between mental health, early intervention, children’s services, and the complexities within the community services space. It is important for us to connect and work as one across Australia to ensure we demand a disability sector we can all be proud of.

Mainstage Entertainment With 16 amazing performances over 2 days, our Mainstage Performers kept visitors and exhibitors alike entertained with a new and exciting act every 30 minutes. Hosted by resident MC, Pete in his trademark striped suit jacket, we welcomed Activ Foundation with their showcase of the “Back to the Future”. Expo favourites Ballroomfit graced the stage again with Ballroom and Latin dancing by participants living with physical and intellectual disabilities. Coastal Lakes College brought in some of their amazingly talented students, who shared with us dances they had created and choreographed as part of their ‘Performability Program’. Naming Sponsor St Jude’s NDIS showcased an interactive Lego experience that drew lots of attention. Gold Sponsor, Nulsen, demonstrated an all-inclusive art installation and Super you Therapy introduced us to their newest mate, therapy dog “X” 2022 Best Booth winners WA All Abilities Football showcased a crowd activation with seriously impressive all-ability AFL skills and drills.

By showcasing their work, sharing personal stories, and providing educational resources, advocacy groups raise awareness of the rights, abilities, and accomplishments of people living with disabilities which in turn, helps to combat stigma and promote inclusivity. At Developing Australian Communities, we believe in a fair go, and the view that everyone deserves a hand, so we select a handful of deserving organisations to attend the expo at no charge.
