Lali Torma’s drawings unfurl with an organic grace, their forms echoing the subtle movement of nature. Rooted in the quiet rhythms of the subconscious and the textures of natural patterns, her work invites viewers into a meditative flow. Through these fluid forms she bridges controlled technique and intuitive expression, creating art that feels both grounded and alive.
“My artistic practice is an unsystematic yet persistent probing of the subconscious, revealing emotional textures through a meditative flow. I seek a delicate balance between controlled technique and intuitive expression. Through calligraphic ink drawings or knife-painted abstractions, I create hybrid fluctuating structures inspired by nature, patterns, and archaic forms.”
Q&A
Fluidity can mean being open and spontaneous, but also a bit unpredictable. How do you navigate that balance in your process?
I work with ink on smooth paper fluidity feels inherent. The lines flow freely. It took time to forget technique and trust the hand, but now the hand knows what to do. Nevertheless, each new piece, each new form, starts with an accident something unpredictable, random. That’s the only way to discover something new. The challenge is not to get lost in all the options an accident brings, but to move slowly, one possibility at a time, and choose what resonates.
What aspects of nature or energy most inspire your sense of flow and organic form, and how do they manifest in your creative process?
I grew up near rivers and forests, and I still spend hours watching the wind move through leaves, or clouds drift by, or the surface of water shifting. I’m drawn to moving patterns of light they hypnotize me.
Q&A
(Continued) They bring a sense of fluidity to my thoughts and feelings, and that movement becomes visible in what I make expansive, horizontal. When I observe more static patterns moss, bark, membranes the work takes on a different quality, one of depth and intimacy, a more vertical journey.
When people see your work, what kind of feeling or sense of movement do you hope they walk away with?
My ink drawings are the closest to my heart. They feel comforting, intimate, full of softness, calm, and a touch of whimsy—all the good things I need for myself and hope to share with others. And if you look closely, my lines don’t stop at the edge of the page; they continue beyond it, as if part of a larger pattern. I like to think the feeling works the same way—that those gentle emotions can keep unfolding, quietly, for as long as one needs them.
Nature offers the most noninvasive, original, and beautiful patterns. By absorbing these freely, I connect deeply with my subconscious. My drawings capture inner states through abstract patterns, resembling membranes or surfaces in continuous movement.”
