Introduction This publication is a culmination of thesis projects that showcase the graduating class of students receiving their Bachelor of Fine Arts. A semester typically dedicated towards developing research, writing, and creating work for exhibitions became drastically complicated as students dealt with the onset of a global pandemic that dismantled any sense of structure or normalcy. Amidst the chaos, these young artists found ways to be creative within their limitations—creating make-shift studios, devising alternative plans to execute their work, and finding solutions under extraordinary circumstances.

During a time of social distancing and self-isolation, our students displayed incredible amounts of compassion as they worked collectively to offer their peers advice, feedback, motivation, and comfort. These extraordinary individuals have become exemplary models (for their peers, their loved ones, and all of us) of how to respond to crisis with resiliency and grace. They embody the creative spirit and its ability to inspire in hard times.

The body of work in this publication is a testament to creative problem solving, hard work, and community.

Influences on the Brain

My once foe, now friend: abstract painting. I used to be a perfectionist, trying to make the most aesthetically pleasing artwork I could, that was not working. My current work portrays influences on the brain such as: music, conversation, white noise, inner dialogue, and my brushstrokes themselves. These pieces use paper, acrylic paint, and occasionally other mediums. All tools/materials are chosen by the first thought that comes to me when I experience the outside influence. These pieces are a true look inside my head, each one is made with love and each one is unique to my mindset that day.

Enjoy

Do you remember being a kid, swinging on a swing set, feeling invincible, and jumping off the swings, like you were flying? I want that sense of fun from my art, a reminder to live and enjoy what is given to me. I use multiple mediums to show this with color, print, and making my work interactive. I am currently making a seesaw to remind us of the fun in the simple things. I want to feel the rush of wind in my hair from jumping off the swing set, and to celebrate when I land successfully.

Coming to Terms

Body image has been a constant battle within women.

I struggle to accept my weight, how I look, and with my eczema. My intention is to communicate that no one is alone in their feelings towards themselves. In the making of my work I have come to terms with who I am, though it is a battle still to love myself. The way we grow up, the choices we make, the things we think, and the way our bodies react to these choices are what I wanted to focus on in these images.

Leaning On My Left Hand

I have found two ways of dealing with the stress of living everyday life. Escapism allows me to run away from real world problems by indulging in entertainment.

In contrast, I use American Transcendentalism to confront my anxieties through acceptance and mindfulness. Working on my book and illustrations is one way I am coping with current stress. This acrylic painting is a form of escapism as painting itself allows me to detach from reality. It subtly depicts my inner conflict between Escapism and Mindfulness through illustration and storytelling.

Line and Form

While producing work I focus completely on formal qualities; the perfection of symmetry and control. I use pattern deliberately as a cohesive tool that pulls disparate forms together. I work in a patient and controlled manner while exacting angles and specific forms, developing a language within objects. The focus I would like the audience to take from this work is both the simplicity and balance which extends from a proportionate design of the body. Currently, I admire the qualities of symmetry and minimalism and continue to push my own boundaries of size and proportion.

We are What We Build

Where do you live? I have created a virtual city that combines existing environments, nature and buildings.

The city evokes memories and experiences that people might have encountered on this planet. People come from different countries and places, but they share similar interests and thoughts. I am from Seoul, South Korea, and it is from time spent in my grandma’s house and her garden that I get my inspiration for the colors, shapes and atmosphere. The skin of the imaginary building is colored with direct or indirect associations with my logic of living in different parts of the world.

Acknowledging the responsibility to our own, I am exploring new avenues in eco printing. Extracting pigment from plants allows us to discover the hidden range of colors in nature, enabling us to generate fertile conversations around the evolution of non-toxic forms of printmaking.

Investigation of Exploration

My sculptures are built with clay, various glazes, plaster, wood, wire, fiber, and foil. I am interested in the relationship between organic form and human-made construction materials. When materials are pushed past their limitations and manipulated in ways not originally intended, an emphasis is placed on the process over the final product.

By combining unfamiliar materials with one another, it is hard to predict the end results. Instead, there is a focus on the material’s reaction to one another as these experiments progress. Unexpected beauty reveals itself in previously unseen ways. On its most basic level, my work transforms ordinary matter into something extraordinary.

Happy Haunts

Our thesis project is a collaborative short film trailer using the medium of 3D animation that showcases a naive young girl, house sitting a haunted house.

Despite its best attempts, the ghost inhabiting this home can’t seem to scare the girl. Conceptually, this piece was an exploration in character design, world building, timing, humor, and self-expression. Each team member brings a different interest in the process of designing the final animation, with the intense focus being translating dynamic poses in the body, to a kinetic, fluid form in an animation medium.

Aide Memoire

Aide-Memoire is a collage of monotypes and photographs.

Ink simultaneously builds and destroys the prints by way of caustic automatic drawings. This process emulates how anxiety and depression build and destroy memory.

The photographs are archives from family photos manipulated to remove color and details within the faces. The connection between the photographs and the prints reveal a similar manipulation and distortion of memory.

This project is dedicated to my mother.

This collection of songs, named after a Greek word for a divine breath, aim to allow the listener a chance to simply exist with their inner self for a period of time.

Encumbered/Erosion

I am interested in creating conversation about feelings associated with struggle, anxiety, and memory through material metaphors. Working primarily in sculpture and photography, I explore the balance between chaos and order. Often, I use reflective surfaces as a way to explore self reflection. Complex emotions lend meaning to complex forms. Finding difficulty in dealing with and understanding feelings at times, I create work that replicates this confusing and frustrating state of being.

Above all, the intricate process of creating is perhaps the most important part of my work, as learning what works together and problem solving with materials excites me.

Fovea

Fovea is a body of work that utilizes color theory, design principles, and optics to activate and question human perception and its fallibility. By engaging the perceptual consciousness of the viewer in an interplay of form and scale, these works use both harmonious and aggressive methods of color interaction to project an awareness of vision’s limitations. Calling upon the experience of seeing, Fovea facilitates a physiological response that is rooted entirely in the present.

Rest is seen as indulgent, even though it is necessary for our wellbeing. A goal I have set for myself is to spend time doing nothing, and I have found great value in “unproductive” thought. Allowing myself to experience my emotions and respond to them has pushed my art to center around empathy. I am interested in spaces and how they allow for moments of comfort, tenderness, safety, and rest. “sharing is caring” is a sculptural installation that takes shape as a communal dinner party. I am interested in the ephemeral quality of participatory performance and how involvement from others can shape the final piece. I have been thinking about the dinner table as a still life and how the composition will be deconstructed and reconstructed throughout the meal.

Bread As Metaphor

With the world moving faster every minute, I decided to counter the culture and slow down. I have adapted the phrase, ‘my life is my practice’ and started to live a slow life. This means living in the present, being attentive and purposeful with my time, and recognizing the everyday. This book includes my journey towards slow living along with deliverables that the reader can implement into their life. There is no judgment or gain for me depending on what the reader does; it truly is a way of life that I wish to share with others, with no stipulations.

Gender Is Dead

The social construct of gender is dead. The rules that society followed for so long are quickly becoming dismantled. Gender Is Dead explores the idea that queer people are unable to grow up as their true selves, but instead, a version that sacrifices authenticity in order to minimize prejudice and humiliation. This results in a massive task to unpack and discover the parts of our own identity that are sincere versus those fabricated for self-protection.

Phone is an audio-visual experience that explores the themes of life and death, particularly as it pertains to my experience as an only child and the sense of responsibility, I feel to stay alive for my mother’s sake. Orthographies

My work is made up of strategies toward fulfilling the need to know and understand the non-human other.

Its practice is one focused on mundane interactions and practical knowledge, borne from a commitment to closeness, to new forms of seeing, and to the use of the body as a tool and a lowest common denominator.

Orthographies is on its surface a diaristic mediation on companionship, cross-species empathy, and communication with a once-stray dog. I use this approach in order to make grander propositions regarding human-to-animal transformations, alternative languages, and new understandings of animal autobiography.

Symbiosis

Symbiosis is a documentation of the relationship between life and place. Each piece responds to a specific location. Through thoughtful observations, I discover and collect litter on site. In this instance, I define litter as anything left behind by a living organism, whether human trash or tree fallen leaves. I gather the materials as evidence of these organism’s time together and utilize them as the medium for my art-making process.

The results weave the differing materials together in a symbiotic gesture forming new artifacts.

Keeping the Wild, Wild

In an attempt to raise awareness about sustainability and conservation within America’s National Parks, I’ve opted to create an online guide to merge both facts and statistics with simplistic art and graphics to help the viewer understand the importance of conserving the parks. My choice of minimal art paired with pleasing earth - like colors is my way of directing your attention specifically to the facts that are laid out within the guide. Dear, Sincerely, fixates on the experience of my father’s passing. Addressing the archival and ephemeral nature of memory, loss, and grief, the work reflects on formulative experiences and the futility of future memories. By utilizing a darkroom approach of unfixed printing, images from my past exemplify the ephemerality of moments that are now lost. Through this process, the pictorial content actively diminishes as the photographs are further exposed to light.

Exhibiting these works alongside images that directly reference the lasting effects of his death, this body of work demonstrates my coping with temporality and honors the life of my father.

Recently, I have become entranced with perception, specifically the perception of myself in the world as a woman. I first became interested in this matter when I noticed that I put on what felt like a “performance� every day, the role depending on my interactions with people and my environment. I began to embark on a quest to discover my true self. While still in the discovery phase I also realized that I am not alone in my feelings. By means of abstraction, I create illusions of threedimensional spaces on a two-dimensional surface, drawing inspiration from graphic design sensibilities and op-art minimalism. These abstractions are interpreted visions from aerial views of the web-like intersections of highways which transform otherwise functional, banal constructions into colorful abstract spaces for aesthetic meditation, resulting in a mindful perception of beauty.

It’s Okay To Be Sensitive

My work explores the three-way interaction between people, language, and the space in which they meet. The language I use is encouraging and self-referential, both on the grounds of its materiality and location. I hope to help the viewer to feel seen, heard and comforted, provided with a moment to turn away from the chaos of everyday life. Life is hard—in fact, its the hardest thing you will ever face—and it is important to be reminded that we are still here, and that in itself is an accomplishment.

Complex

Complex describes the structure of my mind as proposed

by Sigmund Freud. Each character represents his theory that our minds are comprised of three sections: the Id (a self-destructive infant who navigates by learning what will and won’t kill it), the Super Ego (our conscience which develops as we learn), and the Ego (our sense of self which we project outward and use to navigate). These work together to help us survive. In this short, I discover these parts of myself in conflict, and attempt to understand them, so I can resume a normal life as one whole.

Framework

I create detailed, representational collages of windows and suburban scenes that speak to an impersonal American landscape. Without intimate details, all that remains are the architectural elements and the defining moments of light and darkness. The warm light and long shadows add a temporal element, signifying the setting of one stage and the rising of another. The materials give a sense of anonymity; the magazine pages depict an array of places and moments in time – memories that are not my own. The result is a quiet, contemplative look outside into the surrounding framework that feels simultaneously familiar and distant.

Parts of the Whole

The object exemplifies meticulous craft and multiplicity through the use of mixed media sculpture. The work reveals a manifestation of careful actions upon varying materials, just as I am the sum of my own actions. The final object is comprised of many round forms made from ceramic, wire, and fiber, all hanging from a single point. The accumulation of these forms creates a visual mass to evoke diligence in craft and composition in space.

The interactivity of the evening light within spaces, has long interested me. The ever-changing moments are filled with warmth, and comfort. Through photography, I capture these fleeting moments of time, where the setting sun lights the most intimate of spaces — my house.

Topoanalysis, defined by Gaston Bachelard, is the systematic psychological study of the sites of our intimate lives.

“The house” is therefore a place where the personal experience reaches its epitome.

Delineated State of Mind

This body of work evaluates varying perceptions of the physicality of my body through a series of layered drawings. I specifically rely on the blind contour technique for its inherently objective approach to drawing the subject, and remove the ability to look at my surface and impart judgment. I employ this technique to show a direct link from my brain’s ability to perceive, while my hand harmoniously makes marks. The continual line acts as a recording device for nuance. The differences that appear between the representations heighten a core truth to the subject.

Cathartic Candles provides relief to intense psychological emotions that surround personal matters of the heart. With each candle lit, an intention is set. As the flame’s warmth turns wax to to liquid, it offers a healing moment of transformation. In this moment, I visualize the intention continuing through the atmosphere to connect with the universe.

Not As She Is, but as She Fills His Dream

This work borrows language from historical paintings of women to discuss contemporary issues surrounding the relationship of the male gaze and the female form.

By utilizing a medium which normalizes a voyeuristic depiction of women, my work addresses current issues surrounding objectification of women. In particular, the work looks at how society places the burden on women to dress and behave ‘correctly’ in order to prevent sexual harassment. This work peels off the male gaze that limits a woman’s worth to mere visual pleasure.

Aware but Not Obligated

Together, the inability to stabilize the world, and our thirst for a sense of order produces a universal weight that everyone finds themselves bearing. In hopes that a process of uncovering and normalizing fear will allow us to move through our uncertainty, I use unstable spaces and arrangements as well as objects that encapsulate fear and fragility as means for practice. This practice allows viewers to become aware of these possibilities but not obligated by them, birthing a relationship between the viewer and the object that provides a space to unveil the awry on their own time.

At Home

This is my home.

In this interactive experience, I have created the forestry of my childhood home as I perceive it. The piece is built around the concept of distorting an environment to reflect an emotional view of it, allowing viewers to experience it as the artist does. The landscape within consists of 3D sculpts, 2D images, and digitally generated particle effects. The blend of 2D and 3D aesthetics work to seize authorship of an environment by shaping it to reflect the emotions inspired by its real-world space and suspend that space in a liminal state between realistic and artificial.
