Letter from the President GILLEA ALLISON President, D Home Gillea@dmagazine.com

SETTLING IN OCTOBER issue note from my home office? No, sure didn’t. Have I flourished during quarantine—taking up new hobbies, reading the great classics, cooking extravagant meals? Nope, not one of “those” people. But have my priorities come into focus, do I feel more at peace, and have I thoroughly enjoyed the slower pace of life at home? One hundred percent yes. The reason that acceptance is the last stage of grief is because it’s undoubtedly the hardest. To move beyond pain, anger, depression—haven’t we all gone through each of those stages, sometimes even during a single day while in quarantine? I think this issue is a great guide to the “settling in” phase we find ourselves in now. There is still beauty to be devoured, things to look forward to, and masterpieces to be created. We may just need to accept that we’ll be “here” for a while longer. So, let’s make the most of it, shall we? You may want to consider finally canceling that international plane

ticket and replace this year’s trip with a fabulous local getaway (inspiration abounds on page 66). Or perhaps you want to perfect socially distant, outdoor entertaining this fall; find ideas for a no-touch tailgate on page 34. And finally, once we accepted that our annual Best of Big D awards would need to be rethought due to COVID-19, the editors didn’t skip a beat and enlisted the help of D Home’s best designers, builders, and architects to pick their favorite design materials, furniture pieces, and more. If you’re having a hard time “accepting” your current abode or want to upgrade and elevate while you have the time, I highly recommend their expert choices, which you’ll find beginning on page 56. Please stay safe and enjoy,

A NEW ITINERARY THIS TIME ALMOST EVERY YEAR, I’M BUSY PLANNING AN OVERSEAS VACATION.

The trips are mostly personal, but they also provide me with so much of the professional inspiration I use to create these pages. Avid readers may remember the Haussmann-style living room that appeared on our cover in 2015—created entirely from locally sourced products—after my trip to Paris that December. (It also inspired former executive editor Laura Kostelny to don a beret for her editor’s note photo. Oui oui!) I returned from a Moroccan vacation in 2016 with a breadth of color and textural inspiration that lasted me for months. This year I celebrated a milestone birthday (a lady never reveals her age), an occasion that was supposed to be marked with a trip to Greece. I imagined crisp blues and whites gracing our pages, sea-inspired accessories, and guides to healthy living modeled after the

Mediterranean way of life. Instead, as with most things this year, our travel plans deteriorated. Instead of crossing the ocean, I’ve hardly left home. While I’ve struggled with stir craziness, more than that, I’ve found it difficult to find inspiration while largely housebound. But instead of letting it frustrate me, I’ve chosen to see it as a creative challenge: to seek inspiration in new ways and unexpected places. If I can’t go out and see the world, I’ll bring the world to my back yard. This issue contains plenty of ideas for how to do just that. Or if you’re craving a change of scenery, the two driveable rental properties in “Around the Bend” (pg. 66)—created by a pair of notable and creative Dallasites—would make inspiring escapes.

GARDENING FOR GOOD Love the idea of garden harvesting but haven’t got a clue where to begin? Pick up some pointers while serving the community at the much celebrated Bonton Farms in South Dallas, which provides fresh produce to an area that otherwise has very few healthy options for residents. Most any day of the week, you can volunteer on their 40-acre working farm, feeding animals, watering and planting crops, and gathering eggs. But the benefits of lending a hand here go far beyond greening your thumb. Says executive director Daron Babcock: “The growing of food and the raising of animals on a farm is healing. When we get to be in the presence of people that have suffered, their strength and resilience from what they’ve endured is contagious.” Visit bontonfarms.org or email volunteers@bontonfarms.org for opportunities.

“Salvage” Your Fall Garden

Starting a garden can be daunting, but Orr-Reed Wrecking Co. is making it easier by offering readymade kits with all the parts you need to build a planter box. (Not into DIY? They’ll even assemble it for you for a few extra bucks.) Choose from ground-level or raised 3’x5’ boxes, vertical planters for small spaces, or ones with adjustable lids to protect your plants from the cold. And because their planters are made from reclaimed wood, not only are they better for the planet than store-bought kits, they’ll last longer too. “Most planter kits you can buy in big-box stores are either plastic or tree-farmed wood,” says Orr Reed’s Hannah Hargrove. “It isn’t at the same caliber as old wood.” Starting at $45

TAKE IT OUTSIDE A sweet, individually sized treat perfect for small backyard gatherings. This recipe comes from Hand Made, a new cookbook by D Magazine executive editor Kathy Wise. Quarantine conditions forced Wise, a whiz in the kitchen and a frequent entertainer, to get creative with her culinary exploits: “As the world has changed, packing my dining table with people for informal dinner parties no longer made sense,” she says. “I needed a way to move the party outside, and I realized that if I came up with dishes, desserts, and batch cocktails that didn’t require utensils or a lot of fuss, I could entertain anywhere.” Her collection of more than 40 recipes are perfect for socially distant gatherings and backyard tailgates (see pg. 34). Available now at dmagazine.com/cookbook

Pâte Brisée: 2½ cups Barton Springs Mill allpurpose Red Blend “00” flour 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, frozen and cut into pieces ½–¾ cup ice water 1 egg beaten with a little water or milk and a pinch of salt for egg wash Plum Filling: ¼ cup sugar ¼ cup unsalted roasted almonds ¼ cup flour 4 plums, halved, pitted, and sliced ¼ teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons Demerara sugar, plus more for sprinkling 4 teaspoons unsalted butter 1. Make pâte brisée: Place flour, salt, and sugar in a food processor. Pulse to combine. Add butter pieces and pulse just until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, about 10 seconds. Add ice water in a slow, steady stream and pulse until the pastry just begins to hold together. 2. Divide dough evenly onto four pieces of plastic wrap. Pull up edges around dough and twist tightly to seal, pulling dough into a ball in the process. Flatten balls into disks, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. 3. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place ¼ cup sugar, ¼ cup almonds, and ¼ cup flour in a food processor. Pulse until ground into a fine flour. 4. On a floured surface, roll dough into 1/8-inch-thick rounds. Place on parchmentlined baking sheets and freeze. 5. In a bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of Demerara sugar with cinnamon. Set aside. 6. Spread 2-3 tablespoons of almond mixture into the center of each round. Toss plum slices with sugar and cinnamon and arrange over the almond mixture. Fold edges of dough over the plums leaving an opening in the middle. Place one teaspoon of butter on top. Arrange on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and return to freezer for 10 to 15 minutes. 7. Brush pastry with egg wash and sprinkle with Demerara sugar. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until plums are bubbling and pastry is golden brown.

You’re enjoying your evening al fresco when, suddenly, you get the itch—and not the good kind. Mosquitos can ruin any outdoor gathering, as can the many unsexy ways—greasy sprays, violent zappers, overpowering citronella—we commonly use to keep them at bay. Ettiene Market’s Coryanne Ettiene suggests a more natural and appealing alternative: “Palo Santo oils and resin smell toxic to mosquitos, so they avoid it,” she says. Available in several forms in her brick-and-mortar stores and ecommerce site, Ettiene advises: “Toss the chips in to an outdoor fireplace, burn the incense in your potted plants for a hidden waft of Palo, or light the sticks in pretty trays surrounding your table to create a wall of protection from these flying pests.” ettienemarket.com

IN FALL BLOOM Do you think of spring as the only time to grow your garden? Think again. “Fall is the best time for planting in North Texas,” says Glen Bonick of Bonick Landscaping. “Cooler days but still warm nights allow plants to start growing again after the long hot days of summer, where they tend ANNUALS Chrysanthemums Pansies Snapdragons Flowering kale Ornamental cabbage

LITTLE CORNER OF THE WORLD “Everything just kind of focused on this little area where we were, like our house and our yard,” Chris says. The family’s time at home has allowed them to explore every intimate detail of their space. Here, daughter Roxie reads in a cozy nook of the staircase while their pup, Dassie, looks on.

Slowing Down, Digging Deep How a Fort Worth family found the silver lining of sheltering in place. s to r y by H A L E Y A R N O L D p h o to g r a p hy by C H R I S A N D P E N N Y P L A V I D A L

IT WAS SHAPING UP TO BE A MEMORABLE SPRING BREAK FOR THE PLAVIDAL FAMILY—a getaway to New York would allow husband Chris and wife Penny to

revisit the state they formerly called home while also touring universities with their 18-year-old twin sons, Hank and Joe. But as the looming threat of COVID-19 crept closer and closer to the U.S., the family read the writing on the walls. At the last second, Chris and Penny canceled their trip and took their sons and 12-year-old daughter, Roxie, to a cabin in Oklahoma, where they were hit with the realization that they wouldn’t be returning to the same old life in Texas. “We kind of went from a million miles an hour every day from sunup to sundown, to everything just screeching to a halt,” Penny says. “Our world got really small.” As the family adjusted to their new normal, they shared the daily minutiae of quarantined life through social media. For Chris, a photographer, and Penny, a photo stylist and self-described chronic documenter, it was a natural—and needed—outlet, capturing creative projects, culinary experiments, and quiet moments on the porch. Chris admits it can sometimes be difficult to see the big picture. But they’re choosing to see the silver lining, using this slow pace of life to focus on what’s important and deepen their bonds. “So many people don’t have the time to hang out with their kids like they do right now,” he says. “I think that can be positive from all of this.” TURN FOR MORE OF THE PLAVIDALS’ QUARANTINE DIARIES >> D M AG A Z I N E . TIME TO OBSERVE While the Plavidals started quarantine with a hefty list of projects to tackle, their priorities shifted as time went on. Chris, who is also a musician, found inspiration a challenge. “One of my friends told me, ‘Sometimes it’s time to create, and sometimes it’s time to observe,’ ” he says. Penny notes that they have since shifted their focus to the latter: “I’m having a deep reevaluation of the places where I want to put my energy, and how where I’m putting my energy helps someone else,” she says.

splash of Aperol, then fill it with ice and top it off with ginger kombucha and it’s delicious. And it’s probiotic, so it’s healthy,” she laughs.

DRIVES AT DUSK Chris said early on in the lockdown, the best part of nearly every day was spent in Penny’s old truck, taking a quiet drive at dusk. “Sometimes the kids would lay on a blanket in the bed, looking up at the sky while we stuck to the neighborhood, and it became a drive to the river to see the sunset with a drink,” Chris says. “Small things became rituals and something to look forward to.”

SCHOOL’S OUT Chris and Penny say their kids have taken advantage of being out of school to explore hobbies of their own. One of the boys picked up skateboarding again, while the other is dedicated to writing a screenplay. Roxie started her own website and Instagram (@sunny_day.art) to sell her art and is donating a portion of the proceeds to Fort Worth nonprofit One Safe Place. “I’d have to say my kids have been an inspiration,” Penny says.

GREEN THUMB Penny has recruited the kids to help in planting the garden and taught them about the different plants they’re growing. As soon as it cools off, she’ll be planting bush beans, collards, Swiss chard, cabbage, peas, lettuce, and more. She also recommends planting herbs like oregano, parsley, thyme, and chives in the fall.

FEATHERED FRIENDS Chez Plavidal is also home to four chickens, whom Penny jokes provide the family’s new social life. Extended time at home has helped them discover the subtle nuances in each chicken’s personality. “We’ve had Pepper [pictured here] the longest,” Penny says. “She’s a hardy lady and rules the roost.”

>

WORK IT OUT “Do you know about the Ryan Heffington dance parties? That got us through the beginning of quarantine,” Penny says. She would get the whole family (though it took some convincing, she says) to participate in Ryan’s virtual workout dance parties. “It didn’t matter how down you felt going into it, when you got finished, it always lifted up the rest of the day.” For a bit of a mental workout, the Plavidals’ game of choice is Bananagrams.

HOME SWEET HOME The Plavidals’ house was built in 1908. The family purchased it 15 years ago and have been slowly making it their own while preserving its original character. “I can be guilty of personifying objects but it really does feel like she’s raised our kids alongside of us,” Penny says. “With five us of here, three of which are now teens, we fill her spaces and she houses us gracefully, which has never been more obvious than during quarantine.”

Indeed, it was the views to the outdoors that ultimately sold the homeowners to purchase it. “It was truly driven by the experiential nature of the outside experiences—sitting inside looking out,” says Dorsey. The eggplanthued sofa was at the request of Andrea, who wanted her favorite color, purple, incorporated throughout. Dorsey encouraged his clients to forgo an all-white kitchen and instead paint the millwork in Farrow & Ball Studio Green no. 93 to better balance the purple. A “Sully” Lacanche range, Dornbracht “Tara Ultra” faucet, and Waterworks hardware round out the space.

ifteen years ago, when MORE Design + Build was a burgeoning business, founders Chad Dorsey and Kurt Bielawski got a call from a pair of young homeowners who were newly married and just starting a family. The couple—Paul and Andrea Johnston—had spent a year looking at houses in Lakewood, including one early in their search that they felt had too many issues to consider. “It was a mess,” Paul remembers. “Bad floorplan, bad everything.” Once they found an intriguing prospect, a friend referred them to Bielawski and Dorsey, who suggested they meet at a house they’d just finished remodeling. “When we walked up, we realized it was the house we had passed on but Chad hadn’t,” says Paul, who marveled at the before and after. “He solved everything in a simple, casual, and elegant way.” They teamed up to update their Dines and Kraft–built Cape Cod Colonial, where Paul, Andrea, and their two children lived happily for the next 12 years. When it came time to give the house another refresh, Paul reached out once more to Dorsey—now an acclaimed interior designer, and MORE an in-demand firm with projects all over the country—this time looking for a recommendation for someone willing to take on a project of their size. To his surprise, Paul recalls, “Chad said, ‘Yes…me. I’d love to work with you again.’ ” The plans that developed would’ve required the family to move out for more than a year, prompting them to see what else was on the market. A stone-covered contemporary in East Dallas caught their eye. Though a total departure from their typical style, the home’s three courtyards and lush, half-acre lot helped seal the deal. Says Bielawski of the appeal: “The house had great natural light and the spaces all perfectly framed views of the outdoors. It really fit their personality and lifestyle and what they wanted their next chapter to be.” Over the course of a year-long renovation, Bielawski and Dorsey were able to blend Paul’s penchant for clean, uncluttered lines and natural light with Andrea’s “cozy, comfy” style. The one through line, Dorsey says, was bringing the outside in. “It was truly driven by the experiential nature of the outside experiences,” Dorsey says CONTINUED ON PAGE 54 >>

A custom Studio CDD banquette with Élitis upholstery (topped with a pillow from Magic Hour) and Saarinen dining chairs provide ample seating for the family, but the table can accomodate eight. opposite page: Andrea, a frequent cook, wanted a place for everything in the compact but ultra-functional kitchen, so every cabinet and drawer were planned before construction began. this page: Dorsey’s philosophy on bedrooms? “It needs to be soothing and inspiring but also relaxed.” He also likes to give these sanctuary spaces a sense of luxury—but stresses that doesn’t have to equal fancy: “Luxury can be the quality of the material of the bedding and the feel of the rug.” In the owner’s suite, a Theodore Alexander bed is flanked with Urban Electric sconces. of the design plan. “How can we honor the architectural nature of the house, and the landscape-architectural nature of the house, but recreate the experience inside for how they want to live?” They embraced the views to the outdoors, strategically opened up spaces, and leaned into the home’s mountain-lodge-like feel while simultaneously lightening and brightening it, utilizing natural materials, adding light wide-plank hardwood floors throughout, and smoothing the walls to a museum finish. In the living room, the stained wood ceiling treatment was painted white and the fireplace was modernized (see sidebar, right). Andrea had two main requests: lots of purple, her favorite shade (which Dorsey gamely delivered), and a kitchen with ample stor-

age to facilitate her frequent cooking. While the floorplan didn’t allow for an overabundance of cabinetry, some careful planning— “We defined where everything would go, down to the plastic wrap,” Dorsey says—and extra square footage allocated to the pantry (made possible by the removal of the front staircase) meant the succinct space was more than functional. “They basically proved to us that we didn’t need all the space that we thought we needed,” Andrea says. The comfortable yet clean result suits the family perfectly. “One of Chad’s biggest strengths is that he can pull off a natural, casual, and comfortable elegance that doesn’t feel forced,” says Paul. “The design is really focused on how the four of us live together.”

STRIKING OUT AFTER YEARS OF FRUITLESS SEARCHES FOR MODERN MANTLES, Chad Dorsey decided it was time to take matters into his own hands. “I found myself always designing custom fireplaces for my projects, because there were not many options for sleek, clean fireplaces,” he says. Thus STRIKE was born: a collection of mantels inspired by the topography and textures of California, available to consumers and the trade via Chad Dorsey Design Studio. The mantels—each named for a California town that embodies Dorsey’s “relaxed luxury” aesthetic—are fully customizable: Choose from seven profiles, nine stone options, and three finishes. —Haley Arnold

STRIKE’s modern shapes and natural materials were inspired by California, like the Sausalito (right) and Malibu (below).

The cork wall is both fun—“He can pin up all his posters and artwork,” says Dorsey—but also functional, adding some sound absorption to the

space. “You don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money on kids’ spaces to make them really cool,” Dorsey says. “I think it’s really important for kids to be involved in their selection because it’s their space.” Visitors can feel right at home in the guest suite, furnished with a Jeffrey Bernett + Nicholas Dodziuk bed, Aerin swing-arm sconce, and an art piece—a map of the White Rock Lake area—that belonged to the homeowners.

f anyone understands the snowball effect that good design, a little strategic styling, and the magic of marketing can have, it’s Amber Venz Box. Now the founder of rewardStyle—the platform that effectively launched the influencer industry overnight—is applying her aesthetic approach to real estate. WHERE: Maverick Mountain, above Terlingua, Texas DISTANCE FROM DALLAS: 576 miles

Box and her husband and business partner, Baxter, discovered the ghost town of Terlingua seven years ago on a road trip through West Texas. The couple fell in love with the area, which is on the Western boundary of Big Bend National Park. The remoteness was at the heart of its appeal. “It’s such a unique experience from what we get in Dallas,” Box says. “Almost everyone lives off the grid and there’s just this ability to start from scratch out there.” They found themselves returning often and decided to create an oasis that could serve as both a getaway for their growing family and a means of

introducing their favorite escape with others. The isolated nature of the area meant simply sourcing materials and crews for construction was a challenge. The solution was shipping in low-footprint, ready-to-build yurts that could be easily assembled with local labor. Dubbed The Local Chapter, the development boasts five luxe yurts—the Box family’s private dwelling and four that they rent out—each designed with comfort and relaxation in mind. The yurts are spaced across a 392-acre mesa, providing guests with unobstructed, 360-degree views of the national park. Each is outfitted with an CONTINUED ON PAGE 70 >>

outdoor fire pit, plush Stori Modern outdoor furniture, and a telescope for stargazing—though being so far removed from city lights, you hardly need one. Inside, Box created inviting sanctuaries using as many Texas-based products as possible. Each 573-square-foot yurt boasts a king bed, indoor fireplace, large bathroom with oversized shower, cozy reading nooks, and an assortment of creature comforts (read: Dyson supersonic hair dryers). “It is really something for the design-minded adventurer,” she says. With plans for more destinations in the works, The Local Chapter has become deeply personal for the Box family. Whether it be hiking, stargazing, or floating in the river, it offers them a place of solitude to reflect and reconnect. “My oldest, who’s 4 and a half, loves archery, and we collect rocks,” Box says. “It’s things that you don’t find yourself doing in a city that are so simple.”

HIT THE ROAD

BOX SHARES HER ROAD TRIP ESSENTIALS

Home Away from Home Box’s tips for making your rental property really shine. Live in your space.

“By being your own guest, you can really observe what’s missing,” Box notes. Spend a weekend on property and take notes of your stay— then, identify opportunities to improve and refine.

Create an experience people want to talk about.

“Referrals make the best guests because they show up excited about what they are about to experience,” she says.

Help your guests experience the local flavor.

“There’s nothing like a tour from a local,” says Box, who provides city guides with tips on what to see, where to eat, and what to order.

Give it up for the ‘Gram.

Though Box encourages guests to unplug, she knows social media is key to business generation. She fosters content creation with Instagrammable moments and decor, with plenty of inspiration via The Local Chapter’s own Instagram account (@thelocalchapter): “I’m showing people how to see the space and the potential memories they might want to create,” she says.

atalie Taylor Cross isn’t a minimalist. In fact, quite the opposite. “I live kind of like a European,” she says. But when building a vacation home in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, the creative behind Your House or Mine ceramics decided it was the perfect opportunity to try out a different type of lifestyle. “The whole lifestyle appeals to me. So I was like, this will be a good way to experiment with that.”

WEBSITE crosslandinvestmentsllc.com WHERE: Broken Bow, Oklahoma DISTANCE FROM DALLAS: 169 miles

The simple approach fits well within the landscape of Beavers Bend State Park, a scenic region of southeast Oklahoma just 170 miles from Dallas, where the natural beauty and ample outdoor attractions foster a slower pace of living. Cross and her husband, Scott, were first introduced to the area more than 20 years ago. They loved the boating, fishing, and hiking that the area had to offer. (Plus, she adds, “It’s always about five to 10 degrees cooler than DFW.”) So they bought up 280 acres of land in 2000, selling bits here and there, before finally deciding to build a retreat of their own in 2018. Wanting to differentiate it from the many log-cabin-style rentals in the area, Cross went with a less-is-more approach, with bright white walls, simple furnishings, and lots of windows to see to the forested land outside. “I wanted it to be very minimal and Scandinavian,” she says. “Like when you get out there, you are just kind of enveloped by the nature around you.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 75 >>

Your House or Mine Cross offers her tips for appealing to renters. Dare to be different.

Cross suggests researching what rental options are available in your area and then doing something unique. “Try to set yourself apart,” she says.

Build a following.

“As soon as you start the building process, start an Instagram and start branding yourself right away,” she advises, noting that Instagram is the main way people discover their property.

Cross furnished the space with vintage finds, including a retro cone fireplace that heats the entire home (a Craigslist find), a kilim sofa she bought from a neighbor, and a Bulthaup stainless steel kitchen counter with an integrated sink that was salvaged from the Neiman Marcus test kitchen. Unfinished pine frames windows and doors to echo the beauty of the natural surroundings. The spacious patio has a gas fireplace and no shortage of firewood. One thing noticeably absent? A television. The project has spurred Cross to take on other projects in the area, including an A-frame she recently completed and sold. That’s meant she’s spent most weekdays in the cabin, but the space is consistently rented out on weekends. She notes that the recent pandemic has only fueled travel to the area. “The metroplex has always driven Beavers Bend, and it’s just not slowing down,” Cross says. “I just read a report that bookings are up 145 percent.” Not only has the change of scenery proven a welcome break from Cross’ day-to-day life back in Dallas—so, too, has the simpler way of life. So much so, in fact, that it’s begun to rub off. “Since building the house and staying there so much, our home in Dallas is becoming more minimal,” she says. “It’s just nice and easy.”

DESIGN

The year 2020 has taught us many things. Among them, home is our sanctuary and much more than a place to retreat at the end of a busy day. Home is now where many of us also work, teach, exercise—and decorate and redecorate. Soon enough, our homes will regain their role as a destination for entertaining and welcoming friends and family. Thanks to the Dallas Design District, you’ll be ready. There has never been a better time to elevate your space, whether to repurpose a few rooms or to create a refreshed and updated look. Whatever your design goals, the Dallas Design District has every resource available. In fact, the Dallas Design District has experienced a refresh itself and is open and ready for you to explore and safely shop. Known worldwide as a leader in design resources, particularly the complex dubbed the Dallas Design Center which house some of the most notable local and national names in

“NOW MORE THAN EVER, OUR HOMES ARE OUR SANCTUARIES, AND DESIGNERS ARE WORKING WITH CLIENTS TO REFRESH THEIR INTERIORS. THE DISTRICT IS A SOURCING DESTINATION LIKE NO OTHER.” JAMES ARSIN, ARSIN RUG GALLERY

the industry, the Dallas Design District is where those in the know source coveted furnishings, antiques, art, textiles, hardware, lighting, rugs— everything required to transform a room…or an entire home. The Dallas Design District has carved out an identity all its own and has become a critical asset in the cultural fabric of Dallas. When you shop the Dallas Design District, you feel as if you have discovered your own little secret—a special place filled with endless treasures. It is one of Dallas’ most beloved, historical, and stylish enclaves, where you will find namesake interior design showrooms, art galleries, fine dining, luxury urban apartment homes, and the long-awaited Virgin Hotels Dallas. Bill Hutchinson, founder and president of Dunhill Partners and general partner of the Dallas Design District, says one positive thing that emerged from the pandemic is a reminder of the importance of home. “We got the opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with our immediate family members and our homes,” he says. “We have been living such fast-paced lives, especially here in Dallas, that we forgot to stop and smell the roses. We did not have time to sit in the various rooms in our homes and actually look at them—seriously look at them as if for the first time—and enjoy them. We now realize how much our homes make us happy—not only as in comfortable and cozy or as in the roof over our head clichés—but as the place we want to be. Our nest.” For these reasons, Hutchinson says, Dallas is fortunate to have the Dallas Design District. “Just to reflect for a minute on the abundance of home furnishings, fabrics, fixtures, materials, lighting, art, and the presence of so many talented designers to bring it all together right

“THE DALLAS DESIGN DISTRICT IS A GREAT COMMUNITY OF HIGH-END BRANDS AND CRAFTSPEOPLE. IT IS WELL DEVELOPED, AND CONVENIENT ACCESS ALLOWS HOMEOWNERS TO SHOP IN AN EASY-TO-NAVIGATE AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT.”

here in our backyard is shocking,” he says. “With so much time spent thinking about our next room project, expansion, remodel, redecoration, or our next move, thank goodness the Dallas Design District is just minutes away!” Showrooms in the Dallas Design District have placed a strong focus on safety, from sanitation efforts and social distancing regulations to limiting the number of shoppers and other safety policies. Showrooms, by nature, are rather large and CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK expansive, which is good news for shoppers who are ready to venture out. “The mere fact that they need so much room to display all their beautiful products ensures a safe browsing and shopping environment,” Hutchinson says. “The design showrooms, art galleries, restaurants, and hotels in the Dallas Design District have been and remain open for your convenience and pleasure. With our homes now taking center stage in our lives, now is a great time to visit the Design District and bring that wish, thought, vision, or plan to life.” The Dallas Design District still offers its longtime, go-to showrooms and entertainment destinations, with a few new surprises added to the mix. Right in the center of the Dallas Design District is the new Virgin Hotels Dallas, a beautiful, artistic creation of local architects, designers, builders, and artists. Hutchinson says it was designed to be an immersive experience with sensory overload, where you can go for a cocktail or meal at The Commons Club, or for a luxurious staycation. Not to be missed is the new Molteni&C showroom in the Decorative Center, specializing in contemporary Italian furniture and textiles, and Accessory Concierge, which relocated from its longtime spot on Lovers Lane. Brown Jordan recently completed its new 11,500-square-foot outdoor

furniture showroom near the hotel, and coworking office, WorkLodge, is now open on Dragon Street and ready for entrepreneurs in search of a cool environment to do business. The Dallas Design District remains a coveted dining destination in Dallas and will soon claim Carbone, conceived by New York’s Major Food Group. Conveniently located in the Decorative Center, it has long been recognized as one of the finest restaurants in the Uinted States with longtime locations in New York and Las Vegas— and now Dallas. “The Design District is one of the most significant and important neighborhoods in Dallas, because it consists of hundreds of furniture, fixture, material, and appliance showrooms that bring thousands of visitors and millions of dollars into the Dallas economy every year,” Hutchinson says. “The people who own the showrooms, galleries, and businesses have a true passion for the work and beauty they create and sell. The cool art galleries, trendy restaurants, and world-class museums have drawn thousands to the district, which is not duplicated anywhere else. Dallas is so fortunate to still have a thriving and successful design district, and it’s imperative we continue to support it.”
