Season of Celebrations Smile often. Be happy. Laugh loudly. Celebrate. The months of October, November and December are known for festivities. Just when we are done with Garba during Dushera, the festival of lights welcomes us and Halloween says hello. This will be followed by the jingle bells month of Christmas and the most awaited New Year.
I still cherish the memories I had with my club members in 2015 when I joined Toastmasters. It is time for you to build those moments of joy and celebrations. Enjoy this newsletter and do share your feedback!
While you celebrate these moments with your family, you can also bond with your extended family of Toastmasters by having themed meetings for fun. As our founder Ralph Smedley said, "We learn the best in the moments of enjoyment". Try to have these meetings, build camaraderie and most importantly learn new skills.
Dr. Nishant S Mehta, DTM Chief Editor, Communicate 98
CONTENT CURATOR OF THE MONTH "We are a culture of festivals. A way to celebrate all aspects of life." Sadhguru It is the season of festivals and celebrations. We celebrate many festivals with pomp which has evolved into a way of life. Culture is a heritage influenced by social norms, traditional customs, religious beliefs, ethical values entwined with significance followed by generations as the legacy.
Venkatraman B TCS Maitree Hyderabad Toastmasters Club
Most of the festivals commemorate annually based on the seasons and the relevance prevalent to specific regions which helps in maintaining the buoyancy culminating to entertainment with gaiety and pompous. Toastmasters clubs of different regions celebrated the season of festivals with the themes which were distinct. Every moment of the festivities had the beauty of the enchantment brimming with zeal and energy. Wish all the Toastmasters celebrated all the festivals with great enthusiasm and continue to toast.

The Meaning of "Dhan" Dhanteras is the first day of the festival of Diwali and an auspicious day for buying gold, silver, and other metals especially kitchenware. It is believed that acquiring ‘Dhan’ or wealth in the form of a precious metal is a sign of good luck. So millions of Indians do just that, as we worship Goddess Lakshmi, the giver of 'Dhan' (inner and outer wealth). It is also a day when we light oil-filled diyas (lights) at the entrance to our homes to safeguard us from sudden calamities. It is also a day when we pray to Lord Dhanvantari, the god of ayurveda, to keep us in good health.
But what does ‘Dhan’ or ‘Wealth’ mean to each one of us? To me personally, ‘Dhan’ is not about the acquisition of material wealth, but rather, about these 3 things: Good health – Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘It is health that is the real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver’. I too believe that being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the ultimate wealth at all times and more so in these trying times of the pandemic. What could be better than to be able to go for a walk and get some fresh air everyday, to think positively, to meditate or to help a friend in need?
Knowledge – Socrates said, ‘Wealth is transitory whereas knowledge is perpetual’. Think about it. If you had a lot of wealth and happened to lose it, it would hurt, but you could always regain it with knowledge and skills. Knowing things also gives people confidence, joy and happiness which money can’t buy. It is the only thing that multiplies when you give it away… and how satisfying is that? Family and Friends – I think everyone will agree that family and friends are the most important thing in everyone’s life. Whether they stand by us in rough times or are instrumental in our joy and success, they are like the sunlight. There is a saying, ‘It’s not what we have in life, but who we have in life, that matters’. Friends and family are our biggest and most precious 'Dhan'. So dear Toastmasters, I hope that for you too, ‘Dhan’ means being in good health, being able to appreciate nature, learning new things and having the most loving friends and family. I wish you all a joyous festive season. Stay safe!

PQD'S MESSAGE
DISTRICT 98
Diwali - The Festival of Joy and Lights Few days back, we celebrated Diwali - the festival of Joy and Lights. We have all gone through a very tough time in last 1.5 years. Many of us haven’t still got back to our normal life, leave aside celebrating festivals. But no matter wherever we are; we keep our hopes high and look forward for the best to come.
Diwali teaches us to begin anew; it reminds us about the renewed hope and a fresh start, after every period of trial. If you have faced tough times over the last few months, remember there is an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and begin afresh. The festival of lights might not be a new year, but it nevertheless marks a time of rebirth and resolution. Diwali also teaches us to be grateful; one of the abiding traditions of Diwali, much like Thanksgiving and Christmas, is getting together with loved ones and sharing laughter, goodwill and being grateful for the loved ones we have. It’s a time of much joy. Yet, we often forget to express gratitude for all we have. Instead, we often fixate on the negative, which affects not only our productivity but our personal lives.
If you’re aiming for the best at Toastmasters, work and home, then one of the most important lessons from Diwali is always to be grateful for what you have and channel that gratitude into impacting others. Toastmasters too gave us an opportunity to begin anew by announcing the improved Level 1 for all Paths. It’s time for us to start a new journey with the new level to bring better experience in Toastmasters. Also, as we complete Term1 of Program year 2021-22, we have a big task coming to us of electing the New Club Leaders for Term 2. This is the perfect time to thank and celebrate our past club leaders by telling them how grateful we are to them for serving our clubs in these tough times. On behalf of whole PQD Team, I thank all our club officers for their efforts and service to the clubs. Also, a big shout out to all members who are continuing their journey of learning and excellence with Toastmasters.

CGD'S MESSAGE
DISTRICT 98
Celebrate your Failures Festivals form an important part of our lives. They come in various kinds and forms. Some festivals are cultural, some national and some religious. Despite the various kinds in which they come, they all mean one thing and that is “celebration”. They bring us together in the spirit of brotherhood and togetherness and remind us there is a lot of good in the world that we live in. They come at the right time to break the monotony bring some cheer into our lives. India is a land of festivals, where people from different religions coexist harmoniously. The wide variety of festivals celebrated in India is a true manifestation of its rich culture and traditions. Having completed my schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, I always got an opportunity to meet and learn from teachers and students who got transferred from various other states of India irrespective of the region or direction. I used to celebrate one festival in at least three different ways. That’s the beauty of harmony I experienced in my childhood. When I started my professional journey, I was completely missing these community celebrations. It was limited to only four walls and four family members.
Celebrate your failures, they are what make you “Special”
I started feeling back the essence of festivities when I joined Broadridge Toastmasters Club which happens to be my first club. But this time I started experiencing quite opposite to what has been instilled in my mind already. There was a Dasara themed meeting and everything was amazingly organized until the networking session started for which members were keen to begin. Members and Guests were curious to listen to fellow members criticism and feedback in a highly positive environment. Adding to that, enjoying the delicious festive snacks with a broad smile on their face. As I continued to join club meetings, I assimilated the concept of continuous learning from failures in an environment of brotherhood by coming together and believing that there is a lot of good in the world that we live in is also a festival. Exploring leadership opportunities, contesting, and attending conferences beyond club brought diversified members across world with multiple traditions and concept of festivity together to me. Leverage this platform to grow where you will be welcomed to fail and celebrate it with the learnings as a festival beyond home, family and global boundaries and become a Special version of yourselves.

In conversation with
Ms. Komal Lath Founder - Tute Consult
‘Tute Consult’ is an integrated communications agency with PR at the heart of it. How did your journey begin? Tute was started 11 years ago with a vision that there are agencies, and there are clients. But there's nobody really trying to understand what the clients want, and instead, focus on just selling the same cookie-cutter approach. We wanted to do something which is more solution-based, rather than problem-based. It was a little shift in that perspective that helped us build what we are today. Tute continues to be the front-runner in the communications space where integrated is concerned, as a boutique agency. We bring a lot of agility to the table while thinking and innovating within the mechanisms, to keep pushing our angle.
‘How would you say does communications and PR work together? Look at communications like a large ocean – You need the water, fish, oxygen, and the plants. Similarly, communications is also large ocean wherein there are lots of tides, waves, sea animals, and plants in the form of advertising, events, digital marketing, performance marketing, public relations, influencers, content creation, and a lot more. It all comes together when you have the right vision to bring it together. In today's time especially, we're dealing with human capital and not machines; it is more emotion, opinion, and influence led. That's where the genesis of integrated communications came about. PR as a word is understood as Press Relations, which is not the case! It's very strategic, absolutely outcome-based, and together with content creation, commerce, creativity, and communications is a completely different ball game!

INDUSTRY LEADER Marketing is also an extended version of the communications vertical. What would you recommend professionals in the aspect of skill building for the marketing domain? One of the key things to do is read and write well. There is no shortcut to being able to be articulate, irrespective of whether you are in a B2B or B2C space, or a solopreneur. The fine art of being able to communicate via written and verbal is a huge bonus today. That's something non-negotiable as a marketeer or as a communications professional. It could be in any language, but you need to master that; the written and the oral, with confidence and fluency. The second skill which I would heavily recommend is have coffee with right people, across different sectors! It’s very important to constantly engage with people, not in terms of WhatsApp and text messages, but network with one-on-one human interactions. And three is to be a human sponge – Soak in everything in anything, but also start saying “No” to things that take away your time or aren’t not worth it. Here, worth does not mean money, but learning. At Toastmasters, content is the king when preparing a speech. Similarly, in PR, messaging is the key. How would you say is a good way to create the right messaging?
DISTRICT 98
That’s the basic difference between a WhatsApp text and being able to pick up the phone and communicate the emotion. Messaging is at the heart of everything and you have to think about the receiver, how they will perceive it. Focus on understanding what the receiver will see and not what the writer wishes to communicate. How do you think Toastmasters can help professionals in the PR industry to improve upon their communications? The idea of public speaking, of being able to be articulate, the right pauses, the right speech; in the space of communications, these are very necessary skills. It would be lovely to see people joining Toastmasters to be able to first understand where they stand in the journey of being able to communicate, and then, mastering it over a period of time. Not only communications, it also impacts confidence building! The whole idea of being able to say what you want to; a lot of people have voices, but they aren't able to communicate. Toastmasters can be a great enabler to that.
A parting message for our District 98 Toastmasters fraternity? Don't stop learning, keep trying till you get it! Work on the basics first and then the enhancers; don't miss out on the foundation steps.
By knowing what sector you have to work on and proficiently using the language in terms of words and grammatically correct sentence constructions.

Being Human AGAIN! - Covered by Vinod Basalalli
In March 2020, COVID hit us, changing the world around us. Physical meetings were curtailed and clubs had to move to a virtual setting. Zoom, Meet, Teams, WebEx became part of our life and ‘Am I audible?’ ‘Am I visible?’ became the most spoken phrase.
Am I Audible? Am I Visible? Fast forward to October 2021, the situation has improved greatly in terms of vaccinations and lower reported cases. This has led to many clubs to slowly explore the option of Hybrid meeting. A Hybrid meeting takes the best aspects of a physical and virtual meeting, catering to both types of audience. Like any new experience, this format of meeting too brings with it challenges and learning opportunities. We spoke to a few clubs and members of District 98 to understand the best ways to transition to hybrid meetings. Mayuri Assudani, DTM, from Loyal Toastmasters Club, Nagpur says, “Many of the club’s members are in Nagpur and open to the idea of meeting physically, but some members wanted to join the meeting virtually. The Hybrid model has helped us in addressing the needs of both these groups. The club conducted a hybrid meeting in February 2021 which was well received by the club members."
Like any other meeting, proactive preparation is required to ensure that the hybrid meeting is enjoyable. Gunjan Banarsi, President, Gurukul Education Toastmasters Club says, “Awareness of local COVID guidelines and regulations, internet connectivity, meeting apparatus and participants orientation is crucial for the success of a hybrid meeting.” The buy-in from the club members of course is paramount. Swarangi Naiksatam, VP Education, Toastmasters Club of Pune West says, “We discussed with our club members about hybrid meetings and decided on its frequency.” Since Hybrid Meetings needs both the physical and virtual set up to work in tandem, technology is a key element to ensure the meeting experience is seamless. With technological advancements, finding the right mix for the setting becomes important. Aadhitya Narayan, President, Aundh Toastmasters Club says, “Internet connectivity, video/audio quality are important things for a hybrid meeting. We explored multiple options for video (DSLR, Mobile and Webcam) and audio (microphone, speakers)] and determined the apparatus that was easily available and worked well in a hybrid setting. "For internet connectivity we used mobile internet, for video & audio we used mobile camera with a microphone attachment and desktop and projector for streaming of feed of the digital audience.

Identifying role players and their preparation is key for the success of hybrid meetings. Shobhit Dutta from Deloitte Hyderabad Toastmasters Club says “We try to balance the role player allocation and ensure that they are well oriented before the actual meeting.” In addition, the importance of zoom masters and SAA increases significantly during hybrid meetings. Abbas Akbar of SoBo Toastmasters Club says, “Having separate Zoom masters for managing online and physical medium made our meeting flow easier and transitions seamless.”
Clubs like Raipur Toastmasters Club, Bibwewadi Toastmasters Club, Pune Advanced Toastmasters Club, Gurukul Education Toastmasters Club, Aundh Toastmasters Club, Deloitte Hyderabad Toastmasters Club, Toastmasters Club of Pune West, Toastmasters Club of Pune Entrepreneurs, SoBo Toastmasters have conducted hybrid meetings and many others have plans in place for the same. In conclusion, Hybrid meetings is an option worth exploring and is certainly going to be the bridge to finally moving to entirely physical meetings.

Festival - A Celebration of Life Festival is a celebration of life. It brings peace and joy to the masses and breaks the monotony of life. Festivals promote diversity, they bring neighbours into dialogue, they increase creativity, they offer opportunities for civic pride, they improve our general psychological well-being. They are meant to rejoice special moments and emotions in our lives with our loved ones. They play an important role to add structure to our social lives, and connect us with our families and backgrounds. Festivals are the profound aspect of our life; that is why it is celebrated with grandeur because nobody should miss the essence and the meaning concealed behind its celebration.
Bibvewadi Toastmasters Club celebrated the moments of happiness with Theme “Festive Vibes”. I personally enjoyed the meeting. I was glad to see some of the people who attended last meeting coming again this meeting. And enjoyed meeting new people. I felt that the happiness with festivals part was really well represented and we got a nice balance between celebrations and more guest’s interactions. The presentations throughout the meeting covered a wide range of topics and yet were all connected by our common interests. The speakers got adequate time to share and discuss their work. A wonderful meeting brought together toastmasters all over the world. They enjoyed a lot with colours of Indian Festivals. The atmosphere was filled with zeal and happiness.
