From playing with numbers to juggling with lingo It's my learning journey! What about you? Hello, Jai Jinendra, Namaste, Sat Sri Akal, Kem Cho, As-salamu Alaykum! “My name is Nishant and I am the District 98 Newsletter Editor for the Toastmasters Year 2021-22.” Somehow, I feel amused and astonished at the same time to be making this claim! Being a Chartered Accountant by profession, an Entrepreneur and an MBA in Finance, it has been a joy ride to lean in and dive into the roles that the Toastmasters fraternity has offered me. From being the District Finance Manager to an Area Director in the past, each role has only left me with profound learnings. And, I must say that this role is going to be a challenge as well; one that I aspire to achieve.

To a Strong, Sustainable and Successful tomorrow It is wonderful to begin another Toastmasters year with loads of gratitude and a ray of hope. I am thankful to every member of District 98 for showing courage, resilience, enthusiasm and empathy, in making the past twelve months ‘worth it’. I feel proud that as a large community of Toastmasters, we stayed the course and made our District Distinguished. It is truly commendable. I hope that we will continue with the same spirit of joy and determination. My vision for the coming year is simple... to be Strong, Sustainable, Successful.
"Being Strong, Successful and Sustainable is a choice we need to make"
What does it mean to be Strong? We need to develop the right attitudes, uphold the core values of our organization and never give up or give in. We need to help, guide and support one another while doing projects, work in teams, encourage our fellow members to be better. This is what will give us strength, keep us united, keep us interested. It will help us grow our numbers in clubs so that we can enjoy better participation and with it, better learning.
Effort is required to remain Sustainable. Good quality meetings will be key. We will need to introduce variety in our meetings conduct joint events and establish a sense of camaraderie and friendship. We don’t need to be competitive, except at contests. We need to instead focus on the individual member’s purpose for being a Toastmaster, for remaining a Toastmaster. Success will follow. If we create strong individuals, sustain our clubs and community, success will be a given. But it will need the collective will of members. As leaders we will need to motivate and inspire, set the right tone and lead by example. Being Strong, Sustainable and Successful is a choice. We will need to make that choice so that we can transition effortlessly into 3 Districts next year. So let us reflect on, reassess and rework our goals for the coming year. Let us join hands to do better and be better. “Nothing is impossible to a willing mind” ~ Chinese proverb Stay safe, stay strong.

Tough times don't last, tough people do... Whenever I’ve felt low in life, these words from the movie Rocky Balboa come to my rescue “The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life…” So much has been expressed about the hardships of the global pandemic. What seemed like a distant statistic on paper in the first wave, hit a different story home in the second wave. It felt closer, more real, more personal. Every single family and organization felt the brunt of it – and Toastmasters International was no exception; clubs floundered, members lost momentum, leaders operated in ambiguity. It was easier to give up, to give in, to convince ourselves – such is life. Yet, that is not what was happening on the ground. Stories were emerging in pockets – about resurgence, revival, and resilience.
Looking at the list shocked me – despite one of the most challenging years, the numbers for member accomplishments were positively staggering. We had broken and set many new records in terms of club growth, distinguished clubs, education goals, etc. and soon, we all experienced that ultimate moment of pride District 98 became Distinguished for 2020-21! It was all possible only due to your indomitable will to succeed, despite all odds. “… How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!” The stories of resilience in this newsletter have been curated with the purpose to inspire and invigorate you. Hopefully, reading this newsletter will lift you up, help you to “keep moving forward” and staying resilient in the face of the unknown. Remember, tough times do not last, tough people do. I wish you a successful Toastmaster year!

In conversation with Suganthi Periasamy, DTM Region 13 Advisor TCS Maitree Chennai Toastmasters Club What brought you to Toastmasters? Can you walk us through your journey of Toastmasters? A serendipitous accident! A senior faculty mentioned "Toastmasters" during a Business Communication session at work. On searching, I found that it is a place where people deliver speeches. I called up the closest club to a lukewarm response and then forgot about it completely. In September 2010, the club President enrolled me as a member to help the club achieve the Smedley Membership Building award, and it was then that I attended my first meeting! After the meeting, I felt Toastmasters wasn't the right place for me as I neither was an extrovert, nor comfortable in making my life’s stories public. My decision to quit took a U-turn due to the persuasion skills of my mentor Oommen John, DTM, and then President Kohinoor Mukherjee, and thus, I continued. My home club is TCS Maitree Chennai Toastmasters Club.
To sum up my journey in one word – Metamorphic! My leadership journey started as a Club Secretary. I then served as a VPM, VPE, and President. Beyond the club, my learnings were enriched through roles such as Assistant Area Director (Governor, in those days), Area Director, Division Director, District 82 Club Extension Chair, Club Growth Director, Program Quality Director, and District Director. I was privileged to serve the largest District in the Toastmasters world during my term as the District Director. Currently, I am serving as the Region 13 Advisor and VPPR in a Community Bilingual club.
“Start where you are, Use what you have, Do what you can”
From a club member to the Region 13 Advisor that is a meteoric rise! What learnings from your earlier leadership roles have stayed with you in this journey? The Toastmasters program has been a transformational learning experience for me. From being a complete introvert to becoming a semiextrovert today, learning to work cohesively in diverse teams, building trust, engaging in servant leadership, striving for excellence amidst challenging situations, being receptive to feedback, establishing trust, creating & empowering new leaders, having the courage to experiment without fear of failure, leading with empathy, building the willingness to let go, being resilient – I learned (and am still learning) all these in Toastmasters, while building beautiful friendships too! My biggest learning so far has been to say “Yes” to opportunities that came my way. Many times, we close the doors to opportunities due to selflimiting thoughts. Encouragement and guidance from my mentors and fellow members helped me overcome those thoughts. I also learned how to view challenges as opportunities and in that process, I learned how to lift up people around me.
The global pandemic has affected our entire organization in the shift to the new normal of online meetings. What advice do you have for clubs and members to remain motivated? The pandemic has helped us to understand how resilient and agile we are, which we didn't know earlier! Now that we have understood that this situation is here to stay, my only suggestion to all

is - focus on the fundamentals while being more empathetic! When I say fundamentals, I am referring to having quality club meetings, even if that means scaling down from 4 meetings to 2 meetings in a month. Reach out to members to understand if their learning needs are being met by the club. Take a step back to reflect on the learnings of the past months and regularly check the progress made on our goals. Strive to put your best foot forward in every role that you take up in your club meeting. Support each other generously.
"Learn as much as you can, share whatever you have (ideas, opportunities, knowledge, moral support), and serve selflessly with empathy. " Are there any stories of resilience (among clubs or members) that inspire you? There are several stories that have inspired me; They say charity begins at home, so I'll quote one from my home club. Our Club was going through a challenging time like many others. Sometimes, just 5 or 6 members attended meetings, which made it very challenging for the club officers. To top it all, our President Deepak got struck by Covid. With just a few members attending meetings, many of the club officers being unwell, the easier way could have been to cancel meetings. However, Deepak made sure we met every week; Most of the time, the meeting only had Table Topics. He converted the club meetings as a forum to spread positivity, to share information that uplifted each other, all the while recovering from Covid. He didn’t take the easy way out! I admire his resilience. What do you see as the biggest opportunity/ priority/ challenge in the coming year and what can we do to prepare proactively for it? As much as it may sound clichéd, the biggest opportunity we have on hand is re-learning to Pause, Reflect, and Progress. Earlier, taking a step back or taking a break was viewed as a failure.
Now, we have learned that it is okay to Pause. Reflect on your priorities. Progress on Meaningful goals. The challenge we have had in the past has been our focus on “How, What, When”, instead of “Why”. Our Priority in the coming year shall be to focus on Why we do what we do. Prepare yourself to be kinder to yourself (we are always hard on ourselves, and kind on others ;-) ) If you could turn back time, what would you advise your younger self who was just stepping into senior leadership roles? “Self-care is not selfish”. I would have advised my younger self to understand that prioritizing selfcare is not being selfish. The struggle to understand and accept this, still continues ;-) What message would you like to share with the members of District 98? I would like to share the wisdom I received from my mentors - when opportunities come your way, take them up without self-doubt. Be prepared to work hard, take people along with you, and share your knowledge selflessly. The limiting thought in our mind stops us from accomplishing the greatness that we are capable of. I would like to borrow the words of my favorite superhero Batman, “All men/women have limits. They learn what they are, and then learn not to exceed them. I ignore mine.” Let this year be one with limitless opportunities to support each other, learn, excel, and let it bring in limitless meaningful successes!

Turn it Around The Resilient Story of Expedition Toastmasters Club 4th February 2019 was a dream come true for the Toastmasters enthusiasts in our corporate – Expedition Toastmasters Club, Mumbai, was chartered. The initial six months were a cakewalk but soon after, we faced a drop in membership owing to the pandemic. Although our meetings continued with the same energy, having only 11 members in the club meant us taking up dual roles at times to keep the show going. Finding role players for the meetings and fulfilling educational goals were getting increasingly difficult.
reflected and realised our methods could be more effective. So, we ramped up our PR activity to get a good inflow of guests. 3. Reach out to avoid burnout: We ensured to establish a good connection with our Club Coach, District Leadership and the entire Toastmasters ecosystem outside our club – be it contests or informative sessions. 4. Communicate with the Leadership: We started actively communicating the achievements of our members to the senior leadership in our Corporate, which in turn got us additional support as well as encouragement.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our club members, past Area Director - Sameer Thorat, past Division Director - Ankit Dasgupta, and Club Coach - Santosh Akella.
By June 2020, it was clear - we needed guidance which soon came in the form of our Club Coach - Santosh Akella. Then began the resilient ride of turning around the club from a struggling state to the club becoming Select Distinguished in 2020-21!
We will continue the winning streak going forward and get better.

My Toastmasters Journey "If you can dream it, you can do it!" My journey in Toastmasters started with a professional goal - to develop the communication capabilities of our mid-level and senior leaders. I’d heard about the value of Toastmasters during my MBA days, however, bringing the club to a remote location like Jamnagar was a tall order; the nearest club was 350 kms away! With support from Reliance‘s leadership and many enthusiastic professionals, we started the first club. Soon six more clubs opened within a year that became a division in 18 months! My journey made me a better communicator and a leader giving me lessons for life. 1. So what? – The entire endeavor started with many challenges starting from location constraints, grooming ourselves given the limited opportunities, large learning curve and so on. “So what?” Where there is a will, there's a way. It never mattered how difficult or big the challenge was, only how much we wanted to achieve. 2. Make the most of what you have – When we started the Toastmasters club, people were not that acquainted with technology. We had to make the most of what was available to us – be it the number of mentors, educational sessions or the Excomm trainings. We had to ensure optimum utilization of available resources. It was a leadership quality we learnt, and the results followed.
3. Best things can emerge from anywhere – Life is full of surprises. Lot of professionals questioned how a platform like Toastmasters could benefit a housewife in our township. Despite all odds, the first ever women's club of District 98 was created, and today it is the best performing club in our Division. Best things can emerge from anywhere; all one has to do is to identify, nurture and grow. 4. You are what you want to become – I had to prioritize my time, seek support professionally and personally to be a Toastmaster. I thank my family who let me follow my passion. I became a DTM in 2½ years, Division winner in Table Topics contest, Division runner-up in ISC and the Convener of District 98 Annual Conference Eloquence in 2021. It’s not about getting busy - it’s about prioritization. It’s not about the fear of public speaking, but the tenacity to overcome it. It’s not about who you are today, but what you want to become! If you have the grit and determination to achieve – there is no way you can’t. My journey gave me a lot of mentors, friends, mentees, experiences, memories and lessons that I will cherish for life.

Where there is a will - there's a way! Battling challenges with resilience The happenings over the last year have made me understand the meaning of this quote in depth. I was struck with Covid twice, first in December 2020 and then in April 2021. The utterly difficult "14 days" somehow passed. What remained behind was a post traumatic anxiety disorder. Such was its impact that I was sometimes affected by it for 18 hours at a stretch. I consulted many doctors and was recommended antidepressants and sleeping pills. Once the anxiety decreased, I felt severe pain throughout my body. It got so bad that I found it difficult to sit at a place for more than 5 minutes. My husband Hemant (who is also a Toastmaster), stood as an anchor throughout this tough time and kept telling me that better things were round the corner.

Not because I performed well but because I put up a firm fight against anxiety. It was a big achievement for me. Few weeks later I was informed about my selection as an Area Director and my happiness knew no bounds. That day I had an epiphany: your willpower can help you reach your desired goals against all odds. I am still undergoing treatment to fight this monster with total resilience. And every time I have any doubts, I remember these great words. “Resilience is knowing that you are the only one that has the power and the responsibility to pick yourself up.” – Mary Holloway

Shortly, the application form for 2021-22 Area Director role was announced. I was in two minds whether to apply or not. Understanding my condition, I knew it would be a tough task managing my health and the duties of an Area Director. The Toastmaster in me wanted to give this a try. With just this thought in mind, I applied for the role. Such was my focus and energy, that when interviews happened, I managed to sit at stretch for the entire 15 minutes without any anxiety or pain. I felt accomplished.
