FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
We must find time to stop and thank those people who make a difference in our lives - John F Kennedy And one of those who make a difference for us are our mentors. At every stage in my life, I had mentors, both visible and invisible, conscious and unconscious, situations and circumstances and what not! I would like to thank each one of them today with a lot of gratitude. As a kid, my parents were my greatest mentors, they taught me the moral values that I stand for still today. Then came my teachers at school, college and CA articleship. And subsequently when I did my MBA and LLM while I was working and juggling between family, work and education. My biggest mentor till date has been the experience of starting my own venture from zero and taking it to 9 different countries in the past 24 years.

All being said and done, when I joined Toastmasters, I had great mentors like Arvind, Brillian and others who helped me at every step. Even today, when I am the newsletter editor I do some mentoring from our District Director and DPRM in form. Mentoring is a great relationship and a companionship we can build forever. With a mentor you can travel the same distance in less time. As we begin this new year, with a new passion, with a new enthusiasm, with a new aim, with a new resolution, I urge you to find a mentor. You find a mentor at your work, find a mentor for life and relationships and finally find a mentor at Toastmasters. We as a community have seen what a mentor can do. When a mentor said, I see something in you - we had a champion. When a mentor said, you can do it, we had an achiever. When a mentor said, you will, we saw someone come out of the shell and become confident. That is the power of mentoring. So, go get a mentor today, now and take action...!!!
Then my books, I was very fond of reading and used to read many books and books can be the greatest mentors. I wish to go back to reading in 2022.

Mentor – Mentee… A Win-Win Situation
A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself - Oprah Winfrey Season’s Greetings! I wish you and your families, good health, love and light in 2022. One of the most satisfying and rewarding programs in Toastmasters and for me personally, is the Mentor Program. We all join Toastmasters to primarily build our confidence, enhance our communication and leadership, and become good public speakers. But we all need help! We need guidance! We need mentors! And I am most thankful for the outstanding mentors that I’ve had. Am also privileged with the amazing mentees that I’ve supported. I think the responsibilities of being a mentor or Protégé are equal. A mentor can’t do much good if the protégé is unwilling to learn or reluctant to put in the effort. And the protégé cannot really improve if the mentor doesn’t find the time or have the right knowledge. But if both, the mentor and mentee, have the right attributes and attitude, if they show equal respect and sensitivity, the relationship could be a win-win situation for both.
Remain productive Fine tune their own skills Learn from mentees Derive deep satisfaction and gets recognition If a club has a healthy Mentor-Mentee Program, the club will always attract new members and retain old members because there is a sense of comfort and satisfaction. It is thus, a win-win situation for all. I recommend with all my heart, that every Toastmaster finds a mentor who will challenge you, guide you and help you become the speaker and leader that you wish to be.

TORCHBEARERS OF We live in a world where things evolve at a rapid pace. Technology, fashion, skills, or even challenges, each and everything has evolved rapidly in front of our eyes and thrown up more questions than answers. Like the saying “Too many things spoil the broth” too many challenges on many fronts makes us loose our focus towards the things that really matter. Often, we feel lost. Having a mentor around can help us navigate the challenges each situation throws at us and makes us better prepared to focus on the things that matter the most and help us reach our full. A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you. – Bob Proctor A mentor is someone who sees what you can become, not what you are, and guides you in your journey to challenge your potential. A mentor will not give you answers about the things you should and should not do. But a mentor will throw questions at and you and guide you in the right direction for getting answers to those questions. In the process, you evolve, you raise your bar and slowly reach the next level. Step by step and level by level, the mentor helps you evolve into you really are. Steve Jobs-Mark Zuckerberg, Mahatma GandhiNelson Mandela & Sachin Tendulkar-Virender Sehwag are some of the famous mentor-mentee relationships where-in the insights and direction provided by mentors to their mentees have inspired mentees to great accomplishments in their field of interest.

With appropriate guidance from a mentor, a newly joined toastmaster can improve upon many aspects of communication and leadership and evolve into an effective communicator and a leader. In areas of speech development & delivery, conflict management and leading from the front, mentor inputs can help a mentee understand their strength and weaknesses and guide them to become better at leading and communicating. Vamsi Krishna, Area G3 Director says “A mentor understands that his or her role is to be dependable, engaged, authentic, and tuned into the needs of the mentee. For mentoring to be effective, both the mentor and the mentee must play their part. Heshma Daryanani, from Bibvewadi Toastmasters Club, lists out some best practices of mentoring. 1. Be consistent in being in touch with your mentees/mentors 2. Master the process first, then transfer the knowledge to your mentees. 3. Be confident in what you are conveying as mentees see you as their inspiration and leader to follow. 4. Listen to your mentees wrt what they wish to convey or if any challenges they are facing to resolve it. 5. Learn from the mentees as they may have different perspectives. 6. Always encourage and motivate the mentees.
n summary, a Mentor-Mentee relationship is a two-way delicate bridge, and for it to be effective both the mentor and the mentee must play their part fully.

I am deeply indebted to my mentor DTM Sravanthi, who stays thousands of miles away from me but has a very special place in my heat. When we met online, our connection was instantaneous. She has kept track of my progress ever since whenever I feel like I need to talk t her, I see her message in my mailbox like telepath. She has guided me on most of the intricate issues that I had doubts on. One of the most advice that she has given me as “when in doubt, check what are you doing. Are you serving the toastmaster organization or some people?” are you following toastmasters values if I R S E? She has been constant source of inspiration for me and I intend to become one such mentor for all my mentees
Power of Mentoring, the new skill discovered in 2021 It was just 6 months ago when I look back of my journey as a Mentor, indeed, never knew I would travel so far in a short span of time. Made friends more like family. Today when 2021 is going to end, I just look back at the old precious memories that I spent when I was A New Toastmaster and Now while typing this, so many mentees and mentors I have met more like friends and family. The best practices I followed as mentor is as follows: 1. Be consistent in being in touch with your mentees/mentors 2. Effective Mentoring An effective mentor understands that his or her role is to be dependable, engaged, authentic, and tuned into the needs of the mentee. Understanding the needs and the purpose of way they joined toastmasters plays a vital role for their journey ahead. Like Steven Spielberg said, “The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” I suggest certain things for my mentees (and other toastmasters aswell who seek my advice) to push them for the next milestones. 1. Have a concrete goal – should me specific and realistic. 2. Always plan ahead rather than waiting for the right time. 3. Go beyond the club – try to explore the world out there. 4. Never give up – there are lot of opportunities. 5. Write next speech immediately the day you deliver a speech. 6. Connect with your mentor frequently - At least once in a week. 7. Experiment and learn new things. 8. Take different roles – if possible, take speaker slot once in 6 meetings. 9. Take minimum 1 Evaluator role after every 2 speeches. 10. Share your knowledge to others whenever it is possible.
When I joined Stellar Toastmasters Club, I was a hesitant, shy woman who never wished to raise hands and speak in public. I also had a couple of miserable experiences of escapism when it came to addressing an audience. But, 9 months into the program, I was confident. I must say, one primary reason for this is mentoring. I observed proficient speakers to learn from them, I watched my own speech recordings and did some self-mentoring and most important, last but not the least, I had been fortunate enough have a mentor like Dr. Brillian SK, who always helped me walk the path and sail through the projects and speeches. I would like to show my heartfelt gratitude for Dr. Brillian S.K,DTM on this opportunity.
