WHAT IS

MESSAGE FROM THE

With great pleasure, we give you "Uplift," the Virtusa CMB Toastmasters Club's official newsletter for the first half of 2022/23. Uplift, at its core, refers to being raised or increased, or to something that makes a person feel more cheerful, positive, or optimistic. We have the opportunity to uplift others in every interaction. We can brighten their day by being encouraging and grateful. We, as a club, encourage our members to better themselves and achieve greater success in their careers. So, I wanted to convey that positive attitude to Toastmasters by naming this newsletter Uplift. I appreciate everyone who helped me create this newsletter. I'd like to thank our President and the Exco team for their ongoing, dedicated support. And also, I express my gratitude to TM Aqeel Aarif for his ongoing assistance in a variety of ways. My appreciation also goes to my subcommittee for their efforts. Finally, I'd like to thank all of the club members who have helped me tremendously with all the PR activities in the club. Happy reading, folks!

MESSAGE FROM THE

Today, with immense pleasure, I write to you as the 11th President of the Virtusa CMB Toastmasters Club. We are a gifted club with members who are enthusiastic about the Toastmasters program and, above all, about serving each other, the fraternity, and the corporation as a whole. Toastmasters Kasun, Chethana, and Shashini represent Division G in their respective roles. Our members also contribute significantly to the corporation. We are continuing to provide customized speechcraft training to various segments within Virtusa. The most recent and ongoing speechcraft is for the New York Life (NYL) segment. Our members go above and beyond to assist other clubs by providing educational sessions and meeting roles at their Toastmasters meetings. I believe success is not a constant unless one works hard to maintain it. This year will not be easy. Our country is facing unprecedented economic turmoil. However, let us make a firm commitment to doing our part to the best of our abilities. I have no doubt that if every member is determined to succeed, we will be the best. I am a firm believer in teamwork. I'd like to thank my fellow Exco members (the club leadership) for all of their assistance. Toastmaster Pavan is in charge of organizing our educational meetings. Toastmaster Sharika is in charge of our club's membership. Toastmaster Shashini is the club's brand ambassador. Toastmasters Anupama, Krishanth, and Ashinsani have also continued to support our club in any way they can; in each of these responsibilities, there is a team behind the success. They are referred to as subcommittees.

My main goal is to raise the club's standards without sacrificing quality. Also, together with my team, I guarantee our members will have every opportunity to shine in their personal, professional, and public speaking careers through our club. We are a club whose members adhere to Toastmasters International's core values; Integrity, Respect, Service, and Excellence. I gratefully acknowledge all members' contributions to this newsletter, as well as the tireless efforts of TM Shashini Wijesinghe and her team in compiling it. I wish you happy reading!

PRESIDENT

AREA DIRECTOR “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.” The Virtusa CMB Toastmasters Club is a perfect example. For the past decade, the club has been steadily climbing the success ladder, producing confident public speakers, visionary leaders, Toastmasters.

and

passionate

Members not only support one another within the club, but they also support other clubs and have contributed to the District mission. Despite the difficult circumstances, the club gained 11 new members in Term 1 and maintain 80% of membership renewals. The most intriguing aspect of Virtusa CMB Toastmasters is the members' participation in club activities and events outside the club. They did an excellent job hosting the Area G3 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest, and many members attended the Division Conference and contributed in various ways. It's inspiring to see how the club goes above and beyond to make meetings enjoyable and informative, as well as the members' eagerness to embark on the Pathways journey.

I'd like to thank the club's executive committee and members for their dedication and hard work. I can see there are so many rising stars in the club who will leave a lasting legacy in Toastmasters. With all of the team's hard work and dedication, I'm confident this newsletter will be another success. I wish the club and its members the best of luck.

MEET THE

INTERVIEW WITH Associate Director - Business Consulting

Who is Hirushi De Silva? Can you tell us a little about your hobbies and interests outside of work? I started at Virtusa about 5 years ago and have held a variety of positions in the Enterprise Applications Group, or EAG. I am currently the Product Line Manager for the data platform team and the E2E Business Design Lead. I became an audit trainee at Earnst & Young two weeks after finishing my A/Ls at 19. Later, I became a process improvement specialist at Brandix and a manufacturing process consultant at Brandix i3, now Fortude. Prior to joining Virtusa, I was Senior Group Manager for Quality for two of WNS Global Services' insurance clients. Because I am passionate about learning, I continued to learn new things while working. I am a CIMA Associate Member with two executive master's degrees in strategic marketing and finance. I have an MBA, am a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, have studied project management, film scriptwriting, and international relations, and am currently studying data science and PowerBI. I joined the Toastmasters Club of Brandix's Speech Crafters program to build my speaking and personal confidence. I'm glad I joined Toastmasters early in my career because it helped me improve as a speaker and learn how to structure and articulate things, which have been invaluable throughout my career.

You have been employed at Virtusa for almost 5 years now. Could you give us a brief summary of your journey to becoming an Associate Director at Virtusa? I started out as a manager – Business Consulting, overseeing just one project, but after a few months, I was given the responsibility of overlooking the Lead to Time Tower within EAG. Our Oracle Fusion Implementation project got underway in 2018. I was initially tasked with overseeing Oracle Fusion's Project Portfolio Management track, which dealt with things like project billing, revenue, contracts, etc. I was then given the role of End-to-End Business Design Lead, which included managing both the Project Portfolio Management and Core Finance Tracks. After Fusion was implemented, Shehan, the Head of EAG, gave me the biggest challenge to date: managing the Data Platform Team's product line while also serving as the E2E Business Design Lead. With my Six Sigma background, I was always interested in data and my expertise is in data. Therefore, coming back to my roots was exciting. However, it was quite interesting for me to be exposed to the architectural and technological aspects of data for the first time. As I moved up the corporate ladder, Virtusa helped me expand my lateral scope and has given me many opportunities to learn and deliver across multiple domains, technologies and functions. More than climbing up the ladder, lateral growth has been the key to my professional development.

HIRUSHI DE SILVA

INTERVIEW WITH HIRUSHI DE SILVA

Why do you feel that lifelong learning is important and what is the impact this would have on an individual's professional career in the IT industry? A quote from one of my lecturers has stayed with me ever since: "The more you learn, you realize you know so little" which is true because, with each new skill you learn, you realize how much you still have to learn. I've always been someone who enjoys learning about anything and everything. If you aren't aware of it, take it up and learn it on the job. That's what I've done since my first job. Because we work in such a fast-paced environment, lifelong learning is essential. Leaving aside the competitive nature, it is critical you as an individual gain knowledge about the various areas because you will then be able to respect and appreciate the opinions and viewpoints of others. Studying while working has helped me maintain my focus, build a strong network of people from various domains and industries, and meet lifelong friends in unexpected places.

Based on your personal experience, why is mentoring and effective coaching important in a corporate environment and how can we enhance and build successful mentor-mentee relationships ? This year, I had the opportunity to participate in the "Women Leaders Program" to focus on conflict resolution, negotiation, and leadership development. Personally, I was undergoing a difficult period because of my father's illness. I had a mentor who taught me different techniques for dealing with difficult situations. This program taught me a lot about balancing work and life pressures while striving for excellence. I had no idea how useful and beneficial simple things like a 5-minute break before the next meeting began were until they started helping me with my mental health. Mentoring and coaching are very important. It is everyone's job to make sure team members are guided not only on the job but also in their personal lives.

In comparison to other industries, the IT sector experiences too much change. We must be aware of newer things and educate ourselves on them; otherwise, we will fall behind. It's not about winning the race; it's about participating in it.

Many new programs are being launched across the organization. You can always reach out to someone you trust for advice without having to wait. It all starts with asking for help.

Not only should sales teams be aware of the trends and direction of demand, but you should too, so you can contribute newer ideas and deliver. I believe in cross-skilling, upskilling, and being a generalist. It is not for me to do all of the work alone, but to be able to collaborate with a multi-talented team and value their knowledge and expertise.

I've mentored many people. You know it is a good relationship when they occasionally remember you and see how well they're doing in their careers and personal lives. The strength of a mentor-mentee relationship depends on the mentee's willingness to change or accept the advice given, the mentor's willingness to go the extra mile, and how far and how hard the mentor is willing to push the mentee.

INTERVIEW WITH HIRUSHI DE SILVA

Who were the role models and mentors in your life and what do you admire the most in them?

You have already risen several steps in the corporate leadership ladder. Where do you see yourself heading from here?

My father is both my biggest inspiration and my mentor. He taught me to enjoy life while also being self-sufficient and independent. He taught me to recover from setbacks, to never accept failure, and to learn from it. He always kept telling me to move forward and never look back. That is exactly what I did.

As previously stated, I see myself progressing and learning new things. I want to improve my skills in Data Analytics, Data Science, and PowerBI. I aspire to be a better Product Line Manager for the EAG's Data Platform team. That is my immediate goal.

Aside from my father, I have been blessed with many mentors, beginning with Praveen Ruberu, my first boss at Earnest & Young, who still keeps in touch with me and taught me the mentormentee relationship literally never ends. Azad Kaleel, my Master Black Belt, has been instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today. At Virtusa, Shehan Warusavithana, who has been patient and has provided me with a lot of opportunities and challenges from the time of the interview to date and in the future, is what I admire most about him. They were never too busy for me. They are all different people who have accepted my flaws and encouraged me to grow as a person. This is what I admire most about them all. I have many fictional characters whom I won't name here, but whom I admire greatly. An avid reader would understand what I mean.

I have a moving goalpost. Once I complete the current goal, I think about the next. My moving goalpost will eventually reach my dream of starting my own consulting firm before moving on to the next goal. Becoming a better photographer, releasing my poetry book, travelling to new countries, and being a better daughter to my parents are my personal ambitions.

DELEGATION

THE KEY TO EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP Delegation is a crucial skill that every effective leader must possess. It involves assigning tasks to team members and empowering them to take ownership and responsibility for the results. When done effectively, delegation can lead to better team performance, higher job satisfaction, and improved overall productivity.

Benefits of Delegation Delegation has numerous benefits for both leaders and team members. Firstly, it frees up leaders to focus on highlevel tasks and strategic planning. By delegating tasks to team members, leaders can ensure that they are utilizing their time effectively and working on the most important tasks that require their attention. Secondly, delegation helps to develop the skills and abilities of team members. When team members are given responsibilities and opportunities to learn and grow, they are more likely to feel motivated and engaged in their work. This can lead to higher job satisfaction and better performance. Thirdly, delegation helps to distribute the workload evenly across the team, ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute and that no one is overwhelmed with too much work. This can help to improve overall productivity and reduce the risk of burnout among team members.

Keys to Effective Delegation To delegate effectively, leaders need to follow a few key principles: 1. Set Clear Expectations: When delegating tasks, leaders must clearly communicate their expectations and provide detailed instructions on how to complete the task. This ensures that team members understand what is expected of them and can work effectively to achieve the desired outcome. 2. Choose the Right Person for the Task: Leaders must consider the skills, abilities, and interests of their team members when delegating tasks. Assigning tasks that align with their strengths can help team members feel more engaged and motivated to succeed. 3. Provide Support and Guidance: Leaders must be available to provide support and guidance to team members throughout the process. This can help team members feel more confident in their abilities and ensure that they are on track to achieve the desired outcome.

Challenges of Delegation Despite the numerous benefits of delegation, it can also present some challenges for leaders. Some common challenges include:

ILANGARATHNE

Fear of Losing Control: Some leaders may fear that delegating tasks will lead to a loss of control or result in subpar work. To overcome this, leaders must trust their team members and provide clear expectations and support throughout the process. Lack of Trust: If there is a lack of trust between leaders and team members, delegation may not be effective. Leaders must build trust with their team members through open communication, transparency, and a willingness to listen and learn. Time Constraints: Delegating tasks can take time and effort, and leaders may not always have the resources to do so effectively. To overcome this, leaders must prioritize their tasks and delegate effectively to ensure that they are utilizing their time in the most effective way. In conclusion, delegation is a critical skill for effective leadership. When done effectively, delegation can lead to improved team performance, higher job satisfaction, and increased productivity. By setting clear expectations, choosing the right person for the task, providing support and guidance, and encouraging ownership and accountability, leaders can delegate tasks effectively and help their team members grow and develop.

FLOAT, FIGHT OR FORGET

At Division, you understand no amount of luck can save anyone. But, to my delight, I discovered only the first-place winner will be eligible to compete at the district level. Yes, you guessed it: all I needed to do was not win. As simple as it is. But little did I know the universe had a better plan for me. I was crowned Division A champion (as a 5-month-old infant in Toastmasters' life). As terrified as I was, I realized there was no way out unless I pushed through it. So I rolled up my sleeve, poured everything I had into one glass, took a long, deep breath, and drank it all in one gulp.

By TM Nadeesha Fernando The title of the speech that got me to the district stage of the District 82 International Speech Contest. I joined Toastmasters on December 2021. I served as the club's first VP-Ed in WNS Toastmasters Club. The first "Club Contest" was then held. I was pushed to participate because we were a small group with no experienced speakers. It wasn't a big deal; I won first place and assumed that was the end of it. Much to my surprise, I was told I had to compete in the Area level contest. What? To say the least, I was terrified! I dragged myself to the area, and for some unknown gracious reason, and much to my dismay, I won first place there as well.

I practised day and night with the help of my incredible mentor, Triple DTM Mr. H. B. Dayaratne. On a side note, he was so strict I wasn't allowed to exhale until I finished the job. Would you believe me if I said I had practised the same speech numerous times and had simply forgotten it? Would you believe after scribbling the choreography all over my floor, it looked like a child's doodle? Would you believe I got cuts on my hands from repeatedly performing a single gesture? Would you believe I cried so much out of frustration and exhaustion before learning the true meaning of resilience?

Float, Fight or Forget continued

The entire experience taught me all boundaries are merely mental facades. Plus, whatever I set my mind to, I can certainly accomplish. To add to the many feathers in our cap, we were named a 'Distinguished Club' within six months of our inception. Now I'm floating in the glorious memories, fighting so hard to maintain my passion for Toastmastering while also remembering the lessons learned. Did I win the International Speech Contest 2022/23 Island Championship? Nope. But I found the CHAMPION within ME.

QUOTES FROM THE FOUNDER

"We learn best in moments of enjoyment."

“Toastmasters are educators, whether they realize it or not, and Toastmasters is more than a club -- it's an education.”

"Real communication is impossible without listening."

"Whatever your grade or position, if you know how and when to speak, and when to remain silent, your chances of real success are proportionately increased."

MEMORIES AT VIRTUSA TMC

By TM Meyola Weligamaarachchi Being a Toastmasters member has helped me overcome my fear of public speaking and improve my vocabulary, which has been a huge benefit to my personal development. I enjoy the monthly Toastmasters meetings because they make me feel at ease and confident. My first experience at the Virtusa Toastmasters Club was participating in the humorous speech contest, which made me feel great and was a turning point in my life when I took my courage and confidence to the next level. The club members are an amazing group of people who have supported me since the beginning of my journey at Virtusa Toastmasters. One of my favourite club memories is the mid-year joint division conference held on November 2022, at the Center for Banking Studies, Rajagiriya. As a new candidate, I was overjoyed to add this new experience to my professional resume. When I walked into the venue, I felt a surge of energy because everyone in Divisions B, D, and G was fascinated by the day's events. I was always excited and thrilled when I talked to other people in my club.

We were given the opportunity to thank the person next to us and give high fives for their hard work, which made the entire audience happy. Last but not least, creating lasting memories with club members is an added bonus. I am grateful to my club president and my fellow members. Finally, someone who enjoys making memories and living life to the fullest, joining Virtusa Toastmasters made me realize how wonderful memories are and how I can reach new heights with my public speaking skills in a very comfortable environment with positive energies all around me. The Virtusa Toastmasters Club is a happy place!

VIRTUSA CMB TOASTMASTERS CLUB

MAKING

Inspirations were abundant as contestants in the humorous speech and evaluation contests delivered their best performances, which I must say were brilliant. The keynote speaker session, delivered by Toastmaster Shuvo Hridayesh, was one of the best. In his speech, he discussed his personal and professional challenges, which gave me hope and consistency.

T N CO

After 5 years, I finally got to sing in front of an audience. I was delighted. The winners of the contest were then announced. "Humorous Speech Contest, third place, TM Dinesha Perera..." OH MY GOD!

By TM Dinesha Perera

For a brief moment, I was stunned. Never expected a place. Had no words to describe how I felt at that time.

Because I was afraid that everyone would hear me, I crept out of my room at 11 p.m. on October 1st and began practising my debut speech for the Toastmasters Humorous Speech Contest after everyone else had gone to bed. Even after many attempts, I was still unsure about my speech. "Are you not going for the contest today?" My mother's voice woke me up. I hurriedly prepared. My fear from yesterday has vanished. I told myself that everything would be fine and no matter what happened, my friends would never mock me and would always be there for me. After the Contest Master summoned my name, I went silent for a minute. My mentor, TM Shashini's words of encouragement, flashed before my eyes. "You can do this". She was more excited to hear my speech than I was. I glanced at the audience, who was beaming and welcoming me. Then I took my place in front of the audience and began my speech.

I would not have entered the contest if TM Shashini had not encouraged me and if I did not feel at ease with my fellow toastmasters. I knew I could put my trust in them and they would never let me down, even if I failed.

I was extremely fortunate to have TM Chethana sitting in front of me. She always has a smile on her face, so I assumed she was laughing at my speech. Overjoyed I was.
