A Morning of Laughter and Reflection

My Experience as Contest Chair

The morning of Sunday, 13th October 2024, dawned bright and filled with promise as the Moratuwa Toastmasters Humorous Speech and Evaluations Contest commenced. It wasn’t just another gathering; it was a morning charged with laughter, thoughtful evaluations, and the spark of connection that Toastmasters events are renowned for. The atmosphere at the venue buzzed with excitement, as the audience comprising fellow members, guests, and friends eagerly anticipated the performances ahead

Guiding the event alongside two talented Contest Masters, Kylie Sheron and Savindi Suraweera, made the experience even more special Our teamwork brought structure and vibrancy to the proceedings From the humorous speeches that elicited genuine laughter to evaluations that delivered insightful feedback, every moment highlighted the dedication and spirit of our contestants

Now, one thing I didn’t quite expect was how hard it would be to keep a straight face! As the speeches rolled on, I found myself biting my lip, desperately trying not to burst out laughing The speakers were so funny that I was barely able to hold back Let’s just say my “serious” Contest Chair face got a real workout as I tried to keep the event running smoothly while also containing my giggles!

Preparation as the Contest Chair demanded meticulous planning, balancing creativity with procedure I spent days revisiting rules, rehearsing scripts, collaborating with our contest team, and ensuring every participant felt equipped to shine on stage Coordination with judges, timers, and role players was essential to maintaining a fair and enjoyable flow.

During the contest, my role was to keep the energy high and transitions smooth, ensuring an engaging, seamless event. The speakers’ humor brought warmth, while evaluators impressed with sharp insights. Laughter and applause reflected our shared appreciation for growth. This morning reminded me why we, as Toastmasters, unite: to grow, connect, and celebrate the power of communication

180 Degrees

Can your life change in 180 degrees? For me, the answer is a massive yes It all started back in 2013 when I visited Toastmasters as a guest At that moment, I had no idea that my life was about to change forever I remember being asked to step up and choose a table topic The topic I picked was, “What can change your life forever? ”

To be honest, I had nothing to say I was completely blank My speech was a mess I could barely string a few words together before I stopped, overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty At the end of the meeting, a kind lady approached me She said, “Son, this speech doesn’t define your journey Who knows? Maybe this will be the rise of a shining star ” I didn’t fully realize what she meant at the time, but those words stuck with me They echoed in my mind, and she became the guiding light for my Toastmasters journey. I embarked on my journey toward becoming a Competent Communicator (CC), a goal that took me three long years to achieve. During those years, I changed in ways I never expected. Slowly but surely, my fear of public speaking began to vanish. My confidence grew, and I was able to reach new milestones along the way.

along their own journeys Currently, I’m mentoring four talented protégés, and all of them are on track to earn the prestigious Triple Crown and I'm counting days

One day a guy came to me with a humorous speech for the Division Contest After having sessions and revising his speech, I told him, “Who knows ? Maybe this will be the rise of the Humour King of Moratuwa Toastmasters ” At the time you are reading this, he is conquering stages, and on his way to becoming a Humorous Champion. Seeing his growth reminds me that Toastmasters truly is a place where life changing moments happen, often when you least expect them.

One of the biggest turning points was when I delivered my very first humorous speech, titled “SHORT ” I discovered a hidden talent I didn’t even know I had humor ! Toastmasters helped me unlock this talent, and that was a 180 degree turn for me

When Toastmasters introduced the Pathways program, I had to start all over again, I worried about not finishing Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB) level And I didn’t know that I was on the path to becoming a Triple Crown winner not once, but twice

When I received my first Triple Crown award at the installation ceremony, I realized the truth in my mentor’s words from years ago, "Who knows? Maybe this will be the rise of a shining star ” Those words inspired me to work even harder, and soon I won my second Triple Crown I also became a Pathways mentor, helping others

For me, Toastmasters was not an accident or a coincidence, it was written in my fate. It was the catalyst that helped me transform my life by 180 degrees Maybe you, reading this, will be a future champion speaker, a remarkable leader, or even an International President one day "Who knows? life works in mysterious ways "

Overcoming your fear of

Public Speaking

“You can speak well if your tongue can deliver the message of your heart ” - John Ford Fear of public speaking is common for many people around the world There was a time in my life, when I was really afraid of talking in front of the public!

In school, speaking before 30+ classmates made me uneasy and fearful of public speaking Years later, I decided to overcome this fear

One day, I visited a Toastmasters club with my mum. In just two hours, I learned so much and saw something special in every speaker, giving me a gut feeling that this was the best way to improve my public speaking.

“Table Topics” session, participants spoke impromptu for 1-2 minutes. When the Table Topics Master invited me, I overcame my fear of public speaking and accepted the challenge It wasn’t easy, but seeing my mother’s proud smile afterward was deeply motivating To conquer public speaking fears, one must embrace such opportunities

If you take up the challenge, when you are afraid only two things could happen; either you’ll come out with flying colours and find yourself stronger or you’ll fail but learn something new

Overcome your fear of public speaking by taking up the challenge and go forward with confidence!

Winning isn’t everything,

but wanting to win is.

This famous quote by Vince Lombardi after whom the NFL’s Super Bowl trophy is named, encapsulates the drive and determination required for success He was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960s and is celebrated for his remarkable legacy, leading the team to victory in the first two Super Bowls and securing five championship titles in seven years It is undeniable that his ability to inspire and motivate through positive and powerful words played a significant role in his outstanding achievements

Nobody likes losing it’s human nature The aftermath often brings pain and frustration, but losing isn’t the end and shouldn’t stop you from pursuing your dreams

A loss is a chance for growth, reflection, and adaptation It can be a motivator, driving you to strive for greater success Losing isn’t fatal if you use it wisely, just as winning isn’t final unless you build on it

Winning is hard, maintaining it is harder, and persevering after failure is hardest Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before inventing the light bulb, treating each failure as a lesson

Success requires consistent effort, but not at the cost of your well-being. Rest, adapt, and keep moving forward true success lies in learning and determination.

Mission Accepted

My TMOD Journey

My heart was pumping when our president TM Damian asked me the dreaded question "Will you be the TMOD for next session?". I think I was going to get a minor heart attack. Being called to be the next TMOD is at least for me never a fun feeling! While my first thoughts were to say no, I thought to myself, “I should actually push myself and take up this challenge without shying away”

Picking an interesting theme

One of the hardest things in being a TMOD is picking an interesting theme When picking the theme, I cared about two things Firstly, it should be something that I'm actually excited to talk about and Secondly, the audience should also be interested enough to actually listen

The first thought that came to my mind was Harry Potter but then, remembered that TM Savidya already did a marvelous job as the chosen one so I picked spy thrillers especially Mission Impossible and James Bond style stories

Developing a story

As a TMOD, I wanted to ensure that I develop an interesting story that revolves around the theme and ensure every event in the meeting revolves around that

I decided to take inspiration from Mission impossible 1 and apply it to our meeting where I, being the head agent of the IMF (Impossible Mission Force) tries to find the traitor within the Moratuwa Toastmaster Club

Capturing audience interest

After developing this main storyline, I worked every night after work to develop an interesting script and to keep the members (agents) interested, I thought to ask questions inspired from the movie, Fight Club where I introduced two rules: “You do not talk about the IMF”! and “You DO NOT talk about the IMF” as it was a secretive organization similar to Fight Club

I took the support of TM Savindu and TM Thivuru to use charades to give the audience clues which they can use to find the traitor Again, I was constantly trying to ensure the audience is interested

Overall, I am thankful for the experience as being the TMOD made me move past my comfort zone

It was quite difficult to come up with an interesting meeting as the TMOD but as the saying goes “Good things don't come easy”. I want to thank TM Damian for giving me this wonderful opportunity and TM Savindu, TM Thiviru, TM Imandi, TM Nadee and TM Udani whom I constantly annoyed asking for advice as I really wanted to do a good job and provide our members with a unique experience.

For any member who is considering the TMODgo for it! Push yourself! Do your damn mission agent and ensure you do it well!

Joining Toastmasters has undoubtedly been one of the best decisions I’ve made this year, and perhaps in recent years I’ve heard numerous success stories about how Toastmasters has served as a great platform for individuals to fight their fear of public speaking and develop into confident communicators. My primary goal in this journey is to enhance my impromptu speaking skills by mastering the art of structuring and delivering a speech effectively within a limited timeframe As someone in scientific research, I often get to present my work to diverse audiences who may not share a similar background. Therefore, effective and comprehensive communication is crucial, and I believe Toastmasters will help me improve in this area During my brief time here, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in humorous speech contests at the club, area, and division levels These were invaluable experiences that helped not only to boost my confidence in speaking before an audience but also to enhance my ability to craft engaging and purposeful speeches

Seven months ago, I joined Toastmasters after a traumatic experience in my second year of university. I froze during a speech and ran off the stage. After that, I couldn’t bring myself to speak in front of others again It was a struggle but I knew I had to face it for my future Now, thanks to Toastmasters, I can confidently deliver even a 10-minute speech on my own without any hesitation Beyond public speaking, I’ve gained the confidence to connect with anyone around me. The club feels like a family warm, welcoming, and always encouraging They helped me push past my fears and embrace this new experience It’s been an incredible journey This journey has been nothing short of incredible I’m so grateful for how far I’ve come Toastmasters has truly transformed my self-belief and interpersonal skills. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next!

TM Hasini

Joining Toastmasters has been one of the most fulfilling decisions I’ve ever made What began as an attempt to overcome my fear of public speaking quickly turned into a lifechanging journey that has enhanced both my communication skills and personal growth. Toastmasters provides a structured, supportive environment where members can practice public speaking, receive constructive feedback and develop leadership skills The opportunity to regularly deliver speeches and participate in impromptu speaking exercises has helped me become more confident. Over time, I’ve seen significant improvements in my ability to organize my thoughts and manage nervousness More than just speaking in front of an audience, Toastmasters has given me a dynamic environment for learning, growth and leadership development I'm excited to embrace the next steps in this journey, knowing that every experience with Toastmasters brings new opportunities for growth and self-improvement

I got to know about toastmasters from one of my lovely schoolmate Toastmaster Nadee Balasuriya I was very hesitant to speak even though I wanted to share my ideas in a public platform So I joined moratuwa toastmasters club All the members were so warm and friendly It is an amazing community; where I started my journey with them as a choreographer for a dance of the installation ceremony What a wonderful start it is Not only improving my language skills I'm also having so much fun by engaging in different kinds of activities with them I'm looking forward to make more memorable moments with our lovely club

I joined Toastmasters club few months back, since I wanted to improve my language skills and specially the public speaking ability As a beginner, I was scared and had my doubts in first few sessions But with the support of my fellow Toastmasters and the motivation i received, I believe I can gain more knowledge and to achieve my target of speaking Engish language properly I know it will be a slow but a steady growth I believe that I am in the correct path and looking forward to get engaged with Toastmasterts actively

When I joined Toastmasters, I had no idea it would be such a wonderful experience. My first impressions were how welcoming the people were and how well the meetings were organized After delivering my icebreaker speech, the positive and encouraging response I received boosted my confidence and inspired me to give better speeches I’ve also improved my video editing skills by creating official meeting videos. Listening to speeches from senior members has taught me a lot, and I’ve been inspired by the club presidents, mentors, and fellow members in many ways Overall, Toastmasters has been an incredible learning journey, and I’m grateful for the amazing people I’ve met along the way!

My experience with Toastmasters has been amazing so far. Having visited a number of clubs, what makes Moratuwa Toastmasters soo unique is its dynamic, youthful and energetic culture that's fostered among the members While I've always enjoyed engaging in conversions I've sometimes resisted my urge to start one, but I do believe my Toastmasters journey so far has really helped me concur my fear further; as Toastmasters is known for encouraging "dynamic conversions" While having taken up an executive committee role a few months into my Toastmasters journey felt like being thrown into the deep end, it really provided me with a crash course on alot of the ins and outs of the organization and the experience and knowledge I've gained from it is definitely immeasurable

TM Udani

Joining the Moratuwa Toastmasters Club has been a turning point in my journey of growth From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in a safe place a place where I could try, fail, learn, and grow without fear of judgment The members welcomed me with warmth and encouragement, making me feel like I belonged Every meeting is a chance to step out of my comfort zone, speak my mind, and improve myself little by little This club isn’t just about giving speeches; it’s about finding your voice, building confidence, and becoming the best version of yourself I’m excited to be part of this supportive community, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me

This is one of milestones for my life because i was struggling with public speaking unexpectedly friend of mine told about this place after l joined i was able to improve self confidence about my public speaking through toastmasters club i got opportunities to enhance speaking skills as well as i have been learning extra knowledge about the English language That was useful for my career life when i am going through a conversation with others

The costumes, the laughter, and the electrifying speeches created an unforgettable evening that perfectly captured the Halloween spirit

KDU Toastmasters Club

It was a Tuesday morning, I received an unexpected invitation from Marketers VPE to play the role of an evaluator at the Moratuwa Toastmasters Club Intrigued by the opportunity to test my skills in a new setting, I eagerly accepted

Little did I know that this seemingly ordinary Tuesday would turn into a memorable experience As I stepped into the club on a rainy Saturday afternoon, I felt a sense of both anticipation and uncertainty The familiar faces of a few members eased my nerves, but the majority of the club was still a mystery to me.

I was fortunate enough to witness a couple of well-crafted speeches, including an inspiring icebreaker that left a lasting impression The club's exco team had done an exceptional job organizing the meeting, and the active participation of the members showcased their dedication and enthusiasm

I left the club feeling grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of such a positive and supportive community. A special thanks to the VPE of Moratuwa Toastmasters for extending the invitation and allowing me to experience this heartwarming welcome
