Happy Start-of-Summer, Llamas!

LTG'S WELCOME

Now that the school year has ended, be sure to utilize your new-found time towards Key Club! We are a year-round service club, so give back to your community while having fun with your friends and spending quality time with your family. I strongly encourage you all to set goals for the future! How many service hours do YOU want to serve by the end of the term? How many Division events do you want to go to? Are you saving up to attend RTC, FRN, and DCON? It can even be as simple as introducing yourself to someone new and starting a conversation! I hope you all had an amazing time attending OTC, and learned lots! If you’re interested in looking back at the slides, I have included them in the bottom of my weekly email update to the Division. Now that summer is approaching, I’m definitely using this free time to spend time sleeping, and attending events! Don’t forget that the June DCM will be on the 30th, you’ll get the opportunity to pie your President and DLT! Thank you for reading this edition of the Llama Legends! See you all next month. With a Spark for Service, Vivian Luong Division 2 South Lieutenant Governor 2018-19 ISSUE 1.2 | PAGE 03

club report At the beginning of the month, Alameda Key Club decided to help Uhuru Kitchen Prep and help bake goods and pack them into trucks to be sent off to people. A week later, we went to the Alameda Bike Rodeo to help them set up chairs and run some booths regarding biking. On Mother's Day, some of our members decided to help Oakland Chinatown and pick up garbage at Pick It Up. Later in the month, Alameda Key Club had an interclub event at the Island City Waterways event. On the same day, we had an event at the Cohan Bray House and helped weed the gardens and create soil. To end off the month, Alameda Key Club went to Kiwanis One Day at the Oakland Zoo. It was a very eventful month and we hope to have as many events or more in the future. above: Key Clubbers working at the Alameda Bike Rodeo bottom right: members volunteering at the gardens in the Cohan Bray House

special olympic track & field competition Four officers and five Key Clubbers from Arroyo High School went to the Special Olympic track and field competition, an event hosted on May 5, at Amador Valley High School, Pleasanton. This event gave the athletes a chance to showcase their strengths and skills. As the volunteers, we were separated into three different stages on the different areas of the field, helping with different stations, but we also learned the spirit and determination from them. For the track event, some volunteers stood by the finish line, ready to record their time. Some volunteers were helping with collecting the score papers from each station, and some volunteers helped assist the athletes to their next game, then took them to the awards section, got their picture taken and cheered for them. This event later provided volunteers food such as sandwiches, cookies, apple, and drinks. However, the Special Olympic gave the athletes a chance to challenge themselves, also let the volunteers gain more skills of communicating with others especially people that they do not know, treat everyone with respect and to not judge, or underestimate someone.

childhood place The long-delayed Kiwanis One Day at the zoo finally arrived! Volunteers who already signed up since April were warmly greeted by Kiwanis at the lower parking lot of the zoo. It wasn’t long before we got assigned to do different tasks once everyone arrived. Through past events, members were already experienced with pulling out weeds, so CV easily cleared an area that was previously filled with knee-high invasive plants. Once in a while, members were pulled elsewhere to sweep clean a path that was dusty and covered with fallen leaves. By the time we left for lunch, the paths were clean and ready for parents with their baby strollers to go on. Members were rewarded for working so tirelessly with unlimited hot dogs, plentiful snacks, and water that our kind Kiwanis provided for us. The caretakers of the zoo also acknowledged our hard work by giving us free entry to the zoo and 8 free ride tickets for the next time we come within a year. It was a worthwhile experience for us to clean up the place that holds a special place in our heart since our childhood days of coming to the zoo.

bike festival Our DWS for May was held at the Alameda Bike Festival. Key Clubbers from all across the division came to help out at the festival. They talked to kids about bike safety. This is very important because Lime Bikes are a key form of transportation in Alameda. However, the Key Clubbers also got in tune with their creative side. They helped decorate helmets for the kids to keep them safe and stylish.

Hey there, friend!

EDITOR'S NOTE...

I hope that you've been enjoying your summer so far AND that you've been stacking up on those service hours! Summer is the perfect time to enhance your productivity, so take advantage of all this free time before school starts up again. :) The July DCM is region-wide and also Mario Kart themed (WAOO), so I better see all of you come out and engage in some friendly competition. Personally, I'm pretty excited to meet a whole bunch of new people and, of course, win the Grand Prix Tournament. Remember, if you ever have any ideas on how I could increase the quality of my newsletters or if you have any general comments, then donut hesitate to contact me!
