National Spanish Exam Awards Ceremony at Niles North By Julia Rivera May 14, 2019 Niles North hosted the National Spanish Exam Awards Ceremony this past Saturday at the auditorium. The event was sponsored by the Chicago Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP ). The program started at 10 a.m. and praised all students who reached high academic scores. This annual event is held to recognize students in the Chicagoland area who have done an outstanding job on the National Spanish Exam. These students receive cash prizes. Each year they give out nearly $20,000 in prizes.

U.S. measles case still climbing, exceeding 800 this year By Salmana Mahmood May 14, 2019 A large measles outbreak has hit countries worldwide whereas in US alone 839 individual cases of measles have been confirmed in 23 states from January 1 to May 10, according to Center for Disease Control (CDC). This is the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. since 1994 and since measles was declared eliminated in 2000. On April 30, a Church of Scientology cruise ship, traveling from Curacao to St.Lucia, with measles case on board was put under quarantine. Health officials in Curacao, an island country in the Dutch Caribbean, announced Saturday that the group of 17 crew members and 11 passengers must stay aboard because they're still at risk of contracting measles after a female crew member contracted the disease. According to Fox news, Dr. Izzy Gerstenbluth, an epidemiologist with the Public Health of Curacao, told reporters that the rest of the 318 people who were, in total, on the ship, are free to leave, as "they are not a threat to anyone anymore, and they cannot become sick anymore." Measles starts with fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and sore throat. It’s followed by a rash that spreads over the body. Measles is highly contagious and spreads through coughing and sneezing. According to the CDC, many of the people who contracted measles were unvaccinated. Fortunately our school community is safe from the outbreak, according to Niles North nurse NAME NAME “Our district has a 99% vaccination rate,” NAME said. “Just make sure you wash your hands often” and stay clean. People who are at airports often are at a higher risk of getting the virus but even if your family does not travel internationally, you could come into contact with measles anywhere in your community. Every year, measles is brought into the United States by unvaccinated American or foreign travelers who get measles while they are in other countries. Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk. The best protection against measles is measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. MMR vaccine provides long-lasting protection against all strains of measles. Make sure to check with your doctor to stay updated with your vaccinations
Controversial anti-abortion bill passed in Georgia By Yousef Dababneh May 14, 2019 Last Tuesday, Georgia governor Brian Kemp signed the “heartbeat bill.” This bill says that abortion is banned as early as six weeks of pregnancy, or when a heartbeat can be detected within the fetus, this bill goes through in 2020. People are outraged that yet another state has passed a law of this stature, especially considering most women don’t know they are pregnant at the 6 week stage. Georgia has joined other states such as Alabama, Ohio, Iowa and more in adopting more bills, challenging Roe vs Wade. Not to mention that the bill possesses a penalty of up to 10 years in prison for women who perform abortions. The consequences of having an abortion are blurry right now, but it has even been suggested to go far as murder charges for women who may attempt to abort themselves, with drugs or other unnatural methods. According to Vox, t his is what Dr. Krystal Redman, executive director of the reproductive rights organization Spark Reproductive Justice h ad to say, “It’s basically a forced pregnancy bill, it’s a basic healthcare ban bill.” It seems as though more and more states are adopting absurd abortion bills, which is arguably in part to our current presidency, and the state of the White House.

Trump increases tariffs on China goods from 10% to 25% By Jared Acido May 14, 2019 On May 10, 2019, president Trump increased the tariffs on China goods from an initial 10% to 25% according to the Atlanta Journalism-Constitution. As a result, China responded by putting tariffs on imported American goods worth around $60 million. Recognized as one of the two largest nations in the world, the disputes that are happening is being recognized as a trade war between the two countries and is significantly affecting the U.S economy. For example, as of May 12 the Dow Jones Industrial Average has dropped 617.38 points which affects the stock market . These tariffs affect the goods consumers buy, and with heightened prices, the manufacturers will be forced to buy products at a higher price which means a higher price the consumer pays. From the U.S perspective, it is cheaper to manufacture products from foreign countries and in terms of footwear for example, “according to the World Bank, China accounted for nearly 60% of the footwear the U.S imported in 2017.” Other than footwear, consumers can expect other products to raise their prices in response such as air conditioning, shampoo, bicycles, and countless more.
Editorial: The U.S. opioid crisis - Why isn’t more being done? May 14, 2019 For the first time ever, in extremely rare fashion, Rochester Drug Cooperative, a major pharmaceutical company, was tried and found guilty of crimes similar to what a street level drug dealer would receive. This decision was the first major step in the right direction in the ongoing war against the deadly opioid crisis. Everyone is taught to trust what our doctors and pharmacies suggest for the general public, but this case has sent shockwaves throughout America and its trust in pharmaceutical and medical providers has been shaken. On April 25, Rochester Drug Cooperative and their CEO Laurence Doud III. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York charged one of the country's largest distributors of opioids, with "knowingly and intentionally" violating federal narcotics laws "by distributing dangerous, highly addictive opioids to pharmacy customers that it knew were being sold and used illicitly," according to a press release from ABC7.com. The opioid crisis in America has become increasingly worse over the past decade, stemming back to the 90s when health care providers assured the people that opioids are safe to use. However, as of 2019, it is expected that everyday 130 or more people die due to opioid overdose in America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ( continued on page 4)

Although, people are strangers to the fact that these addictions are usually fueled by big pharmaceutical companies, who insist on the use of these opioids, even when they are not necessary. Increased prescription of these opioids in recent years have led to the mass misuse and abuse of these drugs. Educating the public of the dangers of opioids as well as holding these pharmaceutical companies accountable for their role in this crisis must remain consistent, so that we can put an end to this epidemic once and for all. 130 people being taken away from us on a daily basis holds too much weight for the people to stay silent, especially considering these lost lives are due to our “trustworthy” medical process.
Editorial: A wish for peace, growth in a time of loss
May 14, 2019 Nowadays our lives have become so restless, and seems like peace is disappearing from the society. Major life-changing stuff happens and we move on. As a result, all these crises and bombings has desensitized us. Our lives are moving too fast and looks like just keep on ignoring the sufferings around us. We just need to stop! Stop and take some time to relax, rethink, and just breathe. Let’s take a look at the latest devastations: In March, 51 people died New Zealand Christchurch mosque shooting. In April, More than 200 hundred people died from the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka. Also in April a San Diego synagogue was attacked leaving 1 person dead and 3 injured. And in May, just this month, a student was killed and 8 were injured in a school shooting in Colorado. A lot has already happened this year and will probably continue to happen. Intolerance is increasing in our society and humanity is at the lowest. People seems to care more about themselves and their values and there seems to be no endurance of others. Unfortunately, our society has spent more of our time preparing for catastrophes and little to no time for healing. In our school we have fire drills, tornado drills, and lockdown drills. These are positive and protective measures that need to be taken for everyone’s safety. However, we also need to have a designated crisis drop in center. Just so that we have a room or space for the protocol if something unexpected happens. We know that there is a prayer room and there is the student counselor’s office and things like that. But if shootings and mass killings are going to be the norm, so should it be a norm for students and staff to have a crisis or a healing room. Is there a way that we can actually also have a protocol that’s in place to promote healing, conversation and promote peace? We would love to see a center that inspires hope and peace and love and understanding in this school and other schools. Envision a room where there are tables and soft music. A place where you can not necessarily meditate but just be so that you can pause a little bit and take solace and know that that’s going to be the safe space for everyone. This place would allow the regrowth needed when loss is immeasurable. As times challenge us to endure pain and loss, there should be a place where people can go to take time re-center, heal, and become human once again.

Review: Mikel’s Hair Salon cuts the competition in half
By Justin Thomas May 14, 2019 Mikel’s Hair Salon is my favorite place to go and get a haircut. It’s a very popular place which is why many people go there and get a haircut. There is always a wait but the wait goes by fast because they have 5 barbers working at the same time. The salon is set up beautifully. As soon as you enter you’re welcomed by a beautiful lady who tells you where to go to see the barbers. If there is a wait they have multiple tv’s for you to watch as you wait. All of them are nice, young mature men who introduce themselves, shake your hand, and while getting your haircut they have conversations with you. The prices aren’t the cheapest but it’s all because the quality of their haircuts are the best in Skokie. When I get a haircut at Mikel’s I feel like I grow a friendship between me and my barber. Chance the Rapper is finally releasing a new album By Krisnarong Sakmunwong May 14, 2019 Chance the Rapper announced the release of his Owbum on Twitter on 6th May According to Pat Corcoran, Chance the Rapper manager who confirm the announcement in his Twitter post that read “ Chance the Album. July 2019.” Chance dropped four new track on November 21, 2018 Workout, Wala Cam, I Might Need Security, and 65 and Ingleside. Also Chance dropped two new songs couple month ago, My Own Thing and Supa Bwe Rememory. While he hasn’t confirmed that any of these songs will feature on the new album, it’s surely given fans something to tide them over until the real deal drops. Owbum w ill feature many artists includes of Kanye West, 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, Anderson.Paak., Jeremih and many more artist will feature in this new album.

Tips & tricks for final exams from Niles North upperclassmen By Jared Acido May 14, 2019 As the school year comes to a close, final exams are usually the biggest stress that students have to deal with before relaxing during summer. For the experienced, most have a routine or a strategy on how to tackle the dreaded finals. Four track competitors going to State this weekend By Andrea Gaoiran May 14, 2019 On May 9, senior Rosalie Xavier, sophomores Ninawa Odicho, MayLee Ang-Henrikson, and MacKenna Douglas set school records in the 4 x 100, 4 x 200, and 4 x 400 Relays and qualified for state in each event. Xavier and Odicho finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the 400 M to qualify for State as well. Additionally, Veronica Walinksi finished 1st in the Shot Put and discuss to punch her ticket to State. North will be holding a State Send-Off for the state qualifiers this Thursday, May 16 morning in the Old Commons.

Houston Rockets fall short to the Warriors...again By Justin Thomas May 14, 2019 The Golden State Warriors vs. The Houston Rockets was the most hyped series in the whole playoffs, simply because it’s the rematch of the two teams legendary teams. Last year the Rockets led the Warriors 3-2 but ended up losing at home at Oracle arena and lost the series 4-3. The Rockets said last year that they felt cheated and unlucky because one of their best players Chris Paul was injured and didn’t play for games 6 and 7. Fast forward to present time and it’s the second round of the playoffs and the two teams meet up again. The Warriors won the first two games at home and then lost the next two games on the road. Unfortunately in game 5, the best player on the Warriors, Kevin Durant, came down with a calf injury with 2:10 left to go in the 3rd quarter. This was a challenging loss for the Warriors but they still managed a way to win the game at home. Last Friday, Game 6 went back and forth between the two teams. Guard for the Warriors Stephen Curry finished the first half with 0 points and ended the game with 33 points, 23 of those were in the 4th quarter. The Rockets put up a good fight as Guard Chris Paul scored 27 and James Harden put up 35. Sadly for the Rockets, they didn’t have an answer for Stephen Curry and couldn’t taken advantage of Kevin Durant being out which lead to them losing to the Warriors in 6 games. The final score of game 6 was 118-115. As the Warriors move on to play the Portland Trailblazers to see who advances to the NBA finals.
2019 NCAA division 1 college football season By Krisnarong Sakmuwong May 14, 2019 Many college football program has started their spring training. There first college game will be played on August 24. Couple match up will be Florida gators vs. Miami Hurricanes and Arizona Wildcats vs. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. But August 31 will the first full week of college football it will features big matchups like Auburn, ranking 10 in the college football ranking, vs. Oregon at Jerry World (AT&T Stadium in Texas). This year's semi-finals will be played on December 28 2019 at the Peach bowl in Atlanta. Also the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. Finally the championship game will be play on January 13, 2020 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in New Orleans.
