WELCOME FROM THE CHANCELLOR CONTENTS Dear Buccaneer fans, On behalf of the Blinn College District, I welcome you to another great season of Buccaneer athletics as we continue a proud legacy that includes 41 national championships since 1987.

In addition to their success in intercollegiate competition, Blinn students enjoy a supportive community at a campus that continues to grow. In recent years, the Blinn-Brenham Campus has welcomed the Kruse Center, a 36,000-square-foot student recreation and activities center that also hosts Buccaneer volleyball and basketball games; the Doyle Coatney Center, an 11,184-square-foot indoor baseball and softball workout facility, and Mill Creek Hall, a 464-bed residence hall.

This year, construction is underway on the new science, technology, engineering, and innovation building that will offer state-of-the-art instructional space for Blinn’s most cutting-edge programs. This exciting facility includes a 3,000-square-foot innovation lab and allows Blinn to introduce innovative programs such as cybersecurity and drone maintenance and repair.

These new courses will add to Blinn’s reputation as one of the state’s leading community colleges. According to Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board data, Blinn’s academic transfer rate ranks No. 1 in the state and far exceeds the statewide average. Just as importantly, out-of-district Blinn students save 44% in tuition and fees compared to the average state university. Few combinations can offer this combination of educational excellence and affordability.

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) is the governing body of two-year college athletics, offering athletic and academic opportunities to college students. It is the second largest national intercollegiate athletic organization in the United States with over 500 member schools in 43 states. DR. KENNETH MASENDA Athletic Student Success Coach

Dr. Kenneth Masenda joined the Blinn College District as an athletic student success coach in January 2017.

His duties include advising each of Blinn’s NJCAA athletic programs as well as Blinn’s athletic training program. His advising duties also include Blinn’s KIPP, OneGoal, and YesPrep programs. Dr. Masenda also serves as an adjunct instructor in the Humanities Department.

Prior to his arrival at Blinn, Dr. Masenda was an academic advisor for athletics at Tyler Junior College. In his six years at Tyler, he oversaw academic advising for all 12 of Tyler’s NJCAA athletic programs as well as advising duties for Tyler’s athletic training program. He also taught as an adjunct instructor for the college and assisted in other duties with the departments of advising, admissions, and the registrar’s office.

Dr. Masenda earned a doctorate in higher education from Texas A&M UniversityCommerce in December 2015. His dissertation was entitled “Academic Advising for Student Athletes at Two-Year Colleges.” He also holds a master’s degree from A&M - Commerce, a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington, and an associate degree from Navarro College. He is a native of Denton, Texas.

SUPPORTING THE BUCS IN THE CLASSROOM

Facilities Located in the Academic Building on the Brenham Campus, the Brenham Learning Center is open year-round for the convenience of student-athletes.

The Learning Center is equipped with state-of-the-art computers and academic resources to assist student-athletes in their studies.

On average, student-athletes spend 4-5 hours in the academic facilities each week, with tutors on hand at all times to help with any subject.

HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH SCOTT SCHUMACHER Scott Schumacher enters his ninth season as the Buccaneers’ athletic director and head men’s basketball coach.

In 2019-20, Schumacher oversaw an athletic department that launched men’s and women’s golf programs; saw its men’s soccer team make its second playoff appearance in the program’s two-year history; its volleyball, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball teams make trips to Region XIV Tournaments; and five teams named NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year.

Under Schumacher’s direction, the 2019-20 men’s basketball team finished the season with a 23-10 overall record and competed in the Region XIV Championship game. All nine sophomores graduated from Blinn College and signed to continue their academic and playing careers with four-year colleges and universities. Six of nine sophomores signed with Division I programs.

In addition, Tristan Ikpe broke Blinn College’s single-season rebound record with 344 and Blinn’s career rebound record with 877.

In 30 years as a junior college head coach, Schumacher has compiled a career record of 583-347. He is ranked 14th in all-time wins among active men’s basketball coaches across 439 NJCAA programs. He has led three different junior college programs to conference championships and top-10 national rankings in the NJCAA polls. In five of the last six seasons, Schumacher has led the Buccaneers to 20 or more wins. He has coached collegiate basketball for 33 years and is in his 12th year as an athletic director.

Twenty-six of 30 years have been spent as a head basketball coach in the Region XIV Conference. Schumacher previously coached league rivals Paris Junior College and Kilgore College, and is the only coach in TEAC history to lead two different programs to a conference championship. Prior to Blinn, Schumacher was the athletic director and head basketball coach at North Dakota State College of Science, leading the Wildcats to a national tournament bid and three conference championships.

Schumacher has coached 12 NJCAA All-Americans. More than 100 of his players have signed Division I scholarships and more than 33 have gone on to play professionally. He has had the privilege to coach an SEC player of the year, a Big 12 Tournament MVP, a Big Sky Tournament MVP, and an NCAA slam dunk champion.

In addition to his duties as head coach, Schumacher served two terms as president of the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Association, a position voted upon by his colleagues. During his time with the association, he served as chair for the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame selection committee.

As the president, he began the NJCAA Basketball Coaches All-Star Game, which is now played during the prestigious basketball coaching clinic held annually in Las Vegas. In recognition of his work, the Scott Schumacher Sportsmanship Award is given annually to an all-star participant. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

From 2005-09, Schumacher served on the USA Basketball Collegiate Selection Committee along with coaching legends such as the University of Kansas head coach Bill Self, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, and Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo.

Schumacher’s father is a former superintendent at nearby Waller ISD, where Schumacher’s mother also taught. Schumacher’s dad resides in Houston. Scott and his wife, Lisa, are the proud parents of three children: Ross, Lonna, and Alec.

MEN’S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS DYLAN SHIELDS

ASSISTANT MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH / REDSHIRT PROGRAM COORDINATOR Dylan Shields enters his third season as the Blinn College assistant men’s basketball coach and redshirt program coordinator. Prior to Blinn, he served as the assistant men’s basketball coach at East Central Community College for two seasons.

Shields was named the 2019-20 Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) assistant coach of the year for the junior college level. Blinn has qualified for the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament and posted 20-plus wins in each of his two seasons on the coaching staff.

The Buccaneers finished the 2019-20 season with a 23-10 overall record and 11-8 conference record. Blinn eliminated Coastal Bend College and Jacksonville College to reach the Region XIV championship.

In 2018-19, the Blinn men’s basketball team finished the season with a 21-10 record and a trip to the Region XIV Tournament.

During Shields’ first season at East Central Community College, the Warriors won seven of their last eight games and competed in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges Tournament and NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.

While at ECCC, Shields recruited and coached three players who went on to sign Division I scholarships: Thurston McCarty (Cornell University), Cameron Diggs (University of North Alabama), and Jaquan Dotson (Savannah State University).

Prior to his first assistant coaching position at ECCC, Shields spent two seasons with the University of North Texas under head men’s basketball coach Tony Benford. He spent the 2014-15 season as a graduate assistant and video coordinator. In 2015, he took over as the interim director of operations for three months. He spent the 2015-16 season as the assistant director of operations.

Shields was a student manager for the University of Arkansas men’s basketball team all four years that he attended. He graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science in Education with a specialty in kinesiology.

He was raised in El Dorado, Ark., and was a three-year letterman on the Parkers Chapel High School basketball team.

Shields is married to Taylor Smith of Choudrant, La. They have a daughter, Finley, and son, Wesson.

ADAM SCHWARTZ

ASSISTANT MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH Adam Schwartz enters his second season as the assistant men’s basketball coach for the Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers finished the 2019-20 season with a 23-10 overall record and 11-8 conference record.

Blinn eliminated Coastal Bend College and Jacksonville College to reach the Region XIV Championship.

Schwartz came to Blinn after serving as the head boys varsity basketball coach at Mojave High School (North Las Vegas, Nev.) for three seasons. In 2018-19, the Rattlers had one of the most successful seasons in Mojave history, going 22-8 and winning the program’s first 3A Southern Region Championship and making its second appearance in the state tournament. Following the 2018-19 season, Schwartz was named the Nevada Preps Coach of the Year. Schwartz also coached with the Las Vegas Prospects Nike EYBL program, where he had the privilege of coaching multiple top-100 players, two McDonald’s All-Americans, and one top-15 NBA draft pick.

Prior to Mojave, Schwartz spent nine seasons as a men’s basketball coach at Lamar Community College. Schwartz served as Lamar’s head coach from 2009-15 and as an assistant from 2007-09. He was named the Region IX South Sub-Region Coach of the Year after leading the Runnin’ Lopes to their first Region IX South Sub-Region Championship in 2010-11. In two seasons as an assistant coach, Schwartz helped lead the Runnin’ Lopes to a 47-21 record. He also helped lead Lamar to its first Region IX Championship and NJCAA National Tournament appearance, placing fifth in 2008-09.

Schwartz spent the 2005-06 season as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Colorado Northwestern Community College. Schwartz served as the head coach the following season, where he was able to increase the win total and complete the best two-year stretch the program had seen in many years.

His coaching career began as a student assistant at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) from 2002-05 under coaches Charlie Spoonhour (02-04) and Lon Kruger (04-05). He also spent time as a volunteer assistant basketball coach from 1999-2004 at Durango High School (Las Vegas, NV) under hall of fame coach Al LaRocque.

Schwartz is married to the former Meagan O’Connell-Carne of Dayton, Ohio.

HEAD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH JEFF JENKINS Jeff Jenkins enters his 19th season as head coach of the Blinn College women’s basketball program in 2020-21.

Jenkins’ 370-208 record at Blinn makes him the winningest coach in program history. In 21 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Jenkins holds a 423-246 overall record (.632 winning percentage).

His 2012-13 squad recorded the program’s best season ever, going 32-4 and reaching the Elite Eight of the NJCAA National Championships. The Buccaneers’ victories over Kaskaskia, Ill., and Darton, Ga., marked the first national tournament wins in program history. At season’s end, Jenkins was recognized as the Region XIV Conference Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.

In 2013-14, his team finished with 28 wins and made a return trip to the national tournament. Blinn made it to the NJCAA Division I Elite Eight after beating Baton Rouge and Walters State before dropping its third game of the tournament.

In 2015-16, his team made its third appearance in the national tournament in four years and finished with 26 wins. Blinn won the Region XIV Tournament in Angelina for the first time since 1988 and beat Itawamba Community College in the first round of nationals. Jenkins was named the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Women’s Junior College Coach of the Year. Jenkins won the District L Coach of the Year for winning the regional tournament and received the Alberta Lee Cox Sportsmanship Award at the NJCAA National Tournament in Lubbock.

Jenkins spent three years at Paris Junior College before coming to Blinn in 2002. Prior to his arrival at Paris, the women’s basketball team had won just four games the previous season. His first season saw a 10-game turnaround, and the team finished 14-16. In his third and final season, the team finished 23-8 and broke the school record for wins in a season (the previous record was 17). His team made the Region XIV Tournament, and Jenkins was named Co-Coach of the Year in the region.

A native of Round Rock, he played his collegiate basketball at Midwestern State University and Howard Payne University. He was named team captain at Howard Payne during his junior and senior seasons and was named to the all-conference academic team both seasons. During his senior season, the team won the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association

Jenkins began his coaching career in 1995 at Midwestern State University, where he worked for two seasons under former Blinn coach Wayne Williams. In 1997, he was named full-time assistant coach at Midwestern State, working under Jennifer Fasnacht-Hull, a former player and assistant coach at Blinn College.

Jenkins earned his bachelor’s degree in sport and exercise science from Howard Payne University and his master’s degree in physical education from Midwestern State University.

Jenkins and his wife, Tiffany, have three daughters, Allyson, Lindy, and Rhyan. He enjoys spending his free time with Tiffany in supporting their three daughters in extracurricular activities.

In addition, the Blinn women’s basketball team was named a 2019-2020 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year for posting a 3.25 GPA.

ASSISTANT WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH Brianna Luton enters her fourth season as an assistant coach for Blinn College women’s basketball.

Blinn finished the 2020 season ranked 24th in the nation after posting a 25-7 overall record and 13-4 conference record. The Buccaneers defeated Paris Junior College 62-58 in the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament quarterfinals. In addition, the Blinn women’s basketball team was named a 2019-2020 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year for posting a 3.25 GPA. 14

Luton was a member of the Buccaneer women’s basketball team under head coach Jeff Jenkins for two seasons in 2013-15. Her record as a player during that time was 48-18. Luton was a member of the Blinn women’s basketball team that finished in the Elite Eight of the 2014 NJCAA Division I National Tournament.

Following Blinn, Luton finished her playing career at Alcorn State University.

As a senior, she was the team’s third leading scorer with 9.6 points per game and made 50 three-pointers. Luton graduated from Alcorn in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in general studies.

Luton is a native of Houston, where she was a first-team all-district player for legendary coach Troy Gillespie at Westside High School.

Luton is the daughter of Dayna Luton and niece of John and Julie Luton.

DON WILHELM AWARD DON WILHELM AWARD

The Don Wilhelm Award is named after former Blinn College athletic director Don Wilhelm, an NJCAA Hall of Famer who served the College for 10 years. The award is given to the most valuable player on the Blinn women’s basketball team following each season.

After leading the Blinn College women’s basketball team on offense and defense, sophomore guard Kristine Ezimako was named the 2020 Don Wilhelm Award as the Buccaneers’ most valuable player.

Ezimako was named all-region and all-conference after leading Blinn with 15.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. She led the Buccaneers with 69 blocks and 59 steals and led the region with a 42.5 three-point percentage.

Ezimako also earned Region XIV all-tournament honors after leading Blinn with 30 points and 22 rebounds in two postseason games.

Throughout Ezimako’s two seasons with Blinn, she totaled 807 points and 460 rebounds.

BLINN COLLEGE - SPRING ATHLETIC GUIDE 2021

HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH TERRY GAMBLE Terry Gamble enters his third season as the Blinn College head volleyball coach with 24 years of collegiate coaching experience. He was inducted into the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007 after winning three NJCAA volleyball championships and three NJCAA Coach of the Year awards.

In his career, he has compiled a 930320 record (.744 winning percentage).

Gamble ranks first in all-time wins among active coaches in the NJCAA with 801. In addition, he ranks sixth in all-time wins in the NJCAA. Under Gamble’s direction, Blinn finished the 2019 season ranked No. 19 in the nation with a 29-8 overall record. In 2019, four Buccaneers were awarded allconference honors and five moved on to four-year programs to continue their playing careers. Essence Clerkley was named the Region XIV All-Conference Freshman of the Year. In addition, the Blinn volleyball team was named a 2019-20 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year after posting a 3.21 GPA. The 2018 Buccaneers posted a 29-10 record and finished the season ranked No. 17 in the nation. Blinn went undefeated in conference play with an 8-0 record for the Region XIV South Zone Division Championship. After an outstanding first season at Blinn, which included his 900th career win, Gamble was named the Region XIV South Zone Division Coach of the Year.

In 2018, six Buccaneers were awarded all-conference honors, two received all-Region XIV Tournament honors, and four moved on to four-year universities to continue their playing careers. Shelby Sheets was named a NJCAA All-American, AVCA Two-Year College All-American, and the Region XIV All-Conference Volleyball Player of the Year, and Roxanne Morris was named the Region XIV All-Conference Setter of the Year. In addition, Blinn was named a 2018-2019 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year for maintaining a team grade point average of 3.0 or better throughout the academic year.

Gamble came to Blinn after four seasons as Jacksonville State University’s head coach, where he took the team to three conference tournaments.

Gamble spent four seasons at McNeese State University, one season as the head coach at the former Midland Lutheran College, now Midland University, and spent one year as a first assistant coach at Texas Tech in 2009.

A majority of Gamble’s coaching career has been spent at the junior college level. From 2005 to 2008, Gamble served as the head coach at Iowa Western Community College. In 2006, Gamble was voted the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Coach of the Year after guiding the Reivers to the NJCAA National Championship that year. He also was named the AVCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year and coached the AVCA Player of the Year in 2006. He took IWCC to a seventh-place finish at the National Championships in 2007 and a fourth-place finish in 2008.

Gamble had a successful run as head coach at St. Clair County Community College from 1999 to 2004, where he led the Skippers to national championship titles in 2000 and 2004 and a third-place finish in 2001.

His first coaching stint was at Mott Community College from 1995 to 1998.

In 1998, he led Mott to a ninth-place finish at the National Championships.

Gamble had a top-20 national ranking in 15 of his 16 junior college seasons and was elected to the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame and Iowa Western Sports Hall of Fame.

Gamble’s coaching honors also include three District C Coach of the Year awards, three District D Coach of the Year awards, one District 8 Coach of the Year, seven Regional Coach of the Year honors, and seven Conference Coach of the Year accolades. He has won eight regional championships, six state championships, and 13 conference championships, and has coached 15 All-Americans, 20 Academic All-Americans, three NJCAA National Players of the Year, 17 all-tournament players, 19 regional players of the year, 35 all-region tournament players, 14 conference players of the year, 38 allstate/all-region players, 47 all-conference and 31 all-conference honorable mention players. He also was selected the president of the NJCAA Coaches Association in 2007.

Gamble graduated from the U.S. Sports Academy. He was an All-American setter and helped win a national championship in 1997 with Western Michigan’s club team.

Gamble lives in Brenham with his wife, Krista, along with their three puppies, Thor, Loki, and Juco. He has three children, Kyle, Kristi, and Kody, and two stepchildren, Austin and Kourtlyn, along with five grandchildren.

VOLLEYBALL ASSISTANT BECKY FLETCHER

Becky Fletcher enters her first season as the Buccaneers’ assistant volleyball coach.

Fletcher comes to Blinn after serving as the head volleyball coach at Frostburg (Md.) State University for nine seasons, where she guided the Bobcats to 107 wins and five Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament appearances.

Under Fletcher’s direction, the Bobcats earned three American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) all-region awards and nine all-conference awards.

Fletcher served on the CAC Volleyball Committee Chair from 2014-2017, as a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Advisor from 2011-2019, and as the Division III National SAAC Chairman from 2015-2017.

Fletcher had a four-year stint as the head men’s and women’s volleyball coach at the State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT). On the women’s side, Fletcher led SUNYIT to three North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament appearances and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009. She was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2008 and won 61 total matches from 2008-2010. Fletcher helped launch the men’s program and led the Wildcats to their first postseason appearance in 2011.

Fletcher started her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Utica (N.Y.) College, where she spent the 2006 season. In 2009, she was honored by the AVCA as one of 30 up-and-coming volleyball coaches under the age of 30.

Fletcher was a three-time All-President’s Athletic Conference selection and was named the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2002 as a player for Washington & Jefferson College. In 2005, she was part of the team that won the PAC Tournament title and advanced to the ECAC Tournament. She graduated in 2006 with a degree in biology and pre-health.
