Love is in the air 20 couples tie the knot on Robben Island ISOLABANTU NEWS

T

wenty couples tied the knot on Robben Island in Cape Town on Valentine’s Day, February 14. It was the 17th wedding ceremony hosted at the former prison where people were isolated, banished and exiled for hundreds of years. It has since been re invented to a place of love. Speaking to Ilisolabantu, couples couldn`t hold their tears of joy. Grace Msibi, a school teacher, and her husband Sumanga Michael Msibi said having a wedding at Robben Island on Valentine`s Day was a privilege. “This place is known as a place of horror where political prisoners were kept during apartheid. Today it’s an Island of love. Just like the biblical calvary that was known to be a place of punishing thugs but it turned to be a place of greatness after Jesus died there. My husband and I are now part of the Robben Island history,” she said. Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba presented marriage certificates to

The Chief Heritage Officer, Pascal Taruvinga, said the 20 couples that wedded at Robben Island today symbolises 20 years of Robben Island as a Heritage Institution.

We are not here just to witness the ceremony but to witness the new life,” said Gigaba. “We pray for God’s blessings to all the couples.” Another couple, Monica Jaxa and husband Sakhiwo Ngqani said they have been waiting for this day. “As a couple we feel blessed to be part of Robben Island,” said Monica. “I’m very happy to have a wedding here, I actually enjoyed a lot since it’s my first time being here,” he said. R39,3 million library for Dunoon

A

partnership between the DA led Western Cape government and its led City of Cape Town will see the construction of a R39, 3 million library in Dunoon township near Milnerton. A contractor was recently appointed and has already started clearing the site in preparation for building to start. The City relocated 12 families who were living in shacks on the site and demolished their homes to pave way for the construction of the multi million rand project. ANC ward 104 councilor, Lubabalo Makeleni, said the City provided building materials for the relocated families and arranged for connection of electricity at the New Rest squatter camp. “Our children have to travel four kilometres to Table View library, some have to travel more than 20 kilometres to Milnerton to access a library, sometimes traveling on foot. The building of a library in Dunoon means that our children will perform better at school” he said. He said construction of the library will also create work opportunities for the community and provide construction contracts to local contractors to work as sub-contractors. “The construction will also boost profits for local vendors who will sell their merchandise at the construction site,” he said. In addition, when construction of the library is complete, there will be more job

Sugar tax will cost jobs – Cosatu

PETER LUHANGA

L

abour federation Cosatu has expressed concern that the proposed tax on sugar-sweetened beverages may lead to the loss of thousands of jobs in the sugar industry. Making a submission on Tuesday, February 14, on the proposed tax at a public hearing hosted by Parliament’s committees on finance and health, Cosatu’s parliamentary liaison officer, Matthew Parks, said the trade union feared the effect that the sugar tax – proposed to begin on April 1 – would have on jobs. Cosatu is South Africa’s largest trade union, boasting more than 2 million workers, and is part of the tripartite alliance with the ANC and the SA Communist Party. Parks compared Treasury’s estimate of 5 000 job losses to the figure mooted by the SA Cane Growers’ Association – a 5 817 job loss – adding that the sugar industry employed 79 000 workers on 22 300 farms. The cane growers’ association further estimates that the sugar tax will reduce farm incomes by between 15% and 30%. It goes on to question the affordability of the proposed tax at a time when one out of two farms are heavily indebted and one out of three emerging farms fail. Parks said about 15 000 jobs in the sugar sector had been lost because of lower global prices. He added that 2016 saw 52 000 job losses in the mining sector, 10 000 in the retail

sector and 1 000 in the banking sector. Vacancies in the public service and at universities had been frozen, and thousands of posts at Telkom and the SA Post Office outsourced. He made reference to last month’s 1 350 job losses in the poultry sector and the laying off thousands farm workers over the past 20 years. Parks said all this was against the background of the reduced mining sector workforce from more than a million 20 years ago to current estimates of 400 000. In addition, he said, 100 000 jobs were lost in the textile industry in the 1990s when government lifted tariffs “too quickly”, and the number of Telkom staff had shrunk from 50 000 to 5 000.

Swimming pool hours to save water

D

ue to the current water restrictions implemented in the City of Cape Town, the operating times at all public swimming pools for the remainder of the summer season has been changed with effect from 13 February 2017. With the exception of Sea Point, Mnandi Resort pool and four City indoor facilities, all public swimming pools has been closed from Monday to Thursday. The swimming pools will only be open to the public from 14h00 until 17h00 on Fridays and from 10h00 to 17h00 on Saturdays and Sundays, until the end of March when pools will close for the winter season. “With the low usage levels during the week, it is impractical to keep these pools open while facing the current water crisis in Cape Town,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member Alderman JP Smith.

Because these swimming pools need to be backwashed every day in order to maintain optimum water quality levels, it is estimated that more than 1 680 kl of water per day will be saved just by eliminating the daily backwash of these pools. With pools only staying open on weekends, only one backwash per week will be needed. Showers at pools will be switched off and splashing in pools will also be monitored and restricted. Only normal bathing costumes may be worn when swimming at public swimming pools as significant water can be wasted just by swimming in casual clothing. “The situation is not ideal, but I trust the public can appreciate the severity of the situation and will support this measure, over and above their individual water-saving efforts,” said Smith.

Umphathiswa wezekhaya uMalusi Gigaba unikezele isiqinisekiso somtshato kubo bonke aba bebezimanya. “Umtshato sisithembiso sothando nokuzinikela okungapheliyo. SPORT

Legal dispute stalls sports facility project

PETER LUHANGA

O

n 13 January 2014, the City of Cape Town announced that its R16, 5 million investment in Dunoon’s multi-use sports facility was at an advanced stage and progressing well. The project entailed the upgrade of drainage to the sports fields, construction of a skate-able forecourt, a climbing wall and a slide, a detention pond, spectator seating, hard and soft landscaping, an informal basketball or netball tree, mixeduse hard courts, a mixed-use synthetic surface court, a spray park and a changing room, office facility and clubhouse. At the time, the City expected the project to be completed before the end of the 2014/15 financial year, which brought much excitement to the community. Three years

later the clubhouse is standing incomplete, with no contractor on site, the soccer field not being used and this is angering the residents. However, the Dunoon spray park – which forms a part of the multi-use sports facility - was completed and was officially opened by mayoral committee member for community services and special projects, Belinda Walker, in December 2015. Since then residents have been looking forward to the completion of the other phases of the multi million rand investment. And they are still waiting! In 2014, mayoral committee member for energy, environmental and spatial planning, JohanVan der Merwe, said planning and design phase for the northern sport facility started in 2011 and the first phase of construction began in 2012.

Isolabantu News, set out to establish what has stalled the project for two years since the expected date of completion. Area north mayco member, Suzette Little told Isolabantu News, that the project has been stalled because of a legal dispute between the City and contractor. Little said the Dunoon sports ground development was completed. “In order to get the occupation certificate for the building, the property had to be subdivided, survey diagrams drawn up, and the new property registered, which we are currently doing,” said Little. When asked when the rest of sports facility eventually be completed, the City left the question unanswered. In the meantime local football clubs continue to play league games outside

the township. ANC ward 104 councilor, Lubabalo Makeleni, said local football clubs affiliated to the South African Football Association (SAFA) constantly demanded answers from him asking when they will be able to start using the sports field.“The local soccer clubs want answers and when I ask the City I always get the same answer that they are waiting for certain documents to be signed,” said Makeleni. “It’s unacceptable as people are impatient and want to know why they have this infrastructure for two years and it`s not being put into use. It’s very embarrassing to be a councilor in a ward where there is a project that cost millions of tax-payers money and yet the final product is not finalised.”
