espite these exorbitant prices, people are flocking to the squatter camp to buy the shacks.

New Rest was established by the City as a Temporary Relocation Area which saw the City building decent one bedroom shacks for some residents that needed to be relocated to pave way for various service delivery services in the greater Dunoon area and Kwa 5 squatter camp.

Eskom electrified the squatter camp and each shack has its own electricity meter box.

There is also gravel roads passing through the squatter camp making it accessible to motorists.

In addition, the residents in this bubbling squatter camp have access to portable water and chemical toilets.

Dan Lidzale, 37, is living in luxury after successfully applying for a personal loan at the bank and bought a shack for a whooping price of R37,000.

He had since upgraded it to a three bedroom shack with a lounge, kitchen and a garage that can accommodate two cars.

Lidzale, who is a crane operator shares the shack with his family comprising of his wife, and their five children.

His main bedroom is complete with a wardrobe, not common in many upgraded shacks in squatter camps.

“I’m free. I have no stress,”said Lidzale.

Before purchasing the shack, he said he rented space at the backyard of an RDP house where he built a shack paying R350 a month for the space and an additional R150 for electricity.

“I was fed up of renting,” he said.

Sinethemba Matomela, 40, bought a one bedroom shack for R25,000 and demolished it building a three bedroom shack with an additional lounge and kitchen.

He shares it with his wife and two children aged 10 and 12.

“I liked the area that is why I bought the shack. There are roads here and there are few fire incidents compared to other squatter camps. We feel safer here,” said Matomela.

As demand for the squatter camp is growing, he said, one bedroom shack prices has skyrocketed to R40,000.

“The prices of one bedroom shacks has gone up to R40000 and people are buying,” he said.

In the meantime, the normal price for shacks in squatter camps around Dunoon and Kwa 5 squatter camp is between R3,500 and R4,000.

afana Bafana coach Ephraim Shakes Mashaba has applauded his players for qualifying for the group stages of the 2018 Fifa World Cup Russia qualifiers following a 1-0 victory over Angola in the second leg played at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Tuesday, 17 November.

South Africa advanced 4-1 on aggregate after winning the first leg 3-1 in Angola (Friday, 13 November).

“I would like to applaud my players for sticking to the game plan which saw us proceed to Round 3. We are on the verge of turning things around, we are not there yet. It would be important to keep the momentum when we get to the Afcon qualifiers in March. The more you play, the more you get familiar with the system,” said Mashaba.

“But let us not deceive ourselves, even though we don’t know who will be in our group, it is going to be a tough journey to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. We have to be at our best to get through the group stages, irrespective of who we meet.”

The Bafana Bafana mentor made three changes in the second leg following the red card handed to Andile Jali, and an injury to defender Anele Ngcongca – Dean Furman and Thulani Hlatshwayo filled up the positions respectively while Mpho Makola came on for Thulani Serero.

It almost proved costly as Bafana Bafana could not get into gear.

“We knew they had nothing to lose and they will bring the game to us. At times we were playing with our backs against the wall but our boys stood firm. But when we played our kind of football we managed to control the proceedings and stop them from causing any harm.

They were also a bit unfortunate not to have scored when we were saved by the upright, but that’s how the game goes.

“We started very slow because players thought we had wrapped up the game in Angola, but with time we managed to get to our rhythm.”

I would really love to see myself qualifying this team for this tournament. I am well aware it is not going to be easy, but this is a good start. What we did here, going to Angola to come back with a win and finishing off the job in style at home is something to be proud of. I am really proud of this team,” concluded Mashaba.
