Fake doctor bust in Dunoon PETER LUHANGA

A

52-year-old man is scheduled to make his second appearance in the Cape Town magistrate’s court on July 5 after he was arrested on May 23 for allegedly illegally practicing medicine in Dunoon.

The accused, Nigerian national Chinidum Ahaiwe, was charged with fraud and released on a R1 000 bail on May 24. Ahaiwe made his first court appearance on May 27 where his bail was extended until his next court appearance next month.

Social network users need to be mindful when sharing pictures of missing children and making them go viral, as the pictures and personal details could circulate for a long time, warns the Western Cape social development department.

In addition, parents and guardians should monitor children’s social media and internet usage, states the department.

While sharing pictures of missing children may seem like the best thing to do, parents and guardians are encouraged to first contact the police if they have information relating to the missing child, says the department’s head of communications, Esther Lewis.

“If you see a missing child post (on social networking sites), before sharing, check the date of the original post and see if there have been updates (as often old posts are circulated),” said Lewis.

Regarding children’s safety, she says children should be taught vital information such as their full names, home address, and their parents’ full names and contact details. They should be taught personal safety and need to be made aware of what a dangerous situation is and where to go to find safety. They need to be taught to not hug strangers or people who make them feel uncomfortable, she said.

Children should also be given a list of emergency contact numbers, such as the police, trusted neighbours, and neighborhood watches, and have them saved on their phone, if they have one.

Also, keep entrances such as gates closed and locked.

The department advises caregivers to ensure that in their absence, children are cared for by a competent person and young children never left unsupervised.

Caregivers should talk to children openly about their own safety and what they can do to remain safe. Parents should also consider installing safety devices or alarms, exterior lights, and locks at the home.

“Be aware of who your child is friends with and have their contact numbers. When a child goes missing, firstly report it to SAPS. If an investigation number is linked to the matter, an immediate preliminary search will be done,” she says.

Fake doctor bust in Dunoon

FROM PAGE 1 He was bust after allegedly practicing medicing in Dunoon for two years. After an investigation undertaken by the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA), he was arrested and detained at the Table View police station.

The HPCSA found that the accused practiced under a registered practice belonging to Dr. Senzo Ntshalintshali, who practices medi-

cine in Mpumalanga.

“As an unregistered person pretending to be a medical doctor and had seen many unsuspecting patients, his actions in this regards placed the health of the community and the public at large in danger,” said HPCSA senior manager Eric Mphaphuli.

Bogus doctors, said Mphaphuli, are not professionals or registered doctors and therefore there is a danger of them providing the wrong diagnosis and wrong medication. This places

the health of the public at risk, which may have serious consequences to the health of the patients and delays the patients receiving help from qualified and registered doctors.

Regarding Dr. Senzo Ntshalintshali, Mphaphuli said it is unethical for a registered practitioner to appoint or use an unregistered person as a locum at his practice, and where there is evidence that a registered practitioner appointed or allowed an unregistered person to practice, such practitioner is subjected to a disciplinary process for professional misconduct. Registered health practitioners are expected to observe and comply with ethical rules of their professions at all times, he said.

This year alone, he said the HPCSA has bust eight fake doctors in the Western Cape and 60 nationally. “The main objective of the HPCSA is to guide the profession and protect the public.”

He also said the HPCSA has noticed an increase in the number of fraudulent medical certificates issued by unregistered persons to employees who failed to go to work, which has a negative impact on the production at companies and the economy of the country.

Table View police spokesperson Captian Adriana Chandler confirmed that Ahaiwe was

bust in Dunoon.

“The accused Chinidum Ahaiwe, 52 years old, was arrested on 23 May 2019 at 12:30.

Charge: Fraud. He was released on R1000 -00 bail the following day at 19:30. His first court appearance was on 27 May 2019 at Cape Town Magistrates Court. He was again released by the court on bail and due to appear on 05 July 2019. The court case number is 17/924/19,” said Chandler.

Mphaphuli said the HPCSA encourages members of the public to verify the registration status of the medical practitioner they are entrusting their health and privacy to, before they are examined.

He says after registration with the HPCSA, practitioners are issued with a registration certificate and a practicing card which must be renewed every year.

“Members of the public have the right to request practitioners to produce their practicing cards to verify if indeed the person is a registered practitioner. They can also use the I-register on our website to check the registration status of the person, or phone our call Centre 012 338 9300 with the name of the person to verify,” he said.

Mandla Mahashe Overcrowding and lack of housing opportunities are just some of the reasons why twostorey shacks are mushrooming in Dunoon.

This is according to some of the owners of these self made structures which are visible from the N7.

At Ekupholeni informal settlement, which exists on what used to be a municipal sports field, residents could on Tuesday be seen building a second storey using corrugated iron sheeting.

Residents point to overpopulation in Dunoon as the root cause of the trend that has seen shiny zinc homes towering above the busy township.

Ekupholeni informal settlement leader Masigcinane Pesi said residents have no option but to “go up”.

“This township hasn’t seen any housing development despite the number of people moving here. As a result, we have invaded unused land to build our shacks as we have no proper homes,” said Pesi.

“However, this is not enough because even in our areas there is insufficient space, so people decided to build these structures for these two-storey shacks,” he said.

Some of the owners of these double-storey shacks have been accused of renting out the upper level for income.

“Most of the people here are not working so for some of them it’s the only way of earn-

ing an income. What must they do?” said Pesi.

Another resident, Makamohelo Motsoahae, echoed Pesi’s sentiment regarding the necessity of building upwards.

“Before my husband, two kids and I moved here (to Ekupholeni), we were renting a flat here in Dunoon. Our rent was R1 500 plus R300 for electricity and we just were not coping, so we moved here,” said Motsoahae.

She said she moved into Ekupholeni last year and their first shack structure could accommodate all of her family because she also opened a small shop to earn a living.

“In fact, we actually had to make it small at the request of the councillour so that we can create a road for service delivery which was never delivered.

“We are left to fend for ourselves in this area, even the overflowing drains have to be fixed by us.”

She said they had no option but to build a two-storey home even though it was not safe.

Pesi said some structures are blown down by the wind while others tumble to the ground because they are not built properly.

He said since they had invaded municipal sports field no service delivery was afforded to them.

“We have no tap water, no electricity and no ablution facilities. The local ward councillor doesn’t know where we relieve ourselves,” he said.

The City has been approached for comment.

Baxter Explains AFCON Exclusions

By Soccer Laduma Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter on Sunday afternoon named his final 23-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations later this month, excluding midfielders Ben Motshwari, Fortune Makaringe and striker Kermit Erasmus.

Asked for his reasoning behind his selection after about a week of having to deal with the withdrawal of Rivaldo Coetzee and Keagan

Dolly, the Englishman said it was “difficult”, but he felt he’d selected a balanced team.

Bafana left on Monday, June 10 for Dubai, where they will face Ghana on Friday before a final practice game against Angola in Cairo prior to their opening Group D clash against Ivory Coast on June 24.

“As you can imagine this has not been an easy process and it is certainly not made easier when we’ve had issues in the camp – the

early injury to Keagan Dolly and then Rivaldo called in the day of the assembly and told us his mother was gravely ill, but we haven’t heard from him since,” Baxter told journalists.

On the other three omissions in Motshwari, Makaringe and Erasmus, the coach suggested their exclusion was not due to a lack of effort.

“I told them that they should look at their selection in the initial squad as a massive boost for their future. I just think that we

have cover in those positions and I have had to pick a couple of players that can maybe double up as centre backs – so that tilted the scale a little bit. We also have a lot of experienced midfielders. But it wasn’t easy to tell them they didn’t make it.”

Will Bafana Play Like Baxter’s Chiefs At AFCON?

By Soccer Laduma On Sunday, Stuart Baxter announced his final 23-man squad for the 2019 African Cup of Nations. Will the former Kaizer Chiefs coach replicate his style of play from his time at Amakhosi?

Although Chiefs always registered quite strong scoring numbers under the British coach, his title-winning sides were always based on a solid backline and substance over style. With SuperSport United, the coach also

focused on having a strong defence first and foremost and using a counter-attacking strategy.

Baxter was in charge of Chiefs when the club conceded a record-low 14 goals in 30 PSL matches in the 2014-15 season, with the side proving deadly on the break and very dangerous on set-plays. The coach has always been something of a cup specialist, lifting the Nedbank Cup and MTN8 with Chiefs and then winning back-to-back Nedbank Cups with SuperSport United.

In a difficult AFCON group, the coach could again fall back on the gameplan he knows best, perhaps using the same back five and two defensive midfielders out of possession that worked well for him in the away win over Libya in March to qualify for the tournament.

The squad selected features five genuine defensive midfielders in Bongani Zungu, Hlompho Kekana, Dean Furman, Kamohelo Mokotjo and Tiyani Mabunda, perhaps showing that the side will not look to dominate possession in the engine room, but rather

keeps things tight and look for fast breaks using Percy Tau’s pace or the movement of Lebo Mothiba.

The coach has also spoken about the Plan B that target man Lars Veldwijk brings, allowing a direct style of play if needed. It is not expected to be free-flowing football from Bafana Bafana in Egypt but clean sheets could be a strong base to progress to the knockout stages and perhaps cause an upset or two, reports Soccer Laduma.
