fter purchasing groceries worth R1350.00, at Checkers in Canal Walk Century City, a Dunoon woman claims she was detained for over three hours for a packet of peanuts worth about R15 that was not scanned when she was making payments for the rest of the groceries. She claimed that about eight security guards interrogated her in a security control room to establish why she didn’t pay for the packet of peanuts. The woman Nozwakazi Mlindi, 29, begged the guards to call the SAPS so as they could open a case of shoplifting if there was evidence that she was a thief.

T h e guards, she said did not budge on her request to call the SAPS. Instead, she claimed they detained her further in the security control room! She said they later told her to pay for the packet of peanuts perceived to have been stolen but even after paying for it the guards didn’t give the peanuts to her.

Thugs wanted Milnerton police are looking for your help to bust these thugs depicted in the identikits. The suspect (far right) took advantage of a woman who was walking along Bosmansdam Road, Milnerton. And when she was waiting at a traffic right to turn green at the corner of Bosmansdam Road and Montague Drive the suspect who was driving a black BMW stopped his vehicle and armed with fire arm pounced on her demanding her hand-bag, jewellery and cash. Fearing for her safety the woman obliged and handed over the items. The suspect got back into his vehicle and sped off. A case of Armed Robbery was opened and is still under investigation by the serious and violent crime unit at Milnerton SAPS. efore getting to Checkers to buy the groceries she first bought various items at different stores which the guards inspected all the items and checked the invoices to verify if they matched with the items after which they were convinced that they were not stolen. During all her detention her two children aged five and 15 were waiting for their mother in her car at the malls parking lot.

“They photographed me. I asked why they are taking my pictures of me… are you calling me a thief. I’d like to know what they did with my pictures. I asked them to check CCTV footage in the store to see if I stole, they refused,” said Mlindi. After her ordeal, she explained to her children what took her so long to come to them. “My children were traumatised cause it was my payday and every time on my pad day I take them along for shopping,” she said.

She added that she had wanted to return all her groceries in protest but unfortunately the store was closed and the guards even prevented her to speak to the shops’s manager, she claimed. “They just took advantage of me,” she said. When approached for comment Shoprite Checkers Corporate Communications Manager Sarita Van Wyk said Checkers’ initial investigation into the matter revealed information that differed from the version that Mlindi, provided to this

reporter. “An incident involving Ms Mlindi did occur, but our information differs from what she told you (the reporter),” said Van Wyk. She said during the incident on Wednesday, November 25, the security procedures followed were in accordance with the supermarket retail chain policy as well as that of Canal Walk, whose security staff took charge of the matter after she was handed over to their care. “The supermarket chain has an obligation to institute measures

to curtail losses due to shoplifting. These cases are, however, to be treated sensitively and with the necessary respect towards the customer involved. Should it be found that these procedures were not properly actioned, the matter will be addressed accordingly,” said Van Wyk. In the meantime Mlindi said she will seek legal redress on the matter.

fter working for 11 years as a constable, 40 year old Siphiwo Koki was finally promoted to the rank of sergeant —the second most junior rank in the police service. The cop at Table View Police

Station, who lives in Litha Park, Khayelitsha was one of six constables in Milnerton Police Cluster who were promoted. Koki was at a loss for words when Brigadier Aneequa Jordaan replaced the constable epaulette on his police shirt with that of a sergeant on Friday on December 4.

“I feel great. Promotion boosts morale in the work environment. I’m prepared for the challenge that come with the sergeant rank,” said Koki. Unick Fourie, 34, who is based at Atlantis Police Station, said the promotion took too long to come his way. Nonetheless, he said he was ex-

cited. Brigadier Jordaan announced the promotions at Atlantis Police Station. She urged lower ranked police offices to be determined and said if they dreamt of becoming senior police officers they should work towards their dream. She also announced the success of the police in combating crime in the cluster. From the reporting period between April and November the cluster had arrested 1560 suspects for contact crimes including murder, rape, sexual assault, assault causing grievous bodily harm, common assault, common robbery, robbery with other weapon, and sexual offences. A total of 3461 suspects were arrested for drug dealing and the cluster recovered 111 vehicles stolen from other policing clusters in the province. Other notable arrests were made on drunk driving, 378; theft out of motor vehicle, 85; liquor related, 3716; possession of suspected stolen property,

347; burglaries, 379; theft from motor vehicle, 37 among others. On aggravated crimes such as murder, assault causing grievous bodily harm and robberies thugs committed these crimes mostly on Friday, Saturday and Wednesday in the mornings from 01:00 – 04:00am and evenings from 18:00 – 22:00 and instrument commonly used by the thugs were bottle necks, firearms and knives. She provided safety tips to the public to be aware of their surroundings, and to avoid taking short cuts, don’t walk and talk on cellphones, walk in groups, don’t walk alone in the dark. Avoid isolated ATM’s late at night, report suspicious persons at ATM’s, never accept assistance from strangers ensure your own card is returned after your transaction, be careful of people following you afterwards, don’t count your cash in front of the ATM. “This festive season we are going to be hard. We are going to have high density operations,” she warned thugs.

SMS with their 13-digit identity number followed by a space and their surname to 44108 and receive a reply on the status of their application. This, Van Minnen said is another example of how the City is using technology to deliver services to some of its most vulnerable residents. “The City encourages qualifying applicants to make use of the new SMS service as well as the online database as it is a convenient and safe way to access this City service – includ-

ing with a smartphone,” said Van Minnen. She said residents who did not have access to a smartphone are encouraged to make use of the City’s free SmartCape internet access at libraries, while elderly residents can be helped by their children and grandchildren to access the database online without having to face the challenges of mobility and travel to housing offices. “We need residents to find out whether they qualify for a subsidised housing opportunity

and to work with us by taking responsibility for what is required of them. If they are already registered, they should please make sure that their personal details are updated regularly otherwise it is difficult to get hold of them should a housing opportunity arise,” she told Isolabantu. Surf project rising with tides

The Foundation is a registered non-profit organization that works to enrich, educate, and empower residents living in various townships and informal settlements situated in the greater Table View and Milner-

Sergio Dreyer a general manager at the Foundation said they ran numerous initiatives including educational assistance in schools, skills development programs, and sport programs to encourage healthy past times for the youth in the kasi’s. Dreyer said one of the sport programs that has grown rapidly and is highly successful is the surf project. He said one of the surfers trained by the organisation was spotlighted in a short documentary that depicted his life

and ambition to surf. The film, entitled Paul was narrated by legendary surfer Robby Naish and directed by Victor van Vloten and Robert van Wingerden. The film has premiered in several film festivals around the world and received international acclaim in Denmark, winning the “Best Short Film” award at the Danish Adventure Film Festival. In Mnzasi it was premiered for the first time at the Wavescape Surf Film Festival in Cape Town on Friday, December 11.

“On Wednesday, December 9, 2015, Save was able to prescreen the documentary alongside volunteers and supporters, as well as Paul and his friends. Save is extremely excited by all of the attention that the talented youths we support are receiving, and look forward to developing more platforms within the community for them to showcase their skills,” said Dreyer. He said in the previous two years, some of the surf participants have qualified for the Billabong Groms Games in Port Elizabeth—a four —day surf

competition for junior teams from various areas of South Africa. He said last year the foundation had the opportunity to bring two young surfers from Dunoon to compete in the games, including the first girl surf participant to qualify for the competition. He said the surf project is one of the Foundation’s most popular programs among both volunteers and participants. “Volunteers work with enthusiasm to teach the children how to surf-and the community has taken notice,” He said. “The organisation credits its hardworking staff, volunteers, and generous supporters for the ability to positively impact the lives of these very deserving children and the surrounding communities,” he said.
