fter quarrelling with her boyfriend, a Dunoon teenage girl decided to go home. But she didn’t reach home. The 19-year-old was instead abducted by three young men who allegedly took turns to rape her the whole night! Confirming the incident,

Milnerton Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Daphne O’Reilly told Isolabantu that the incident happened on Friday, July 15 at 22:00 in Dunoon Siyahlala squatter camp. “It is alleged that the victim was with her boyfriend on Friday, July 15 at 22:00. The victim and her boyfriend had a fight and she decided to go home. On her way home she met three males who

demanded her cell phone. All three suspects raped her,” said O’Reilly. The squatter camp community leader Sibongile Mbondlela said the victim reported to community leaders that “four men” took turns to rape her. Mbondlela said the victim told leaders that on her way home she met two knife-wielding men who ambushed her; demanding her smartphone.

“They dragged her to an open field near Silverleaf Primary School behind shipping containers. They whistled to their friends who joined them. They all took turns raping her,” said Mbondlela. After raping her in the open field, the men took her to their shack in Siyahlala squatter camp where they allegedly continued raping her. Mbondlela said the shack they

took her to is situated near one of the alleged rapist’s mother. “One of the alleged rapist’s mother called the name of her son, asking for him as he usually escorted her early mornings to the taxi rank to board a taxi to work, and questioned why he wasn’t awake. ...continued on page 4

TVET MONTH

he Ministry of Higher Education and Training has declared the month of August as the “TVET College Month”. This has become an annual event. The purpose of TVET College Month, hosted between 1- 30 August 2016, is to introduce the college programmes and career pathways to the community. We would like to give young people from our communities the opportunity to acquire information about career paths and programmes offered in colleges and also to test their aptitude, interests and skills. The official theme for the TVET College and assessment month is: “Celebrating Technical and Vocational Education and Training with College Communities”. Our programme includes

hosting a Career Guidance Day at campus, an Exhibition showcasing the programmes offered on campus to the local community, conducting placement and assessment tests, engaging Life Orientation teachers and community organisations. Our Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) such as the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA) will also be in attendance to assist with providing career guidance. Over the month of August a range of activities are planned where guests will be able to get a look and feel of a college environment. We look forward to seeing you at one of our campuses. Disgruntled residents sprinkle muthi in principals office

o get rid of a local primary school principal, some disgruntled residents allegedly sprinkled Muthi on his office chair to bewitch him. This took place because the six

month teaching contracts of some educators at Dunoon’s Silverleaf Primary School were not renewed by the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED). The disgruntled residents were under the impression that the principal fired the educators.

A source, who alerted the principle, was at the school at the time that the residents stormed the office and allegedly sprinkled muthi on his chair. The principal who opted for his name to be withheld told Isolabantu that he was no longer using his office chair for fear of being bewitched. “I have since switched the chair. They don’t want me as school principal. They’re alleging that I fired four educators and that I’m employing foreigners and they are accusing me of nepotism,” he said. He said the educators’ contracts came to an end and the WCED did not renew them. He said the department’s decision followed from Curriculum Advisors who assessed the educators’ work and found that they did not do the required amount of tuition. The Schools Governing Body said when their children were asked what they had learnt at school they said the educators in

The educators’ incompetence forced the WCED to postpone grade 6 and 7 June exams as pupils were not ready. WCED Director of Communications Paddy Attwell told Isolabantu that the educators’ contracts expired on June 30th. He said the educators had an opportunity to re-apply. “The department has to give priority to teachers with qualifications to teach Grades 4 to 7, and with

knowledge of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) curriculum,” said Attwell He said his department’s subject advisors found various shortcomings in the approach of the educators. “The district advised the school that the learners were not ready for the June exams and should write the exams in the first three weeks of the third term. They needed more tuition. The district discussed a catch-up programme with the school management team. Subject advisors will monitor progress,” said Attwell. Asked why the department did not pick up the educators’ incompetency early enough, Attwell said tensions in the community initially made it unsafe for our subject advisors to visit the school. “Schooling has returned to normal, and district officials are working with the school to ensure that learners catchup with work lost,” he said.

Brand new school to transform learning experience WILLIAM CHITENDA

he brand new, stateof-the-art, R47 million Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo Park, Milnerton, looks set for completion and ready for pupils to move into at the beginning of the 2017 school year. Construction is slated for completion in December 2016. The school will boast 33 classrooms; 8 specialist classrooms; 4 science laboratories; ablution and storage facilities; an administration block; a computer room; school hall; a media centre;

and a dedicated sports field. Education MEC Debbie Schafer’s spokesperson Jessica Shelver said: “While construction has been underway, the learners have been accommodated at a temporary school site under the very capable leadership of their Principal, Kuselwa Nopote.” Shelver said under the leadership of Nopote and with the assistance of the Rabie Foundation, the schools National Senior Certificate (NSC) results have more than doubled from 43.9% in 2009 to 90.6%. Napote told Isolabantu that she wished that construction

of the new school could be completed as soon as possible. “We do not have offices here (at the temporary school accommodation) there is no hall or safe room to keep grade 12 question papers. We have to keep the question papers elsewhere. In summer it becomes very hot in the classrooms and that affects learner concentration,” she said. Grade 12 student Lubabalo Koni agrees with his principal saying that the current temporary learning accommodation is not conducive for teaching and learning.

“There are so many things affecting our learning, for example, when it is learning time it becomes so noisy in the classrooms that we can’t hear,” said Koni. Teacher Thandiswa Diko said: “It is so difficult to teach here when it is raining because it is noisy and you have to speak louder so that the students can hear and that takes your energy.” She said educators and pupils are looking forward to the new school as it will transform their learning experience. Shelver said construction of the school has seen the creation

of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities, including the vital skills training component. She said a total of R6 million is expected to go towards targeted contractor businesses, R5 million to suppliers and manufacturers, and R5 million to targeted local labour, which has seen 111 local labourers getting employment. “We are confident that the school will continue to be an institution of excellence, and that their transformed environment will encourage them to reach even higher,” she said.

UKELWA Siyira lives in a one roomed rickety shack in Dunoon’s Siyahlala squatter camp. At the back of her shack is a small space that she wants to use for subsistence gardening to grow essential survival crops. Earlier this month, Siyira was among 15 Dunoon residents who received a donation of gardening tools such as a wheelbarrow, spade, bags of compost and vegetable seeds. The donation was made by National Development Agency (NDA), Surplus People Project and the Dunoon Masicedisane Advice Centre. “I have space behind my shack. I want to grow vegetables to feed my family and to sell some to make money to buy meat and clothes,” said Siyira. About 400 families at the squatter camp use two communal taps and the water pressure is very low. People have to queue for water, but Bukelwa said she is prepared to wake up very in the morning to fetch water for her vegetable garden. “I am glad because I’ll be the first

person in the squatter camp to grow vegetables behind my shack.” Pensioner Grolia Jentu (68) said she had stopped buying vegetables since she started a vegetable garden behind her RDP house three years ago. She added that the donation will help her to produce more vegetables. Mzukisi Zele of Surplus People Project said: “ We were approached by the agency to manage funds for the gardening tools and facilitate the project in collaboration with Dunoon Masincedisane Advice Centre.” “Similar gardening projects they have implemented in Atlantis and Porterville on the West Coast are bearing fruit and was optimistic the Dunoon project will bear fruit as well. “We are promoting organic methods of gardening opposed to conventional. We don’t use pesticides or chemical fertiliser,” said Zele. Dunoon Masincendisane Advice Centre secretary Lennox James said the beneficiaries of the project included pensioners and the youth. “The tools are worth R18 000.00. We just want them to be self reliant and produce their own food and eat healthily,” he said.

Pugilists slug it out for Madiba

A technical glitch regarding boxer registration led to the fight card being altered just before the weigh-in and a few open boxing bouts were added to spice up the proceedings. Duma Boxing Promotions (DBP) matchmaker Mzoli Tempi explained

that five boxers were yet to be approved by the national regulator and that led to the alteration of the bill. “Despite that we managed to stage an exciting tournament. We hired DJ Plasha of Ndingalwa Ndibe Bomvu fame and he kept the crowds excited,” said Tempi. Representatives from sponsoring companies like Vodacom, Ntabethemba Fishing, Bato Star Holdings, Caltex Spine Road, Ekasi,

Khaltshaglass, Sasko, Silulo and the City of Cape Town nodded in appreciation as young and talented boxers showed skill and class. Bato Star Holdings chairman Patrick Mngxunyeni said it was the third year that they have supported this tournament. “We believe that sports makes a difference and celebrating Madiba’s contribution via sport make a lot of sense to us,” said Mngxunyeni.

Ntabethemba Fishing’s Prayer Mthandazo Mtintsilana said they were also excited to be part of this year’s celebration. “We have seen a lot talent here and we need more companies to support sports in the townships,” he said. DBP boss Duma Nogaga said it was important to stage this tournament because it “celebrated an icon”. “When we started, it was to simply celebrate Madiba through
