New Dunoon school enrolling pupils

T

HE 2016 school academic year begun on January 13 in Mzansi.

In Dunoon township, several parents seeking to enrol their children at two schools; Sophakama Primary and Dunoon Primary were turned away because the schools are full to capacity and have had a long waiting list.

However, one school Silverleaf Primary is accommodating all new enrolments, much to the excitement of the parents.

Silverleaf is a temporary name for the school housed in mobile classrooms previously used as a temporary shelter for Sophakama Primary School pupils when the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) was building a state of the art, now complete multimillion rand primary school.

When construction of the modern school was complete the mobile classrooms became empty and the WCED planned to remove and use them elsewhere needed but parents in protest prevented the move as the only available schools in the area were full to capacity with most children being left out in the 2015 school academic year.

The parents and volunteer teachers started teaching their children in the mobile classrooms forcing the department to officially open the school and employed qualified teachers.

On January 13 the school was absorbing most children enrolling in Grade 1 to 7, who could have, otherwise, been left out in the 2016 school academic year, should the WCED succeeded

enrolled here. At the other two schools (Sophakama Primary and Dunoon Primary) I was told its totally full,” she said.

Also excited was Nokhanyo Mzuku, 42, a mom of five children who was there to enrol her six-years-old daughter Mbali Mzuku.

“We (parents) are happy cause we have a place to enrol our children ,” said Mzuku.

“I’m happy that my niece will be

Colyn said they expected 500 pupils who registered last year in August but only 242 pitched.

“Many of the pupils that registered last year very few arrived.

Some parents that did not register last year arrived. We have 36 new pupils that arrived that we didn’t know of…we are accommodating them,” said Brand.

Colyn confirmed that Sophakama Primary and Dunoon Primary are already fully subscribed as such are unable to accommodate any new pupils.

The school’s acting principal Phillip Mbalula said the first day was hectic.

“Parents are bringing underaged children. They are bringing four-year-olds which is ridiculous,” said Mbalula.

Education MEC Debbie Schaffer said: “Parents who are having difficulties enrolling their child, or have failed to enrol their child should approach the local district office as soon as possible, for assistance with finding a place at a school.”

N orphaned teen from Mdantsane squatter camp in the rural Eastern Cape proved it is possible to beat the most difficult odds to succeed.

After the death of both parents, 17-year-old Sinoxolo Cotyi migrated to Cape Town to stay with his aunt who lives in squalor at Kwa 5 squatter camp adjacent to Dunoon township near Milnerton.

With his aunt working as a domestic worker in Table View, Cotyi surmounted extreme poverty conditions beating all odds against him emerging one of the best in Mzansi’s 2015 matric exams scooping seven distinctions!

His aunt never got to apply for foster care child support grant provided for him with her meagre domestic earnings.

“Living in squalid conditions

in a squatter camp… the poverty in the area… that is seriously hard to live was my driving force to work hard in school,” said Cotyi.

He had to overcome public transport nightmares to get to school at Sinenjongo High in Joe Slovo Park township 10-kilometres away from Kwa 5 squatter camp.

“Taxi bosses strike would impact me to go to school. I would miss classes depending on the duration of the strike. Sometimes taxis would get stuck in traffic during peak hour and I would get to school late. You really had to wake up very early to make for school,” he said.

He said because the shacks made of zinc were closely together it made it difficult to study at home as even when neighbours quarrelled it would seem as if they were quarrelling right inside his home.

Shebeens were also all over the place playing loud music 24-hours making it difficult for

“I want to give my aunt and brother standard living conditions as opposed to what we have now,” he said.

School Principal at Sinenjongo High Khuselwa Nopote said her school was grateful Sinoxolo outstanding performance.

“He (Sinoxolo) has put our school on the map,” said Nopote.

She said she was also grateful to her teachers and parents.

“To get a learner get seven distinctions its a lot of work on the teacher they sacrifice their time after normal workings hours and on weekends when they are supposed to spend time with their families,” she said.

She said she was grateful that she was making a difference in a dysfunctional township and

sending pupils to universities.

“Since 2010 when I came to Sinejongo I have ensure that a black child is given an opportunity to go to university. Some of learners are doing third year and second year at universities some have already graduated,” she boasted.

He thanked study groups established at the school saying they were the reason he achieved seven distinctions securing him a bursary and a place to study a BSc degree in forensic science at the prestigious University of Cape Town.

“When I heard about my results (matric) I was very shocked. I expected to get distinctions my initial goal was to get atleast five distinctions. When I got seven distinctions I was so shocked and happy. Even if I wanted it I didn’t expect it. I was so overwhelmed… I said oh my world!” he said.

He advised other poverty stricken youths to emulate his hard working spirit and nothing was unconquerable.

Asanda beat odds to achieve success

A

sanda Magoda (18) from Makhaza in Khayelitsha, Cape Town used to go to school on empty stomach.

But that didn’t stand in her way of achieving her dreams, instead it made her to work even harder. On January 12, the 18-year-old former Centre of Science and Technology matric pupil was awarded by the Western Cape provincial government for her outstanding work in her year of matric.

The award ceremony was held at Premier Helen Zille’s home in Cape Town on January 12.

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga was among the delegates who attended the award ceremony of 50 top matric achievers in 2015.

Asanda told Isolabantu she was excited about her achievement.

“I am happy that my hard work has paid off.”

She added: “There were challenges but I had to do everything I can to pass. I knew that I was the one who can get my family out of poverty and I could only do that by working extra hard. I had to come from school and help with house chores. I couldn’t study during the day because of the noise outside; I had to wait for everyone to sleep so I can be able to study in peace.”

“My father died three years ago and my mum works as a domestic worker and doesn’t make a lot of money. That is one of the things that motivated me to study harder.”

She has since been offered a bursary to study medicine at Wits University.

She leaves the mother city at the end of the month.

Asanda’s mum, Nomfundo Magoda (47) said she was proud of her daughter.

“I am very proud of her, I wasn’t expecting this at all from her.

She’s a very quiet person and don’t like to talk much. Even when she went to school with an empty stomach, she kept on pushing and dint let her situation affect her studies.”

Motshekga congratulated the Western Cape province for its achievement.

“I would like to say a very good job well done to the province.

I appreciate the work you are doing, not only for the province but for the whole nation.

I would really love to associate myself with success. The Western Cape province has set out a bench mark for all of us.”

Khayelitsha’s Makhaza resident is one of 2015 matric top achiever she got a bursary to study Medicine at Wits University.

Silulo donates mattresses to christmas shack fire victims

total of 24 people were left devastated after a fire completely destroyed their homes in Kwa 5 Squatter Camp on Christmas day.

“We celebrated christmas nicely. I was in Dunoon had lunch

with family. When I came back I found my shack in flames,” said Fundiswa Sonqayi, 37.

The mother of three children aged four 11 and 15, lost all her treasured possessions in the devastating shack blaze.

Fikile Magoso, 28, a mother of three children also lost everything.

“I’m still struggling. Dont have

food. Dont have money to go and apply for another Id,” said Magoso.

Now struggling to rebuild their lives from a scratch the fire victims were excited on Tuesday, January 19 when Silulo Ulutho Technologies an accredited computer training academy, donated mattresses to all the fire victims.

The Acadamey’s director Luvuyo Rani said it was overwhelming to seeing the fire victims’ excitement after their donation.

“We will increase our interaction with corporate companies to increase our help in communities,” said Luvuyo.

Rani said Silulo approached companies to fund students

school fees at the academy and 10 students have benefited from the bursary.

“The company was happy with the performance of the students so they donated mattresses to us to donate to a kasi of our choice so we chose Kwa 5,” he said.

2015 Africa Code Week targeted 200 pupils but got 800 and targeted 150 teachers and got 300 all in less than one week!

“Its just goes to show that there is hunger for coding skills. We could have taken more but we did not have the capacity,” said Cleverdon.

She said the 2016 Africa Code Week will take place from October 15 to the 23rd.

“We should really have youth ambassadors because peer to peer relationships are powerful and we want lots of coding activists out there because it is an incredible 2016 skill,” she said.

Esihle’s mother Natasha was lost for words.

“I’m excited. With Esihle…it was bound to happen soon or later. She has been a shining star since pre school days,” said Natasha.

CAPE TOWN teenager’s enthusiasm in learning and embracing soft ware coding, earned her a prestigious award, becoming the first Africa Code Week Youth Ambassador on the African continent!

The 13-year-old girl from

Dunoon township near Milnerton Esihle Yokwana, who is in grade 8 at Bloubergrant High School in Bloubergstrand was presented with her award and prize—a brand new computer with access to the internet on Tuesday, January 19 after participating in 2015 Africa Code Week which run in June last year.

Africa Code Week is a joint initiative by Systems Applications and Products (SAP) and the Cape Town Science Centre.

SAP which boasts that it is a leading market leader in enterprise application soft ware at the centre of business and technology revolution is a major sponsor of the Cape Town Science Centre having contributed over

The City of Cape Town announced that it is issuing a tender for the procurement of electric buses for the MyCiTi service.

Thus, Herron said a tender for the procurement of a fleet of 12-metre electric buses is due to be advertised by the first

He said the City will be the first municipality in the country to benefit from the latest alternative fuel technology and the first in Africa to use electric buses for public transport, if

He said the City will also save operational costs for running electric buses as they are significantly lower not only in terms of fuel, but also in relation to maintenance as they have fewer parts to service.

This tender specifies that the electric buses should be able to travel at least 250 km in traffic before the batteries need recharging.

Apart from the buses, the successful bidder will also have to provide the City with the charging stations for the buses and the necessary training for the bus drivers and mechanical engineers.
