– W.E.B. Du Bois As we celebrate our 15-year anniversary at d-mars.com, I reflect on the mission we had when we first began: to be the link between businesses and the community. Fifteen years later, we are still on the right course. The journey has been long and difficult at times, but the community has stood by us. d-mars.com is not just a family business, but a business for the African American community. African Americans weren’t always dealt the same hand as everybody else, but have proven themselves to be some of the best in the business world.

My hope is that in our community, unity becomes the priority again. We should always celebrate, inspire, and lift each other up. We truly are our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper. I hope when people look at this book, they understand its importance. This directory has some of the most diverse group of black business owners and professionals – from pastors and politicians to corporate and community leaders, entertainers and athletes.

It’s my goal that each year, we understand a little more and learn a little more. Deavra A. Daughtry 2014 P&E Living Legend

D

eavra A. Daughtry, President and CEO of Excellent Care Management – one of the nation’s largest personal in-home care agencies – started as a sole proprietorship, and now employs more than 700 people throughout the Greater Houston Area.

Daughtry hails from Houston and has overcome tremendous odds to emerge as one of the most influential businesswomen and philanthropists in the area. Sharing her compassion and skills, she has trained more than 10,000 healthcare employees. An innovative and diverse businesswoman and passionate philanthropist, Daughtry is the CEO of Excellent Care Management, Excel E Care Home Health Care, and Purpose to Blessing Productions; also she is the Owner and President of Platinum Results Marketing and International Décor & Events.

Daughtry is a founder extraordinaire, having formed a successful foundation–Texas Women’s Empowerment Foundation International—which has been in operation since 2002. This foundation serves as a catalyst in which families gain necessary tools toward achieving and maintaining a true sense of empowerment—being inspired to reach their personal and professional goals. In 2006, Daughtry developed the Empowerment Community Center utilizing her personal resources and invested $800,000 for construction. Through the Empowerment Center, she has impacted more than 100,000 lives, sponsoring many free seminars and workshops. Additionally, she continues to make a difference in the youth of the community through her donation of $20,000 in scholarships.

Daughtry holds a Doctor of Divinity and Doctor of Humanity from Logos Christian College and graduate schools. She serves on several local, national, and international boards of directors. She has published three books, with a bestseller, “Purpose 14

W

illiam A. Lawson is Pastor Emeritus of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. He retired in 2004.

Lawson was born in St. Louis, Mo., and reared by Walter and Clarisse Lawson Cade in Kansas City, Kan., where he graduated from Sumner High School in 1946.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Tennessee A&I State University in Nashville in 1950. He returned to Kansas City to attend Central Baptist Theological Seminary, which conferred upon Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees.

Texas Southern University. He served in that position for 10 years, also becoming director of Upward Bound, a pre-college program for high school students on the TSU campus. During his years at TSU, a number of residents of the neighborhood persuaded the Lawsons to establish a church near the university. Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church was established in their home in June of 1962. The congregation has grown to more than 12,000 members, with many outreach programs, and is much respected in the community.

Since the church was born and lived its infant years during the Civil Rights Movement, Lawson has been deeply involved in advocacy activities for African Americans, Hispanics, women, and the poor.

While in seminary, he married Audrey Hoffman Lawson of St. Louis. Lawson always works in close partnership with his wife Audrey, who worked with the Baptist Student Union at TSU, with the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church for his 42-year tenure, and now with WALIPP. Rev. Lawson will celebrate his 86th birthday in June of 2014.

She served three terms on Houston City Council, and was recently elected to the Houston Independent School District Board of Education, where she spends most of her time advocating for her district’s fair share of the city’s revenue and responding to the needs of her constituency. Adams is a native Houstonian who hails from the same streets as the legendary Barbara Jordan and Mickey Leland. The youngest of four children, Adams attended Texas Southern University on a basketball scholarship and earned her Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs.

Prior to being elected as the Council Member for District D, Adams pursued her passion for public service by working for a government-based transitional program for women re-entering society, and agencies such as the City of Houston Housing Authority, Harris County Mental Health and Mental Retardation Association, Solid Waste Management, and the Mayor’s Citizen’s Assistance Office. Boykins enters city council with a background as a governmental affairs consultant and public advocate. He has also served in various positions through the City of Houston. In 2008, Boykins was appointed by former Houston Mayor Bill White to serve on the Hurricane Ike Relief Fund Board, overseeing the distribution of more than $16 million in funding to the city’s most devastated areas. Boykins has also served on the Oversight Committee of ReBuild Houston – a citywide initiative aimed at renewing the city’s flooding and street infrastructure.

Through his work, Boykins has been able to help community organizations and citizens in their effort to make a difference in the world we live in today. vide Duncantell was born in Natchitoches, La., August 7, 1936. He attended school there until graduating in 1955, where he entered the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1959. Returning home after leaving the service, he soon discovered his vision of success wouldn’t be achieved there. He married a hometown girl and left for Los Angeles, Calif. However, he stopped in Houston, Texas to visit with his new wife’s brothers and has been a permanent resident ever since.

In 1974, Duncantell created and became Founder and Executive Director of the Black Heritage Society Inc., and emerged as one of the driving forces behind the renaming of a major thoroughfare to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The street ran through a predominantly African American neighborhood. Duncantell’s zeal, persistence and enthusiasm resulted in the mobilization of the community in favor of South Park Boulevard becoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. (“Daddy”) was so impressed by the Black Heritage Society’s fervent energy and gesture of respect for his deceased son that he made a personal appearance at the Street Name Change and served as the BHS first MLK Parade “Grand Marshal,” January 21, 1978. The street was christened by a citywide parade down the newly named boulevard.

Making a pact and promise to Dr. King’s father, “Daddy King,” Duncantell and the BHS has since conducted the annual MLK Parade in Houston for 35 consecutive years. Duncantell is also responsible for the most recent announcement of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Statue & Park Plaza.

Pastor Henderson’s ministry was shaped at the Tree of Life Missionary Baptist Church, Gary, Ind., under the leadership of Dr. Cato Brooks Jr. On July 30, 1995 Pastor Henderson publicly announced his call into the ministry at the age of 14.

Just seven days later, Pastor Henderson delivered his first sermon entitled, “Faith, where is yours?” After graduating from high school in East Chicago, Ind. (1999), Pastor Henderson was awarded a full basketball scholarship to Indiana UniversityPurdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW).

Beginning with less than 100 members in 1991, membership at The Fountain of Praise now exceeds 22,000 lives touched over the course of 23 years.

Pastor Wright earned a Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies and Business Marketing from Martin Center University in Indianapolis, Ind. He is a certified developer of faithbased community development programs through Harvard University’s Summer Leadership Institute Program for Economic Development. In 2008 and again in 2012, he was invited to present at the Oxford Round Table at the University of Oxford in England. His 2008 presentation, “Hip Hop and The Church: A Clash Between Religion and Secularism – An Opportunity to Bridge the Gap?” sparked thought-provoking discussion among religious leaders from across the globe and Pastor Wright has received an invitation to join the Round Table in subsequent years following.

EDUCATOR Davis received his B.A. from Washington College in 1995, and returned home to Houston to mentor youth in after school and sports programs. He received his state teaching certification from Houston’s University of St. Thomas. Davis later obtained a Master’s in Education Administration from Prairie View A&M University.

ENTREPRENEUR In 2003, after the tragic murder of his father, Davis made the decision to unite with his two older brothers at the familyowned restaurant, the Breakfast Klub and The Reggae Hut – two local favorites.

arcus Davis is the Chief Steward of tbkHoldings, Inc., which is the parent company of the breakfast klub and Reggae Hut Café. The concept for the breakfast klub was born after Davis, a native Houstonian, recognized a void in the market for a unique breakfast restaurant serving signature items in a soulful, relaxed community environment.

He chose two of his favorite dishes from opposite ends of the country – “Katfish & Grits” from the East Coast and “Wings & Waffles” from the West Coast. The rest is history.

Since opening in September of 2001, the breakfast klub has become a top tourist attraction, as well as the local favorite breakfast spot, lining up droves of cheerful patrons on a daily basis. It consistently receives rave reviews, including recognition as the best breakfast in the country by “Good Morning America,” USA Today, Esquire Magazine, and Forbes Magazine.

Locally, the breakfast klub is touted by the Houston Press as the 2011 Readers Choice for best breakfast, winner of the 2011 My Table Culinary Award for favorite breakfast, and Best Of Citysearch 2011 winner in the breakfast category.

William I. “Billy” Prince, Jr.

illiam I. Prince, Jr., known to most people as “Billy Prince, Jr.,” is one of the few native Houstonians who can recall 60-plus years of progressive history in our great city. Prince was born October 26, 1944 and is the eldest son and the second of five children born to the late William I. (Bill) Prince, Sr. and Mrs. Gladys Prince. He has been married to his wife Priscilla for 22 years and has two sons.

One of his lifelong passions is organizing people and events for the good of helping all those in need, and educating others regardless of their culture and/or age.

Following this passion has led him to involvement with community organizations to promote a positive climate for change while continuing to preserve the history of our great city. His passion to serve came early as he watched his dad serve as a proud and long-term member/participant of the 9th and 10th Horse Calvary Association, an Official Army Unit Association.

His dad also served as national President of The Buffalo Soldiers Organization from 1989-1991, which instilled a lasting and committed interest in his son and namesake Billy, to desire to continue a legacy dedicated to contributing, promoting, and preserving the history and tradition set forth by African American Soldiers from the Revolutionary War days to present day. Prince and his younger brothers are also honorable contributors of a historical artifact painting from his dad’s collection attributable to the memories of the Buffalo Soldier days and currently displayed at Houston’s Buffalo Soldier’s Museum.

Prince graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1962. In 1970, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served for two years as a Combat Engineer. Following an honorable discharge as E-5 Sergeant in 1972, he joined The City of Houston’s Department of Public Works, Street Repair. In 1976, Prince joined Rapid Transit Authority, now known as The

Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO), where he was employed as a Bus Operator for 31 years. During his tenure at METRO, Prince was responsible for initiating the organization and setup of the Employees’ Organization with the company.

He was also active with the Transport Workers Union of America, Local 260 representing the hourly employees with METRO. At age 62 in 2007, Prince retired from METRO but did not allow his retirement to interrupt his active involvement in various community organizations.

Staying true to his passion, Prince’s objective is to utilize his time by continuing to help improve working conditions for unionized workers of America and the livelihood of the future generations to come.

Although he retired from the bus seat, he did not retire from life. He continued fulfilling his passion and his mission in life by finding other seats that welcomed his enthusiastic contributions and participation.

Judson Robinson, III

2014 P&E Community Hero

Position 5 and took the seat in January of 1991. Houston’s municipal government went through a major overhaul in 1993 in which term limits were approved by voter referendum. This forced Robinson and others elected in 1991 to serve no more than three terms as an elected official. Robinson’s leadership ability earned him the title of Vice Mayor Pro Tem while on Council, as he chaired four council committees and served on six others. Robinson chaired and founded the City of Houston’s Committee on Business and Tourism which found ways to revitalize Houston’s “Midtown.” He also chaired the Redevelopment and Revitalization Committee, which is responsible for the disbursement and monitoring of federal dollars for the betterment of local communities. Under his leadership, the Hilton America’s Convention Center Hotel project was awarded and built, and the City’s first Grand Prix Auto Race was initiated. Both of these committees were able to surpass their objectives in ways never before accomplished in the City of Houston. The increased number of low-income housing units and downtown redevelopment is still expanding over 20 years since his leaving the elected office.

Robinson continues involvement with nonprofit organizations including Menninger Clinic Board, St. Mary’s Parish Council and the Uptown Redevelopment Authority.

ernard Freeman, better known by his stage name “Bun B,” is an American rapper, songwriter and philanthropist who rose to fame in the influential rap duo UGK. Hailing from Port Arthur, Texas, UGK signed with Jive Records and with 1992's LP “Too Hard to Swallow” began a series of Southern compositions that would go on to produce some of the industry’s most influential and classic tracks.

Bun B has also been featured on albums with several other notable artists. His most notable guest appearances were on the Jay- Z hit single “Big Pimpin” and Beyonce’s chart-topper “Check On It.” After several increasingly successful albums as a duo, Bun B embarked on a solo career in 2005.

The rapper and songwriter’s debut album, Trill, opened at #6 on the Billboard Hot 200, and also peaked at #1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-hop Album chart and was certified gold for selling over 500,000 copies. Bun B and UGK group mate, Pimp C, reunited once more in 2007 to release the self-titled double album Underground Kingz. The album debuted #1 on the Billboard 200 in its first week.

Tragedy struck in early 2008 when Pimp C died suddenly, leaving Bun B to return to a solo career. His second solo album, II Trill, arrived that same year. In 2009, he would release another chart-topper, UGK’s final album with Jive Records, entitled UGK 4 Life. The album debuted at #5 on the Billboard Hot 200 and #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-hop Album chart, proving the group’s staying power. aptain Paul J. Matthews has been researching military history and collecting military artifacts and memorabilia for more than 30 years prior to his founding of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. This is the only museum in the United States that chronicles the entire African American military experience from the Revolutionary War to the Persian Gulf War. The primary objectives of the museum are to preserve, promote and perpetuate the honor and legacy of the brave men and women who fought, bled and died in defense of America. Currently, more than 60% of the museum’s collection and exhibits have been donated from his private collection.

As a 25-year member of the 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association, Matthews is a former president of the Greater Houston Chapter and historian and public relations officer for the national association.

Matthews received a B.S. in Biology from Prairie View A&M University. He served two years active duty and four years reserve duty in the United States Army, wherein he received a Bronze Star Medal,

eric Muhammad believes that man is given power for one reason; and that is to serve others. Muhammad is an accomplished Houstonbased Activist/Organizer who addresses issues on Social Justice, Black Male Development, Police Brutality, Racial Inequality and other critical topics.

Muhammad prides himself in being an “on the ground watchman” of Freedom, Justice and Equality for the Black community and other poor, underserved, disenfranchised communities, as well. A native Houstonian, Muhammad grew up on the rough and tumble streets of Northeast Houston. At the age of 11, his father died and his mother struggled with an addiction to drugs that she, later in life, overcame. Muhammad was raised in an environment where drugs, gang violence, prostitution, police brutality and other “social cancers” were prominent. This is important to know, because it verifies that Muhammad addresses these issues based on vast knowledge and personal experience. Like countless Black men who came before him, he changed his life through his studies as a member of the Nation of Islam.

Muhammad hosts an annual "Smart'n Up" Black Male Summit that deals with the unique issues that Black men and boys face in society. In 2009, he independently produced and starred in a critically acclaimed documentary called "Raising Boys: Tips for Single Moms" that addressed the plight of Black women raising sons in the absence of a father.

He recently launched a Houston-based Black Male Initiative called Project FORWARD that focuses on stopping Inner-City Violence and creating Economic Development. ommissioner Michael Shane Sinegal, aka “Coach, is a native of Port Arthur, Texas and a proud product of Port Arthur Independent School District. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, he went on to obtain a Journeyman Carpenter Certification from the Sabine Area Carpenter Apprenticeship Program, a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, a Texas Teaching Certification (Lifetime) also from Lamar University, and he has completed 18 of 36 hours at Prairie View A&M University toward a Master of Arts in Education.

Commissioner Sinegal has been extremely active in the Port Arthur community as an educator, council member, and as a member of a variety of boards and commissions. He began his teaching career in Port Arthur Independent School District in 1990 where he taught for 18 years, also serving as a head football coach for the Memorial 9th Grade Campus, interim head football coach for Memorial High School, and interim transportation coordinator for the Port Arthur Independent School District.

For three terms, Commissioner Sinegal represented the citizens of Port Arthur as a member of the City Council, serving one term as Mayor Pro-tem. He currently serves as Precinct 3 Commissioner on the Jefferson County Commissioners Court, the first African American to hold that seat.

As Commissioner, he has held an annual community health fair mimicking Tom Joyner’s “Take Yourself and a Loved One to the Doctor Day,” which has served more than 2,000 plus for preventive screenings such as diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, HIV/AIDS, prostate, eye exams, etc.

Many who enroll have gotten a rough start in life, and IWA – under the leadership of Horn – provides them an opportunity to gain higher education in a profitable industry. The percentage of African Americans in the welding industry is low, but the demand is high. There are plans for future expansion, including locations in Beaumont, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi.

Horn is a dedicated professional with more than 20 years training experience in the welding industry. Perry earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Prairie View A&M University in 1978. r. Reagan Flowers began her educational career as a high school science teacher, and since that experience, remained dedicated to her calling as a leader in academia. During her tenure at Jack Yates High School, Dr. Flowers enrolled a group of some of her students in an annual national robotics competition. Those students, of mixed performance levels on campus, had no prior robotics experience nor had they been placed in such a competitive environment. Despite the initial feelings of intimidation and self-doubt, the group went on to outperform anyone’s expectations. Their performance in this competition, while encouraging, was also a very humbling one: for the first time Dr. Flowers experienced first-hand the stark 106

reality of the vast academic achievement gap between her students and their peers from other schools. This experience caused her to take up the mission of closing the academic achievement gap.

In 2002, Dr. Flowers created the nation’s first integrated STEM enrichment program for Pre-K through 12th grade. Her professional career as an educator began in some of our nation’s most challenging and promising schools. Dr. Flowers’ founding of C-STEM was in direct response to some of her best and worst experiences as a classroom science teacher, guidance counselor, dean of students, and school improvement facilitator. She coupled her years of practice and personal challenges with learning as a child with theory and action through her dissertation. For 12

Dr. Flowers founded C-STEM using her personal resources and has led the organization in unprecedented expansion of services and revenue growth. The number of children the organization has impacted is more than 80,000 and its revenue over the years has grown from $5,000 to over $3 million. Dr. Flowers’ passion for STEM education combined with her social entrepreneurial spirit, expertise in partnership development, curriculum and program design, and project management have made her the natural choice to lead in various realms of STEM education.

eginald Wayne DeVaughn, II is a young man that’s simply striving to leave his mark on the world. He is currently completing a business degree from the University of Houston while getting a head start on his personal business ventures.

Reginald, or RWayne, serves as part owner of a wireless electronics company called “Trilogyz Wireless,” as well as the CEO and Founder of R Wayne Inc. RWayne is also pursuing his career as an inspirational singer, outside of being an entrepreneur. Opening for Earnest Pugh and singly weekly at his church home, Silverlake Church, RWayne is emerging into a great talent. He has released a single on iTunes entitled “Oh Lord,” as well as his personal line of RWayneMusic Luxury T-Shirts which are available on his website. He also has teamed up with Trilogyz Wireless to design his personal line of RWayneMusic Wireless Ear Buds, which are scheduled to be available later this year. Future endeavors for RWayne include a Luxury Goods & Accessories line, for which he has already begun work.
