LaneStaffing Forms Alliance with Houston

Area Urban League to Create Jobs and Sustainability for Houston Area Families

resident and CEO of LaneStaffing Inc., Carla Lane, has pioneered one of the largest and most successful minority owned staffing companies in the U.S. southern region. Through the leadership and vision of Lane, the company has been instrumental in helping families become economically self-reliant through her forte in recruitment, training and job placement.

To house additional resources aimed at job readiness, Lane initiated a partnership with the Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) who also plays a significant role in helping individuals enter the economic and social mainstream.

LaneStaffing and HAUL solidified their union with a kickoff celebration on Mar. 7, 2013, inside HAUL’s headquarters at 1301 Texas Avenue Houston, TX 77002. More than 70 community leaders witnessed a ribbon cutting ceremony symbolizing the grand opening of “LaneStaffing @ HAUL.” The new downtown presence gives LaneStaffing greater accessibility to a broader Houston audience and supplements LaneStaffing’s North Houston site and its corporate office located at 2211 Norfolk, Suite 150, Houston, TX 77098, in addition to its offices in Dallas, Port Arthur, Beaumont and Orlando.

“The LaneStaffing and HAUL partnership creates opportunities to strengthen families,” stated Judson

W. Robinson, III, president and chief executive officer of HAUL. “The program meets people where they are. HAUL has always provided programs to support the family such as housing assistance, health and wellness resources, transportation vouchers and job-readiness training. Now, the new LaneStaffing partnership enables us to focus intentionally on placement as well as training. Our services complement each other in a more powerful way and provide our supporters with a higher level of accountability. I am delighted with the launch of LaneStaffing @ HAUL. These types of unconventional partnerships help further our mission to help families become empowered and economically secure.”

The new partnership is in line with the City of Houston’s vision of increasing the number of employed citizens.

“LaneStaffing and its vision to create jobs for our city aligns with Mayor Parker’s vision to identify ways to create job opportunities for the citizens of Houston,” said Carlecia D. Wright, director of the Mayor’s Office of Business Opportunity.

Lane’s clientele appreciates her track record for preparing individuals for the workforce and finding them viable career

The Buffalo Soldier Tradition Continues in Houston Youth 9th & 10th Horse Cavalry

T

he legacy of African Americans serving proudly in every great American war is unprecedented.

In 1866, through an act of Congress, legislation was adopted to create six all African American Army units. The units were identified as the 9th and 10th cavalry and the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st infantry regiments. The four infantry regiments were later reorganized to form the 24th and 25th infantry regiments.

These fighting men represented the first Black professional soldiers in a peacetime army. The recruits came from varied backgrounds including former slaves and veterans from service in the Civil War. The nickname buffalo soldiers began with the Cheyenne warriors in 1867. The actual Cheyenne translation was Wild Buffalo. The nickname was given out of respect for the fierce fighting ability of the 10th cavalry. Overtime, Buffalo Soldiers became a generic term for all African American soldiers.

In light of the great historic tradition of the buffalo soldier, in mid-April of 2012, Trooper Eric E. Goosby Sr. launched their first official Buffalo Soldier Horsemanship Training Program and the official home of the 9th and 10th Horse Calvary, Houston Chapter. The program is designed to teach all aspects of horsemanship with a focus on organized mounted parade drill. They strive to continue to impact the lives of veterans, disabled veterans, and disadvantaged youth throughout the Houston area. Skills and techniques taught are: Horse Grooming • • Hoof Care • Horse Nutrition • General Equine Health Care • Saddling Techniques in 5 Minutes • Saddle and Tack Cleaning

• Stall Maintenance and Horse Riding Technique • All students graduate with a certificate and horsemanship patch. As a trainer Goosby states, “I will not ask my students to do anything I would not do, following strict and mandatory safety precautions.”

E-mail Response Paralysis What Every Auto and Home Emergency Kit Should Contain

I

f you’re one of the people waiting for me to answer your e-mail, please don’t be angry. I can explain.

No, actually, I can’t explain. But I think it has something to do with the century in which I was born. I’d have done well in the days of quill and ink. In that era, while you were blotting, you had time to ponder what to say next.

In today’s e-mail e-ra, people expect a reply roughly 4.5 seconds after clicking the Send button. That’s no problem for some of the guys on my floor at work.

They can answer 120 e-mails in just under 12 minutes.

And me? Well, I delete the deletable stuff immediately, especially anything forwarded that says, “If you do not send this warning and/or message of love to your 25 closest friends, you are dirty scum not fit to walk this planet.” But when it comes to real messages demanding real answers, I ponder. I deliberate. I labor over the briefest of replies.

If you wrote me but haven’t heard back, I’ve read your message - and appreciated it greatly. I probably also clicked Reply, typed, “Hi!” and, several agonizing minutes later, clicked the button to Delete my half-written response. I quit midmessage because: (a) I couldn’t think what to say; (b) I couldn’t think how to say it; and/or (c) 3,258 other duties, including 71 more unanswered e-mails, were shouting from all directions, “You’re taking too long with that one little message! Hurry!”

Alas, the word “hurry” often does more harm than good. In some cases, it can even create E-mail Response Paralysis, also known as ERP. So here I sit, swamped with unanswered messages, trying desperately not to ERP, while my unanswered senders out there in cyberspace echo the sentiment a young upstart named Elihu expressed to a sufferer named Job. With Elihu they cry, “Behold, I waited for your words while

you pondered what to say” (Job 32:11).

My accusers are right. I’m guilty as charged: a confirmed ponderer. But may I say briefly in my own defense: Pondering may make for slower answers, but it usually makes for better ones.

In Proverbs 5:5-6, a man known for his wisdom used these words to describe the woman who “does not ponder the path of life”: “Her feet go down to death. Her ways are unstable, she does not know it.”

Not a good scenario, wouldn’t you say?

By contrast, this same wise man declared in Proverbs 15:28: “The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer.”

Now hang with me here. In the original language of the Old Testament, this word “ponder” is “hagah,” a close cousin to our own, “Ah hah!” A man named Vine who wrote a dictionary explaining such words, said, “It seems to be an onomatopoetic term, reflecting the sighing and low sounds one may make while musing.”

If we stuff all the meanings of “hagah” into that one sentence from Proverbs, it reads: The heart of the righteous moans, growls, utters, muses, mutters, meditates, devises, plots, speaks.

Notice that the speaking (or in this case e-mail writing) comes after much rather noisy deliberation.

So if you’re expecting an e-reply from me, take heart: it will eventually come.

Meanwhile, imagine me sitting at my computer moaning, muttering, meditating, musing until that ah hah! moment when I know just what to say.

mergencies can happen at any time, and they usually strike completely without warning.

Natural disasters, terrorist attacks, car troubles, explosions and other catastrophes are the last thing you probably want to think about, but not thinking about the unexpected could put you and your family in danger.

In the event of a natural disaster or other crisis, your emergency kit should at least provide for your most basic needs: food, water, warmth, and clean air (using a dust mask or even old t-shirt).

Emergencies often sweep you up in chaos and panic. What is needed during this time is the basic essentials of survival … is your family prepared for such an occasion?

If not, NOW is the time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and your car. It may take a few errands to collect all of the essentials, but who can put a price on your family’s security?

Preparing an Emergency Kit for Your Home Every family should keep the basics necessary for at least three days of survival (for each family member and pet) on hand at all times. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends including the following items in your kit: •Water: Plan on one gallon of water, per person per day, plus extra for pets •Food: Stock at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for each family member and pet (along with paper plates, cups and utensils). Good suggestions include ready-to-eat canned meals, meats, fruits and vegetables, canned juices and high-energy foods like granola bars, energy bars and nuts.

•Battery-powered radio and extra batteries: To hear emergency instructions and news updates If you have pets, remember to include extra food and water for them in your emergency kit.

•Flashlight and extra batteries •First-aid kit •Whistle: To signal for help •Dust mask or cotton t-shirt: In the

event air is contaminated, you can place it over your nose and mouth to help filter the air •Moist towelettes: For sanitation •Wrench or pliers: To turn off utilities •Can opener: To open canned foods • Plastic sheeting and duct tape: To “seal” your room by taping windows and other outlets closed if outside air is contaminated •Other family necessities: This could include prescription medications, infant formula, diapers, important family documents, etc.

•Garbage bags and plastic ties: For personal sanitation •Household chlorine bleach and a medicine dropper: You can use 16 drops of regular bleach to one gallon of water to treat water supplies in an emergency •Extra blankets if you live in a cold climate Preparing an Emergency Kit for Your Car In the event your car breaks down and you become stranded, here are the essentials you should keep in your car’s emergency kit: •A flashlight, flares and a first-aid kit •Jumper cables, a tool kit and tire chains •A blanket and some warm winter clothes (in cold climates) •A bag of sand or salt, to use for traction if a tire gets stuck •A snowbrush, ice scraper and snow shovel (in cold climates) •A container of wiper fluid and paper towels •Some non-perishable food and water Put your emergency supplies into one consolidated container or even a couple of backpacks. Then, store your emergency kits in an easy-to-find location in your home and vehicle, and make sure that every family member knows where to find them.

While you can’t predict if and when a disaster may strike, you can give yourself peace of mind that you’ll be well prepared.

Are Girls or Boys More Difficult to Raise?

ost parents would attest that raising any child -boy or girl -- is a difficult, albeit rewarding, job. But there are those who swear that raising one boy is equivalent to raising three girls ... or vice versa. Is there any basis to the claims, or is raising a child simply a challenge, regardless of gender?

Boys thrive on hands-on, tactile activities.

Boys: Active, Risk-Taking ... and Less Likely to Listen?

It turns out that boys are, in fact, more apt to take risks than girls -- the pleasure center of boys’ brains actually is stimulated during risky behaviors. Meanwhile, boys tend to be more aggressive and they are certainly more tactile, needing hands-on approaches to learning and discipline.

Boys are also less likely to listen to you in their early years, though this isn’t necessarily intentional. Boys’ hearing is not as acute as girls’ when they’re first born, and they tend to be less verbal in general ... instead leaning more toward impulsivity.

For this reason, boys may be harder to control, physically, in the early years. They may also have a harder time in school than girls.

Boys really thrive on hands-on learning tools, while most schools favor more visualauditory learning. As a result, they may fall behind girls in school. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, when compared to girls: • Boys are 30 percent more likely to flunk or drop out of school • Boys score lower on grades and homework in elementary, secondary, high school, college and even graduate school • Boys are four to five times more likely to be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) “ ... For the average boy, school is not as good a fit as it is for the average girl.

More boys have problems with attention and focus than girls. Because of their higher activity level, boys are likely to get into more trouble than girls. And they are not given enough opportunities to move around - both in actual physical activity

and in how they learn - because they spend too much time sitting and not enough time learning by doing, making and building things,” says Michael Thompson, Ph.D. on PBS.org.

Girls: People-Pleasers, Insecure ... and Over-Communicators?

Girls respond to your facial expressions and tone of voice sooner than boys do.

As infants, girls tend to be more cautious, more eager to please, and more likely to listen than boys. Part of this is because the verbal regions in girls’ brains develop more quickly. Girls also tend to study faces more, where they quickly pick up on things like tone of voice and expression.

On the other hand, because girls tend to be more wary and compliant, they’re also more likely to be insecure than boys ... and may need an extra push to try out new things. And because girls are so intune with communication, when they reach their pre-teen and teenage years, you can expect much more drama. Girls, for instance, may talk back more than boys, and they may experience harsher arguments with friends or emotional bullying at school.

Some parents also believe that while boys may be more “high-maintenance” physically, girls tend to be highmaintenance emotionally.

All a Matter of Perception?

When all is said and done, the above descriptions may perfectly describe your parenting experiences. Then again, they may not. Some girls may actually be confident risk-takers, boys completely intune with their emotions. It just depends, as every child is unique in their challenges and simplicities.

So rather than focusing on which gender is more difficult, perhaps the better thing to think about is how to enjoy the individual traits that make up your unique child.

Love Isn’t Enough? Getting Along Together

T

here was a couple struggling to keep their marriage together.

They’d had counseling, tried to revive their romance and nothing, absolutely nothing seemed to be working. The husband was discussing his relationship with a friend. And the friend asked if he stilled loved his wife. To which he replied ‘Yes, I do.’ And then after thinking about it some more the husband says to his friend, ‘What do you do when love isn’t enough?’

It would be amazing to think that the foundation of all healthy and sound relationships isn’tenough. Well what do you do when love isn’t enough?

I say that it is always enough. Love perfected is all you will ever need for a healthy and happy relationship. It is not that something is lacking in love, but that something is lacking in us.

The question becomes is that person the one to whom you want to give it all too?

Are they worth it? Deserving? Do we trust them with all of us? Will they trample on the best part of us or misuse the greatest gift of all?

When you trust someone with all of you are, when you love them completely and wholly, yes, it is enough. According to scripture, love covers the following: Love never gives up.

Love cares more for others than for self.

Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head, Doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others, Doesn’t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end. (I Cor. 13:37, MSG.) Yes, that is a lot! But it is love in its purest form. When you love someone in this manner, it is more than enough. But when we shrink back because we don’t trust or believe or aren’t ready to give our all, well, that’s another issue altogether. If you are not ready to love so fiercely for whatever reason, that’s cool too, but you really can’t blame it on love.

Things were passed on for the benefit of others. My oh my how things have changed. Now we have become so diversified in our perspective and selfcentered in our ambitions and perfunctory in our concerns.

Thus the cracks of yesterday that some slipped through now have expanded and we are losing folk at an alarming rate. We are advancing and excelling in computer technology, medical research, weapons of

war, buildings and other sciences, but as a whole we are losing.

The fighting and bickering that is put on display at federal, state and local levels of government has had major spill over effects into the public sector. Negative behaviors of corporate america, misguided leadership that has surfaced in the church encourage pawns and their peers to be comfortable with negativity.

Could it be that we have abandoned the idea of “seek ye first the kingdom of God.” We as a people, a nation must embrace Matthew 6:33 “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God andHis Righteousness.”

In to many instances God has become like the spare tire of a car: out of sight, out of mind, when needed open the trunk.

Going Green Is So Much Simpler Than

Most People Think

n increasing number of people are now wanting to do their part to save the planet due to the worsening problems caused by global warming. Unfortunately, numerous people assume that going green is costly and time consuming. Read on to discover several immediate things you can do to get on the path to living green.

Recycling is the top way to start. A lot of people continue to place glass and aluminum items in their normal garbage even though recycling is not that hard to do today. In the US, it’s not hard to locate a trash service that offers glass and aluminum recycling choices. Many people still continue to discard these items even though recycling bins are not hard to find.

It merely takes a few minutes to wash off the cans and bottles before placing them into the recycle bin.

Newspapers are another item that overburden our landfills. Virtually all people will merely take their daily paper and toss it in the garbage when they are done with it. But, there are many other uses that you can get out of your newsprint other than poring over it. Did you know that you can keep your windows clean using newspapers? If you’re tired of seeing small white fragments and streaks on your windowpanes after you clean them with paper towels and cleaner, try to use old newspapers instead. Several community

groups run regular paper drives. Merely compile all of your old newspapers, put them in a stack, and see if the paper drive organizers will come to your location and pick them up.

One more thing that could help you to start to live green is to begin walking a bit more. Lots of people routinely drive short distances merely to buy one thing at their local corner market. If you just walk to the store, not only could it take less time, because you won’t have to locate a parking spot, but you will be saving money on gas and helping to save planet Earth by not burning those fuels.

If you wish to save even more on gas, take the chance to car pool when you can and only mow your lawn two times a month instead of weekly. A gorgeous lawn is good to have but skipping an additional week before you mow again shouldn’t significantly affect it. Using a manual push mower like those more normally used many, many years ago will help to save the environment even more. Numerous hardware shops still carry this type of mower.

When people make up their mind to try green living, it’s easy to make a few lifestyle modifications that will benefit our environment. Likewise, you can find lots of info all over the Internet on other ways to start living green, you only have to look for it.
