World-Class Art Comes to the Museum District: BAIA Print Fair Returns to HMAAC The scope is massive, spanning from the legends of the Harlem Renaissance to the contemporary visionaries defining the future of art.

Black Art in America™ (BAIA) is proud to announce the return of its celebrated BAIA Fine Art Print Fair to the Bayou City. Hosted by the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) in the heart of the Museum District, the fair will run from February 6–8.

Building on the momentum of previous fairs in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and right here in H-Town, this event brings together hundreds of collectors, first-time buyers, and art lovers to engage with the rich legacy of Black printmaking. Whether you are a seasoned collector or a student looking for your first piece of history, this Houston edition expands BAIA’s mission to make fine art accessible to everyone.

A Celebration of Printmaking The BAIA Fine Art Print Fair is an immersive three-day survey of printmaking showcasing limited-edition fine art prints and original works on paper.

he Ensemble Theatre continues its 49th Season with the adaptation of Toni Morrison’s novel ‘The Bluest Eye.’ Originally authored by Nobel Prize (1993) and Pulitzer Prize (1987) Award-Winning Author Toni Morrison in 1970, “The Bluest Eye” was adapted by Lydia R. Diamond in 2005 at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. Often described as “gorgeously written,” ‘The Bluest Eye’ is a wellknown literary work that intricately weaves themes of race, colorism, love, trauma, identity, and culture with the care and understanding that it takes to truly communicate the complexities of the African American experience.

Because of this, she begins to believe that if she had blue eyes, her life would be better, and people would treat her with kindness.

ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE THEATRE The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and enlighten, entertain, and enrich a diverse community. It is the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest, and it also holds the distinction of being one of the nation's largest African American theatres that owns and operates its facility with an in-house production team. Forty-nine years later, the theatre remains one of Houston’s finest historical cultural institutions.

The Ensemble Theatre produces a main stage season of six contemporary and classic works devoted to the portrayal of the African American experience by local and national playwrights and artists. The theatre’s Education Department provides educational workshops, Artist-in-Residence experiences, and a season of live performances for students both offsite and at the theatre. TI's scalable TDA5 high-performance computing system-on-a-chip (SoC) family offers power- and safety-optimized processing and edge artificial intelligence (AI) that supports up to Society of Automotive Engineers Level 3 vehicle autonomy. TI also unveiled the AWR2188, a single-chip, eight-by-eight 4D imaging radar transceiver, to help engineers simplify high resolution radar systems. These devices, alongside the DP83TD555J-Q1 10BASE-T1S Ethernet physical layer (PHY), join TI's broader automotive portfolio for next-generation advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Designed for high-performance computing, TI’s TDA5 SoC family offers edge AI acceleration from 10 trillion operations per second (TOPS) to 1200 TOPS with power efficiency beyond 24 TOPS/W. This scalability, enabled by their chiplet-ready design with Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express interface technology, allows designers to implement different feature sets and support up to Level 3 autonomous driving using a single portfolio. Building on over two decades of experience in automotive processing, the family expands the performance of TI’s existing portfolio to enable automakers to centralize their computing architectures and process advanced AI models.

SINGLE-CHIP, EIGHT-BY-EIGHT RADAR TRANSCEIVER ACHIEVES EARLIER, MORE ACCURATE DETECTION With enhanced perception and reliability in any weather condition, radar is a fundamental technology for sophisticated ADAS and greater vehicle autonomy. Designed to meet global market needs, TI’s AWR2188 4D imaging radar transceiver integrates eight transmitters and eight receivers into a single launch-on-package chip. This integration simplifies higher-resolution radar systems because eight-by-eight configurations do not require cascading, while scaling up to higher channel counts requires fewer devices. The transceiver supports both satellite and edge architectures, offering automakers the flexibility to simplify and accelerate the global deployment of ADAS features across entry-level to premium vehicles.

The AWR2188 features enhanced analog-to-digital converter data processing and a radar chirp signal slope engine, both supporting 30% faster performance than currently available solutions. This level of performance powers advanced radar use cases such as detecting lost cargo, distinguishing between closely positioned vehicles and identifying objects in high-dynamic-range scenarios. The transceiver can detect objects with greater accuracy at distances >350m, altogether enabling safer, more autonomous driving.

10BASE-T1S TECHNOLOGY EXTENDS ETHERNET TO VEHICLE EDGE NODES The acceleration toward SDVs and higher levels of autonomy is prompting a fundamental shift in subsystem architectures. Ethernet is an important enabler for this evolution, as it allows systems to collect and transmit more data across vehicle zones in real time through a simple, unified network architecture. TI’s new DP83TD555J-Q1 10BASE-T1S Ethernet Serial Peripheral Interface PHY with an integrated media access controller offers nanosecond time synchronization, industry-leading reliability and Power over Data Line capabilities. These features enable engineers to extend high-performance Ethernet to vehicle edge nodes while reducing cable design complexity and costs.

CHARITY CARTER’S VISION FOR FORT BEND HOUSTON FINDS A PARTNER IN H-E-B

or 25 years, the shuttered Kroger at the corner of Fuqua Street and Blueridge Road in Missouri City stood as a quiet monument to what used to be. For Charity Carter, it was a reminder of what could be.

Now, the silence of that defunct retail center has been replaced by the sound of celebration as the Robert & Bertha Edison Cultural Arts Center comes to life. The $35 million revitalization project has transformed an abandoned shopping plaza into a 79,525-square-foot beacon of hope for the Fort Bend community.

The milestone was bolstered by a historic investment from Texas retail giant H-E-B, whose support has helped solidify the center’s mission to provide arts education and economic opportunity in a historically underserved area.

“This project has been a journey—one of faith, perseverance, and a deep commitment to the people who call this community home,” said Carter, the founder and executive director of the Edison Arts Foundation. “We’ve had to navigate so many hurdles, but the vision keeps us going.”

A LEGACY IN THE MAKING The center is named in honor of Carter’s parents, Robert and Bertha Edison. For Carter, the location is deeply personal; it is the same plaza where her parents used to take her to shop when she was a child.

By reclaiming the space, Carter is doing more than just renovating a building—she is anchoring a "revitalization without gentrification," a term coined by U.S. Rep. Al Green, who helped secure federal funding for the project.

A MULTI-PHASE TRANSFORMATION

The grand opening marks the culmination of Phase 2 of the multi-year project. While the immediate focus is the After school Arts Academy—offering instruction in music, dance, and visual arts—the full scope of the center is massive.

Once complete, the facility will feature: • A 400-plus seat performing arts theater and a 165-seat black box theater.

• State-of-the-art dance studios and a youth center with computer labs.

• A community park, green space, and a healthcare facility.

• A food hall, co-op kitchen, and retail spaces for local small businesses.

H-E-B also plans to allocate more funding to the arts center as additional programs emerge, as part of their commitment to donate 5% of pre-tax earnings to Texas communities, said Harris.

The City of Houston’s Housing and Community Development Department also invested $5 million into the project, viewing it as a blueprint for urban renewal.

At a Jan. ribbon-cutting celebration, Carter said the focus will be on the children who will soon fill the halls with music and movement. Carter adds that the building is the vessel, but the community is the soul.

Beyond the stage, the center is designed to be an economic engine. Carter expects the facility to draw more than 208,820 visitors annually, breathing life back into a neighborhood that saw small businesses vanish after the Kroger closed a quarter-century ago.

“A thing constructed can only be loved after it is built. But a thing created is loved before it even exists,” added Troy Carter, the foundation’s director of government affairs. “The Edison Arts Foundation embarked on a creation that has been loved from the beginning. The arts make a difference, and this center will be a place where every child who walks through its doors can dream bigger.”

In addition to the $1.5 million H-E-B partnership, the Center will offer naming rights to the 400-seat theater, which will open as part of phase 3.

While modern medicine offers strong protection through the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, recent outbreaks show that awareness and community action are vital to keeping measles at bay. In Houston, health officials are taking swift measures to address potential exposure linked to a travel-related case identified in neighboring Fort Bend County.

The Houston Health Department (HHD) is actively identifying and reaching out to Houston residents who may have been exposed in connection with Fort Bend County’s first confirmed case. Health officials emphasize that this case remains travel-related and is not linked to the ongoing outbreak in West Texas.

“ Our team is working diligently to notify and provide guidance to those who may have been in contact with the individual,” said Dr. David Persse, City of Houston’s Chief Medical Officer. “Measles is highly contagious, but it is also preventable with vaccination.”

The MMR vaccine offers 97% protection against measles with the recommended two doses. “Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and our community,” added Dr. Persse. “We strongly encourage anyone who is not fully vaccinated to get their MMR shots as soon as possible.”

Because measles can lead to serious complications, particularly for young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems, HHD urges residents to verify their vaccination records and stay alert for symptoms such as fever, cough, red eyes, and rash. Those who may have been exposed should contact their healthcare provider before visiting a clinic to avoid spreading the infection to others.

BE ALERT TO SCAMMERS WHILE TRAVELING

•A pply Scrutiny. Be suspicious of anyone emailing, calling, messaging or approaching you in person, possibly in a company uniform, claiming to need your personal information.

•T ake Control. Keep your personal information, payment cards and devices with you under your control.

•V erify Contact. Before responding to an email, call, text or voice message, disconnect and research contact information to verify legitimacy.

• Look for Tampering. Be leery of QR codes that appear to be affixed by a sticker. Also watch for skimming devices on gas pumps by jiggling them. If there is any movement, don’t insert your card.

•C heck Websites. If you scan a QR code, a web link will appear. Review it carefully for anomalies and type in a legitimate website address rather than clicking the link.

HERE ARE SCAMS TO WATCH FOR WHILE TRAVELING:

News Provider ravelers are a key target for scammers, and criminals are looking to cash in on you being distracted. Visa has observed an uptick in 2025 of sophisticated, travel-related scams where well-known travel providers are convincingly impersonated, and, according to a McAfee Travel Report, one in five Americans has fallen victim to a travel scam.

Artificial intelligence has made it easier to be duped by fake websites, calls, email and texts. Even just ordering car service can open you up to being scammed by impersonators that may contact you directly through an otherwise trusted app.

Fake QR Codes. Scammers will replace real QR codes with fake ones to redirect your phone to a malicious website.

Juice Jacking. If you plug a phone or laptop into a public charging station, hackers can potentially compromise the outlet to transfer malware to or steal data from a connected device.

Hacked Luggage. Smart luggage with built-in USB chargers, GPS tracking and digital locks can be hacked.

Scammers can locate your bags and unlock them remotely.

Maintaining vigilance is the best way to avoid trouble while traveling, but here are some additional preventative measures you can take:

•C harge Cautiously. Use your own charging adapter and cable instead of public USB ports.

•S ecure Devices. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned off on all devices – even smart luggage – when not in use.

When using the internet, opt to connect through data roaming rather than public Wi-Fi and use a VPN whenever possible.

•W ait to Post. Don’t post your travel photos showing you are away from home until you return.

Delicious & Healthy: Winter White Bean Chicken Chili By d-mars.com News Provider

uring the winter and even fall season, chili is probably one of the most user-friendly meals that can be altered for healthy eating and when you don’t want to calorie watch.

Registered Dietitian (RD) Amy Keating, a nutritionist at Consumer Reports said, “Chili is a dish even the most inexperienced cook can handle.”

Now making one from scratch may require some skill. However, check out this recipe for White Bean Chili with Chicken. It’s a quick and easy meal that if you choose, bring out the slow cooker to save time.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • 1 small onion, diced • 2 tsp. chili powder • 1 tsp. cumin • 1 tsp. garlic powder

• 2 oz. cream cheese • 1 lime, juiced • Suggested toppings: tortilla chips, sliced avocado, jalapeno, lime

WHAT YOUR POT SHOULD HAVE IN IT: • In a 6- or 8-quart instant pot, add the list of ingredients, onion through corn. Lay chicken on top. Don’t stir.

• Close the lid, set pressure vent to Sealing and pressure cook on high for 20 minutes.

• Allow pressure to come down naturally for 10 minutes and then release remaining pressure by turning pressure valve to Venting position. This takes 2 minutes.

• Open the lid and shred the chicken (I did this, carefully, with it still in the pot), using two forks.

• Stir in cilantro, yogurt, cream cheese and lime juice.

• Serve with toppings as desired.

• For The Crockpot Lovers: • Coat a large skillet with olive oil and warm over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

• 1 tsp. salt

• Add chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt and pepper and cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly.

• Freshly ground black pepper

• In a small bowl, add about 1 cup of beans and mash with a fork.

• 2 (15 oz.) cans navy beans

• Transfer contents of skillet and all beans to slow cooker. Add broth, corn, and chicken.

Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 3 hours.

• 1 cup chicken broth • 1 (15 oz.) can corn • 2 large chicken breasts • Small bunch of cilantro, finely chopped • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt

• Shred chicken with 2 forks. Stir in cilantro, yogurt, cream cheese and lime juice.

• Serve with toppings as desired.
