“Christmas With Kiotti” Brings Meals, Gifts & Holiday Cheer to 20 Houston Families

Martin and Kiotti both gathered families during this holiday season, to blend generosity, entertainment, and unforgettable surprises in a one-night experience for deserving families in need.

Families were served a soul food dinner, including mac & cheese, fried chicken, greens, and sweet potatoes. The meal created a family-style atmosphere filled with comfort, connection, and holiday warmth.

The night was filled with excitement as guests participated in raffle drawings, games, and interactive fun. Kiotti and Justin Martin’s Law Firm ensured that every family not only enjoyed the experience but also left with meaningful gifts. Throughout the night, raffles and games were played where prizes included $200 H-E-B gift card, Houston Zoo Light tickets, tickets to Fantasia, Houston Rockets floor seats, two $250 She’s Happy Hair gift cards and more!

One family who was selected for this family-style dinner and experience was a single father whose 14-year-old son has autism. His son had never been to a professional NBA basketball game and ended up walking away with two courtside seats to the upcoming Houston Rockets game! No words could express how grateful he was to have the opportunity to experience such a special moment with his son.

In addition to raffle prizes, every family received a $500 gift card courtesy of Justin Martin’s Law Firm, ensuring that each household received direct holiday support. Every family also received a $200 H-E-B gift card to ensure lovely meals for the holiday season.

Empowering Lives with a Purpose:

A Houston Nonprofit Transforming Communities By d-mars.com News Provider amaal D. Lathan is more than a community advocate—he’s a catalyst for change. As the CEO and founder of Empowering Lives with a Purpose, a mission-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Lathan has dedicated his life to uplifting underprivileged students and families across the Houston area. What began in 2017 as a simple community service drive has grown into a dynamic initiative providing resources, mentorship, and hope to those who need it most. Through his unwavering commitment, Lathan continues to turn compassion into action, empowering lives one family at a time.

We are targeting these schools because it's been an ongoing issue within the City of Houston school districts that campuses with high concentrations of low-income children are being short changed. Studies have shown that many districts within the City of Houston aren't paying their fair share of local and state funds to those schools, so campuses with fewer poor children end up receiving more of the money. Campuses with a larger amount of lower income students have been suffering for years due to this ongoing issue.

4. W HAT ARE THE ACTIVITIES YOU DO THROUGHOUT THE YEAR? Empowering Lives with a Purpose sponsors an annual Back to School Drive every year which is supported by the City of Houston, Houston City Council (District H) Mario Castillo, and the Houston Public Library. The Back to School Drive helps those lower income students start off the school year with a fresh start. We also assist students and families throughout the school as well. We have an annual Fall Festival which consists of students coming out enjoying music, food, drinks, games and haunted houses. We also have a Winter Toy Drive where we sponsor students and families that's less fortunate with toys and clothes to help bring holiday cheer to those that's in need. And we also have an annual Spring Festival where we have a big celebration within the community where we provide food, music, and games for students and families.

Lathan recently sat down with d-mars. com Business Journal to discuss his journey, his mission, and the impact of Empowering Lives with a Purpose.

1. NAME OF YOUR ORGANIZATION AND HOW DID YOUR ORGANIZATION GET STARTED? WHEN?

5. WHAT ARE SOME MAJOR IMPACTS YOU FEEL YOU'VE MADE? Since 2017, Empowering Lives with a Purpose has been a beacon of hope for underprivileged students and families across Houston. What started as local outreach in the Aldine Independent School District has evolved into a far-reaching movement - now impacting thousands within Houston ISD and beyond. We have empowered over 1,000 plus students and families through direct aid and support programs. We have expanded from one school district to serving multiple areas across Houston. We've also partnered with the University of Houston Downtown Basic Needs Center to extend holiday support to other disadvantaged children, furthering our mission to bring hope and joy to those in need.

My name is Jamaal D. Lathan, I am the CEO and founder of Empowering Lives with a Purpose which is a mission-driven 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that has been uplifting and empowering underprivileged students and families in the Houston area since 2017. In 2017, I founded Empowering Lives with a Purpose, starting with a community service drive that evolved into a comprehensive program dedicated to assisting underprivileged students and families in the City of Houston.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR PRIMARY GOALS? At the core of our goals and mission is a deep belief that every child, regardless of their background or economic status, deserves the opportunity to thrive. We are committed to equipping students with the essential tools, resources and support they need to step confidently into their future. We invest in the community not only with supplies but with hope, encouragement, and a belief in each student's potential to succeed. We measure our success by the lives we touch, the futures we help shape, and the barriers we break together. With the unwavering support of our dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors, we continue to set bold goals- knowing that real change begins when we work hand-in hand to uplift those in need.

Empowering Lives with a Purpose exists to inspire, equip, and walk alongside the youth of today- so they can become leaders tomorrow.

6. WHAT ARE MAJOR GOALS FOR YOU IN THE FUTURE?

Empowering Lives with a Purpose future looks so bright. We are looking to start a scholarship program to help assist high school graduating students that's in need to be able to further their education and go to college. We are also looking to keep expanding and combating the needs and issues for lowered income students and families within the Houston area.

3. WHAT MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY DO YOU TARGET? Empowering Lives with a Purpose targets and focuses on underprivileged students, schools and families within the community. We target schools in the City of Houston with a large number of lower

Texas Southern University and National Black Empowerment Council Sign Agreement to Expand Global Academic Partnerships and Innovation Opportunities

exas Southern University and the National Black Empowerment Council (NBEC) have signed an agreement establishing a strategic partnership to develop academic, cultural, and leadership initiatives that strengthen the global positioning of Black institutions and expand international educational and innovation opportunities for Texas Southern students, faculty, and administrators.

“At Texas Southern, our mission is manifold,” said President J.W. Crawford III. “We are here to educate some of the best and brightest minds. And we’re here to empower our students, faculty, staff, and community. This collaboration will connect our students and faculty to new academic exchanges, cultural dialogues, and leadership pipelines that reach from Houston to Israel and far beyond.

We are proud to be part of an effort that affirms the global significance of historically Black institutions.”

The new agreement will offer exchange programs for Texas Southern students and collaborative research projects, along with other opportunities for global academic and cultural exchange. Under the agreement, the two will collaborate to facilitate international academic partnerships, support leadership exchanges and convenings, and explore innovation-focused programming that connects Texas Southern to global networks and opportunities.

“This partnership is about widening a world that young people will be able to step into, and giving them access, networks and experiences that cannot be replicated in the classroom alone,” said NBEC Founder and President Darius Jones. “It is also about

strengthening the ties between two communities whose histories have been intertwined in struggle and progress. The Black and Jewish communities have achieved some of the most meaningful civil rights victories in American history when we’ve come to work together, and at this moment where

rhetoric can easily divide, partnerships like this remind the world what is still possible when we choose to build.

NBEC, a national organization committed to empowering Black communities through civic leadership, strategic convening, economic development, and international partnerships, will prioritize Texas Southern for participation in delegations, exchanges, and international convenings, including opportunities connected to NBEC’s formal partnerships with Israeli universities.

KEY AREAS OF COLLABORATION Through the agreement, Texas Southern and NBEC intend to collaborate in areas that include: • Facilitating global academic partnerships through joint programs, exchanges, research collaborations, and innovation hubs connected to NBEC’s international partner network.

• Advancing Black-Jewish collaboration through joint convenings, leadership exchanges, and cultural diplomacy initiatives that position Texas Southern University as a leading HBCU partner.

• Exploring innovation ecosystem development to support student-led ventures, research commercialization, and international investment partnerships, with focus areas including clean energy, fintech, AI, and agriculture.

Entrepreneurship Center: Created for the sole purpose of empowering, mentoring, and supporting the cohort of entrepreneurs, particularly entrepreneurs of color, in gaining the wisdom, knowledge, and skills to become self-sufficient and triumphant business owners by providing the foundation necessary to create successful enterprises.

That enduring mission was on full display at the Houston Area Urban League’s Equal Opportunity Day Gala, held on Saturday, December 13th. The event brought together community leaders, partners, and supporters for an inspiring evening celebrating progress, resilience, and the collective power of opportunity.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY DAY GALA The Houston Area Urban League hosted its 57th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Hilton Americas Houston, marking a historic milestone for the organization. The evening raised more than $1.3 million, the highest amount ever raised in the organization’s 57-year history, to support programs that strengthen families, advance workforce readiness, support entrepreneurship, expand housing stability, and promote health and wellness across the Greater Houston region.

The sold-out gala brought together more than 900 civic leaders, corporate partners, elected officials, and community champions for an unforgettable night of celebration, impact, and purpose.

The evening was led by Equal Opportunity Day Gala Chairs Morris and Toni Mooney Smith, whose leadership and dedication helped bring the night to life. Morris Smith serves as Vice President of Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability at Arca Continental Coca Cola Southwest Beverages, while Toni Mooney Smith serves as Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Texas A&M University Galveston.

The Houston Area Urban League was proud to recognize its Title Sponsors, including Arca Continental Coca Cola Southwest Beverages, and Shell USA, Inc., for their leadership and continued support.

Later in the evening, guests were treated to live entertainment by R and B legends CUPID and After 7, creating an atmosphere filled with celebration, joy, and memorable moments that carried throughout the night.

Robinson III, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Houston Area Urban League, closed the evening with heartfelt remarks reflecting on leadership, service, and collective impact. “Tonight, we celebrated leaders who do not seek recognition, but who show up every day with a genuine commitment to serving others. Your work reminds us that real leadership is rooted in selflessness and in choosing to invest time, resources, and heart into improving the lives of others. This work is not easy. It requires sacrifice, consistency, and a deep belief that when we lift others, we all rise. Each of our honorees embodies that belief, and we are grateful for the example you set for our community. This evening is a reminder of what can happen when people come together with purpose. Thank you for standing with us and for helping us continue this work today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.”

In a world dominated by social media and the mantra of "Bigger is better," it's easy to overlook the fact that God's profound miracles working in our lives can arise from modest beginnings. Often, we're so focused on monumental achievements that we forget the remarkable transformations that occur in seemingly insignificant moments. Let's explore why we might undervalue these small successes and discuss ways to nurture gratitude to keep moving forward.

REDEFINING SUCCESS THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS It's easy to lose sight of the small victories when we're consumed by society's standards of success. However, Romans 12:2 encourages us to diverge from societal norms, urging us to keep our minds centered on God's standards. Take Paul, for example. Even when faced with great adversity, his prayers were firmly rooted in spiritual growth rather than physical concerns (Philippians 1:9; Philemon 1:6). As believers, our focus should be on making an eternal impact and serving the kingdom with purpose.

FINDING STRENGTH IN SETBACKS No matter how picture-perfect someone else's life may appear, you never truly know the struggles they've faced and overcome. In moments when mistakes and setbacks leave us feeling defeated, celebrating might seem like the last thing we want to do. It's easy to get caught up in comparisons, disappointment, and self-criticism, losing sight of the breakthroughs that often lie beyond our failures. Keeping your focus on Christ, you won't be swayed by the enemy's deceitful tactics (John 8:44). We often learn more from our missteps than from our triumphs. The challenges we encounter might just be laying the groundwork for a future ministry or the growth of our business.

CELEBRATE YOUR WINS, IGNORE THE NOISE When caught up in the opinions of others, we can forget to celebrate our achievements.

In the shadow of your small victories, there will always be those who doubt you or think you're not up to par. However, it's essential to tune out the noise of external opinions (Proverbs 29:25). There's no need to validate your worth to anyone. While we may lack the ability to create abundance from little, remember that God can (Matthew 14:17-21).

Trust that you are destined to make a significant impact—whether it be on a generation, a nation, a community, or even the entire world!

STAYING GROUNDED IN GRATITUDE Can we truly remain humble when showered with more abundance, or will our ego risk overshadowing gratitude? Proverbs 16:18 warns us of the pitfalls of pride. Sometimes, the modest gifts we receive are intentional, offering us a clearer view of God's miracles in action. If God gives us too much too soon, we might overlook His miracles that unfold around us. It's crucial to recognize and celebrate small victories, because the enemy uses this dissatisfaction to distract us, knowing that these seemingly small successes are just the prelude to God orchestrating something grand for His glory. If we lose our focus on Christ, we risk becoming consumed by what we lack, rather than making the most of what we have been given. Remember to be grateful for the lessons learned at every stage, so you don’t repeat mistakes as you rise to greater heights.

This holiday season is a wonderful opportunity to remind ourselves to cherish every achievement, no matter how small. The most significant breakthroughs don’t necessarily occur on grand stages or under the spotlight but in quiet moments and modest beginnings. Keep showing up and nurturing those humble beginnings, for they can lead to remarkable achievements.

Every effort you make, no matter how small, holds great value (Zechariah 4:10). Ecclesiastes 9:11 teaches us that victory doesn’t always go to the fastest. A friend once shared a powerful quote with me: “Put God first and you’ll never be last.” As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let's walk with gratitude and see how God can work through us to bring blessings to others, all for His glory.

Alignment is a state of integrity between who you are, what you value, and how you move through the world. When alignment is present, life may still be demanding, but it feels honest. When alignment is absent, even success feels heavy—because it requires you to perform against your own knowing.

THIS IS WHERE GROWTH GETS REAL. Alignment asks you to live congruently. To stop separating who you are from how you operate. To release patterns that once protected you but now restrict you.

Alignment invites you to release identities you’ve outgrown, step away from spaces where you are useful but unseen, choose clarity over familiarity, and honor your evolution without waiting for permission. It calls you to move forward with courage, trusting that growth often requires letting go of what no longer reflects who you are becoming.

Alignment isn’t a single moment—it’s a daily practice of integrity. Also include water, flashlights and high-calorie snacks like trail mix. Don't forget phone chargers, jumper cables, a shovel and ice scraper, a tarp, snow brushes and a bag of sand or cat litter to give your tires some traction if you need to get out of an icy mess.

Be mindful of distractions Texting while driving is the top culprit in distracted driving, according to a survey from State Farm. But that's not the only one. Grooming, checking maps, interacting with kids in the back seat, eating, or even rubbernecking at an accident can cause an accident of your own. Also, be alert for wildlife and pedestrians.

Oil changed and tires winter ready? Check! Lights all functioning and fluids topped off?

Check! How about the wipers? What about your battery life? Before you go, make sure your car is in tip-top shape so you get to your destination and home again safely. Even pop an extra jug of windshield washing fluid into your trunk, just in case.

Monitor the weather along your route to know what you're driving into. You can arrange to stop in a hotel, if necessary, or delay your trip. The last thing you want is to be on the road in dangerous driving conditions.

Plan your route Hop on your favorite mapping app and plan the best route for your trip, including stops for meals or overnights in a hotel. Many apps revise your route based on traffic patterns and accidents on the road ahead, so keep it on for any changes.

Fight fatigue: If you're driving a long distance, plan to take breaks every few hours or 100 miles to refuel, get out of the car, stretch and walk around for a bit. You don't want to nod off while driving.

Here's a classic homemade Sock It to Me Cake recipe!

This cake is rich, buttery, and filled with a delicious cinnamonpecan streusel that gives it a flavorful twist.

• 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened • 2 cups granulated sugar • 4 large eggs • 1 cup sour cream • 1/4 cup whole milk • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt INGREDIENTS FOR THE FILLING: • 1 cup chopped pecans • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

• 1 cup powdered sugar • 2–3 tablespoons milk • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat and Prep • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

A Sock It to Me Cake is a Southern classic: a moist, tender Bundt cake with a swirl of cinnamon-sugar and chopped pecans hidden inside, creating a delightful surprise in every slice. This cake combines the rich flavors of butter, vanilla, and sour cream for a decadent crumb, while the cinnamon-pecan filling adds a warm, spiced contrast. Finished with a sweet glaze drizzled over the top, this cake is simple yet indulgent—a perfect treat for Christmas, holiday gatherings, or just a cozy night at home. It's an easy, comforting dessert that’s as impressive as it is delicious.

4. Assemble the Cake • Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared Bundt pan and spread it evenly.

• Sprinkle the pecan streusel mixture over the batter.

• Pour the remaining batter over the filling and spread it evenly.

5. Bake • Bake for 50–60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

• Let the cake cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then carefully invert it onto a wire rack to cool completely.

6. Make the Glaze • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and pourable. Add more milk if needed for the desired consistency.

7. Glaze the Cake • Once the cake is completely cool, drizzle the glaze over the top.
