hanks to the explosion of ecommerce over the past couple decades, consumers can find virtually any product or service they can think of online. In fact, the consumer ecommerce market is expected to approach $6 trillion by 2027, according to the International Trade Administration, up from roughly $4 trillion in 2024.

Personalized Products Online buying platforms that allow for customization of products such as shoes, clothing, and drinkware can create buyer engagement and earn loyal shoppers. In fact, a survey

by McKinsey Insights found 80% of loyal customers prefer shopping with brands that offer tailored choices and personalized experiences.

While major marketplace retailers still lead the category, ecommerce has become commonplace among small businesses, too. S.A.F.E. COMMUNITIES to host free community event and honor scholarship recipients By d-mars.com News Provider

n Aug. 2 for the second-straight year, S.A.F.E. Communities will host its Scholarship Certificate Presentation to honor those who successfully graduated from its program.

“We see the kids come across the stage and get a certificate for the work that they have done,” Dr. Thelma Scott, Founder and President of S.A.F.E. Communities, said. “That’s the most important thing: seeing their work payoff and letting other kids in the community see it. Next, they’ll say, ‘I want to be in the program, so I can be honored too.’”

S.A.F.E. also welcomes other families not in the program to attend the free event, as they’ll be giving away free school supplies, celebrating birthdays, and holding a college resource fair, along with more fun and informative opportunities. For avid readers between grades K-8, there will also be book scholarships of $200 given out.

The event takes place at the ULH Event Center on United Leuva Circle from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

ABOUT DR. SCOTT AND S.A.F.E. COMMUNITIES In 1980, Dr. Scott fell into a great depression after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and suffered a debilitating fall that left her with metal screws and plates in her neck after major surgery — all while undergoing chemotherapy.

When it was evident that Dr. Scott’s condition had worsened, her husband enrolled her into there. After four-and-a-half years, she her mental health improved, but chemotherapy greatly affected her memory and her speech. She wasn’t even able to write her name.

Dr. Scott enrolled in Lonestar College to teach herself to speak and write again. As a student with a disability, she noticed other students with disabilities around campus, and she wanted to advocate on their behalf.

She and Mr. Scott founded S.A.F.E. Communities in December of 2000; two years later, Dr. Scott graduated from Lonestar College with her associate’s degree in business communication. What began as an organization designed to support students with disabilities has now evolved greatly to what Dr. Scott calls “the one-stop” shop.

S.A.F.E. now serves grades K-12 and throughout college, ensuring kids stay in school, go to college, and stay in college.

The organization specializes in providing support for students with disabilities and mental health issues. They educate students about bullying and stress the importance of academics, writing, and giving back to your community.

S.A.F.E. also provides fundamental emotion and financial support students need stay in and finish school. To this day, S.A.F.E. has awarded over $250 thousand in scholarships to hardworking, deserving students, and is on its way to celebrating a quarter-century of making a difference.

JOINING S.A.F.E. COMMUNITIES Becoming a member is simple: students have to fill out an application to join the program. Dr. Scott does want to emphasize that just joining the program does not guarantee anyone a scholarship when they graduate. Students are expected to fulfill all of the requirements needed to be awarded a scholarship, which means attending monthly phone meetings, turning in monthly essays, and more.

SOUTHEAST INSPIRATIONAL CHOIR: The LEGACY Continues Exuberantly Re-emerging with New EP and Purpose

By Karen Ri’Chard McMillan News Provider ike a new day’s dawn, SouthEast Inspirational Choir (SouthEast/SEIC) exuberantly emerges from their 5-year COVID and production hiatus to present their new extended play record on May 23, 2025, entitled, LEGACY… which is what it really is.

This SEIC legacy, the gift that keeps on giving, spans more than five decades to produce, as foretold years ago by Gospel legend Carole Allen Simmons. The choir has yielded nationally acclaimed gospel artists, musicians, actors, and producers, including Yolanda Adams, Angela Bennett, Gregory Curtis, Gene Moore Jr., Risé Joiner Peters, Nikki Ross, Jennifer Holiday, Christopher Walker, Donald “DēP” Paige, Dana Monique, Evangeline Young, Quinn Lagrone, David Bennett, Truth, Deleatrice “Dee” Washington, Rennette Brown, Demetria Jackson, Charles Jones, Philip Cornish, AND influenced so many others.

SouthEast Inspirational Choir, formerly SouthEast Inspirational Youth Choir, was established in 1970 by gospel music trailblazers Brenda Waters, Carl Preacher, and Shirley Joiner (BC&S), who ministered music in their respective Missionary Baptist Churches in Southeast Houston, Mt. Olive, Outreach and Christian Hope. In 1971, SouthEast presented their first DEDICATION & PRAISE concert at Houston’s South Park Baptist Church on Valentine’s Day, successfully prompting their founders to make them a permanent choir. Later that year, they performed at James Cleveland’s Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) in Dallas where they were awarded 1971-72 Most Promising Choir.

That recognition landed them a record deal, the first youth choir to get signed without auditioning, and so their journey began…

Though their founders have gone to their heavenly home, as reflected in many of the songs they penned, they are never forgotten.

Because of the impact they made on the lives of many, their gospel legacy endures and much of its history is recorded on the back of SouthEast albums.

From the 70s through the 90s, SouthEast

members learned to sing, perform, and minister in local churches, revivals, conventions, theaters, television, museums, parks, prisons, campaigns, nursing homes. and churches in the U.S. They sang abroad in Europe, Barbados, and Japan with many members recalling first flights, passports, and major artist connections. More than a choir, SouthEast was family because many of its members not only sang together, but attended classes, worked, played, and grew up together. At a time when big choirs were trendy, what made them different was their extraordinary vocal tone and range, decorum, strict schedules, community mindset, and contemporary customized music written for them by BC&S. Their directors handed these young charges ‘the CHARGE,’ unknowingly making gospel music history. And so SouthEast became known as the choir that recognized and developed the musical gifts of youth and young adults, and many wanted to join.

Their songs were recorded live, and in the studio; and people all over the country imitated the ‘SouthEast sound’ still relevant today.

For three decades, if a church wanted a guest choir to sing at their anniversary, they called SouthEast. When a choir was needed to sing in the Gospel at Colonus production at Miller Outdoor Theater, SouthEast was chosen. When producers were searching for talent to sing “Something Inside So Strong” with Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, and Dolly Parton at NASA, they called SouthEast, and when Ray Charles recorded a song in Houston and looked for a local choir, a call was made to SouthEast. For years, local and out-of-state fans attended the choir’s annual Re dedication Anniversary concerts in Houston on the second Sunday in February where renowned gospel artists such as Daryl Coley, Twinkie Clark, The Anointed Pace Sisters, The Winans, Vanessa

Bell Armstrong, Donnie McClurklin, Lisa Paige-Brooks, Richard Smallwood, Donald Lawrence, Richard Odom, and many more were their musical guests.

In 2001-2010, SEIC, Inc., embraced their inheritance by hosting Preparing Holy Disciples Youth & Young Adult Conferences (PHD) where they gathered and taught hundreds of young people about salvation, music, and life; and also gave college scholarships to aspiring leaders. These youth – many of them SouthEast children, cousins, and friends of friends who learned about singing, instrumentation, church, and purpose – are their legacy and still connected today. Today, SEIC members say, ‘those sweet, precocious, busy, restless, talented children, now adults, inherited the charge.’

The Choir is proud that their planted seeds continue to yield gifted artists, singers, musicians, teachers, preachers, and business owners.

On a historic second Sunday in February 2020, SEIC celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reunion concert at Houston’s Silverlake Baptist Church. More than 1700 ‘family’ members gathered and were spiritually transported as SouthEast Inspirational Choir sang SEIC & BC&S songs that were local and billboard hits, including tributes led by Kim Burrell, Donald Lawrence, The Walls Group, Kathy Taylor, Hedreich Nichols, George Lacefield, and former SEIC members Yolanda and Gene.

Their new Legacy EP is a mashup of that live 50th concert and studio recordings that combine SEIC, PHD and friends reviving the mission of spreading the gospel in song and deed…throughout the generations. Legacy features a remix of three SEIC signature songs: “That Will be Glory for Me,” originally written and led

by Shirley Joiner, now led by daughter director Risé Joiner Peters and granddaughter

Esprit Hunter, Renowned Kathy Taylor, and Songstress Demetria Jackson. “One Look at Jesus,” written by Carl Preacher, led by original soloist Pastor Jesse Jones and his praise-worthy daughter Myra Jones. The last song, “My Liberty/The Difference,” also written by Carl Preacher, is a unique blend of the two songs originally led by Yolanda Adams, now brilliantly led by Yolanda plus a quorum of SouthEast and PHD singers.

Legacy, the long-awaited follow-up of SouthEast’s last album (The Gospel Vol 3) released in Japan in 2000, is produced

by Risé Joiner Peters | Shirise Publishing (“Inspire Me,” Kenny Rogers, Windsor Village), Donald “DēP” Paige | N 2 DeP Publishing (Beyonce, John Legend, Sunday Service), and Paul Richard (V. Michael Mckay, Cedric Ballard). It is a heartfelt homage to BC&S, faithful choir members and celebration of past, present and future.

This historic collaboration is the substance of the familiar SEIC song exhortations: “Look How Far the Lord Has Brought Us” and “Lord Here We Are Again,” and serves an alluring prelude to their Full Circle LP loading.

In February 2025, more than 100 SouthEast villagers gathered for a private preview of the Legacy EP in the SEIC Legacy Hour at member Angela Bennett’s Healer in the Land Conference, Surrounded by family and friends, Risé and SEIC received a mayoral proclamation dubbing February 21 as Risé Joiner Peters & SouthEast Inspirational Choir Day. This marks the second day of recognition for SouthEast in five years, the first being February 9th; the official SouthEast Inspirational Choir Day. Prompted again by the Holy Spirit and their many followers, their resurgence is, for lack of a better word, INSPIRING, while pledging to continue singing and supporting young enthusiasts. As SouthEast leans into their predestined gospel race, enduring, carrying and sharing their legacy torch; old and new friends can expect to receive a musical bequest of the best!

wo former Houston TV news anchors teamed up to talk about mobility and urge everyone to get a Harris County Toll Road Authority EZ TAG to keep it moving.

Jerome Gray, HCTRA Deputy Director of Communications, and Lisa Foronda, senior director of investor communications at Legacy Community Health, aren’t just former KHOU-TV colleagues — they’re friends who had fun working together again to tell the HCTRA story.

It’s not unusual for HCTRA to use TV commercials to share what it’s doing to improve mobility in the region.

“What better way to share the good news and inform the public than to enlist the aid of some familiar faces who once did that on a daily basis,” Gray said.

“It was just like riding a bike,” Gray said of being behind the anchor desk again. “I didn’t even need training wheels.”

Gray wrote the scripts. The commercials were shot at Captiv Studios on a basic desk dressed up to look fancy. It had a HCTRA branded piece of wood on the front to help with the look and feel of a news set.

“While we recognize these spots will probably bring a bit of nostalgia to viewers and radio listeners who’ve been around for a while, we really hope people hear the message and have a better understanding of how vital the toll road system is to our region.”

A Business Professor Asked Dozens of Former Students How They Define Success.

Here are Their Lessons for Today’s Grads.

s the Class of 2025 graduates into an uncertain and fast-changing working world, they face a crucial question: What does it mean to be successful?

Is it better to take a job that pays more, or one that’s more prestigious? Should you prioritize advancement, relationship building, community impact or even the opportunity to live somewhere new?

Patrick Abouchalache, a professor at Boston University, surveyed about 300 former undergraduate students and spoke at length with about 50 of them.

HERE’S THEIR COLLECTIVE ADVICE TO THE CLASS OF 2025: 1. Define what matters most to you Success starts with self-reflection. It means setting aside society’s noise and defining your own values.

Research shows that people driven by intrinsic motivation, or internal rewards, tend to display higher levels of performance, persistence, and satisfaction.

Harvard Business School professor Teresa Amabile’s componential theory further suggests that creativity flourishes when people’s skills align with their strongest intrinsic interests.

The alternative is to “get caught up in society’s expectations of success,” as one consulting alum put it. She described struggling to choose between a job offer at a Fortune 500 company or one at a lesser-known independent firm. In the end, she chose to go with the smaller business. It was, she stressed, “the right choice for me.”

One related principle he shares with students is the “Tell your story” rule. If a job doesn’t allow you to tell your story – in other words, if it doesn’t mirror your vision, values, talents, and goals – keep looking for a new role.

2. Strive for balance, not burnout A fulfilling life includes time for relationships, health, and rest.

3. Be kind, serve others, and maximize your ‘happy circle’ “Some people believe to have a positive change in the world you must be a CEO or have a ton of money,” another alum said. “But spreading happiness or joy can happen at any moment, has no cost, and the results are priceless.”

Many alumni said that success isn’t just a matter of personal achievement – it’s about giving back to society. A retail alum shared advice from her father: “When your circle is happy, you are going to be happy,” she said. “It’s sort of an upward spiral.”

Your “happy circle” doesn’t need to consist of people you know. An alum who went into the pharmaceutical industry said his work’s true reward was measured in “tens of thousands if not millions of people” in better health thanks to his efforts.

4. Be a good long-term steward of your values Success isn’t just about today – it’s what you stand for.

Several alumni spoke passionately about stewardship: the act of preserving and passing on values, relationships, and traditions. This mindset extended beyond family to employees, customers, and communities.

One alum defined success as creating happiness and stability not just for herself, but for her loved ones. Another, who works in hospitality, said he had a duty to further his employees’ ambitions and help them grow and develop – creating a legacy that will outlast any title or paycheck.

In an analysis by the organizational consulting firm Korn Ferry, Gen Z employees were found to be more prone to burnout when their employers lacked clear values. These findings reinforce what these students already know: Alignment between your values and your work is key to success.

Final words for the Class of 2025 Professor Abouchalache offers this advice: Wherever life takes you next — a family business or corporate office, Wall Street or Silicon Valley, or somewhere you can’t even imagine now — remember that your career will be long and full of ups and downs.

For example, a banking alum told said that business once dominated his thoughts “24/7.” He continued, “I’m happier now that I make more time for a social life and paying attention to all my relationships.”

You’ll make tough choices. You’ll face pressures. But if you stay grounded, invest in your well-being, celebrate your happy circle, and honor your values, you’ll look back one day and see not just a job well done, but a life well lived.

And remember that balance and motivations can change

" NAEP scores are a clear reflection of the challenges our education system is facing, with widening gaps between high-performing and low-performing students. The most vulnerable students are falling further behind, and this trend cannot continue," said Dr. Julia Rafal-Baer, board member of the National Assessment Governing Board.

Recent research shows math scores are closely tied to salary at age 30, regardless of a student's background. " Business and industry leaders across our region, and the nation, are seeking applicants with strong math, reasoning, and data analysis skills," said Jack McDougle, president and CEO, Greater Washington Board of Trade. "Both a child's potential for success and the future health of our workforce are dependent on equipping students with the skills that math helps form and strengthen."

CALL TO ACTION The NAEP results have spurred the Collaborative for Student Success to take immediate action.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCURATE ASSESSMENTS Advocates express concern that current changes in the U.S. Department of Education create the possibility of states no longer being held accountable to track and report on student progress through assessments. Bipartisan solutions are available to policymakers that help ensure all kids - especially those from under-resourced communities - have access to a high-quality math education.

STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING MATH EDUCATION IN THE SCHOOLS The organizations are recommending six key strategies, backed by research and practice: 1. Expand access to high-quality instructional materials aligned to rigorous standards.

2. Provide educators with high-quality professional learning focused on effectively using instructional materials in the classroom.

3. Increase instructional time by extending learning opportunities before, during, and after the school day.

4. Automatically enroll students into advanced math courses based on objective assessment results or other data.

5. Hold teacher preparation programs accountable for equipping teachers with the skills and content needed to succeed in math instruction.

6. Leverage math coaches at the school or district level to work closely with teachers to improve classroom practice

and, ultimately, student math achievement. " We also call upon local leaders to directly connect the math needs of our students to the workforce necessities of our communities," added Cowen. "There's no question that the more students that have a strong math education, the stronger our workforce will be."

PROGRESS IS POSSIBLE - AND ALREADY HAPPENING The good news is many states across the country are proving that progress is within reach: • Rhode Island and Mississippi have taken concrete steps to increase access to high-quality instructional materials in math.

• Texas, Washington and North Carolina have implemented automatic enrollment policies to ensure students are not overlooked for advanced math coursework.

• Arkansas and Massachusetts have strengthened teacher preparation programs, requiring higher standards for math instruction.

• Alabama and Colorado are offering programs and resources empowering teachers to improve instruction and extend learning beyond the classroom.

These success stories demonstrate that bipartisan action can yield real results. Now is the time for every state and district to follow their lead.

hen d-mars.com President MR. D-MARS created the Black Industry Experts Directory, he envisioned much more than just an online phone book. The directory was created in hopes of creating a space where Black entrepreneurs and professionals can find each other and work together to create something special in the city of Houston.

“This isn’t the first directory I’ve done, but when I did one for just business owners, some were just startups and side projects that would go out of business, and you would never know,” MR. D-MARS said. “I wanted to have Industry Experts; not just business owners. These are people that are established; that are knowledgeable in their field; that you can trust; and mostly importantly, people you can trust and build up your community with. We have some members that have been doing it over 30 years.”

Still in its infancy, the directory is becoming just that: a community. Or if you ask MR. D-MARS, it’s a fraternity or sorority; a place where Black professionals can look around the room and say, “They’re an Industry Expert just like me. You can trust working with them, and I trust they’ll say the same about me.” “ We’re starting a movement: Black Economics Working,’” MR. D-MARS said. “When we understand the statistics and the history of us working together, our community has always grown. We had a chance to come together and share our thoughts and processes.”

The “chance to come together” was this past April when d-mars.com hosted its very own Private VIP Networking Reception held for members of the Industry Experts Directory. The event was completely free and accessible to only members of the directory — a perk that many organizations don’t offer.

“If you ain’t in the room, you ain’t going to be part of the deal, and this is a very powerful room,” Derrick “D-Reck” Dixon, CEO of Wreckshop records, said of the event. “I would tell anybody, if you do get a chance to network with similar like-minded Black Americans that are trying to push forward, make sure you’re present.”

The Black Maternal Health Crisis We Can’t Ignore

By The Dr. Dawn® Contributing Writer ecent data highlights an increase in maternal deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 688 died in 2024 during pregnancy or shortly after giving birth. That’s up from 669 deaths in 2023, but down from 2022 and 2021. The leading causes of these deaths include blood vessel blockages, infections, and excessive bleeding. What’s disturbing is that a large percentage (80%) of these deaths in the U.S. are preventable.

When it comes to our Black women, they are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Various factors contribute to these disparities, such as the standard of quality healthcare services and underlying long-term conditions. In addition, social considerations can make it challenging for minority groups to have exceptional economic, physical, and emotional health. This would suggest that racial disparities do exist when it comes to our Black mothers.

A group raising awareness and working to combat these statistics is the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA). This Black female-led alliance focuses on supporting Black mothers and moms-to-be. The BMMA is driving advocacy and research efforts, also helping to shift the culture and mindset as it relates to Black maternal health. To help further their efforts to establish rights and justice, they founded Black Maternal Health Week, an annual observance in April.

Though many Black mothers have suffered in silence, they are now more courageous to talk about the prejudices, challenges, and life-threatening experiences during the delivery journey. Not being a mother myself, I was unaware of the racial disparities and pregnancy-related deaths of our Black mothers until my close friend, media personality and journalist, TotallyRandie, almost lost her life while giving birth to her second child. Her experience has since influenced her view of the healthcare system. “Systemic racism is the foundation for the reason why Black women die three times more than white women,” she said. “I've been vocal about the healthcare system in Texas and how it has been on a decline for the past 20 years, but with more of us sharing our stories, you can truly see the gap between the wealthy and non-wealthy.”

Reading TotallyRandie’s journey should be an eye-opener into the systemic racism of the healthcare system and the trauma many Black women encounter during delivery. Her story should make us think twice before just liking a friend's baby photo and quickly scrolling to the next.

Q&A WITH TOTALLYRANDIE: Please describe your childbirth experience in detail. I still struggle to put it into words. It’s been over a year, and I’m still processing what happened. My due date was set for May 14, 2024. While we all know babies can arrive on their own schedule, there were no signs that my daughter would come early.

On May 7, I woke up with a horrible toothache and scheduled a dentist appointment for the next day. But when I got to the dentist’s office, they told me I needed a release form from my doctor before they could do anything.

The problem was that due to the fractured healthcare system in Texas, I didn’t have a doctor at the time. I had to go to the hospital where I was scheduled to deliver to get the release form. Keep in mind, I was in significant pain the entire time.

When I arrived, the nurses asked if I remembered feeling my daughter move the night before. I told them honestly that I didn’t recall because my focus had been on managing my pain. Rather than give me the form and send me on my way, they became fixated on the “no blood” notation in my chart. They asked if I refused blood transfusions. I reaffirmed that I didn’t take blood, and they eventually gave me some pain relief and hooked me up to a monitor to check on my baby, Luxe.

The monitor showed that Luxe was OK. I could feel her moving, and her vitals were strong, but they kept me waiting for the release form. I called my sisters, who stayed on the phone with me for support. Then, out of nowhere, the doctors came in and said they were preparing me for delivery.

I told them I wasn’t ready. I didn’t have my hospital bag, my husband wasn’t with me, and my parents weren’t there either. I was all alone. When I asked why they were doing this, their first justification was that I hadn’t felt Luxe move. I explained that it was because I was in pain, but I could feel her now. Then they said it was because I was 39 weeks along, and they wanted to deliver as a precaution.

The doctor who was to perform the C-section seemed confused by my fear. I told him, “Because Black women die here.” Instead of addressing my concerns, he tried to reassure me by saying he performs 60 C-sections a year and that women fly from all over the world to have him as their surgeon. That didn’t ease my fears.

I begged them to at least wait until my husband or parents arrived. Thankfully, they agreed. But while we waited, they kept asking me about blood transfusions. It felt like they weren’t listening to me. When my husband finally arrived, they began to prep me. While doing so, I overheard them arguing about how much anesthesia to give me. One said to go by weight, while the other insisted on using kilos. I was so scared, but I didn’t have time to process it all.

Once I was in the operating room and they administered the epidural, I was lying back, but I immediately told them something felt off. I said, “Please remind me to breathe.” That was my last thought before my heart stopped.

When I came to, I gasped for air. It was painful, like a fire raging through my chest. I fought to breathe for what felt like an eternity, and in my confusion, I even swatted at the doctor, thinking he was trying to harm me. Nurses were crying over me, saying they thought I was gone and they had lost me. I could hear my baby crying in the distance, but I couldn’t fully comprehend what had just happened.

I looked over to see my husband, his face frozen in shock. It wasn’t until later that I learned my heart had stopped while Luxe was still inside me. They performed an emergency

workers, aren’t prioritized the same way as others. This is systemic racism at its core, and it’s costing us far too much.

What advice or message would you give to Black mothers-to-be as they prepare for labor? First and foremost, consider having a doula or someone you trust to advocate for you during the entire process. If your insurance covers a doula, absolutely take advantage of that. If not, make sure you have someone by your side who can speak up for you when you need it most. And remember, you’ll need to advocate for yourself, too, as much as you’re able. Getting your nursery ready, picking out adorable outfits, and even doing your hair are all important, but nothing matters more than bringing your baby home safely. Plan ahead. Create your birth plan months before your due date, and keep it updated. Have both a printed copy and a digital version ready to share. Document everything and trust yourself. If anything feels uncomfortable or wrong, don’t be afraid to say no. Your voice matters. Being prepared and having a clear plan in place can make all the difference in protecting your health and ensuring the best outcomes for you and your baby.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? I’m still processing everything I went through, even a year later. Writing this has brought me to tears. I don’t know when I’ll feel “OK” again. I’m carrying survivor’s remorse, guilt, and an overwhelming mix of emotions that I’m working through with the help of therapy.

Doctors say it can take up to two years for a mother’s hormones to balance and return to herself after giving birth. But how do you quantify healing from birth trauma?

I don’t know how long it will take me. To every mother who has given birth, experienced trauma during delivery, struggled with infertility, or dreams of becoming a mom one day, I want you to know this: you are not alone. There’s an entire community of mothers ready to be your shoulder to lean on and your support system. She was a beautiful surprise, but my experience giving birth to her put me in a very dark place. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have my tribe.”

Afterward, they moved me to an expensive postpartum floor, continuing to run tests while assigning me a new nurse every day. My chart was changed, and they kept shifting the timeline of how long I’d been “dead.”

Though I heal quickly physically, I know the psychological wounds will take much longer to recover from. I’m still processing everything, even a year later, because experiences like mine remind us why we need to talk about Black maternal health, patient autonomy, and maternal mortality. These conversations aren’t just necessary; they’re urgent.

Please share your thoughts on racial inequalities in healthcare based on your personal experience. Systemic racism is at the root of why Black women are dying during childbirth at rates three times higher than others. For me, it started when the doctor originally scheduled to perform my C-section said he couldn’t because he was working with a new doctor who refused to perform the procedure due to my choice not to use blood. They transferred my medical records to Texas Children's Pavilion for Women, but for an entire month, my file just sat there, untouched. I kept calling, desperate for answers, and all they told me was that I’d be assigned a doctor soon, but it never happened. They only took me in on May 8, the day they decided to take my child.

One story that stuck with me was from one of my nurses, who told me about a Black nurse practitioner who died giving birth in that very hospital six weeks before I was there.

She had her beautiful son, but while the doctor was stitching her up, they noticed a tear, and she started losing blood rapidly. Her doctor called for blood twice, but it never came.

She bled out, right there in the hallway. They didn’t even have enough time to take her to the OR. I later met the father of her baby boy. He told me about that day—how he went from witnessing the birth of his first child to witnessing the unimaginable loss of his son’s mother.

This wasn’t about a lack of resources. It was about pure neglect. Blood is critical for childbirth emergencies, so why wasn’t any available? That nurse didn’t even have a “no blood card” like I did. Understanding Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

ypertrophic cardiomyopathy, also called HCM, is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes, sometimes with no warning signs. It is characterized by the thickening and stiffening of the heart walls, which can impede the heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently since the chambers cannot fill up.

In addition, HCM is the most common inherited heart disease, affecting 1 in 500 people in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association. Because HCM runs in families, first-degree relatives – including parents, siblings and children – should be screened if a family member has been diagnosed.

Consider this information to get a better understanding of this life-altering genetic condition’s symptoms and diagnosis, which can make a crucial difference in managing the disease effectively.

Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms The symptoms and severity of HCM can vary widely among individuals. While some people may experience no symptoms at all, common symptoms include fatigue, fainting, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain and irregular heartbeats, especially during physical activity. Research shows Black male athletes in high-intensity sports like football and basketball may be at higher risk.

The Importance of Family History in Diagnosis Because HCM is a genetic condition, family history is a critical component in its diagnosis. If someone in your family has been diagnosed with HCM, heart failure or cardiac arrest, children, siblings, and parents should be screened for HCM. Genetic testing and echocardiograms are commonly used to catch HCM early. These tests assess the thickness of the heart muscle and observe blood flow, which can indicate the presence of the disease.

There are two main types of HCM – obstructive and non obstructive – and treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of symptoms.

No matter where your summer plans take you, make sure you’re equipped with the knowledge and tools you need for safe, fun days in the sun.

KEEP A FIRST AID KIT ON HAND Include cleansers, wound dressings, bandages and tape; antibiotic ointment; scissors and tweezers; bug bite treatment; and over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers and antihistamines for allergic reactions.

LEARN CPR Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any age. In fact, more than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest outside of the hospital each year, according to the American Heart Association, approximately 40% of which are related to sports.

Immediate CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use can double or even triple someone’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest. For teens and adults, Hands-Only CPR could save their life. For infants and children, CPR with breaths is recommended.

Studies show children as young as 9 years old can learn and retain CPR skills. This summer, there are many learning options available to families, including online CPR courses, local in-person Heartsaver courses, CPR Anytime Training Kits, and CPR kiosks, available in public places and airports across the country.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION More serious heat exhaustion may occur when the body’s temperature rises to 100-102 F and can include an inability to maintain physical activity, dizziness, nausea, dehydration and rapid heart rate. Try to cool down and drink water, but if symptoms worsen or vomiting occurs, seek medical help.

BE SMART AROUND WATER Every day, an average of 10 people of all ages die in the United States from accidental, non-boating related drowning. Always swim with a friend and keep watch. When boating, always wear a life jacket. At home, install fencing at least 4 feet high around pools.

BIKE SAFELY Before heading out, check all riders’ bikes to ensure everything is in good operating condition, including brakes, tires, chains, and gears.

Always wear a helmet and consider guards to protect your knees, elbows and hands in the event of a fall. Most people (66%) actively seek out financial educational content on social media, such as saving and budgeting tips (24%), side hustle inspiration (22%), and advice on reaching long-term financial goals (19%).

WHAT IS FINANCIAL FOMO? Half of Americans (51%) say seeing what others are buying on social media motivates them to spend money due to a fear of missing out.

Here are more findings from the study: • Blockchain buzz: Despite the popularity of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, only around 1 in 10 people (11%) have invested in crypto because of financial FOMO.

Black Homeownership Faces Persistent Barriers Despite Hard-Fought Gains discriminatory housing policies, redlining, and predatory lending practices.

In December 2024, the Black grandmother and former homeless individual became a homeowner in San Leandro, California. But her triumph quickly turned into a nightmare when neighbors began harassing her with racial slurs and vandalizing her property.

“ I worked so hard to finally have a place to call my own, and now I have to fear for my safety in my own home,” Reed said.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating the incidents as hate crimes. For many, vandalism is part of an ongoing pattern where Black homeowners have faced some kind of discrimination. Reed’s experience is far from isolated. Black Americans remain locked in a battle for homeownership, confronted by systemic inequities, economic challenges, and, in some cases, environmental disasters that threaten to strip them of generational wealth.

A new Urban Institute report revealed that Black homeownership rates remain far behind those of white Americans. Researchers said it’s a gap rooted in decades of

The crisis extends beyond acts of overt racism. In January 2025, devastating wildfires tore through Altadena, California, a historically Black community with a homeownership rate of 81.5%—far higher than the national average. Thousands of homes were reduced to ashes and rubble, leaving families displaced. Many now face the daunting task of rebuilding and the looming threat of gentrification.

“ Developers are circling like vultures,” said longtime Altadena resident James Carter. “We’re trying to rebuild, but the fear is that we won’t be able to afford to stay.”

Economic barriers remain a defining struggle. Brooke Scott, a litigation assistant in Los Angeles, calculated that achieving homeownership and financial security requires an annual household income of $300,000—far beyond what many Black families can attain. Housing costs, healthcare, taxes, and child-rearing expenses leave little room for savings or investment.

“ The numbers just don’t add up,” Scott said. “Even

with two incomes, we’re barely able to put away anything for a down payment.”

The Urban Institute’s findings represent a clear picture of the obstacles Black homeowners face. Disparities in income, lending practices, and generational wealth accumulation continue to create barriers that make Black homeownership an increasingly difficult goal. While federal and local initiatives have sought to close the gap, the road ahead remains steep.

“ Without significant policy changes and investment in Black communities, the homeownership gap will persist for generations to come,” the Urban Institute report warns.

For Reed, Scott, and the residents of Altadena, the challenges of Black homeownership are deeply personal.

Whether confronting racial harassment, economic hurdles, or the aftermath of natural disasters, their stories serve as a reminder that the fight for equity in housing is far from over. If these barriers persist, the promise of homeownership will remain an elusive dream for too many Black Americans.

“ We just want what everyone else has—a fair shot at building a future,” Carter asserted.

Here are five common myths about getting devices wet:

The term “waterproof ” is a controversial one – so controversial, in fact, that the Federal Trade Commission has strict rules about using the term in advertising.

It’s better to examine different water resistance standards, such as ingress protection, or IP, ratings and MIL-SPEC, or ISO in the case of watches, and to read the fine print about what those standards actually cover.

Maple Bacon Double Cheeseburgers! by d-mars.com News Provider

e’re in the peak of the summer season, and that can mean only one thing: it’s time to fire up the grill and give the family what they want. Burgers and hot dogs are the all-time favorites when it comes to chilling in the backyard, but these maple bacon double cheeseburgers are a small twist on a classic. The sweet and savoriness of the maple bacon is just enough to excite the palate, but it’s not far enough away from the familiar taste of the grill that everyone will feel like they missed out on a classic barbecue experience. This awesome combination will definitely fly off the summer menu and become a daily staple in your household once the whole gang sinks their teeth into them.

Ingredients to make 6 burgers: • 3 pounds ground beef chuck

• 2 tablespoons ketchup

• Vegetable oil, for the grill

• 2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard

• 12 slices bacon, halved

• 1 teaspoon Louisiana-style hot sauce • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup • Kosher salt • Coarsely ground pepper • 6 sesame hamburger buns, split • 12 slices colby jack cheese • 1/4 cup mayonnaise

• Pickle chips, for topping

Form the ground beef into 12 thin patties, 4 ounces and about 4-1/2 inches wide. Place on a baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up. Preheat a grill to high and lightly oil the grates.

Meanwhile, put the bacon in a large nonstick skillet (it's important to put the bacon in while the pan is cold to allow for even cooking and less curling and burning). Turn the heat to medium and cook, turning occasionally, until browned and crisp, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the bacon to a plate. Pour the drippings into a bowl and reserve.

Return the bacon to the skillet in a single layer. Drizzle with the maple syrup and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon pepper. Cook over medium heat, turning the bacon to coat in the syrup, until glazed, about 1 minute; remove to a plate to cool. Brush the cut sides of the buns with some of the bacon drippings. Mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and hot sauce in a small bowl.

Season the patties with salt and pepper on both sides. (Pro tip: lightly press the middle of the cold patties with your thumb to make a slight depression. This will help avoid shrinkage.) Working in batches, grill the patties until marked on the bottom, 2 minutes, then flip and top each with a slice of cheese. Cover and cook 30 more seconds for medium doneness. Toast the buns on the grill.

Assemble the burgers: Spread the mayonnaise sauce on the buns.

Fill with the pickles, patties (2 per burger) and bacon.
