Business and communication go hand-in-hand. You can’t have a successful business without effective communication.

Most successful business owners and CEOs possess great communication skills. Consider John W. Thompson, CEO of the Microsoft Corporation or Ursula M. Burns, CEO of Xerox Corporation. With so many stereotypes surrounding black-owned businesses already, as a minority business owner, it can make-or-break your business if you are not an effective communicator. This issue’s cover story features Dr. Dana Carson, who has made it part of his mission to effectively communicate his ministry to the younger generation. fter nearly 30 years in ministry, Dr. Dana Carson, senior pastor of The Reflections of Christ’s Kingdom World Outreach International (The R.O.C.K.), and The R.O.C.K. Family are moving their ministry to Houston. The international church headquarters and worship center’s new location will be at 9321 Edgebrook Street. Purchased in October 2013, the more than 71,000-squarefoot church campus sits on more than 11 acres of land. The move to “the Edge” in Houston also brings Dr. Carson’s vision: a 21st Century Kingdom-minded Church.

This vision includes: • Building a Bible-centered, Spiritfilled, Community-building, and Kingdom-minded ministry • Making an intergenerational impartation to children and youth • Identifying, training, and equipping other Kingdom-minded leaders and planting churches worldwide • Developing global churches

• Restoring apostolic order in marriages and families through teaching Kingdom principles • Engaging in global capacity building Dr. Carson tapped into his four areas of academic expertise—MBA, Theology, Organizational Leadership and Psychology/Counseling—and incorporated that into his ministry.

“If a church does not encompass all of these areas, it will become irrelevant,” Dr. Carson said.

As a leading theologian, Dr. Carson knew that God’s vision was designed to address the dire needs of a church that has lost its relevance in post-modernity and lost its purpose theologically. He believes churches in America have become social institutions centered and focused on the

‘isms’ – denominationalism, classism, racism, sexism and materialism – trading in sound biblical teaching for motivational speakers whose teaching is designed to serve the people’s self-centered appetites.

“People attend church for the wrong reasons—bottom line—and have become trapped by tradition within a cultural web of race, culture, class, and denominationalism,” he said.

Ministering to Generation Next Recognizing that reaching today’s youth is vital to the prosperity of any church, Dr. Carson and The R.O.C.K. ministry made every effort to implement aspects that engage the youth into their new headquarters – everything from design and color to a social media ministry.

“If we are going to reach the next generation, we’ll have to reach them with a grace that’s amazing,” Dr. Carson said.

“We’ve integrated technology, contemporary worship, the youth’s hip-hop culture and the arts. One of the greatest skillsets of African Americans is a proclivity to performing arts.”

that engage the church congregation in social media.

The social media area is on stage, built into the sanctuary. Social media is a part of the worship service. People can text, tweet, and Facebook about the ministry. Selected tweets and quotes will show up on two screens in the pulpit during church service.

The social media team can select questions with corporate value to be answered publicly during church services and other questions can be posted to the website.

There is also live streaming and chat during every church service because The R.O.C.K. is on three continents.

“Live streaming is replacing radio and television in this aspect,” Dr. Carson said.

“This is a new contemporary way to approach doing the ministry. The older people who are attracted to the ministry will be the ones concerned with the younger generation.”

Dr. Carson served as the general contractor and interior designer for The R.O.C.K. church in Houston, which he describes as a 100% redo. He paid very close attention to décor and the psychology of color aesthetics, which is why the floors and walls of the children’s rooms are all bright colors of lime greens, purples and yellows, for example.

“We want the kids to be alive, alert, active and stimulated. We need all those

colors to do that,” he said. “The colors in the young adult facilities are not as bright as the colors in the children’s rooms, but they will stimulate the teenagers. Everything from the décor to furniture will make them feel like young adults, not children.”

Facilities for Every Occasion The R.O.C.K.’s new headquarters at “the Edge” in Houston will provide numerous ministry services and opportunities. 24-hour online streaming Kingdom network and Internet radio station that will reach every inhabitable continent in the world The R.O.C.K.’s Future in Houston Dr. Carson’s ministry has had global success, having planted numerous churches—both nationally and internationally—with his Kingdom-minded vision. Nationally, he planted churches in Austin, Texas; Lake Jackson, Texas; Spring, Texas; Katy, Texas; San Antonio, Texas; Kyle, Texas; St. Paul, Minnesota; Atlanta, Georgia; and Brooklyn, New York. Future churches are planned for Charlotte, North Carolina and Memphis, Tennessee in 2015. What Dr. Carson plans to bring to “the Edge” is creative and innovative, but requires the next generation to continue.

“They have to understand how you handle a budget, how you raise a budget and how you manage your resources to be able to stay competitive in the market,” he said. “Our competition today is not church; it’s the businesses in the world that grab the attention of Generation Next.”

The Kingdom Bible Institute, which will also be housed on-campus at “the Edge,” is part of a long-term dream Dr. Carson had since the 80s. He found that one of the challenges for African American church leaders is that, by vocation, most are pastors and don’t have the opportunity to access seminary or Bible college. God gave him the desire to bring the seminary to the church.

The R.O.C.K. offers two different programs: 1) The Kingdom Bible Institute – an on-campus program focusing on Kingdom-based theology, classes begin in September 2014; and 2) The Kingdom School of Ministry – an online program focused on more formal theology.

“To have the opportunity to bring a sound theological program to the church campus for men and women really excites me and it’s a dream come true,” he said. “A lot of women are called to the ministry, but they don’t get the opportunity to prepare because there is this unspoken bias about women ministers. So a lot of times, there are a lot of females who want to prepare for ministry, but feel as though it is a male-driven world.”

Dr. Carson and The R.O.C.K. will be celebrating the grand opening of its international headquarters April 27May 3, 2014 with a week of evening services, featuring some of Houston’s finest anointed vessels of God. The week preceding The R.O.C.K.’s Grand Opening, the church invites everyone out to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ with an authentic Seder meal April 17, led by a Messianic rabbi; 7 Last Words of Christ April 18; Kidz Jamboree April 19; and Resurrection Sunday, April 20 at 10am and 12 noon.

“You know, I stand in awe of God’s magnificence as I look back over the last 10 years and what He was able to do in and through my ministry while located in Alvin, Texas,” Dr. Carson said. “I know without a doubt that Kingdom reformation is a fact and that the sky is the limit here in Houston.”

Thinking About Writing off Social Security?

Not so Fast

ocial Security is a hot topic these days. Unfortunately, many Americans are still in the dark when it comes to planning for Social Security.

And that could have significant consequences.

A recent nationwide omnibus survey of 1,007 adults in the United States shows that despite the constant coverage about the topic, many Americans aren't clearing the information hurdles of Social Security and that could have unfortunate costs, like not receiving the full benefit of Social Security, or missing out on much-needed income later in life. These misconceptions have the potential to lead to sub-optimal retirement strategies and cause individuals to miss out on valuable financial resources.

Those in the path of danger when it comes to the all-too-common fear-based response to Social Security are the very individuals that the program was designed to protect: everyday, average Americans.

The good news is that 71 percent of survey respondents ages 55 and older feel either "very certain" or "optimistic" that Social Security funds will be available to them when they retire. However, the picture looks a bit bleaker to those ages 35 to 54: 39 percent of respondents are "doubtful" that Social Security will be around when they retire, though they are still making it part of their retirement strategy; 19 percent are not including it as a part of their retirement strategy at all.

Finally, of those surveyed who are ages 18 to 34, 39 percent are not including it in their retirement strategy, and 26 percent are including it, but are "doubtful" that Social Security will actually be around.

According to Social Security trustees, enough reserves exist for the system to pay 100 percent of promised benefits until 2033, without further reform. Even if the program pays out lower percentages of benefits after 2033, chances are it will contribute to retirement income at some level for many years into the future.

Americans who stand to maximize Social Security benefits are the ones who take a proactive approach and calculate the impact Social Security can have on a retirement strategy. Unfortunately, Americans are still hesitant to incorporate Social Security into their retirement strategies due to some common misconceptions.

So, what are some of these common misconceptions plaguing the American public?

One Way to Claim?

The stakes are high when it comes to claiming Social Security. The decision you make can have consequences for the rest of your life and potentially impacts the

benefits of your family as well. A myriad of ways to claim Social Security exist, based on things like current and past marital status, disability, employment history and age. These various claiming strategies can make a big difference in a person's bottom line, so making the right type of claim is critical.

Few know about the options when it comes to the many ways to claim Social Security. The Thrivent Financial survey found: • 32 percent of respondents believed that there is only one way to draw Social Security, and that is: claiming benefits on him/herself and the money he/she has paid into the program • 24 percent said they could claim a couple of ways, and they are confident that they know what those ways are • 32 percent said they know there are a couple of different ways to claim, but they have no idea what those are • 12 percent of respondents identified that a myriad of ways to claim Social Security exist "Talking with someone who can help figure out the best time and method to file and claim Social Security is important for a solid financial future," said Patrick Egan, a retirement spokesperson with Thrivent Financial. "Tools exist that help simulate Social Security scenarios to more accurately estimate the benefit people can receive and how it can play into an overall strategy."

The Early Bird Doesn't Get the Whole Worm One of the biggest misconceptions about Social Security is that no matter when a person decides to claim, the

monthly benefit amount is the same.

Many don't know that waiting to claim Social Security can be rewarding. Most people know that individuals can start receiving Social Security benefits at age 62, but few understand that those who start receiving benefits at 62 will get less per month than if they waited until full retirement age. Full retirement age is 66 for persons born from 1943 to 1954; it increases by two months each year for those born from 1955 to 1959; it's 67 for persons born in 1960 or later. If individuals hold off until age 70, the monthly benefit will grow even more.

When survey respondents were asked when they think they will claim Social Security: • 32 percent said as soon as they are eligible • 17 percent said they will delay as long as possible • 18 percent said they will claim when they will receive 100 percent of the benefit • 33 percent don't know Of the respondents ages 55 and older, 50 percent said they would claim as soon as they were eligible; only 17 percent would wait until they would receive 100 percent of the benefit (18 percent didn't know when they would claim and 15 percent said they would wait as long as possible.)

A Helpful Hand; A Listening Ear With all of the information floating around about Social Security, one starts to wonder where individuals are turning for information. Survey participants identified that: • 36 percent get Social Security in-

formation from the government website (ssa.gov) • 14 percent get Social Security information from his/her spouse, family or friends • 9 percent get Social Security information from the media • 5 percent get Social Security information from a financial advisor • 36 percent said that they don't get information about Social Security at all When it comes to incorporating Social Security income into a financial strategy, only 14 percent of respondents said that they had discussed it with their financial advisor; 30 percent had not, and 5 percent had discussed it indirectly. Fifty-one percent disclosed that they did not have a financial advisor at the time of the survey.

"It is concerning that only 14 percent of individuals have directly discussed with a financial advisor the role Social Security will play in their retirement," said Egan.

"Regardless of age, it is never too soon to start identifying various streams of retirement income and the part they may play in your future."

Planning for the Future Social Security has developed a bit of a bad reputation over the past decade, but for the foreseeable future, it is expected to remain a reliable financial resource. If individuals don't take all income streams into account while planning for retirement, they may miss out on valuable options to make a financial strategy even stronger. Taking the time in the shortterm to learn more about how Social Security can influence a retirement plan can have big long-term implications.

he number one problem small businesses have when it comes to growth is deficient access to capital. Acquiring capital for your small business is a process, sometimes, a technical process that can dehumanize the experience for some entrepreneurs.

Traditional Capital Acquisition Traditionally, financial institutions will not take into account why you started your business, the social impact your idea may have, or your level of passion (albeit, passion is not a safe gauge for risk and potential success). Bank and credit union underwriters simply want the facts about your credit, capacity and credibility when calculating their risk tolerance.

This traditional lending experience has

often left some entrepreneurs out in the cold and unable to acquire the capital needed, thus leaving some ideas on the shelf, stagnating growth, limiting the development of new jobs and dampening innovation in some markets.

All that is changing. There is a shift happening based on new technologies, changing federal regulations and new investment models that offer alternative funding options to entrepreneurs that may have never had access to traditional capital or massive potential investor populations until now.

• P2P Lending – peer-to-peer lending is the non-traditional practice of raising capital through loan funds from unrelated peers outside of a traditional financial institution • Program Related Investment – investments made by foundations to support social activities that involve potential return of capital within a given timeframe; PRIs can be a combination of funding options such as bank loans, loan guarantees, linked deposits and equity investments in commercial ventures for charitable purposes Alternative funding sources are growing in popularity due to demand for options; and with new regulations surfacing, the supply is stepping up to meet the challenge and reap the financial and social rewards.

Potential Investors Recently, experts at the Impact Texas Summit held in Austin, Texas shared new ways private and charitable foundations are helping to fund for-profit social ventures. “If we can help small businesses grow, it will create jobs for people and often address many social and environmental challenges some face,” said Randall Kempner, Executive Director of the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs. Motivational Moment w/ JW – Effective Communication

any of us are familiar with the old adage that states, “Conversation rules the nation” and nothing can be further from the truth. The reality is that most of us, if we are truly being honest with ourselves, have not mastered the skill of Effective Communication. We have picked up the bad habit of active listening, which is listening to respond or defend versus to understand. One of my

mentors, Bishop Thomas Dexter Jakes says, “The biggest illusion about communication is that it actually took place.”

Authentic communication has only taken place when action follows. Most people have thousands of conversations daily but never actually effectively communicate, which can lead to many challenges. People tell us all the time what it is they want from us. There is a wisdom principle that teaches that in all our getting, get an understanding. Well in order to gain an understanding, we must first listen.

One of the philosophies that have served me well in my personal and professional life has been understanding that the less you say the more you make – more time, more money, more success, more relationships, and the list goes on.

If we are truly ready to make quantum leaps in developing winning relationships we must master the principle of effective communication. I have discovered three categories of communication: 1. When you are communicating TO someone 2. When you are communicating FOR someone 3. When you are communicating WITH someone There are also three components to the communication triangle. First is Technical Knowledge – this is what most people invest the majority of their time doing under the assumption that it is the most important, when in fact it is the least important. Technical knowledge represents

about 5% of the communication triangle.

It’s simple – people really don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Second, 25% is External Communication, or how we communicate with others. How are your people skills? I love what Dr. Maya Angelou says, “People may forget what you did, they may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” When communicating with others, always imagine that they have on a shirt with flashing neon lights saying “please make me feel important!” That’s a great way to keep the main thing the main thing.

Lastly, coming in at 70% is Internal Communication, or the things we say to ourselves. This is the most important and critical to master of the three. After coaching and mentoring tens of thousands of professionals from more than 15 countries, I’ve learned first-hand that the majority of people really have a negative

and disempowering belief about themselves. This is unfortunate, but very true.

This disconnect paralyzes their will to pursue their dreams and goals, and as a result they fall short in reaching the apex of any meaningful relationship – personal or professional. MIT conducted a study many years ago that suggests for every negative thing a person hears about themselves, it will take hearing something positive 17 different times to neutralize the harmful effects caused by just one negative word, statement, phrase or experience. Based on your environment, upbringing and decisions in life, I believe it’s fair to say for many people it’s going to take millions of positives to neutralize the negatives! One thing I do during my teachings with clients is the mirror test. It’s the most nerve-racking yet effective test to do to jumpstart, restart or boost your self-esteem. Here’s what you do: stand in the mirror, look yourself in the eyes, and say “I AM GOOD ENOUGH” 17 times. Sounds weird, but mark my word – it is extremely effective, taking you on an emotional journey ending in a very peaceful and self-assured place.

The real work is learning to effectively communicate with a very special person – you. Then you can do the same with others. It’s an art that once mastered, could really position you for quantum leaps in all aspects of your life. hether you are in the working world or in college, today’s technology—email, smart phones, tablets and a myriad of social media channels—make it easy to stay connected 24 hours a day. But staying connected can sometimes pose challenges when it comes to effective communications. Lost is the ability to experience first-hand a person’s body language and tone in the collaboration process, while the use of 140 characters and texting gives “lost in translation” a whole new meaning.

Some may wonder if electronic communications, designed to help us, is actually creating barriers to successful collaboration and communication. A recent survey from University of Phoenix found 35 percent of working adults think that emails, instant messaging and other electronic communications have reduced their opportunity for face-to-face interaction with co-workers.

Whether in a team environment or one-on-one collaboration, a business setting or as part of an education learning team, it is important to remember how you communicate can make all the difference. Here are a few tips to communicate effectively: 1. Be as clear and concise as possible when communicating. To be productive in meetings, start off with the most important point at the beginning of any meeting to make

sure everyone walks away with a consensus on next steps and help align mutual focus.

2. Take the extra effort to make business conversation personal to the point that what you are saying relates to the person. If one can make a personal connection to a business topic, then they are more likely to invest more thought and effort into the desired outcome.

Lastly, feedback – both positive and negative – is important. It’s also important to remember that in both the classroom and business setting, nobody should be afraid of negative, or constructive, feedback.

Feedback is meant to help improve the outcome of a situation.

With all that being said, communication is important. Having an open mind and being willing to put in the extra effort to ensure everyone is on the same page can greatly impact success overall. Spending the extra time to ensure that nothing gets “lost in translation” will benefit the future outcome of most situations, and can yield higher team efficiency and productivity overall.

Dealing with Negative People

an you recall the last time you had to deal with a negative and/ or difficult person? Or the last time someone said something with the intention of hurting you? How did you handle it? What was the result? What can you do in the future to get through these situations without losing your cool?

No matter where you go, you will face people who are negative, people who oppose your ideas, people who tick you off or people who simply do not like you.

During the course of your life you will meet thousands of people, so the chance of someone not liking you is great! Confrontation is the one thing that can trigger your emotions and drive you to an animalistic survival instinct: react-attack, kill or be killed.

In these instinctual moments, you may become absent of intellectual understanding and default to acting like an animal that innately reacts when threatened.

However, you are created with the intellect and ability to control your emotions.

So how do you accomplish that?

Holding Grudges The old adage is true: “Holding a grudge against someone is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” The only person you hurt is yourself. When you react to negativity, you instantly rob yourself of the peace, joy and happiness that you deserve.

It’s Not Your Problem I’ve learned that when people are rude, shrewd and negative towards you, it is a by-product of what’s going on within them and expressed externally. You just happen to be the unfortunate person on the receiving end of their problem. Simply said – Misery loves company.

It’s sad, but people will go out of their way to bring you a purposed, hurtful and negative comment to see if you will respond in the same manner. In doing so, they can embrace a pseudo satisfaction in believing that everyone is just like them.

Defuse The Situation Nothing good comes out of reacting negatively against someone who is negative. It will only add fuel to a potentially explosive situation. When you respond impulsively, you only create negative energy and empower the negative person who’s trying to bring you into their state of negativity.

Negativity Is Toxic

Once you allow negativity in one area of your life, it starts to subtly bleed into other areas as well. When you are in a negative state or holding a grudge against someone, you don’t feel very good. You begin to carry that energy with you throughout the entire day. When you allow negativity to take root within yourself, it becomes toxic and many times leads to physical discomfort. It will also cause you to lose sight of clarity and you may negatively react unconsciously to situations in other areas of your life unnecessarily.

How Should You React?

I must admit, I’ve had more than my share of dealing with negative people.

Every day, I find myself constraining my thoughts and reactions to negativity.

When I’m not on my game, I default to a defensive position that usually worsens the situation.

At the end of the day, I’m reminded that we all are people flesh that harbors fickle emotions and huge egos. Nevertheless, by keeping your ego in-check by subscribing to emotional intelligence, you’ll not only protect your health and mental space, but also defuse a situation traveling from bad to worse.

Here’s what I practice when dealing with negative people: Forgiveness What would Jesus do if someone treated Him in a mean manner? He would most likely forgive. Remember, at the core of our flesh we are rotten, that’s why it’s natural (human) to have the urge to react and attack. Before you react, ask yourself, “Have I done anything to this person to make him/her treat me this way?” Whether you have or not, seek to understand and forgive.

Wait and Process I, like most people, feel compelled to instantly gravitate to a posture of defense.

I’ve learned the hard way that emotional knee-jerk responses, text messages, emails or phone calls never get the right result; they only add gasoline to the fire.

Coach Terrul Henderson, Houston’s renowned basketball coach, trainer and charter school athletic director, has demonstrated to me much wisdom when he often says “Doc, I’ve been processing this situation…I need you to process this.”

The importance of processing before reacting is that it allows you to cool off, calm down and not speak or react hastily. Write your emotionally governed thoughts down, just place them aside and revisit them after you’ve thoroughly processed the situation.

It Doesn’t Matter Who’s Right or Wrong Simply said, a person usually responds with the intention of defending his/her position. If you find yourself arguing over being right, ask yourself, “What does this situation has to do with the price of eggs?”

In other words, is this going to kill me if I don’t win my argument? If not, then ask yourself, “Why do I need to be right?”

Say Nothing There is a Russian proverb that says, “When in doubt, do nothing.” When people purpose themselves to bring negativity to your front door, they are trying to provoke you to a level of negativity wherein they reside. When you react in word or action, you are only giving them what they want. The intention of negative-minded people can be defused when you listen, look and say nothing! Ask yourself this question, “If I don’t respond, what is the worst thing that can happen?”

Use Honey, Not Salt Four years ago, I visited Fallbrook Church; at the conclusion of the service, Pastor Michael Pender along with several greeters gave me a bottle of honey as a token of appreciation for visiting. Huh? A

bottle of honey – this was a very atypical gift that I’d ever received for visiting a church. However, in Psalms 119:103, the Psalter speaks of the word of God as being sweet like honey. Parenthetically, using words of honey rather than salt can serve well in defusing conversations of negativity.

Honey Words catch negative people off guard when they’re trying to rob you of your peace and joy. Purpose to compliment negative people for even the small things you notice they do well. Go out of your way to tell them how you’ve learned something beneficial from them. Be honest and sincere when you do this. I know for some you might have to search far and wide to find something positive about a person when negativity is embedded deep at the core of their being.

Delete Negative People From Life’s Hard Drive No beating around the bush on this one. Some people simple choose to be negative; they love negativity and take great pleasure in hurting others with it.

Not often do you find a person who loves being negative, but they do exist. Negative-minded people will bring you down emotionally, and their intent is to steal your joy and have you take residency with them in the hotel of negativity. Negative people, like alcoholics, love to drink their poison with others. Don’t waste your time with a connoisseur of negativity. Unless you have a higher calling to a stubbornwilled and committed negative person, I encourage you to cut them off!

What I mean by ‘cutting them off’ is to avoid interaction with them whenever possible. Remember, you and you alone have the power of choice. Choose your circle of influence that possess the attributes you can download into your life: people who are joyful, positive, sensitive, kind, peaceful and dream motivators.

“Got People Potential?”

athe Kollwitz once wrote, “I do not want to die...until I have faithfully made the most of my talent and cultivated the seed that was placed in me until the last small twig has grown.”

A writer of InspireMe wrote: “This is a beautiful image—I love the idea that each of us was born with a seed inside of us that will grow into a full tree, beautiful and amazing, if only we provide it with conditions that will allow it to grow. And what are those conditions? Simply this: using the talents, abilities, and gifts that we were provided with in order to contribute something to the world, in order to give something in just the right measure, in ways that only we can contribute. If we do so, then we grow, learn, and develop

those gifts so that they are even more beneficial to the other people who inhabit this planet with us. One day we all will die. That is okay with me. But as many people have said throughout history, we do not want to die knowing that we have never lived.”

What we need to do is first, be aware of what our talents are and second, make strategic efforts to use these talents to maximize our impact in the world. We do not have to change the world with them but we can add value to someone’s life and catalyze his or her contributions in a big and better way. The Bible says, “Blessed is the (wo)man that doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, stands in the pathway of the sinners, or sits with scoffers.

For his(er) delights are in the law of the Lord and in His law, (s)he meditates every day and every night. (S)He is like a tree planted by rivers of waters, which leaves never wither and branches bear fruit in all seasons, and whatever (s)he does in Jesus Christ’s name, (s)he shall prosper.”

Someday I would like to see myself as the tree outlined in the scripture above, providing precious shade, shelter, and sustenance to those who would benefit from these provisions. You see, a tree produces fruit not for itself, but for someone else.

Sometimes the fruit falls to the ground to make it easily accessible while other times

the branches stretch high above the sky to instigate an effort on behalf of the one seeking to indulge its provisions. In either case, I would like to provide a beautiful show throughout the seasons because the tree that we grow today can bless someone tomorrow and in the years to come.

We have to remember there are only two types of people on the planet, those who add value or those who subtract it.

Ask yourself the following questions: • How do I contribute to the process of growth for the seed that was placed in me?

• What are the possible results of neglecting my seed?

• What can you do at this moment to help my seed thrive?

• Am I helping others discover, cultivate, and harvest their seeds?

Philosopher-poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said, “Treat a man as he appears to be and you make him worse. But treat a man as if he already was what he potentially could be, and you make him what he should be.” Think about the people who have made a difference in your life: the teacher who made you believe you could achieve; the boss who gave you a chance to show that you could do it; the counselor who let you know you had what it takes to change and have a

better life; the man or woman who loved you enough to say, “I do.” Not only were they there at pivotal times, in many cases they probably created those pivotal times in your life.

At the end of the day, we may plant the seed, and we may water the seed, but it is God who causes the increase. Promotion does not come from the east, south, or west but it comes from the Lord. Don’t forget that at the end of our journey it is what remains above the soil that matters the most to those who are left behind. If you have not planted your seed or have been neglecting it, you can’t be mad because it hasn’t grown to a tree, full of life, abundance and splendor! According to the Maxwell Daily Reader: “In almost every instance where the impact was positive, the person believed in you. He or she probably saw something in you that perhaps you didn’t even see in yourself. Wouldn’t you like to be that person to others? If the answer is yes, then try to love others and see them as 10s. If you have a family, start with your spouse and your kids.

And then broaden the circle from there.

Believe the best in others, and you will bring out their best.”

Are You Sabotaging Your Own Financial Success? PART 2

ast month I wrote Part 1 of this article asking if you were sabotaging your own financial success with the decisions that you are currently making. I said in Part 1 that by not saving a portion of your income you are sabotaging your own financial success and setting yourself up for failure. Now I want to share an example of what I mean by your decisions sabotaging your success.

Several months ago, I was having a conversation with a friend regarding the decisions that people make about their finances. My friend asked what I thought was the cause for people continuing to make bad financial decisions. My response was that sometimes we do things that sabotage our success and don’t realize it. Most of the time the decisions that we make are based on our past and we continue to sabotage our success with those bad decisions from our past.

There is a story about some monkeys that were housed in a facility; hanging

from the ceiling were a bunch of bananas, and there was a pole from the ground that led to the bananas. Naturally, the monkeys wanted the bananas, so every time one of the monkeys tried to climb the pole to get the bananas a water hose would turn on and wash the climbing monkey down. This happened every time a monkey tried to climb the pole. Soon, whenever a monkey would try to climb the pole, the other monkeys would grab him to keep him from climbing so that the hose wouldn’t wash him down.

Every so often, some of the monkeys were replaced with new monkeys. Of course, the new monkey wanted to climb the pole to get the bananas and the older monkeys would grab him to keep the new monkey from being washed down. Soon all of the original monkeys were replaced with new monkeys. In other words none of the original monkeys that actually witnessed the hose washing a monkey off the poll were left in the facility. The only thing these monkeys knew was that whenever a monkey tried to climb the pole they had to stop him. None of the monkeys really knew why, they just had to stop them.

I told this story to make the point that sometimes we do things because that is what we have always done and we don’t even know why. For instance, during a seminar I will often ask the question, “who has a $250 or $500 deductible on their car insurance?” and several people will raise their hand. I will then ask them “why not have a $1,000 deductible?” The response varies, but for most people they say that they don’t want to have to pay $1,000 if I they are in an accident. Some will even say it is because they don’t have $1,000.

This is what I mean when I say your habits are sabotaging your financial success. I recently had a conversation with my insurance agent about my policy and policies in general. The way it works is the more risk you are willing to absorb, then the less you pay. In other words, the higher your deductible, the less you pay in monthly premiums. My agent and I played with the numbers and we determined that by having a higher deductible on our auto policy, my wife and I were saving more than $342 per year. Throughout a 10-year period, that number reaches more than $3,420. Imagine how your life would be different if you had an extra $3,000 that you had saved over the years.

Insurance companies spend thousands of dollars in actuary calculations to determine the probability of you getting in an accident to determine your monthly premium. Therefore, my question is, “why not take advantage of their work, pay less money monthly, and save the difference?”

By keeping a lower deductible on your insurance policies, you are saying, “Because I refuse to save $1,000 and raise my deductible, I would rather continue to over pay for my insurance.” I know that may seem a little over the top, but it is reality and the truth.

Now that you have read this article, it’s time to do an inventory of your financial habits to see if you are sabotaging your financial success with the habits that you have created over the years.

The reality of the market is that inventory is low, which has led to slower sales volume and home prices reached highest levels ever recorded in Houston for January. The biggest challenge to cracking the housing market for first-time buyers is that in much of the country, home prices are rising faster than incomes.

In December, 47 percent of U.S. purchases were paid for with cash, up from 27 percent a year earlier and the highest level in data going back to at least 2005, according to a recent report by Black Knight Financial Services.

The Federal Housing Administration, the biggest source of financing for firsttime buyers, has raised the cost of borrowing and tightened underwriting to cope with losses on mortgages it insured as the property bubble burst. Lenders are requiring higher FICO scores, which can disproportionally impact first-time borrowers with short or bad credit histories.

Although the gap between renting

and buying is narrowing across the U.S., homeownership is still 45 percent cheaper than renting. Homeownership remains cheaper than renting nationally and in all of the 100 largest metro areas. Housing will be “recovering” for some time – Home prices may have bottomed in early 2013, but we’ve still got a long way to go before we reach 2006’s inflation-adjusted peak.

What does that mean for consumers?

Hopefully these following five tips can help a buyer purchase a home in this tough market.

1. Work with a great agent from the start.

Ultimately, you want an agent who knows exactly what is going on in the local real estate market, so they can help you put together a competitive offer. A good negotiator will try to get information from the listing agent on what terms are most important to the seller. This allows the potential buyer to construct an offer most suitable to the seller’s needs/ wants.

2. Be prepared.

Be prepared with financial documentation ready to support your offer if you are paying cash or obtaining financing. This is critical before you start your home search, as time is of the essence. Pre-approval or proof of funds need to be available at a moment’s notice and is expected, not optional. In addition, offering a reasonable amount of earnest money demonstrates to the seller that you are serious, so be prepared by having that money set aside.

3. Maintain Realistic Expectations.

You want to position yourself by presenting a competitive offer, especially in a market where you are likely to encounter a multiple offer situation. Knowing what you are willing to do in advance will make it easier to make decisions when the timing demands it.

4. Keep it Simple, Be Flexible and Play Nice.

Find out which contingencies are customary and keep them to a minimum.

Do not hope for negotiation. Be prepared to offer the highest and best upfront and make it attractive. Also, any flexibility a buyer can offer a seller has the potential to reward them, like a closing or possession date.

5. Personalize.

Enjoy the process, by adding your personal touch to the presentation of the offer. Personal notes from potential buyers can humanize a transaction and tip the scales in your favor.

he more things change – the more they stay the same. 2014 fashions are not changing much; we will still see some of the same trends we did in 2013, so don’t throw anything away when doing Spring Cleaning. In fact, never throw your old or vintage fashions away because you will always see them again – unless something is worn out and can’t be revived. Below are just a few things that will be on the fashion scene this spring, along with some information about appropriate workplace attire.

COLOR TRENDS Orange is the New Black The fiery hue of orange has been spotted all over the spring 2014 ready-to-wear designs, bridal, dressy collections, clothes, bags, and shoes.

The combination of black and white is proving its staying power, while icy pastels and hints of pink are getting into the mix.

Icy Pastels Muted blush, mint green, violet, and blue all walked the runways. This season's shiny satin and shimmery iterations give pastels a fresh feel.

Fashion Designs Besides the colors that have defined the

season, crop tops, sheer details, fringe, and exaggerated silhouettes all made strong statements as well.

White White-on-white ensembles continue to be chic.

Hint of Pink Unexpected pink accents soften spring's athletic and edgy looks.

Metallics Glamorous golds and shimmering silvers add a touch of luxe to the season.

EYE AND NAIL COLORS Color is used as a transformer of moods, ideas and creativity. The color trends for spring/summer will be earthy, sun-baked hues; cool, calm blues; and boldly clashing kaleidoscopes of colors. Anything goes with nail and eye colors!!

WEDDINGS Weddings are becoming ever more enchanting. Wedding coordinators, caterers and floral designers are using creative new ideas in flowers, food, décor and more in the bridal magazines. Employee A was late to a business meeting with an important client. Employee B was on time. The client informs the boss that one employee was late to the meeting. The boss addresses both employees and tells them that whoever arrived late to the meeting would be docked an hour’s pay. “Well, I wasn’t late,” said Employee A. The boss responds, “A hit dog will holler.”

During lunch break at work one day, a group of employees – both male and female – were engaged in a debate about what gender made better managers. The conversation was fairly calm with differing opinions until one woman said men are too insensitive to manage women. Steve, who was sitting at the table, suddenly stood to leave. When Lisa playfully asked him why he was leaving, Steve stated that he didn’t agree with the statement made and wanted to excuse himself from the conversation. “A hit dog will holler,” Lisa said.
