From careers in medicine and music, to politics and finance, this diverse group of honorees is the epitome of empowerment.

Growing up, I was taught by my father how to be a man, but I was taught by my mother the true power and ability of a woman. Every time I host this event, I feel so honored to recognize and celebrate the distinguished women in our city. Our honorees’ impactful work began in their local communities, but through determination and tireless efforts, their influence is now felt all over the world.

Despite the challenges women face in the work field, these honorees have dedicated themselves to building a better community and paving the way for the next generation of women leaders. Dear Honorees, As an immigrant child, I was raised to believe that no barrier was too great, no challenge too difficult, no chasm too wide to overcome. The work ethic my parents instilled in me has guided my professional life through college, law school, and electoral politics. While currently serving my community as a lawmaker in our state’s capitol, I’ve not only followed in the wake of amazing women who have come before me but have also experienced firsthand the transformative power that strong women leaders possess to shape the future of Texas.

Our city’s growth and progress, much like that of our state, is directly attributable to the efforts of women who daily strive in fields as diverse as medicine, public policy, and the corporate boardroom. Nationally, we may finally see the glass ceiling barricading the office of the presidency shatter. As a woman who strives every day to advocate effectively in the public 5th arena on behalf of my constituents, I know that this possibility did not arise in a vacuum but is rather the product of generations of tireless women leaders. Those honored by the 6th Annual Top 30 Influential Women of Houston Awards are the inheritors of that great American legacy.

r. Betty N. Adams is professor and dean of Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing.

In her leadership of 18 years, Dr. Adams has led in the expansion of programs at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral levels. She also tripled enrollment and graduates, appointed a stellar faculty and planned and oversaw the construction of a new nursing facility.

Throughout her career she has promoted the highest quality of nursing education, practice and research and contributed to the building of nursing’s theory and science. Dr. Adams has made significant contribution to health care and higher education by serving as the president of Texas Organization of Baccalaureate 34

and Graduate Nursing Education and two elected terms on the Board of Governors of the National League for Nursing. For the last four consecutive years Dr. Adams has been a member of the Evaluators for Minority Scholarship Selections through the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, which has contributed to the success of minorities receiving financial assistance for doctoral studies in nursing. Dr. Adams has promoted nursing science and policy through her innovation and sincere commitment for

Since her tenure at Prairie View A&M University and the doubling of annual enrollment and graduates, the results are related to the success in program offerings and the appointment of an expert outstanding faculty team, who is adept in student engagement and serving a diverse, heterogeneous student body.

It has been a remarkable experience in the systematic enhancement in the image and ranking of the College of Nursing as illustrated in America’s Best Nursing Schools and Colleges (2015) and NurseJournal.Org (2016): Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing LVN-BSN Program was ranked number two; and, the Family Nurse Practitioner Program was ranked number four in Texas. Also, concomitant with Dr. Adams’ ingenuity, the innovation in philanthropic achievements has greatly influenced and benefitted the expansion of programs and endowments, and most specifically the continued stance of technology holdings in the nursing facility, coupled in application of curricular development, teaching and faculty development and scholarship.

Dr. Adams received her Ph.D. from the University of New Orleans, her Master of Nursing from Emory University in Atlanta, GA and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. She completed a post-doctoral study on Management and Leadership in Higher Education at Harvard University.

Allen holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Education degree from Texas Southern University and a Doctorate of Education in curriculum and instruction from the University of Houston, as well as a certificate in administration and supervision from the University of Houston. Thereafter, Allen continued her career in education Beginning her career in education as a as an adjunct professor at both Texas teacher at Parker Elementary School and Southern University and Prairie View A&M rior to being elected to the Texas House of Representatives, State Representative Dr. Alma A. Allen served on the State Board of Education for over 10 years.

She currently serves as vice chair of the House Committee on Corrections C and is a member of the House Committee on Public Education and the Committee on Public Education-S/C on Educator Quality.

or more than 30 years Merele Yarborough’s passion has been her community service involvement. Her personal proverb is “the strength of one’s commitment gives birth to the realization of another’s dream,” and it has been her catalyst. Through her charitable efforts she has helped raise millions of dollars for community needs and scholarships Yarborough is a native Texan, born in Galveston. She grew up in Tuskegee, Alabama and admits to being a “small town girl at heart”. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing Education from Tuskegee University.

Yarborough likes spending time with her son Leland, daughter in-law, Amy and their two beautiful children Leam and Lily Florence. She was truly blessed to have her mother, Florence, live with her until her passing in September of 2013 at the age of 104. She claims community outreach has played a major role in her life, but God, Family and Friends are most important.

Through the years Yarborough has chaired numerous events, raising millions of dollars for worthy non-profit organizations. Most recently in August 2017 she chaired The Ensemble Theatre gala and helped raise over $400,000. She was honored to chair the 2016 For The Sake Of Art Gala benefiting the University Museum at Texas Southern University, honoring world renowned artist Kermit Oliver and art patron and philanthropist Mrs. Lawrence Marcus. This event raised $200,000 for the museum. For The Sake Of Art is a biannual wearable art competition which celebrates the vibrant talent of emerging artists and designers while highlighting the incomparable permanent collection of African and African American Art at the University Museum at Texas Southern University.

Judge Clarease Rankin Yates Founder, Indestructible Beginnings

Bennett takes great pride in successfully managing 16 branch offices and a staff of nearly 400, collecting $9 Billion yearly in property taxes for 75 taxing jurisdictions, collecting approximately $1.2 Billion yearly in vehicle registrations and is a good steward of the taxpayers’ dollars.

ita P. Bolt serves as vice president and general counsel for the Houston Housing Authority. In this position, she is responsible for all legal matters relating to the Housing Authority, its Board of Commissioners and Administration.

Prior to the Housing Authority, Gita was general counsel for Loyola University New Orleans and Texas Southern University.

She also held the positions of associate general counsel, assistant general counsel, and director of NCAA Compliance in the Department of Athletics, while at TSU. Prior to Texas Southern University, Gita was an Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Attorney General.

Gita is a native Houstonian, who attended Howard University after graduating as salutatorian and an All-American track athlete from M.B. Smiley High School. She graduated from Howard University, cum laude, with a degree in political science and a minor in business administration, where she also competed on the track team and was an Academic All-American. Gita earned her Juris Doctorate degree from Tulane University School of Law, along with a Sports Law Certification. While attending Tulane Law, Gita was honored as the Best Orator of the Southern Region in the Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition.

In 2011 she was selected as one of the Most Powerful and Influential Women of Louisiana by the National Diversity Council.

In May 2012 she was sworn in to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. ouston Metro Transit Authority Police Department is the second largest transit law enforcement agency in Texas. In November 2014, Bumpers was appointed as the first woman Chief of Police at METRO. In this role, Bumpers is responsible for leading approximately 200 special-purpose peace officers and nearly 100 civilian employees. Their purpose is to safeguard METRO, its customers and employees by providing police services throughout METRO’s transportation system, as well as work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies in METRO service area to protect the citizenry of Houston.

Bumpers is a recognized thought leader and sought-out speaker on topics about women and minorities in law enforcement, as well as a concept she created called cooperative urban policing which includes strategies on addressing innate bias, peer accountability and law enforcement responsibility.

arla Cisneros is dedicated to serving her constituents as the City of Houston’s District H City Council Member, representing historic neighborhoods to the north and to the east of downtown Houston.

After returning from Europe promoting and shooting the video for “Ain’t No Living Without You” by Louis Biancaniello and Sam Waters from Color Me Bad, she released “I Surrender” which was then covered by Celine Dion. “I Surrender” was an instant success with Celine, and further drove Griffin’s writing and singing out front with her recording of the song on her album “Purified”, released in 2002. In August 2011 Griffin recorded the theme song “Speed“ with producer Stephen Emmer, along with two other songs for the Cirque du Soleil show “Holiday on Ice“. Griffin recently wrote “City of Love” for “The Horn Dogz” of Paris and covered Aretha Franklin’s “Rock Steady” and performed in a video for the project.

opportunity to purchase her own store in the Houston community. Ironically, the store that she purchased was the store that she initially began her career 15 years earlier.

Smith is now the proud owner of six stores with over 450 employees under her tutelage. Smith is the vice president for the Local Black McDonald’s Owners Association, she is a board member of the Ronald McDonald House of Houston as well as a member of several other McDonald committees and has received numerous awards in her career. Some of her awards from McDonald’s Corporation include 2009 Rookie of the Year, Street Fighter Awards, People Awards and the Outstanding Store Awards. In 2011, she was honored as one of the Top 25 Women of Houston by the Steed Society and was featured in Rolling Out Magazine.

Heidi McDonald Smith Chief of Staff, Texas Southern University

freshmen. She served for 10 years as a professor of education at Lone Star College Montgomery, teaching courses in teacher education and student success.

She was chair of the education department for four years, and under her leadership the Montgomery campus had the highest rate of freshman success outcomes in the Lone Star College System. A passionate advocate of high-quality, early childhood education, Smith owned and operated a child care center in Houston for four years. A New Orleans native, Smith was an elementary school teacher in the New Orleans Public Schools System and an adjunct professor of early childhood education at Delgado Community College.

Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in child development from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, and a Master’s degree in educational administration, planning and social policy from Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Smith is currently pursuing a doctorate in higher education administration from Texas Tech University. Her dissertation topic focuses on women in executive leadership positions at institutions of higher education and their impact on policy and decision making.

eidi McDonald Smith is the chief of staff at Texas Southern University, one of the nation’s largest historically black universities. In her role as chief of staff, she serves as a member of the president’s cabinet and is responsible for the efficient operation of the president’s office. Her role includes managing the budget, scheduling and operating procedures. She coordinates with cabinet members on virtually any matter of interest to the president, 164

She has served on the executive board of KIPP Houston Schools and the board of directors of Collaborative for Children. She has chaired successful fundraisers for Hermann Park Conservancy, Recipe for Success, and Collaborative for Children. She and her husband, Marcus, have two sons - Parker and Bond.
