Dear Prouty Community, My first Prouty was five years ago, before I even started as cancer center director, and I was amazed by the way this community came out to rally around the Cancer Center. I’ve never seen anything like it. And this year’s 40th Prouty was nothing short of extraordinary.

Because of you, we’re able to invest $1 million in our Clinical Trial Accrual Improvement Project, with a goal of doubling clinical trial accruals over the next 3-5 years.

This will allow us to provide our patients with the newest treatments to improve outcomes.

The Prouty means so much to all of us—the clinicians, staff, patients and families—at Dartmouth and Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center. We are all truly grateful for your continued support.

Your support makes so much possible. It allows us to bring clinical trials and multidisciplinary medical teams to this region. It allows us to give compassionate, disease-specific care to our neighbors close to their homes. Your generosity is having a direct impact on the lives of neighbors and friends. I have the most profound gratitude to The Prouty community for making that possible for the last 40 years.

Our world-renowned Cancer Center, one of only 51 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S., is in an unlikely location here in rural New Hampshire. I believe our setting has helped fuel discovery and excellence, resulting in being recognized in the top ten for innovation and for patient experience. We are proud to be able to combine big-city care with small-town compassion. And the only reason we can do that is because of you, our Prouty community.

Prouty funds raised provide seed funding for innovative research projects from the brightest and most innovative minds who are determined to make the next life-saving discovery (page 4). We know that the research we fund today is going to shape how we fight cancer tomorrow.

In addition, our Patient and Family Support Services go beyond what is offered in the hospital—things like art and music therapy, support groups, transportation and grocery assistance, and more (page 7). For many of our patients and their families, these services, which are not covered by insurance, are a lifeline. They are made possible by The Prouty. They are funded directly by you.

Together, in new ways, The Prouty community helped raise more than $4 million for lifesaving cancer research and important patient support services at Dartmouth and Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center.

This record-breaking accomplishment was made possible because of the passionate dedication and steadfast commitment of our participants, corporate partners, volunteers, and donors. We couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you. A very special thank you to The Jack & Dorothy Byrne Foundation, whose leadership support of The Prouty makes a difference in the lives of cancer patients in our community and beyond every day.

Our 40th Prouty was unique—to say the least—and filled with smiles, challenges, successes, tears, laughter, and love. Virtual participation took place over 40 days and we’ve enjoyed hearing about the creativity and planning that went into so many fun virtual Proutys (page 10). We loved seeing many of you who came out and joined us in person for golf, cycling, and walking on July 9-11 (pages 12-15).

FUELING SCIENCE THAT WILL CHANGE THE WORLD Research team paves the way with a $32.7 million award for its study on colorectcal cancer prevention in older adults A research team led by Audrey H. Calderwood, MD, MS, director of the Comprehensive Gastroenterology Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, has been awarded a $32.7 million grant by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). This momentous award will fund a large study focused on the prevention of colon cancer in adults 70 and older.

“This study will have an incredible impact and could simplify colorectal cancer screenings by making them more accessible.” said Director of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Dr. Steven Leach. “Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the country, and Dr. Calderwood’s team is working to help change those statistics.”

Dr. Calderwood received Prouty pilot funding in 2017 and 2019 to launch her novel idea which laid the groundwork for this PCORI grant—one of the largest grants Dartmouth cancer researchers have ever received.

Dr. Calderwood’s study proposal was selected by scientists, patients, care partners, and other stakeholders in a highly competitive review process for a PCORI initiative to support large-scale, high-impact comparative effectiveness research trials in a multiphase format allowing for testing and refinement of the study approach.

“We will gather information on important patient-centered outcomes, including satisfaction with and trust in testing, cancer worry, perceived cancer susceptibility and emotional benefits of surveillance,” said Dr. Calderwood.

“Results will bring meaningful change in the delivery of colorectal cancer prevention for older adults by evaluating a safe and convenient alternative to colonoscopy.”

Thanks to institutional foresight, Dr. Calderwood was one of six members of the first cohort in the DartmouthHitchcock Cancer Faculty Fellows Program, designed through the Cancer Center’s 2018 strategic plan for cancer research career enhancement. The program included a $1 million per year investment to fund 40% protected time over three years to pursue cancer-focused research.

Co-investigators on the study include Douglas J. Robertson, MD, MPH, chief of Gastroenterology at the White River Junction VA, and professor of medicine at TDI, and Karen E. Schifferdecker, PhD, MPH, director of the Center for Program Design and Evaluation at Dartmouth, and associate professor of community and family medicine at TDI. This exciting study that got started with initial Prouty pilot funding, has the potential to fill an important evidence gap relevant to a range of health care decision-makers, help them better access their care options, and save lives.

A conversation with Dr. Audrey H. Calderwood How has Prouty pilot funding impacted your research?

How does seed funding advance cancer research at NCCC?

I am very fortunate and grateful to have benefited from Prouty pilot funding twice. The 2017 pilot funding allowed me to collaborate with experts in qualitative research at Geisel’s Center for Program Design and Evaluation. Our team conducted focus groups of older adults with colon polyps to understand their thoughts and attitudes toward ongoing colonoscopy. With another round of pilot funding in 2019, I worked with experts in patient communication and shared decision making from The Dartmouth Institute’s Co-Production Laboratory to create and test a novel, paperbased conversation aid to help older adults and their providers make a choice about continuing or

WHY WE PROUTY A ride to fill heart and soul

By Jaclynn Rodriguez Like many Prouty participants, Willem Jewett has participated for a long time, always happy to give back and unaware of how personal his experience might become. This year’s 40th Prouty looked quite different for him, and not because of the pandemic—this Prouty he rode as a patient.

Joined by his two daughters, wife, brother, family, and teammates, Willem completed his 100-mile ride on Prouty day.

In the summer of 2020, Willem had a stuffy nose—except it wasn’t just a stuffy nose. In late fall, he was diagnosed with mucosal melanoma, a rare form of cancer. Learning quickly about the expertise that the Norris Cotton Cancer Center has in the field of melanoma, he began care with a specialized team led by Dr. Keisuke Shirai.

“I had said that we would ride ‘cancer pace,’ but we ended up rolling along at a moving pace. I was nicely sheltered at third wheel most of the day, surrounded by my team. For that one day I was thriving, not just surviving,” Willem said. “We love to ride bikes for so many reasons. A bike ride can provide challenge, adventure, exercise, stress relief and so many other things. However, once in a great while you spend a day in the saddle that fills your heart and soul.”

When it came time for The Prouty this year, Willem reached out to his team, Jackalope Northeast Cycling, to start raising vital funds for the Cancer Center. Funds started pouring in, and then began the planning of a

“The Prouty is more than exercise; more than competition; more than challenge. It is about community and support; it is about love,” said Willem. “I want to thank each and every person who supported this event from the bottom of my heart for giving me a day that I will never forget. And a special thanks to Dr. Shirai, who helps make the Cancer Center the special place that it is.”

A WELLNESS APPROACH FOR BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT Enhancing the well-being of patients and care partners throughout the cancer journey

By Kelley Barton and Marne Perreault If you were fortunate to be a virtual audience member in early October at the 11th Annual NCCC Telling Our Stories event, you witnessed the power of complementary healing. Current patients, former patients, those who cared for loved ones, and others bravely read their original poetry, sang a song, or exhibited their artwork all facilitated by the thoughtful instructors of the Creative Arts Program. The Patient and Family Support Services Program at Dartmouth and Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center has long been offering complementary programs like the Creative Arts Program to patients and their families, free of charge, to enhance the well-being of patients and care partners throughout the cancer journey. It endures because of philanthropy, most notably that of the Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center through The Prouty.

In the same twist to this year’s Telling Our Stories, the Patient and Family Support Services team transitioned its programs and support groups to a virtual platform throughout 2021, primarily using Zoom, as a way to preserve connection during the global pandemic.

is a rising area of focus for the Patient and Family Support Services team. Topics such as nutrition and exercise are of particular interest to cancer survivors.

“As a result of moving to a virtual format, we were able to extend the availability of our programs to cancer patients, survivors, and care partners regardless of where they live or received care. All are welcome,” said Andrea.

Creative pivots abounded throughout the pandemic and even included finding a welcome and warm waiting space for our patients’ drivers to and from appointments. When protocols heightened at the Cancer Center for the safety of patients, the Patient and Family Support Services team did not want those key care partners/patient drivers waiting in the cold parking lot during winter months while their loved ones completed their appointment. Team members partnered with the Courtyard Marriott to offer a free off-site, indoor waiting space just a few minutes away in Lebanon, N.H., with internet access and coffee readily available. Prouty support makes it possible to recognize the importance of care partners in a patient’s cancer journey.

Overall, 2021 has seen a 225 percent increase in support group and class participation compared to 2020 because of the added accessibility. While in-person connections are undoubtedly missed, program leaders are delighted by the reach and ease for participants to tap into an array of programming. Virtual programs and classes include creative arts, healthy cooking demonstrations, meditation, yoga, and more. Support groups for patients and care partners continue to run monthly.

What about those patients who have completed treatment? These survivors seek continued touchpoints.

They, too, find information and support through participation in the groups. In fact, Andrea Buccellato, manager of Patient and Family Support Services, says this

Prouty Golf July 9, 2021 The 9th Annual Golf The Prouty featured a full house of golfers despite heavy rain, which, unfortunately, cut the golf outing short. While players returned to the Eastman Golf Links clubhouse soaked, spirits were not dampened! The group gathered for lunch and were treated to an early viewing of The 40th Prouty Celebration Broadcast scheduled to debut the following day. Thank you, Prouty golfers, for kicking off the 40th Annual Prouty weekend—rain or shine!

Prouty Bike July 10, 2021

Hundreds of cyclists gathered at Dewey Field Lot in Hanover—the home of the 2021 in person Prouty—on a clear and sunny Prouty Day! Cyclists of all ages, on road, tandem, and electronic bikes, departed for a 20-mile ride that featured an ’80’s themed SAG in Lyme and a newly paved River Road. In true Prouty tradition, the Panhandlers steel drum band encouraged riders up Chieftain Hill toward the finish line balloon arch where volunteers cheered them back to Dewey Field Lot for a rest and Boloco burrito!

Prouty Walk July 11, 2021 Walkers arrived on a clear Sunday morning ready for a 5k residential walk and found camaraderie in the bustle of walking a single route together.

Families, teams, and individuals of all ages rallied together in a Prouty parade of yellow ribbons, strollers, posters, and pups. Walkers were cheered on as they finished through the balloon arch, returning to Dewey Field Lot to enjoy time together with Domino’s Pizza and Prouty tattoos!

Prouty Volunteers Every facet of The Prouty is supported by volunteers and 2021 was no exception! Eager to lend a hand, more than 130 volunteers assumed their positions helping to plan for The Prouty and throughout Prouty weekend at registration, along routes, at SAGs, cheer stations, the finish line, and more. The Prouty is fortunate and grateful to have such committed, talented volunteers who come back every year to make this event possible.

40th Prouty New Additions In a year when planning for The Prouty was uncertain, new features were added to bring the spirit of The Prouty to as many people as possible no matter what, including: curbside pick-up, our Virtual Wall of Honor, and the 40th Prouty Celebration Broadcast.

Our 40th Prouty Celebration Broadcast united our Prouty community, while featuring our 40 Face of The Prouty honorees and highlighting the great work that The Prouty makes possible at the Cancer Center.
