DIRECTOR’S NOTE When thinking of SpongeBob you most likely think of a silly character who is joyous, loud, and engages in childlike plot. If you’re a parent you may even be cringing at the idea of having to sit through a full SpongeBob episode - let alone one set to music. But wait.... In my countless hours of studying, listening, and embodying what is to be in Bikini Bottom in preparation for this show I discovered there is so much more depth here than I could ever imagine especially from the context of being a believer. This script was not written by believers. There are themes in this show that we needed to address with the cast of how we are going to be doing the show a little different from a believer’s perspective. I would love to share some of those parallels with you so as you view SpongeBob the Musical you too can view from a redemptive lens and see all God can do and the beautiful images He created through using a simple sponge. First of all, starting day one with the cast, we needed to answer the question who does God say we are? We often times believe the lies the enemy tries to get us to believe. That we are unworthy, untalented, no one likes us, why are we here, etc. SpongeBob even believed this lie believing that their title was that of a simple sponge, incapable of what may lie ahead. God had a different plan for SpongeBob and would later get the title of hero. How many times have we not trusted in God’s timing and wanted what we wanted when we wanted it. We may believe the lie that we are a “simple sponge” incapable of all God has set before us but why should we believe that lie when God has called us chosen, loved, valued, heirs, and so much more. Patrick also believes the whispered lies. The sardines place Patrick on a pedestal believing what she says is the right way and that she can save them. We talked about this a lot as a cast but whenever you raise something before God it becomes an idol and idols always fall, they don’t have the same foundation that God has. He is the rock, and although Patrick lives under a rock, she is definitely not someone who would be a strong foundation to base a whole belief on. How many times do we do this like the Sardines? We see that something is bad and want to cling to the first thing that we think will fix it instead of going to God? Patrick turns her back on her friends to live life in the limelight and later realizes she is not a savior. She had a strong community and she abandoned it for the recognition she thought she needed on her own. God designed us to be in community that uplifts one another and works together. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy were able to save the town when they all worked together and ultimately end up bringing the town together. The final theme is how quickly we tend to believe lies and allow sin to creep in. The whole town quickly believes the words of Plankton and his plan to save them even if all signs point to how this isn’t a good idea. It felt easy so they trusted it, instead of listening and pressing in to discern the situation. I know I wrung a lot out of the “sponge” that is SpongeBob the Musical but once you see these themes in this new light, it changes the whole show. There is so much joy in this and joy doesn’t mean happiness. Joy is a gift to believers and is so much deeper than happiness. Joy is what we receive from the Gospel which is when God saved us from our sins and bore them on the cross so we may be in right relationship with Him if we just believe in Him. 7
