Andrea Avery Ray , Director
Andrea is ecstatic to finally, finally be able to collaborate with CYT! Andrea is an actress, a director, a theatre educator, a mother to four children, married the best man on the planet, a huge fan of The Office, charcuterie boards, seeing live theatre, and getting lost in books. Andrea spent some time in Los Angeles where she worked with top casting executives at Fox, Warner Brothers, Disney, Nickelodeon, and Lifetime. Her most notable screen credits are for her portrayal of Gabriella, one of the stepsisters, in Warner Brother’s A Cinderella Story; and as Linda Patterson, the overly excited trombone player, in Forest Whitaker’s film First Daughter. She has since gone on to teach others in DFW the art of acting for the camera and the skills required for success on the stage. Some of her favorite directing credits include Little Women, Annie, Digging Up Dessa, Cinderella, The Humans, Dark Road, The Women of Lockerbie, The Wizard of Oz, and Beauty & the Beast. Andrea is also an advanced acting instructor for Fort Worth Actors Studio, a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild, a published author, and passionate about her role as an anti-trafficking advocate in the fight against modern day slavery. Andrea is beyond grateful to be a part of this Kingdom-minded community of artists who are indeed shining lights in the darkness; and she looks forward to many more shared experiences. She would like to dedicate the run of this show to all those believers who have stood alone, been “banished,” bullied, and silenced when they displayed the courage to share the Truth in unpopular situations. “Courage, dear heart!” - C.S. Lewis

Kate Gesch, Stage Manager
Kate Gesch holds a Bachelor’s degree in Arts Management and Musical Theatre from Eastern Michigan University, where she stage managed for the theatre and dance departments. Her resume includes Studio Manager for Dance Gallery Studio/Peter Sparling Dance Company in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Stage Manager for the Undermain Theatre in Dallas, Texas, and Box Office/Promotions Manager for the Department of Dance and Theatre at University of North Texas. Since joining CYT Dallas in 2016, Kate has served as Managing Director, Stage Manager, Teaching Artist and Camp Director. She directed the MainStage show Alice: A Wonder-full New Musical.
Directing Team

Karah Johnston, Choreographer
Karah has been immersed in the dance and performing arts industry her entire life. She pursued her passion for dance by joining Ballet Magnificat, a full-time professional touring ballet company. From 2002 to 2008, Karah toured with the company, performing nationally and internationally. After retirement in 2008, Karah joined the faculty of Ballet Magnificat until she and her husband felt called to move back to Texas in 2011. Currently, she and her husband work full-time for Gateway Church and have three adorable children. Karah enjoys teaching private ballet lessons and in 2018, had the honor of getting back on the stage performing in Mary Poppins with Gateway Performing Arts. Karah desires that the next generation would know they can glorify the Lord with their talents and that they do not have to compromise their beliefs to pursue their passions! Shout out to the cast and crew of Descendants. I am blown away by your character and love for each other and feel like a proud Mama!! Well done everyone!

Deborah Ivey, Music Director
Deborah Ivey is an experienced performer and arts educator whose voice has been described by critics as “a delicate yet polished soprano.” She has performed leading roles in opera, musical theater, and theater and has also directed in all 3 genres. She joined the roster of the Fort Worth Opera in the late 90s and has been a soprano soloist with numerous symphonies. She holds an M.M. in Opera Performance from the Lamont School of Music in Denver, CO, and a B.A. in Vocal Performance from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. Deborah trained as a stage director under Michael Gorman from the original Broadway cast of A Chorus Line and has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Denver Lyric Opera Award, MTAC Voce Competition, 2nd place at the Los Angeles Liszt Festival and was named Outstanding Fine Arts Graduate by Pepperdine University. She currently teaches private lessons in voice and piano and directs theater on a freelance basis. Home life is full of activity with her husband of 25 years, Roger, and 5 extraordinarily busy kids (2 of whom are CYT-ers!) She is delighted to work with amazing choreographer Karah Johnston and to be reunited with director Andrea Avery Ray for their first CYT mainstage production!
Note From The Director

At first, you might find it hard to see the hope and good in a script that glamorizes the pursuit of evil. I, myself, struggled initially trying to decide if this was a show that I could weave a redemptive quality into, or if it was a lost cause? If you want to know the hard truth, I was shocked that CYT was doing this show at all. But God. As I continued to share my thoughts and ideas with the team, and ultimately made some directing choices, the unwritten-yet-totally-obviousnow Truth became so clear to me. Like a light being turned on in a dark room, I realized this was the story of the struggle that all of humanity faces daily: the constant battle between good and evil.
This show embodies a struggle that even the most mature Christians contend with and the dark forces at work which seek to create a desire in our hearts to adopt an identity created by our own design and emotions. Forces that seek to leave you completely broken. Forces that want to destroy the family. Forces that want to isolate you because the truth is we are better together. This knowledge, of course, is nothing new under the sun, and it’s been an ongoing battle for generation after generation since the Creation. But God.
Descendants was written to target the latest generation, but with the use of a couple of “older” decades, my prayer is that you walk away from the show knowing that not a single generation has been exempt from pain and struggle; that no amount of money or position makes a person invincible to the clever schemes of the enemy; and that no one has to face this life alone. There is nowhere on this earth His compass cannot go. No darkness He cannot overcome. No brokenness He cannot mend. No sin He has not paid for. Take comfort, fellow soldiers and dear friends, even though the battle rages on, the war has already been won.
Right side, or left? Decide today.
No Jesus: No Peace-----------------+--------------Know Jesus: Know Peace
Yours in the fight, Andrea Avery Ray
