rès chers lecteurs et lectrices, Dans cette édition, nous avons souhaité affirmer notre désir de créer des lieux qui marquent, des espaces de vie où l’on ressent quelque chose dès l’arrivée. C’est cette vision que nous mettons en œuvre depuis deux ans avec la transformation du Groupe Machefert.

Dear readers, In this issue, we wanted to reaffirm our desire to create memorable places – living spaces where you feel something the moment you arrive. It is this vision that we have been putting into practice over the last two years through the transformation of the Machefert Group.

À travers le plan « Phénix », nous souhaitions aller à l’essentiel : clarifier notre positionnement, élever notre niveau d’exigence et construire des expériences plus immersives et émotionnelles. Le cap à franchir est simple : monter en gamme et affirmer ce qui rend l’ensemble de nos établissements uniques.

Through the ‘Phoenix’ plan, we wanted to focus on the essentials: clarifying our positioning, raising our standards and creating more immersive and emotional experiences. The goal is simple: to move upmarket and highlight what makes all our establishments unique.

La réouverture du Kube Saint-Tropez et celle de la plage Cybele se sont avérées des moments clés car ce sont les premières réalisations concrètes de ce travail. Dans cette démarche, nous avons tout repensé pour créer des lieux plus justes, plus cohérents, plus élégants afin que nos adresses deviennent des destinations créatives.

Ce que nous lançons aujourd’hui va s’inscrire dans la durée et d’autres projets arrivent, notamment à Paris et à Marrakech. Ma conviction est simple : soit nous créons des lieux qui comptent vraiment, soit nous n’avons aucune raison d’exister.

The reopening of Kube Saint-Tropez and Cybele Beach proved to be key moments, as they were the first tangible results of this work. As part of this process, we have completely reimagined everything to create spaces that are more authentic, more cohesive and more elegant, so that our venues become creative destinations.

What we are launching today is designed to stand the test of time, and further projects are on the way, notably in Paris and Marrakech. My conviction is simple: either we create places that truly matter, or we have no reason to exist.

Une histoire de famille avant tout

A family story above all else

L’aventure commence en 1992 avec Patrick Machefert et Christiane Derory. Entrepreneurs et passionnés, le couple imagine alors une hôtellerie indépendante, à contre-courant de la standardisation. Leur intuition : créer des lieux à taille humaine, porteurs d’une identité forte. Ils introduisent en France le modèle du boutique-hôtel alors émergent, inspiré des premières expériences new-yorkaises des années 1980. C’est un succès.

The adventure began in 1992 with Patrick Machefert and Christiane Derory. Entrepreneurial and passionate, the couple imagined an independent hotel chain that went against the trend of standardization. Their intuition was to create places on a human scale with a strong identity. They introduced the then-emerging boutique hotel model to France, inspired by the first experiences in New York in the 1980s. It was a success.

Dès l’ouverture des premières adresses parisiennes, l’hôtel devient alors bien plus qu’un lieu de séjour : il s’impose comme un lieu de vie. Chaque établissement développe son univers, son énergie, sa clientèle. Cette approche, à la fois familiale et contemporaine, marque durablement l’ADN du groupe. Aujourd’hui implanté à Paris, Saint-Tropez, et Marrakech, Machefert cultive toujours cette liberté de ton et cet esprit créatif qui font sa différence.

From the moment the first Parisian addresses opened, the hotel became much more than a place to stay: it established itself as a place to live. Each establishment developed its own universe, energy, and clientele. This approach, both family-oriented and contemporary, left a lasting mark on the group’s DNA. Now located in Paris, Saint-Tropez, and Marrakech, Machefert continues to cultivate the freedom of expression and creative spirit that set it apart.

En 2022, Kevin Machefert reprend les rênes du groupe fondé par ses parents, assurant la continuité et la pérennité du projet familial. Sous son impulsion, l’héritage familial se prolonge et devient encore plus expérientiel, plus narratif, mais fidèle à l’idée fondatrice : surprendre tout en maintenant sa position de référent du savoir-faire.

In 2022, Kevin Machefert took over the reins of the group founded by his parents, ensuring the continuity and sustainability of the family project. Under his leadership, the family legacy continues and becomes even more experiential and narrative, while remaining faithful to the founding idea: to surprise while maintaining its position as a benchmark for expertise.

Chez Machefert, chaque adresse se raconte aussi dans l’histoire du bâtiment qui l’accueille. Le passé devient ainsi matière à créer, à raconter, à imaginer. Les lieux sont pensés comme des scénographies où architecture, restauration, événements et hospitalité dialoguent. At Machefert, each location also tells the story of the building that houses it. The past thus becomes a source of inspiration for creation, storytelling, and imagination. The locations are designed as settings where architecture, catering, events, and hospitality interact. Rejecting standardization is not a marketing ploy, but a working method that gives each location its own personality.

Avec 16 hôtels, 7 restaurants, 5 bars, 3 speakeasies et une plage, le groupe rassemble aujourd’hui 350 collaborateurs engagés autour d’une même promesse : offrir une expérience singulière et authentique.

Le savoir-recevoir proposé par Machefert repose sur un équilibre délicat, fait d’élégance, de créativité et de générosité, sans jamais surjouer les choses. Votre groupe revendique un “savoirrecevoir» surprenant et unique. Comment cette philosophie s’exprime-t-elle concrètement dans l’expérience client ?

Your group prides itself on a surprising and unique ‘art of hospitality’. How is this philosophy expressed in practice in the customer experience?

À travers nos adresses, nous cherchons avant tout à générer des émotions chez nos clients, parfois même à les surprendre. Nos inspirations vont bien au-delà des codes traditionnels de l’hôtellerie-restauration, que ce soit dans la décoration, l’accueil ou les produits que nous proposons. Pour vous donner un exemple, notre coffee-shop Cesar y Georgette est le seul à proposer une dégustation de café en cinq temps, inspirée de l’univers du vin. C’est d’ailleurs un lieu hybride qui casse les codes de l’hôtellerie classique, puisqu’il fait aussi office de réception pour l’hôtel de La Dépendance. À mon arrivée dans le groupe, j’ai imaginé l’un des premiers bars à mezcal, un alcool traditionnel mexicain, avec l’envie de transmettre une passion pour la culture d’Amérique latine. C’est ainsi qu’est née La Mezcaleria.

Through our venues, we seek above all to evoke emotions in our guests, and sometimes even to surprise them. Our inspiration goes far beyond the traditional codes of the hospitality and catering industry, whether in terms of decor, the welcome we offer or the products we provide. To give you an example, our Cesar y Georgette coffee shop is the only one to offer a five-course coffee tasting, inspired by the world of wine. It is, in fact, a hybrid space that breaks with the conventions of traditional hospitality, as it also serves as the reception area for La Dépendance hotel. When I joined the group, I conceived one of the first bars dedicated to mezcal, a traditional Mexican spirit, driven by a desire to share a passion for Latin American culture. That is how La Mezcaleria came into being.

Aujourd’hui, je souhaite développer une hôtellerie théâtrale et immersive. Je crois profondément à l’entertainment : tout existe déjà, mais l’émotion fait toute la différence. Elle est plus forte qu’une belle décoration ou qu’un plat parfaitement exécuté.

Today, I want to develop a theatrical and immersive hospitality experience. I believe deeply in entertainment: everything already exists, but emotion makes all the difference. It is stronger than a beautiful decor or a perfectly executed dish.

Vos établissements sont pensés comme de véritables lieux de vie. Comment cette philosophie transforme-t-elle la qualité d’un séjour chez Machefert ?

Your establishments are designed as genuine living spaces. How does this philosophy transform the quality of a stay at Machefert?

Notre ADN est celui de l’hôtellerie-boutique, auquel s’ajoute une dimension familiale très forte.

Cela influence directement la manière dont nous concevons le parcours client. Aujourd’hui, les attentes ont évolué : les clients ne recherchent plus seulement une chambre, mais un lieu dans lequel ils peuvent vivre différents moments : travailler, prendre un verre, déjeuner ou simplement créer des souvenirs. Nous nous adaptons à ces usages hybrides en transformant nos rez-de-chaussée en espaces conviviaux. Nos restaurants, bars à vin et coffee-shops sont pensés à la fois pour les locaux et pour les clients de l’hôtel.

Our DNA is that of a boutique hotel, combined with a very strong family ethos. This directly influences the way we design the guest experience.

Today, expectations have changed: guests are no longer just looking for a room, but a place where they can experience different moments: working, having a drink, having lunch or simply creating memories. We are adapting to these hybrid uses by transforming our ground floors into welcoming spaces. Our restaurants, wine bars and coffee shops are designed for both locals and hotel guests.

Entre Paris, Saint-Tropez et Marrakech, comment votre vision s’adapte-t-elle à des cultures et des rythmes de vie très différents ?

Between Paris, Saint-Tropez and Marrakech, how does your vision adapt to such very different cultures and lifestyles?

Le groupe s’organise autour de collections, dans lesquelles sont réparties toutes de nos adresses. Cela nous permet de structurer notre offre tout en conservant une vraie diversité d’expériences. L’un des enjeux majeurs est d’analyser les comportements des clients et de s’y adapter en permanence. Les attentes ne sont pas les mêmes selon les destinations, les saisons ou les cultures.

Nous nous entourons d’experts locaux et de profils complémentaires pour concevoir des expériences pertinentes dans chaque environnement.

The group is organised around collections, across which all our properties are distributed. This allows us to structure our offering whilst maintaining a genuine diversity of experiences. One of the major challenges is analysing guest behaviour and constantly adapting to it. Expectations vary depending on the destination, the season or the culture. We surround ourselves with local experts and complementary profiles to design relevant experiences in each environment.

Selon vous, comment les attentes du voyageur haut de gamme ont-elles évolué ces dernières années, et comment le groupe Machefert y répond-il ?

Aujourd’hui, le voyageur haut de gamme et urbain a accès à tout. Il est donc plus difficile de capter son attention et de le faire revenir. Cela nous oblige à nous différencier en permanence : nous devons proposer des expériences singulières et être capables de marquer les esprits. C’est dans cette logique que nous développons cette idée d’hôtellerie immersive et théâtrale afin d’offrir des instants mémorables.

La créativité et la liberté de ton représentent l’ADN du groupe. Comment entretenez-vous cet esprit tout en garantissant l’excellence opérationnelle ?

La créativité ne peut exister durablement sans structure. Plus on souhaite être libre dans l’expérience, plus il est nécessaire d’avoir des bases solides. Nous encourageons les idées et la prise d’initiative dans nos établissements. Cela repose sur une organisation rigoureuse ainsi que sur des équipes formées avec exigence. La créativité s’exprime côté client, tandis que la rigueur opère en coulisses.

In your opinion, how have the expectations of the high-end traveller evolved in recent years, and how is the Machefert Group responding to them?

Today, the high-end, urban traveller has access to everything. It is therefore more difficult to capture their attention and get them to return. This forces us to constantly differentiate ourselves: we must offer unique experiences and be able to leave a lasting impression. It is with this in mind that we are developing this concept of immersive and theatrical hospitality to offer memorable moments.

Creativity and freedom of expression are at the heart of the group’s DNA. How do you maintain this spirit whilst ensuring operational excellence?

Creativity cannot exist sustainably without structure. The more freedom we seek in the experience, the more essential it is to have a solid foundation. We encourage ideas and initiative in our establishments. This relies on rigorous organisation and teams trained to the highest standards. Creativity is expressed on the guest side, whilst rigour operates behind the scenes.

Quelle est votre ambition pour le groupe dans les prochaines années ?

What are your ambitions for the group over the coming years?

Nous souhaitons faire du groupe Machefert une référence en matière d’adresses expérientielles.

Nous sommes dans une dynamique de développement avec plusieurs ouvertures à Paris, ainsi qu’un projet au Maroc. Nous croyons également beaucoup au potentiel de la montagne, notamment en dehors de la saison hivernale, ainsi qu’à l’hôtellerie de région. Il y a quelques années, il était difficile de trouver des boutique-hôtels de qualité en dehors des grandes villes. Aujourd’hui, l’offre s’est considérablement enrichie.

We want to make the Machefert group a benchmark for experiential destinations. We are in a phase of expansion with several openings in Paris, as well as a project in Morocco. We also strongly believe in the potential of mountain destinations, particularly outside the winter season, as well as regional hotels.

A few years ago, it was difficult to find quality boutique hotels outside major cities. Today, the range of options has expanded considerably.

Plus globalement, l’hôtellerie haut de gamme contemporaine se développe partout dans le monde, y compris dans des destinations auparavant peu exploitées. Notre ambition est de nous inscrire dans cette évolution, tout en conservant une identité forte et différenciante.

Comment l’IA peut-elle être utilisée pour votre développement ?

L’intelligence artificielle doit être envisagée comme un levier au service du client, mais aussi de la performance interne. Il ne s’agit pas de créer une hôtellerie déshumanisée. Notre métier repose avant tout sur l’accueil et la relation humaine, et cela doit rester central. En revanche, l’IA est devenue incontournable pour accompagner notre secteur, notamment sur des sujets comme la cybersécurité, la structuration des données ou encore la formation du personnel.

Le parcours client évolue déjà avec une part croissante de voyageurs qui planifient leurs séjours via ces outils. La question n’est donc plus de savoir s’il faut intégrer l’IA, mais comment le faire sans perdre l’essence du métier. Les acteurs capables d’articuler performance technologique, et exigence humaine auront une réelle longueur d’avance et c’est exactement le défi que l’on s’est fixé chez Machefert.

More broadly, contemporary luxury hospitality is growing worldwide, including in destinations that were previously underdeveloped. Our ambition is to be part of this evolution, whilst maintaining a strong and distinctive identity.

How can AI be used to support your growth?

Artificial intelligence should be seen as a tool to serve the customer, but also to enhance internal performance. It is not about creating a dehumanised hospitality industry. Our business is based above all on hospitality and human interaction, and this must remain central. However, AI has become essential to supporting our sector, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity, data structuring and staff training.

The customer journey is already evolving, with a growing proportion of travellers planning their stays using these tools. The question is therefore no longer whether to integrate AI, but how to do so without losing the essence of the business. Those players capable of combining technological performance with human standards will have a real head start, and that is exactly the challenge we have set ourselves at Machefert.

Tout a commencé par un défi de gentlemen en septembre 1981. À l’époque, Jean Laurain, propriétaire du 12 mètres JI Ikra, et Dick Jayson, à la barre du Swan américain Pride, se lancent un pari amical : une course entre le port de Saint-Tropez et le restaurant du Club 55, à Pampelonne, en contournant la marque de la Nioulargue.

It all began with a gentlemen’s challenge in September 1981. At the time, Jean Laurain, owner of the 12-metre JI Ikra, and Dick Jayson, at the helm of the American Swan Pride, made a friendly wager: a race between the port of Saint-Tropez and the Club 55 restaurant in Pampelonne, rounding the Nioulargue mark.

Ce duel improvisé, remporté par Ikra, donne naissance à la Club 55 Cup et, par extension, à la « Nioulargue ». Pendant quinze ans, ce rassemblement informel et joyeux est devenu le rendez-vous incontournable des plus beaux bateaux du monde.

Après une interruption à la fin des années 90, l’événement renaît en 1999 sous le nom des Voiles de Saint-Tropez, avec la promesse de conserver cet « esprit club » originel : un mélange unique de compétition de haut niveau et de fraternité entre gens de mer.

This impromptu duel, won by Ikra, gave rise to the Club 55 Cup and, by extension, to the ‘Nioulargue’. For fifteen years, this informal and joyful gathering became the unmissable event for the world’s finest yachts. After a hiatus in the late 1990s, the event was revived in 1999 under the name Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, with a commitment to preserving that original ‘club spirit’: a unique blend of top-level competition and camaraderie amongst seafarers.

Aujourd’hui, chaque édition rend hommage à ces pionniers en perpétuant ce goût du défi pur, où l’honneur de franchir la ligne d’arrivée compte autant que le plaisir de partager un verre au port.

Today, each edition pays tribute to these pioneers by perpetuating this taste for pure challenge, where the honour of crossing the finish line counts for just as much as the pleasure of sharing a drink in the harbour.

D’un côté, les Maxis, géants de carbone aux lignes futuristes, fendent l’eau avec une précision chirurgicale. De l’autre, la catégorie Tradition nous fait remonter le temps. Cette année, tous les regards étaient tournés vers la majestueuse goélette Atlantic, réplique fidèle du mythique troismâts de 1903, qui avec ses 64 mètres de long, a rappelé la splendeur de l’âge d’or du yachting.

Imagine more than 250 exceptional sailing yachts unfurling their sails in the golden light of the Var’s Indian summer. The spectacle is breathtaking. On one side, the Maxis—carbon giants with futuristic lines—cut through the water with surgical precision. On the other, the Tradition category takes us back in time. This year, all eyes were on the majestic schooner Atlantic, a faithful replica of the legendary three-masted vessel from 1903, which, at 64 metres long, evoked the splendour of yachting’s golden age.

À mon sens, un service devient mémorable par une prise en charge irréprochable de nos clients dès leur arrivée, c’est vraiment un moment très important qui scelle les bases d’un séjour pour le transformer en véritable expérience. Par la suite, la bienveillance et l’écoute entrent en jeu pour mener à bien chaque étape du séjour.

In my view, a service becomes memorable through impeccable care of our guests from the moment they arrive; this is truly a very important moment that lays the foundations for a stay, transforming it into a genuine experience. Thereafter, kindness and attentiveness come into play to ensure every stage of the stay runs smoothly.

Il y en a beaucoup, je ne pourrais pas toutes vous les citer. Nous organisons souvent des demandes en mariage, des surprises d’anniversaires et même des «gender reveal». Ce sont des évènements dont nos clients se souviendront toute leur vie. Cela nous met beaucoup de pression, par ailleurs, il est très gratifiant pour nous d’avoir leur confiance pour des moments aussi intimes qu’importants.

There are so many, I couldn’t possibly list them all. We often organise marriage proposals, birthday surprises and even ‘gender reveals’. These are events our guests will remember for the rest of their lives. This puts a lot of pressure on us, but it is also very rewarding to have their trust for moments that are as intimate as they are important.

La démonstration reste un point clé du luxe moderne. Cependant, la personnalisation est devenue primordiale pour s’adapter aux besoins de nos clients afin de leur offrir une expérience unique.

Je trouve cette question très pertinente en cette période de renouveau car une nouvelle direction a pris ses fonctions depuis le début de cette année. Elle est composée de M. Frédéric Carbonnel, épaulé par Lloyd James qui sont profondément attachés à la personnalisation du service pour atteindre l’excellence. Après 17 années passées au Kube, je me réjouis de la nouvelle impulsion qu’ils apportent en ce sens. Pour conclure, je dirais donc que le luxe moderne passe par une forte personnalisation du service apporté à la clientèle.

I find this question particularly relevant at this time of renewal, as a new management team took up their posts at the start of this year. A former cellist steeped in classical rigour and heir to a craftsmanship passed down by a grandfather who was a Compagnon du Devoir, Romain Tiercin shapes metal with a rare sensitivity. His sculptures, such as La Vague or La Conquête de l’Air, embody an absolute quest for lightness: he manages to imbue bronze with an organic, almost fluid quality.
