Rematerialising Hybrid
Rotterdam Object
Abstract
In this portfolio, the interest is based on the question of how we see what surround us. The requirement here is to build a deposit for the Boijman museum in Rotterdam, Holland. It starts by the study of an art piece from the collection, to extract a way of thinking. Questioning the concept of a deposit to offer a new experience and understanding the elements that make the city. Those ideas are then merged together, into a building that offers a new perception of those concepts, a new way to see art, deposit and city.

Art piece bruce nauman
6
Bruce Naumann American artist Born in 1944
Analyse This art piece is composed of two pictures, representing the same scene from different points of view. We can see glasses of wine posed on the back of someone’s hands.
Vinno Rosso
By deforming a common scene and showing it from a different view, the artist forces the viewer to project himself in the scene, becoming aware of his own body.
Perception
Body impressions - the mark we left on our environnement. The body in space. Aproach of diversity, of time.
Installations, work on space, on the perception we have of it. Unreal universe, questioning of our usuals.
uncomfortable, un-human spaces. They’re made to be used, but their only function is to put the visitor body in an incomfortable position. In that way, the installation raises the awareness of the visitor, about his body, his own presence and his suroundings.
7
reinterpretation of the art piece scene.
recreating the feeling of tension, uncomfort and expectation by making it a sort of performance.
here, the highlighted is not the body, but the space, the void created by massive solid that is the brick.
It’s only a brick and three pieces of wood, but once put all together, the brick takes a new value
8
Reality Glasses
appropriation of the virtual reality glasses, turning it into deformed reality by the use of a set of mirrors
highlight by changing the common perception.
the concept is to change the vision on the banal, to get the wearer more aware of the space that surrounds him.
Void & expectation
By creating those objects, I tried to explore concepts. In a similar way Bruce Nauman works, I didn’t use the aesthetics of my artefacts to produce architecture, but extruded the ideas of the perception, the highlighting and the void “distilling its colours to their essences”

deposits example
how to have a maximise art pieces and have space for the public to see it
how to offer people culture how to avoid information overload for the viewer
how to prevent people from touching or degrading the art pieces

evolution of the city
Rotterdam
first approach of voids
the city seems to live in the future, composed of a wide variety of architectural objects, of all kinds, function, shape and design
15
void mapping
16
the city happens between all those objects, in the voids created between this is a map of all the spaces accessible for a walking person
this is where the life is, where the accident takes place, the meetings, the gossip, the stories, where the magic of common happen
that’s what is to be highlighted, the unseen magic of common
all those voids are actually full of life, they represent the deposit of the city
17
creating the tower
firstly, the map of the void is scaled and put into the site, oriented north it’s the first approach in changing the perception of the city, by offering a new map scale
a thickness is then given to the map, to highlight the voids, turning them into full thicknesses to receive the art pieces
18
the map is folded in four, to form a tower the part of the map where the tower is doesn’t move
the tower scale is 1/75, and the tower is 75m high which means that one metre in real life is the tower size on the tower’s map the tower becomes a sort of tool to measure the city, its elements, and the human scale in it

deposit accessible deposit
to maximise art pieces and space for the public to see it, all the art pieces are stored in drawers in the wall/facade
it create a distance with the viewer, preventing eventual degradation, and allowing them to see more in the mean time
it tends to change the way we look at art pieces
22
the drawers can be open, and taken out by the use of mechanical arms railed to the core
when not commanded, the arm randomly opens and closes different drawers
it’s ideal to avoid information overload
it also represents the interactivity of the city, how the events happen, making each visit to the building a new experience
23
24
Tower as a public space
Rotterdam is lacking public and green spaces
the tower is ideal to preserve the park space and its vegetation
the building becomes a form of vertical public space

Everything in the void The voids of the city are turned into solids, and contain the spaces and art pieces, as said before. But those solid voids are also full of all the building functions. Spacial, deposit, structural and technical.

From a conceptual approach, the deposit aims to offer new perceptions On the city, what it is, what is a person in it, by situating himself, measuring himself and what surrounds him. On what is a public space On what is a building, by offering a different type of space, another kind of tower, all within the facade On what is a deposit, making it public, giving access to alot of objects , to culture On what is an art piece, and how to look at it.
Everything is questionable. there is always many answers and diverse ways to do, depending on each person or groups thoughts, experience or view. By questioning, and trying to offer other ways to do things, I tryed to give everybody a opportunity to think, pushing for creativity, difference, variety.

Conclusion
During this semester, I learnt a lot. As an Erasmus, I’m out of my comfort zone, pushing me to learn new things, while affirming myself. I believe that’s what I did in this project. I learned a new method, new programs but also different approaches of what is and how to architecture. I used those new ways to push my thoughts.
This project reflects my interests as a designer, I have always been into art, questioning myself and my surroundings. Also I always try to explore new aesthetics, graphics and methods.

Structure
the structure is made of different triangulated webs of steel beams in the facade. they follow the streets
mapping of the structure
the beams are connected to the concrete core, at the junctions of the map’s sides.
58
main beam web. I 400mm/200mm section. the beams follow the mains streets and axes of the map
secondary beam web It covers all the other axes of the city, wearing the concrete prefab facade on the external side and all the technical on the internal side
example of this type of structure, from Herzog Deumeuron Prada building
59
Prefab facade As the facade is not a repetitive pattern, the ideal is the prefab method. It saves time and money.
The exterior is made of fibreglass reinforced concrete, the rain water evacuation, the insulation and the windows are attached to it in the factory.
the prefab facade is then clipped to the structure
60
Drawers
the art pieces are stocked on drawer, placed in the ‘voids of the city’
the drawers are 3500mm long, width and height depends on the facade two types of drawers : for the flat art-pieces/painting/ print and for 3dimentional art-pieces/sculpture/design object
drawers production
drawers are mounted on rails with bearings to ease the movements
drawer head are shaped to help the input
61
Environment
1
1
deposits need a strictly controlled temperature to preserve all the art pieces to achieve that, the building is over insulated, making it passive, with a stack ventilation

2
stack ventilation, the air ducts are in the facade, the outlet is on top of the tower, creating a chimney effect

62
one of the benefit of a tower is the small ground space usage, preserving the park and the trees
the north facade is more open, as it doesn’t get direct sun exposure, allowing more natural light to get in without overheating, and reducing the artificial light consumption
63
Circulation
64
circulation and spaces are in the ‘facade’
in the north-east corner is the concrete core, containing the elevator
the staircases are in the towers corners those are connected together by horizontal circulation
along the circulation are the spaces
65
Lighting
The thickness of the faces prevent most of the sun getting directly into the building, protecting the art piece to direct sun exposure. The thickness and different size of opening create various atmospheres. When the sun is perpendicular to the faces, the building is a lot brighter.
the different spaces created in the ‘facade’ have a thinner wall, making them brighter than the storage wall
the different spaces off the building offer various atmospheres by different light
on top, the social space, luminous, underneath , the war space, darker
66
67
68
the sun orientations offer a variety of perceptions of the building interior
