MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Cypress Woods Members, We hope you all had a wonderful holiday surrounded by friends and family. We are excited to welcome you all back home to Cypress Woods for another amazing season of golf, dining, sports, and friendship.

The Board and Strategic planning committee will host a presentation of the amenities master plan at the Clubhouse on Sunday, January 8th at 5 PM. We will broadcast the presentation live and we will also record it for anybody who is unable to attend on the day. We will have brochures available for members to pick up in the clubhouse, and we will also email all information to members who are not yet down for the season. The Club website will be updated with all pertinent information on the project. The vote for the plan will take place at the annual meeting on March 27 at 10 AM. Thank you to all the Members who contributed to the Gargiulo Children’s Christmas presentHAPPY drive this holiday season.

Almost 100 deserving NEW YEAR children received handpicked Christmas presents from Cypress Woods Members last month. You also made significant contributions to Cancer Alliance of Naples, Harry Chapin Food Bank, and the local VA in 2022. The outpouring of support from Cypress Woods Members was tremendous and a true reflection of the generosity of our membership.

ON THE GREENS FROM THE GOLF PRO

Welcome back! We hope you have had a wonderful holiday season with friends and family. It has been very busy as more members returned early this year and we are excited to welcome everyone back. We have a lot of great events planned for the season and we all look forward to the fun and comradery this season will bring!

To kick off our season, the club will be hosting its first major tournament of the year with the Mixed Member Guest on February 4th - 5th. We will host a cocktail party on the evening of the 4th and have a 1:00 shotgun with dinner and awards to follow on the 5th. There will be limited morning tee times before the event.

Throughout the shoulder season, we have been able to accommodate members who were unable to sign up on time for events and tee times, however, as the club continues to get busier it will be much more difficult to fit in those who forget to sign up. Please keep in mind that if you miss a signup deadline, it is important to understand that this may deter your ability to play, however, we will do our best to work you in.

Regarding course conditions, please be diligent and make a strong effort to help take care of the golf course. To maintain the great course conditions, it is important to use the 90-degree rule while driving on the fairways. Remember to fill divots made on the tee boxes as well on the fairways. As a final reminder, golf carts are not allowed off the cart path on par 3’s. With increased play in season, everyone’s efforts go a long way to help maximize the course conditions.

Lastly, for those members who are new or not familiar with the Chelsea system or if you even need a refresher, please stop in and schedule a quick session. We are always here to help but want to make sure you understand and know how to fully utilize the tee time system heading into season.

Cypress Woods Membership, I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and is looking forward to a Happy New Year in 2023.

We are very excited about the upcoming year and can’t wait to provide you with the best playing conditions.

We have been busy throughout the summer and into the early winter months in preparation. All course plants have been trimmed throughout the golf course, and grasses. Fresh pine straw has been laid down throughout the golf course in all landscape beds and areas around trees. The pine straw makes a great contrast to the grass and enhances the aesthetics of the golf course tremendously. Our bridges have all been pressure washed to protect the wood and give a clean appearance. All bunkers have had sand added and dispersed evenly for optimal playability. This month we will start working on some winter projects, such as pruning up limbs, taking a few dead trees down, continuing with our clearing of some wooded areas, and keeping things nice and neat through the winter months. When you play golf this time of year, remember the grass is not actively growing. Please help us by taking different routes with your carts and repairing divots and ball marks. Thank You! We look forward to providing excellent playing conditions and meeting and exceeding your expectations. Please be safe and enjoy your 2023 season.

ON THE GREENS FROM THE CWLNHGA January 2023 Donation News: Jayne Siemert & Sandy Johnson organized the CWLNHGA holiday celebration on December 6 “T’was the Night Before Christmas.” At the luncheon, the league announced their contribution for the Harry Chapin Food Bank Drive. Because of the very generous donations of the CWLNHGA, we were able to raise funds for the Harry Chapin Food Bank which equates to having a value of $40,000 worth of food for every dollar donated. In addition, since hurricane Ian, the food bank has distributed 6 million pounds of food to hurricane victims.

Thank you to Katie Allison for chairing the fundraiser. A check was presented to Lynnea Messina, coordinator at the Harry Chapin Headquarters. We appreciate the continued support and generous contribution by member Greg Schott. Thanks go out to all our donors, including CWLGA & CWMGA.

DINING FROM FOOD & BEVERAGE Dear Cypress Woods Family, The new year is upon us, which means many fun and exciting Member events planned! Kicking off the year will be Thursdays Social Night featuring entertainment by Omar Baker. Member socials are every 1st Thursday of the month with a delicious buffet created by Chef Matthew and his culinary team.

Themed night Thursdays will feature Carver’s Night (1/12), Pasta Night (1/19), and Super Grouper Night (1/26). On the first and last Saturday nights of the month, members can enjoy Tunes on the Terrace, dinner, and cocktails!

January's Dinner Show presents The Britins, a tribute to the Beatles on Saturday January 14th. We can’t forget about Bingo on Monday January 9th and Trivia on Monday January 23rd. Rib night will be on Tuesday evenings and Fish Fry on Fridays for members to enjoy alongside Chefs a la Carte menu. A la Carte menu will also be available on Wednesday evenings and limited Thursday nights.

Don’t forget to make your reservations as they do fill up quickly for the Dining Room and Terrace.

Reservations can be made by calling 239-593-5311. We can accommodate parties of 8 or less for a reservation, any party larger than 8 will be placed on to 2 tables near each other. Some friendly reminders: Please let your guests know about the Club’s dress code, no cargo shorts, no T-shirts, and no blue denim in the Main Dining Room (jeans are allowed in the Grille Room and on the Patio if they are not cut off or have holes). Golf shirts need to be tucked in, just like on the golf course.

DINING CHEF’S CORNER New England Clam Chowder Recipe Make 6-8 Servings

INGREDIENTS • 3 8-ounce cans clam juice • 1 pound russet potatoes, peeled, diced into ½ inch pieces • 2 tablespoons (¼ stick) butter • 3 slices bacon, chopped • 2 cups chopped yellow onions • 1 ¼ cups chopped celery with leaves (about 2 large stalks) • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 1 bay leaf • ¼ cup all-purpose flour, or sub a cornstarch slurry • 6 6 ½ ounce cans chopped clams, drained, juices reserved • 1 ¼ cups half & half • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce

DIRECTIONS 1.

Bring can clam juice and potatoes to boil in heavy large saucepan over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.

2. Melt butter in heavy large pot over medium heat.

Add bacon and cook until bacon begins to brown, about 8 minutes. Add onions, celery, garlic and bay leaf and sauté until vegetables soften, about 6 minutes.

Stir in flour and cook 2 minutes (do not allow flour to brown). Gradually whisk in reserved juices from clams. Add potato mixture, clams, half & half and hot pepper sauce. Simmer chowder 5 minutes to blend flavors, stirring frequently. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Ready to enjoy or refrigerate uncovered until cold, then cover and keep refrigerated. Bring to simmer before serving.

January 21st is National New England Clam Chowder Day! Six Food Finds about Clam Chowder 1. An old French word chaudière, pronounced “chowda”, is a large pot for cooking. This is the likely origin of the word.

2.

New England clam chowder is a milk- or cream-based chowder, commonly made with potatoes, onion, and clams.

Including tomatoes is shunned; a 1939 bill making tomatoes in clam chowder illegal was introduced in the Maine legislature that year.

3. New England clam chowder is usually accompanied with oyster crackers.

4. Herman Melville (1819-1891), American novelist, devoted a whole chapter in his famous 1851 book Moby Dick. He writes of the Try Pots, a chowder house in Nantucket, Mass., which served only cod or clam chowder.

5. Though the period of strict abstinence from meat on Fridays was reduced to Lent, the year-round tradition of serving clam chowder on Fridays remains.

6. In Maine, those living on one side of Penobscot Bay like their clam chowder made with tomatoes, while those living on the other side like it made with milk and no tomatoes.

FINANCIAL FOCUS FROM THE CONTROLLER Happy New Year!

2022 was an incredible year. There was more member usage of the club than ever before.

As we welcome in the new year, there is a lot to be excited for. The accounting department has launched the online payment option to the member statements, which are accessible through the member portal.

The amenities master plan proposal is also being distributed this month. There are brochures, videos, presentations, and committee meetings covering the details of the project, so members can gather all the information necessary to make an informed decision when voting at the annual meeting in March.

The reopening of the terrace has been a huge success. We really appreciate all the positive feedback members have given us, and are looking forward to another wonderful year with all of you!

Tom Porten - I am excited to join Chris Phillips staff this season as one of the assistant golf professionals. I started in late October and have been enjoying the transition from Fargo, North Dakota to SW Florida and Cypress Woods.

A little about me: Born and raised in Northeast Ohio (Cleveland area) starting as a PGA Apprentice Golf Professional but spent most of my career as a Division I Golf Coach for over a quarter century. I began at Cleveland State University then onto nearby Kent State and following a decade as the Director of Golf Operations and Men’s Coach at Northern Illinois University I retired in 2019.

I have a passion for teaching, fitness/wellness and helping people improve. It’s why I decided to get back into the golf industry spending the 2020/21 season at nearby Grey Oaks before heading north to Fargo Country Club as the Director of Instruction. I teach students of all ages and possess a personal training certification, with concentration in speed training for golf.

When I’m not coaching or playing the game, I love to run and have completed 3 marathons over the last two years with many more to come! I’m currently in charge of the Ladies Nine Hole League and having a lot of fun helping make each event successful. I look forward to seeing you all this season, stop by the golf shop and say hello.

Pickleball – Inter-Club Pickleball League play begins 1/3/23. Men’s double teams play on Tuesdays, women’s double teams play on Wednesdays and mixed doubles teams play on Thursdays. Home matches begin at 11:00 am. Stop by the courts and watch your Cypress Woods Teams in action. The schedule for Inter-Club play is posted on the courtside bulletin board. Member teams are put together each week by Team Captains from available players 50+ at the 3.0 and 3.5 skill level. Team Captains are for 2023 are: Beth Uphoff for Mixed 3.5, Gary Faguy for Men 3.0, Patti Price for the Women’s 3.0, Sandy Coots for Women’s 3.5 Team and Patti Price and Monte Mohler for 3.0 mixed.

Round robin play is scheduled Mon - Fri., 8:30 – 10:30 am and for Wednesday Eve 5:30 – 8:00 pm for all levels of play. Players at all skill levels are invited to play round robin. Match play will be arranged for all levels.

The two southwest courts are available for open play Tues, Wed and Thurs 8:30 – 10:30 on a first come first serve basis unless these courts are needed for a round robin group of more than 36 players. Players using these “open” courts are not obligated to participate in round robin play.

Instruction for beginner pickleball players is provided at no charge on Mondays beginning at 9 am. If you plan to attend an instruction session, send an email to Barb Wendt <barbjwendt@gmail.com>.

Beginners – Many of you who have received beginner instruction have expressed reluctance to participate in regular round robin play. The temporary courts are set up for beginner play. Just show up at the temporary courts for play at the beginner level. Players on these court(s) will receive instruction and coaching by an advanced player and you will play pickleball and you will have fun.

Members are reminded that paddles and balls are available at the courts for play at anytime there is no Club event scheduled. A key for the chest containing the equipment is available at the Pro Shop.

Bocce – The Sunday Mixer at 4:00 pm is underway. This event is for all levels of play. Show up and play.

Toby Johnson or his designee will be host and coordinator. Let Toby know if you would like other events scheduled (maybe a ladder list for challenge play).

Bocce sets are available for play at any time when there is no Club event. Equipment is in the chest at the Courts. A key to the chest is available at the Pro Shop.

Tennis – There are no scheduled tennis programs or events at this time. Courts are available for open play.

Members with interest in any tennis activity (including a ladder list) should send an email to Jim Helle hellejim@gmail.com.

Members – Guest players must be registered to play tennis or pickleball before playing. To register guests, the sponsor member shall send an email to <accounting@cypresswoodsgolf.com> stating member’s number, the date of play, number of the guests (max is 3) and whether for tennis or pickleball. A guest fee of $5 per guest will be charged to the Member’s account. Members are on an honor system to register guests. Guests must be accompanied by the member at the courts.

Proper attire is required on the courts – i.e. shorts/skirts and shirts must be worn. A tennis shoe or court shoe is required. Abide by Court Rules posted at the Courts.

Court time can be reserved when there is no Club event scheduled. See the Courtside Bulletin Board for reservation instructions and scheduled events.

Pool – Hours are 7 a.m. - Dusk daily. Poolside service is available from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. All purchases must be made with a Club member present. To ensure all users have an enjoyable experience at our pool complex, please note and follow all posted Pool, Club and Spa Rules.

Fitness Center – Open 24 hours daily. Members and their guests will enjoy a better organized and more user-friendly layout.

In order to protect the privacy of our members and their families, The Club only sends a club wide email with an obituary when the family of the deceased requests we do so.

Rental News

The Cypress Woods Golf & Country Club Master Association Clubhouse Administrative Office requires a completed Rental Application (all questions answered, all signatures required), a copy of the Lease Agreement between Owner and Tenant, and a $275.00 Application Fee submitted at least 30 days before lease start date, otherwise a $100.00 rush processing fee must be added to the $275.00 application fee for those turned in less than 30 days before start date. If opting for the Membership Transfer, please provide that form accompanied by a $300.00 Transfer Fee. Checks can be separate or combined and should be made payable to “Cypress Woods.” Please note that the Membership Transfer includes Golf, access to the Fitness Center, Clubhouse Pool & Spa, tennis and pickleball courts and a merchandise discount in the Pro Shop. Additionally, presenting your Member ID Card in The Grille Room &/or Dining Room helps the Owner toward the owner’s $600 annual Food Minimum. It is important to note that seasonal/part-time tenants DO NOT have member account charging privileges-they must use a credit card and pay as they go; however, they must present their membership card when paying so that the owner receives credit for the tenants’ food and soft beverage consumption. When the Owner allows a Membership Transfer, the owner relinquishes their rights to the amenities mentioned above. There is a 30 day / one (1) month minimum for rentals - shorter stays are not allowed.

Annual full-time tenant Lease Renewals to the same property require no additional fees, but do require submission of a new Rental Application and updated copy of the Renewal Lease at least 30 days before expiration date. If time lapses, another $275.00 application fee will be required.

Please review the House & Ground Rules available on our website or pick up a copy in the Clubhouse Administrative Office. Owners are asked to please keep a copy in their unit for their Tenants. It is important to note that our Bylaws dictate that Tenants are not allowed to have any type of pets. Vehicles require parking stickers or hang tags to avoid being ticketed and/or towed.

Space is a commodity and is available for photos of Club members attending Club events, as well as Milestone Events (i.e. 50th Wedding Anniversary, 90th birthday...if you aren’t sure ask us). Submissions are due by the 10th of the month prior to the publication. Please email your items to office@cypresswoodsgolf.com (include names and captions with your photos).
