Dear Club Owners, At the October Board meeting, the Master Board will vote on the budget for 2024 as presented by the Finance Committee. Many hours of work have been put into the budget by department heads and our General Manager in early summer, after which, the Finance Committee spent several months fine tuning the budget to its current form. We anticipate an increase of $350 to fund the reserves, $540 for operations and no increase to bundled TV and high-speed internet for a total increase of $890. Details on the budget were presented to the Board and the Membership at the Budget Workshop in September, and that presentation, which will answer any of your budget questions, may be found on the club website under club documents.

The Board continues to review Social memberships at the Club and anticipate increasing their dues significantly for the 2024 season. We also intend to give Cypress Woods homeowners 5 days advance booking for all events and have approved a new pickleball court reservation system to help alleviate any issues there. As your Board, we are tasked with trying to balance member experience with the significant income that the Social and Annual Members provide to the Club. It will never be perfect, but we will continue to make decisions that we believe make the Club a great place to live.

Thanks again to all who participated in the Communications Survey. The Communication Committee will be sharing the results of the survey with the Board this month, after which we will be sharing with the membership. We hope we can use the results to better communicate with the Membership in the manner that you prefer going forward.

We completed our final aerification on the golf course in September so we should only have minimal interruption to play through the season. We were delighted to host the PGA Southwest Florida High School Regional Invitational for a two-day tournament at the Club in late September, and the feedback was tremendously positive. The course was, and remains, in excellent condition and the food and beverage operations did a magnificent job as usual. Hosting tournaments such as these helps expose the club to people who may never have known we existed, and show others who may have visited in the past just how great our Club really is.

We will launch a new app this month through our existing operation system, Jonas. Members will be able to make dining reservations, pickleball court reservations including guest registration, sign up for fitness classes, and link to Chelsea for tee times, all through a single app. The app will also have much of the most used items from the website including access to the club roster. There will certainly be some growing pains as we initiate the app but it will vastly improve your reservation experience at the Club and hopefully provide another step towards better communication.

Our H2B team members from Jamaica will return in the middle of the month with many of the same smiling faces returning for their fourth season at Cypress Woods. We have several other in-country seasonal employees returning in November who will join our year-round team in creating a memorable member experience at the Club this season.

We are already beginning to see some of our seasonal members return to Naples over the past few weeks, and we are expecting many more returning this month. Upon your return you will see new plantings and up lighting at the front of the clubhouse, fresh seal coat on the blacktop, and new furniture outside the Golf Shop, giving the Club exterior a fresh new look for the upcoming season. We also painted the Fitness Center interior and added some new furniture giving the space a bright and refreshed look as we begin our fitness classes again this month.

ON THE GREENS FROM THE GOLF PRO Hello Cypress Woods Members, As many of you return, my staff and I would like to welcome you back home to Cypress Woods! We have had a busy summer and are looking forward to this upcoming season. I am really excited as we are expecting our new golf carts to arrive at the beginning of November! The golf carts will now feature GPS! The last weekend of September, we hosted the Southwest Florida Regional High School Invitation. Thank you to those who came out to help support and watch some great golf! I heard nothing but positive feedback about Cypress Woods and its members and they wanted me to give a big thank you for all the support in making it a special and successful tournament!

We also had a great turn out for our Labor Day Event. We had 100 players who came out and battled the heat! Our next club event will be our Veterans Day event on Saturday November 11th. Sign up will be on Chelsea starting October 14th.

Reciprocal season will be wrapping up October 31st so make sure to get in those last few courses you want to play!

I want to remind everyone about the pace of play at Cypress Woods. For each round our pace of play is 4 hours and 5 minutes and we ask that you please do your best to stay within that parameter. As always, keep up with the group ahead of you and make sure they are in view as this will help you keep pace. If you are the first group out for the day, please understand that if you play in less than 1 hour 45 mins you may catch the last tee time of the morning crossover or our golf course maintenance staff. GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE Cypress Woods Members, October is here and so are the cooler temperatures. With the lower temperatures, this time of year comes lower dew points and humidity. Greens are rolling great, and we are getting our course ready for the new season.

Here are a few things we are doing as the growing of the grass slows down. We will continue our wetting agent programs to help balance the moisture level in the soil. Wetting agents are a vital factor in our green’s programs.

When it is wet and humid, we apply a product to pull water and moisture down deeper. During dry, windy, low humidity times, we are applying a different wetting agent to help hold and keep the top surface at the optimum water percentage level.

Also, our fertility plan will be adjusted for this time of year. PGRs will be significantly reduced, but not cut out completely. This helps with warm wet periods to keep the grass storing all the nutrients it has, instead of using them up with a flush of quick growth.

Other things we will be focusing on are edging bunkers, edging cart paths, and cleaning up the tree lines. These are not the only detailed items we will be working on, but just a few examples of what we will be doing outside the growing season. Speaking of the grass not growing this time of year, if you are playing and driving a cart, please try not to take the same direction as everyone else.

Spread out and drive on the best-looking grass you can find or ride on the cart path as much as possible. This helps the other areas to heal and recover. And please bear with us in the upcoming months as we haven’t received the amount of rain we thought we were going to get this year, so our lake levels are low. We have a limited amount of water to use on the golf course, so restrictions may be applied later. To solve this problem, we will be putting out more wetting agents, granular and liquid to these brown areas so they can retain moisture, and that way we will use less water.

ON THE GREENS FROM THE CWLNHGA The CWLNHGA is looking forward to another great year of golf, fun and making new friends! Our mission is to provide a safe and fun environment for women golfers who enjoy playing 9 holes, while offering to assist and support each member to attain her golfing goals. We promote camaraderie and friendly, fun competition while learning the rules and etiquette of golf.

Our 2023-2024 season booklet is now published. Printed copies will be available in the pro shop and will be emailed to our league members, completed registration forms need to be returned to the pro shop by October 3. Current members will receive it via email. If you are not a member of the CWLNHGA league and would like to be, feel free to contact the pro shop where you can pick up a membership form. We kick off the season on October 3rd, our first day of play.

Our first tournament of the upcoming season will be our Ooh La La (Welcome Back) Tournament and will be held at Cypress Woods on November 7. The flyer will be posted in the women’s locker room and sent via email to our league members. Our chairs for this tournament are Vicki Mjoen, Jan Taliercio, Judy Running, Sandy Simard and Pam Beatie.

We are excited about our upcoming season and look forward to welcoming everyone back!

FOOD & BEVERAGE FROM FOOD & BEVERAGE October is an exciting month for the Club, as we say goodbye to Summer and hello to Fall. We have had great participation in our summer events, and I would like to thank the membership for their continued support all summer long. A big thank you to Mr. Curcio for his talented piano playing during our winning Wednesdays!

We have a great core group of full-time employees that stay year-round, but there will be some new faces around the Club in October as we begin recruiting and training, especially our hires from the H2B program.

Starting in October the fall clubhouse hours will begin. The Club will now be open for Tuesday a la carte dinner and Rib night will now be hosted on Wednesday evenings.

Events to look forward to in October include the following: • Oktoberfest • Thursday Member Social with Chef's Buffet • Bingo • Trivia • Welcome Back Party featuring Soul System • Wine Dinner • Prime and Pasta Night!

Reservations: Thanksgiving reservations are now open. Owner Reservations for all other member social events can be made 30 days prior to the event.

Other Important Info: The Club will be open for Tuesday a la carte dinner beginning in October.

Starting October, the Member Social will return to the first Thursday of the month. This will be reoccurring each month until April 2024.

Clubhouse Dress Code Proper attire is to be worn in accordance with the dress code for the particular areas of the Clubhouse.

GRILLE ROOM & PATIO LUNCH/DINNER GENTLEMEN: Collared shirts, 1” mock collared golf shirts, slacks, Bermuda style shorts, and plain denim are acceptable. Men are required to remove their hats and tuck their golf shirts. Golf shoes are permitted.

LADIES: Blouses or shirts, with or without sleeves. Bermuda length shorts, Capri pants, skirts, slacks, dresses, or plain denim.

NO denim shorts, cargo shorts/pants exterior pockets on the legs, tank tops, tee shirts, tube tops, frayed or tattered clothing, bathing attire, or athletic wear.

DINING ROOM LUNCH Same as Grille Room, but no denim or golf shoes permitted.

DINING ROOM DINNER HOURS AND SUNDAYS GENTLEMEN: Slacks and collared shirt appropriate for upscale casual dining are required for evening events. Dress shorts are permitted.

The Art of Pairing Wine and Food for Wine Diner

WELCOME!

With the 1st Wine Dinner of the 2023-24 season approaching on October 18th, I would like to define the pairing process we use for this event.

Many chefs may begin with the ingredients, and then allow recommendations from the wine representatives for pairing. What’s the fun in that? In my approach, I first determine the theme of the dinner such as California, Italian, Spanish, France or even featuring a Wine Maker.

Once we have reached out to the wine representative about the theme, we then meet prior to the event, taste the selections, and choose the 5 or 6 we think pair best for the evening. We then select the order of wines ranging from subtle flavors to bolder ones. My dinners generally escalate the “staircase” from whites to reds, but occasionally a Pinot Noir or such will sneak in before a white. We purchase the amount of wine based on our projected attendance at the event, this is to ensure we have all the wine needed to enjoy the evening.

The next step is to take a bottle of each varietal and do an in-depth tasting. There are two ways to approach pairing wine to food- the technical terms for pairing are Congruent (using the same flavors together that increase each other’s intensity) or Contrasting (which creates balance, in that flavor from either the food or the wine enhances the other). My approach is a hybrid, using both styles for my dishes. I like to taste the wine, and while doing this, identify food ingredients that will best create balance, while also strengthening the flavor profiles of the wine. In this process there are (6) important flavor profiles to taste for and consider- Acidic, Fatty, Bitter, Salty, Sweet and the Alcohol Content. While imagining what best flavor profiles to attribute for, I not only have to figure the best proteins and flavors I enjoy, but also consider all the additional palettes that will be attending. Like a bottle of great Cabernet, I’d like to believe I’ve gotten better over time!

OTHER NEWS STAFF FEATURE

Mark Moffatt- Assistant Golf Professional, PGA Mark grew up playing junior golf in West Hartford, CT and caddied at the Country Club of Farmington. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Central Connecticut State University.

Mark’s passion for golf led him to Pinehurst Resort and Country Club where he earned his Class “A” PGA Membership. He was an instructor at the Pinehurst Golf Academy and was part of the club operations team for the 1999 U.S. Open, the first at Pinehurst which again hosts the U.S. Open in 2024.

Mark came to Naples and Audubon Country Club as the First Assistant Golf Professional in October 1999. In October of 2000, Mark joined the management team to open The Club at Mediterra and as Head Golf Professional managed the golf operations and developed the golf instructional programs.

In August 2006 Mark earned the designation by the PGA of America of “PGA Certified Instructor. He was one of the first 100 PGA Professionals to be certified in Instruction.

Marks’ love of teaching the game led him to study under one of game’s great instructors and mentors Jim Hardy. Jim was the 2007 National PGA Teacher of the Year, is a Golf Magazine top 100 Teacher and currently ranked #7 in Golf Digest 50 greatest Teachers.

Mark went to Shadow Wood Country Club in 2010 where he served as Director of Instruction for the past 8 ½ years. In his capacity he planned, promoted, and directed all Golf Academy instructional programs including junior programs, demo days, and ball fitting days. In 2018 Mark was recognized as the Southwest Chapter of the PGA Teacher of the Year. While at Shadow Wood Mark developed a club travel program and along with his wife Tracy led golf and sightseeing trips to Southwest Ireland, Northern Ireland, Pinehurst, Pebble Beach, Spain, Portugal, and the Canadian Maritimes.

FINANCIAL FOCUS As we welcome back our northern members, we would also like to welcome back our seasonal staff including our H2B employees. These team members are an essential part of our F&B operations, supporting the club's mission to provide a high-quality country club experience. During season, our membership usage increases from 30% to full capacity. This increase in membership activity requires a substantial increase in service personnel.

We rely on returning seasonal staff like Fran Edgerton and Sue Finnegan, who have continued to join us every season for the past nine years. While we do have several dependable seasonal staff, it can often be difficult to hire employees locally due to the lack of personnel available to work only 6 months a year. To help alleviate staff shortages, Cypress Woods has participated in the H2B program for the last 6 years.

The H2B program provides the Club with the opportunity to staff sufficiently in the season when we need help the most. Qualifying for the H2B program is a 6-month process involving 2 separate federal agencies. Candidates for the program also endure tedious compliance requirements and each person is handpicked for their individual position. We appreciate all the hard work that goes into this process from both the H2B’s and the management team.

F I T N E S S & R E C R E AT I O N COURT NEWS – OCTOBER 2023 Cypress Woods Pickleball Players

Pickleball - Open Play is available on all 8 courts, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 to 11:00am. On days with Interclub League Play the courts are reserved for home matches starting with warmups at 11:00 and matches at 11:30. Courts are available for reservations or walk-on play any time courts are not scheduled for member play.

For those interested in playing pickleball, but who do not have equipment, please reach out to the Pro Shop for the combination code to the equipment box.

Bocce - Bocce sets are available for play at any time when there is no Club event. Equipment is available in the chest at the courts and a key to the chest is available at the Pro Shop.

Tennis - The west tennis court is available for open play on a first come, first serve basis. Please limit play to 2 hours when others are waiting.

Pool - Hours are 7 a.m. to dusk daily. Summer hours for poolside service are 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Water Aerobics - Club Pool, Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m., Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Mon., Wed., Friday, and Saturday - music based, Tuesday and Thursdays - CD lead. Pool Noodles are provided.

Fitness Center - Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Court Guest Registration - Member guests must be registered to play tennis or pickleball before playing. To register guests, the sponsor member must email accounting@cypresswoodsgolf.com stating the member’s number, the date of play, the number of guests (max is 3) and whether for tennis or pickleball. A guest fee of $5 per guest will be charged to the member’s account.

Members are on an honor system to register guests and guests must be accompanied by the member.

Court Reservations - Court time can be reserved when there is no Club event scheduled. See the courtside bulletin board for reservation instructions and scheduled events. An app for reservations will be coming in the fall of 2023.

When a member of Cypress Woods passes away, a notice is added to the TV in the foyer.

In order to protect the privacy of our members and their families, The Club only sends a club wide email with an obituary when the family of the deceased requests we do so.

Rental News

The Cypress Woods Golf & Country Club Master Association Clubhouse Administrative Office requires a completed Rental Application (all questions answered, all signatures required), a copy of the Lease Agreement between Owner and Tenant, and a $275.00 Application Fee submitted at least 30 days before lease start date, otherwise a $100.00 rush processing fee must be added to the $275.00 application fee for those turned in less than 30 days before start date. If opting for the Membership Transfer, please provide that form accompanied by a $300.00 Transfer Fee. Checks can be separate or combined and should be made payable to “Cypress Woods.” Please note that the Membership Transfer includes Golf, access to the Fitness Center, Clubhouse Pool & Spa, tennis and pickleball courts and a merchandise discount in the Pro Shop. Additionally, presenting your Member ID Card in The Grille Room &/or Dining Room helps the Owner toward the owner’s $600 annual Food Minimum. It is important to note that seasonal/part-time tenants DO NOT have member account charging privileges-they must use a credit card and pay as they go; however, they must present their membership card when paying so that the owner receives credit for the tenants’ food and soft beverage consumption. When the Owner allows a Membership Transfer, the owner relinquishes their rights to the amenities mentioned above. There is a 30 day / one (1) month minimum for rentals - shorter stays are not allowed.

Annual full-time tenant Lease Renewals to the same property require no additional fees, but do require submission of a new Rental Application and updated copy of the Renewal Lease at least 30 days before expiration date. If time lapses, another $275.00 application fee will be required.

Please review the House & Ground Rules available on our website or pick up a copy in the Clubhouse Administrative Office. Owners are asked to please keep a copy in their unit for their Tenants. It is important to note that our Bylaws dictate that Tenants are not allowed to have any type of pets. Vehicles require parking stickers or hang tags to avoid being ticketed and/or towed.

• Our Covenants require owners to notify the Administrative Office ten (10) days in advance if you are having visitors stay at your place in your absence.

• If you are an owner that rents your unit out, please share important email blasts with your tenants. Since these emails come from the Cypress Woods website, which is for owners only, renters do not receive them.

The only means of communicating with renters, is via the owner. Thank you for your cooperation!

Thank you to our members who have contributed articles and photos. Space is a commodity and is available for photos of Club members attending Club events, as well as Milestone Events (i.e. 50th Wedding Anniversary, 90th birthday...if you aren’t sure ask us). Submissions are due by the 10th of the month prior to the publication. Please email your items to office@cypresswoodsgolf.com (include names and captions with your photos).
